The 80-year-old Redcliffs identity gave a lifetime of service to the community including four terms as a councillor and Hagley- Ferrymead Community Board member. Mr Cox had Parkinson’s disease for the last three-and-a-half years. However, he died last week after a battle with cancer. His wife of 56 years Fiona said he cared so much about the community and was still working with the library a month before he passed away. “He was living life pretty well until just before Christmas. All the family came for Christmas and we had the best day ever,” she said. Mr Cox leaves behind children and grandchildren, Sonia and Peter Caird, Andrew and Sarah Cox, James, Simon and Michael Caird, and Annabel and Claudia Cox. He was the first chairman of the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board in 1989 and held the Ferrymead and Hagley-Ferrymead seat on the city council for four terms, before a final term on the board. Mr Cox retired from council in 2013 but throughout his life he was also a patron of the Redcliffs Library, as well as chairman of the Music Centre of Christchurch and member on the board of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. He was involved in the Sumner Lifeboat Institution, the Youth DEDICATION: Former city councillor David Cox died last week. Heritage Education Trust, a member of the Court Theatre Trust and a committee member for Bromley Kindergarten, Christchurch East School and Linwood College. Mr Cox was active in a number of sports clubs including Christchurch United, Ferrymead Bays Football Club, Sumner Cricket and Canterbury Sports Foundation. Ferrymead Bays wore black armbands and held a minute’s silence in his honour before their game on Saturday. The city council will also hold a minute’s silence at its meeting today. City councillor Yani Johanson worked with Mr Cox from 2001, when he was first elected to the board. “He was a really hard-working and dedicated servant to the community. He was involved with young sports people, volunteer groups, the libraries. In terms of his service to the community, he was incredible.” Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Darrell Latham said he was a great adviser for board matters. “He emailed and phoned me. We met on several occasions at functions and he offered great advice and support. David Cox has provided excellent service and support to Christchurch city and to his community. This will be his enduring legacy.’’ A celebration of Mr Cox’s life will be held at the Christchurch Transitional Cathedral tomorrow from 2pm. $1m safety upgrade for dangerous intersection THE CITY’S fourth most dangerous junction could become a T intersection in a bid to reduce the number of crashes. Plans for the $1 million safety upgrade at the Middleton, Ilam and Riccarton Rd intersection have been revealed by the city council. Restricting Riccarton Rd from Middleton Rd to left turns in and out only, as well as narrowing the road to allow more footpath space for pedestrians has been proposed. It was ranked the city’s fourth most dangerous, raking up 40 crashes with varying degree of injury since 2011. That bad boy is probably long gone. I’m beginning to dread future hide and seek games, will I disappear too? Over the last week Vittoria has started holding some things closer however, and it’s very cute. She gets her favourite soft toys, like her Dragon, wraps her wee arms around them and gives them a big, smiling, moving side-to-side cuddle. Dragon even gets a couple of kisses on his cheek sometimes. Very, very cute. She even gave someone else’s teddy a big cuddle at Baby Times. I can’t wait to see her give her friends big hugs too. This week started out productively. Over the weekend Laura and I cleaned the whole house (hence the mouse update) with a focus on Vittoria’s room. Her room has seen a lot of use for storage, including her cot. We’ve been co-sleeping with the wee darling for a while now. She got sick last year which ended a joyous run of full nights of sleep until we gave in and let her into the big bed. VITTORIA & Matt Long road ahead getting back to cot Thing is, getting her back into sleeping in her own bed is not going to be easy. In bed with one of us, she can roll over, touch us and get reassured straight away that she’s safe and with her parents. In the cot, not so much. It really highlights how much like a little prison those things are when you see your daughter standing there, holding the bars and crying like the world just ended. And if you’re used to having your parents next to you when you settle back to sleep, Dad just holding your hand is not going to cut it. So we’ve got a long road ahead to get her back to a place where she feels safe in her cot and happy to sleep there all night. A lot of that road will involve very little sleep too. To add to the difficulty, this week Vittoria and I have got some sort of cold. It may be unfair, but I’m pretty sure I got it off her since we spend so much time in close proximity. •Former Star Media journalist Matt Salmons has become a stay-athome dad.
