allegedly shot dead
inside his spaza shop in
Khayelitsha, Mlungisi,
last Friday.
Mulugeta Gebremariam
Ashebo, 33, from Ethiopia was
found lifeless in a pool of blood
at the entrance of his business
premises at about 11pm.
His friend Teshome Joseph
Fita believes it was an armed
robbery as some items from the
shop were missing. Fita said he
was not at the premises when
the incident occurred and had
received a call from someone in
Nomzamo who had informed
him about the tragedy.
“We saw him lying there with
Foreign spaza shop
owner gunned down
three gunshot wounds in his
stomach, but there were no
signs of forced entry. I don’t
know what could have
happened because he always
locked the gates. He
sometimes closed very late and
he was usually alone. There
used to be guys with him at the
shop, but they had gone to
Durban about a week ago.”
Fita said there was a knife
near Ashebo’s body and he
believed he might have tried to
“Shop items, including
there are no cameras or alarm.”
He indicated the deceased
came as a shock.
A neighbour, who did not
Lightning kills goats during heavy storm
Livestock owners urged to use open fields for grazing
ANDISA BONANI
Seven goats were found dead in
Mlungisi on Tuesday morning after
they were reportedly struck by
lightning during a heavy storm that hit the
drought-stricken Komani, leaving several
areas awash with water.
Four goat carcasses were found at Save
the Children’s Home centre by a worker who
alerted the police about the incident and
another three were found at Mzingisi
Skweyiya Community Hall in the same area.
Centre administrator Luthando Lingela
said he saw the dead goats in the centre’s
yard when he arrived in the morning to
open the offices and there were already
dogs eating the carcasses.
“There were four goat carcasses in the
yard when I arrived and a pack of dogs
helping themselves. I also learnt a further
three found at Skweyiya Hall. I realised the
goats were probably struck by lightning
because of the way their bodies were torn
open. It was not the way dogs would usually
attack. One goat’s ribcage was totally
ripped open and the others had their gut
contents coming out of the rear end.”
Lingela said he was advised by a ward
councillor to report the matter to the police
and the Komani Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) before
attempting to remove the carcasses.
“I reported the matter to the police and
was told to approach local livestock owners
to identify the carcasses so that they could
be removed. Not one of all the people we
know who own livestock in this area
claimed ownership and I believe this is
because no one wants to take responsibility
because we have asked them so many
CHDM tables its mid-term performance report
Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM)
executive mayor Kholiswa
Vimbayo recently tabled
the municipality's 2018-19
financial year mid-term
performance which st a n d s
at 64% in Cacadu.
The report revealed that
the district fell short of
attaining all its set targets
and corrective measures
were outlined in this
regard.
Out of 137 planned
targets (service delivery
and budget
implementation plan
SDBIP), the district
managed to achieve 87,
while 50 were not
attained. The SDBIP for
2018-19 was divided in
terms of the five key
performance areas (KPA)
applicable to local
government, namely KPA
1: Municipal
transformation and
institutional development.
Its main focus is the
provision of support
services internally. These
are chiefly matters of
human resource
provisioning and
development, employee
wellness, information
c o m m u n i c at i o n
technologies, fleet
management services and
legal services.
KPA 2: Basic service
delivery and infrastructure
development. The main
focus is on tangible
service delivery matters
such as water and
sanitation, road
maintenance, housing and
town planning services.
KPA 3: Local economic
development. This focuses
on seeking to ensure that
conducive conditions are
created for broader
economic growth and
ultimately boosting the
district economy. These
indicators would focus on,
among others, issues such
as tourism promotion and
development, forestry
programmes, heritage
development, the
Expanded Public Works
Programme (EPWP) and
agriculture.
KPA 4: Municipal
financial viability and
management, focuses on
the internal financial
management processes.
This would focus on
matters relating to budget
development, supply
chain management
issues, asset management
as well as income and
expenditure management.
KPA 5: Good
governance and public
participation, focuses on
matters such as public
participation, stakeholder
engagement, customer
care, performance
management, the
effectiveness of oversight
structures, internal audit
matters, risk management
and communications.
The performance rating
attained as per the
above-mentioned KPAs
was: municipal
transformation and
o r g a n i s at i o n a l
development 50%, basic
service delivery 68%, local
economic development
95%, financial
management and viability
43% and good governance
and public participation
67 % .
The overall performance
of the district for the six
months indicates a 9%
decline when compared
with the recorded
performance in the
previous financial year at
the same period which
was 77%.
The report outlined key
challenges that contributed
to the decline in
performance, which
Stakeholders in the
district are apprised on the
municipal performance on
a quarterly basis through
the IDP representative
ANC ward councillor Mncedisi Mbengo
said the incident was a good lesson for
livestock owners who have been regularly
urged by Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality
(EMLM) officials to use open fields as
grazing land for animals.
“The centre has had an issue of animals
forcefully entering the premises and
destroying things. This should a good
lesson for all livestock owners to take care
of their animals and ensure they feed in
spaces reserved for them. I will be in
contact with the local authority and make
an arrangement for the carcasses to be
removed since there has not been anyone
brave enough to claim them.”
SPCA acting manager Chissano Sana
said it was not their duty to remove dead
carcasses, but that of the local authority.
Arrests for
vehicle theft
Last Tuesday afternoon, Red Guard response officers
attended to a panic alarm at a shop, operations manager
Willie Reinecke told The Rep.
They apprehended a suspect on site who had broken the
glass door of the fridge. He was handed over to the police.
On Thursday night, the security officer on duty at the
municipal parks heard noises and, upon investigation, he
found four suspects raping a woman. He called for
assistance and response officers managed to apprehend
one of the four, who was handed over to the police.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, the company’s
24-hour control room received a call regarding a motor
vehicle that had been stolen at the Queenstown Bowling
Club.
A response officer on patrol in Blue Rise saw the stolen
vehicle being driven out of town in the direction of Lady
Frere. He followed the vehicle and called for assistance. The
response officers managed to stop the vehicle and
apprehend one of three suspects, who was handed over to
the police.
After further investigation, the police made more arrests
and other stolen vehicles were also recovered in Lady Frere.
This is reported to be a syndicate who had been stealing
vehicles over a period in Komani and taking them to Lady
Fr e r e .
At mid-morning, response officers attended to a panic
alarm at a clothing store. The response officer apprehended
a suspect for theft from the shop and handed him over to
the police.
On Sunday evening, response officers attended to an
alarm at a furniture store, only to discover that a taxi had
driven into the store. The response officers had to remain
on site to stop people from entering the store and prevent
the theft of furniture and equipment. They remained on site
for almost an hour until the store manager arrived and a
security officer was posted on site.
was again postponed on
The alleged incident
occurred in Whittlesea in
2016.
The postponement was
due to an interpreter failing
to arrive on the day of the
trial. After several attempts
were made to contact the
interpreter, he informed the
prosecutor, Nkosinathi
Faxa, that he was out of the
The case was then
moved to Tuesday with
arrangements to find an
alternative interpreter.
However, that did not
succeed.
Komani regional court
magistrate Nomsami
Bangladeshi interpreter not
being available, the case
would be postponed to
February 28.
“The second interpreter
said he will be available
Komani joins national Cosatu march
ANDISA BONANI
Hundreds of Cosatu affiliated
workers, including school teachers,
joined in the national march against
unemployment, corruption and the
privatisation of state-owned entities,
among others, to attract the attention
of the national government.
The march started from the Thobi
Kula Indoor Sports Complex where a
litany of speakers addressed the
masses about the event and its
purpose, before they marched to the
town hall where a memorandum of
demands was handed over.
Cosatu provincial educator
Mkhawuleli Maleki said the purpose
of the march was to put pressure on
ANDISA BONANI
Aheavy storm which fell in
Komani on Monday
afternoon left a number of
Ezibeleni zone 1 households
flooded due to the dysfunctional
stormwater drainage system
under the Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipalit y’s jurisdiction.
Houses in Agget and Gobhoza
Streets were flooded with water
streaming down from high-lying
areas, completely covering the
streets, yards and even going
inside some houses.
Residents, including children,
had to use buckets to remove
water from inside their homes
and vehicles could not access
Agget Street as it was covered
by water. The stormwater drains
were blocked, thus resulting in
the government and private sector to
try to curb the country’s economy
from dwindling further, caused by
population growth.
Maleki said many people,
especially the youth, were
discouraged from finding jobs
because they did not get responses
when they submitted a p p l i c at i o n s .
“There is also a high rate of
retrenchments in state-owned
companies and the government
intends to privatise them. We have
experience of this and it is a bad
decision because it leads to job
losses and government services
which citizens received at a low price
would increase, thus marginalising
the poor. When other countries look
at the state of our economy and the
the flooding.
Ezibeleni resident Siziwe
Tyalana is concerned about the
issue and said the floods caused
problems because there were
elderly people living in the area
who would be stuck in their
flooded houses when it rained
h e av i l y.
“We arrived in Ezibeleni in
1974 and have always had this
problem. Mayors and councillors
have come and gone, leaving us
with empty promises each time.
At some stage the local authority
promised to move us to another
area for a while and rebuild our
houses properly, including fixing
the stormwater drainage which is
the root of this problem.
“Families have to change their
furniture on a regular basis as it
is damaged by water.
“We have pensioners and
electricity situation at Eskom, they
are discouraged from investing here.”
He said if the government
implemented the decision to privatise
Eskom and other entities, it would
lead to many people losing their jobs.
“If there are a few employed
people in a country and the rest are
unemployed, a large portion of tax
would go to paying grants. This will
lead to tax increments.”
ANC provincial secretary Lulama
Ngcukaitobi said the party supported
the cause of the workforce because
unemployment was the starting point
of problems faced by society and the
country as a whole.
“The president made many
commitments during 2019’s job
summit and we need all partners to
some children who do not have
parents or they are unemployed,
so you can imagine their living
conditions when their only
furniture is damaged.
“Our councillor also lives here,
but is not directly affected, so
the residents believe he does not
care. No one in the municipality
is willing to step up and come to
our aid, all their want is our
v ot e s , ” Tyalana said.
Resident Nombeko
Mfengwana said she lived with
her 81-year-old asthmatic mother
whose health issues became
worse each time there was rain
due to water flooding their home.
“For us it is not even an issue
of the water coming through the
small opening below the door, it
comes through the foundations
of the house. This results in our
wardrobes, wall unit, fridge and
come on board and support the
cause to end unemployment. The
ANC aims to firstly get rid of all
persons who have been proved to be
corrupt and squandering government
money. We were the first to support
the Zondo Commission into state
beds being soaked and
eventually damaged. This is not
a once-off thing, it has been
going on for decades. I cannot
even remember how many times
we replaced furniture because of
this.”
Mfengwana said she would be
forced to skip work the following
day so that she could take out all
the furniture and get everything
dried, an activity which would
see her lose R100 from her
p ay m e n t .
Affected resident Akhona
Mtola said the municipality was
to blame because it was due to
the damaged roads and drainage
system that water came
streaming into people’s homes.
The manager in the office of
the mayor, Butsha Lali, did not
respond to a query sent to him
by the time of going to print.
LEADING FROM THE FRONT:
The Cosatu march in
Komani was also
supported by ANC bodies,
including, from left, Chris
Hani regional executive
committee chair Wo n g a m a
Komani labour office director
it to the provincial office where it would
be dealt with by department heads.

STUT TERHEIM – Big news in the world of
Rotary this week, is that the District
Governor (DG) of district 9370, Gianna
Doubel from Port Elizabeth visited the
Rotary Club on Thursday evening. For
those not familiar with Rotary, this is a
very auspicious occasion, especially in a
district that reaches from Lesotho, Natal
and all the way down through the Border
region. It is massive, so when DG Gianna
came to Stutt, it caused great excitement.
She brought a message of inspiration: to
share in the global, non-partisan message
of world-wide friendship and kindness that
is Rotary. She urged Rotarians to not only
be inspired, but to be the inspiration of
those around them.
With her was the Rotary Anns’ Dist rict
Governor, Karin Shaw, who presented an
update on the Anns organisation. Stutt’s
Rotary president Ian Henderson presented
a fine report of the activities of the club
over the past year with an emphasis on
ser vice.
Dylan Potter and Elizabeth Pickering
also made an appearance on behalf of the
Interact Club, sharing their goals and
objectives for the Interactors over the
coming year.
THE Interact Club began its year officially
last Thursday in the school library. In a
meeting attended by the principal and
representatives of the various charities
that the Interactors have identified, they
laid out their mission and action plan for
the next two years. The charities with
whom Interact will work are Stutterheim
High School (since charity begins at
home), Amahlathi SPCA, Amatola Haven,
Open Arms Children’s Home and Kusile
Wo m e n ’s Empowerment.
The idea is to broaden the existing
relationships between the Interactors and
their chosen causes and to develop links
with other charities, new to Interact. Each
of the organisations present at the
meeting was most gratified to be present
and Nonfunekela Selaze of Kusile made an
inspiring speech at the close of the
meeting expressing her heartfelt wishes
for the continuation of the successful
r e l at i o n s h i p .
The committee was also announced at
this meeting with a dynamic and
enthusiastic group of students taking on
leadership roles in Interact.
ON Friday afternoon, the Stutt High
prefects travelled to Lilyfontein School
near East London for the annual
leadership social run by that school’s
adventure department. As always the day
was an unmitigated success and every
one of the prefects had an absolute blast
completing activities that tested their
leadership skills, their teamwork abilities,
physical and mental stamina and pure,
old-fashioned determination.
Schools such as Gonubie High, Hudson
Park, Dale College and George Randall
attended the social and, since the teams
were all muddled up, friends were made
from many different schools and
backgrounds. This interaction between
schools was a successful initiative
promoting social cohesion and cementing
camaraderie between pupils who share
the common goals of leadership and
teamwork.
SHARON Parker is ‘at it’ again. Each
afternoon the SADS (Stutterheim Amateur
Dramatic Society) theatre is filled with the
bustling feet of excited youths and the
heavier steps of enlivened adults.
Practices for her next production, made up
of excerpts from musicals, are underway
and preschoolers to pensioners are being
roped in for the production.
Sharon is no doubt under a lot of
pressure but, knowing her, Stutt has full
confidence that whatever she takes on will
invariably turn to gold. The production is
slated to open in May.
THE country club played an exhilarating
game of cricket against YADAC club on
Saturday and won by 210 runs. Although
Michael Dugmore scored a rather handy
73, the man of the match was Ryan
Pickering who scored 70 and took five
wickets - a well deserved accolade.
On the golf front, the weekend was
taken up by the captain’s golf day which
drew a large crowd of enthusiastic golfers.
Joshua Manthe and Michael Dugmore
took first place garnering 47 points, with
Reece Daniel and Sean Richter coming in
second at 45 and in third place were Kyle
Blom and Craig Sparks with 44 points.
ROUND Table 103 continues to play a
pivotal role in the community and this
week marks the end of Peter
Fe at h e r st o n e ’s tenure in the chairman’s
seat. A number of charities have been
earmarked to be the beneficiaries of
finances from this organisation. Their first
donation was to Amatola Haven the
retirement village, which received a
cheque for R25,000.
After the organisation’s year-end
function, a comprehensive overview of
charities will be presented and reported.
must be found and brought to book. Nothing
like this has ever happened in our area and it’s
quite concerning.”
Another neighbour, Fezeka Mangele, said she
was awoken by one of the neighbours around
11pm.
“We went to one of our neighbour’s yards as
police were already on the scene. We heard
screaming and were later told he was shot dead.”
Mangele said there were safety concerns
regarding the late operation of the spaza shop
and a tavern situated nearby.
“We do not want to fight with anyone, but
the shop must close down permanently. We
need to speak to the owner of the house
because the safety of residents comes first.”
Nomzamo Neighbourhood Watch leader
Andile Zondi condemned shops operating late
at night.
“This issue was raised before and it is a
problem. Foreign national shop owners must
refrain from operating at night because they
become easy targets and fall victim to robbery.
This is now a warning to other shop owners.”
Police spokesperson Captain Namhla
Mdleleni said police were investigating a case
of murder after a 33-year-old man was
allegedly found lying in front of his shop with
bullet wounds to his body. Mdleleni did not
want to give further details on the case due to
ongoing investigations. She, however, indicated
there were no signs of robbery.
“There is nothing indicating robbery. Other
things are part of the investigation, but we will
not dwell much on them. No arrests have been
made,” she concluded
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Bangakhula Older Persons’
Association recently held a
memorial candlelight service for
members who had died in 2018
and their families were invited to
take part.
Ministers from local churches,
including Lwandiso Mbelebele
from the Methodist Church of
Southern Africa, Sandile
Mhlontlo from St Andrew’s Parish
and Siphiwo Hlawula from St
Pe t e r ’s Parish.
Mbelebele said loneliness was
the biggest problem faced by
elderly people.
“Old people do not demand
many things. They do not want
our money, they just want our
presence.
They need us to reach out to
them and show them we care.”
He added the role of the
church was to be consistent in
reaching out to them.
Dollz Ngqula, who had
organised the event with the
deputy chair of the association,
Nonhlanhla Mpakama, said
Enoch Mgijima Local
Municipality had allowed the
members to run their daily
activities at Sunshine Village in
Laurie Dashwood Park.
Ngqula said the elderly
gathered on Mondays to Fridays
for their activities.
“We have retired health
professionals and educators. We
spend our time sharing ideas and
exchanging skills. We also do
knitting and exercises, cooking
and baking. A person who is not
active at an old age, loses
strength and health. This is how
we escape ageing quickly.”
Inventor struggles to bring ideas to life
BRIGHT MINDS: The commode
local inventor Khanyisa Nyeka
Ear infections ‘most common in schools’
ABONGILE
According to
Phelophepha clinical
nursing practitioner
Phiwokuhle Mhlongo,
local schools, ear
ANDISA BONANI
An innovative woman from
Ezibeleni has invented a
commode for people who
struggle to get themselves to
the toilet, an invention she
said was inspired by
overweight people in her
fa m i l y.
Khanyisa Nyeka said the
commode was needed in
hospitals and homes where
sick and elderly people
struggled to get to the
b at h r o o m .
“Hospitals normally use
bedpans or nappies which are
expensive, especially for
people who take care of sickly
loved ones at home. The
commode is portable, easy to
clean compared to a nappy
and will save money.”
Nyeka said she was assisted
by the Chris Hani District
Municipality in 2017 which
paid for the fees for an
infections were the most
prevalent health ailments
experienced by primary
school pupils in the
province. Mhlongo said
this during a visit to
Unathi Mkefa Primary
School in Ezibeleni on
Fr i d ay.
“The Phelophepha
health care, eye, and
dental clinic services
have been visiting
primary schools because
many health problems
ought to be prevented
from early childhood.”
She said eight schools
inventor’s course, for which
she was grateful.
“The district municipality
also helped me to get a factory
at Queendustria which has a
10-year lease. This year is the
fifth and I have not used that
space as other promises have
not been fulfilled. The
municipality made so many
promises, including paying a
prototype company so my
other inventions could be
brought to life.
“This has not happened and
there is no indication when it
will happen. The factory space
has been vandalised over the
years and has deteriorated.”
Nyeka said President Cyril
Ramaphosa’s Thuma Mina
campaign encouraged black
women to start businesses so
they would get support, but
she is yet to receive the
support she needs from local
representatives of the
campaign.
were visited during the
period that the train had
spent in town.
“Our concern is that
most ear infections lead
the children to
experience loss of
hearing at a later stage if
they are not dealt with
sooner. This usually
starts from a lack of
cleaning and hygiene at
home. Our role is to treat
the pupils while teaching
them how to take proper
care of their ears.”
Other common
ailments among pupils
were skin and breathing
conditions, Mhlongo
said.
Mhlongo said regular
check-ups were very
important as good health
among children began
from immunisation level
to prevent certain
conditions which could
lead to disability.
She said the health
“I feel as though the
municipalit y’s assistance is
dragging on. I have made
business deals with local
pharmaceutical companies
who indicated they would
stock some of my inventions,
including the commode, but I
need at least R3,000 to make a
c h a i r. ”
Nyeka has also invented a
multi-use bowl, pill container
with compartments for various
medicines and a polystone
which is a tombstone that can
be reused for two burials.
CHDM spokesperson
Thobeka Mqamelo dismissed
allegations of reneging on
promises and said they viewed
them as unfounded.
“We wish to indicate that
Nyeka approached the
municipality for further
support after we initially
assisted her to undertake the
training that she requested.
Her request for the prototype
programme only targeted
needy schools and that
they had also been
visiting old age homes
and disability care
cent res.
“Our tour has been a
great success. We were
fortunate to get
assistance from some
schools who had
identified pupils who
experienced health
problems, which made
our work easier.”
Mhlongo said their
next targeted area was
Mthatha, followed by
Idutywa and East
London.
was presented to the grant
application approval
committee for consideration
with all other applications the
municipality had received.
“The process is still under
way and the outcomes of the
deliberations of the
responsible committee will be
communicated to all
applicants. This is done in
writing to all, whether
successful or not. The process
was also explained to Nyeka
as such, and the district
therefore cannot succumb to
undue pressure and baseless
allegations to give preferential
treatment to any individuals in
this regard.”
The local inventor is looking
for any companies or
individuals who are willing to
invest in the inventions which
she has already designed. To
contact her, call 084-617-6454.
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Ko m a n i
citizenr y
takes a stand
On Wednesday evening,
the news editor of this
publication sat in the
midst of some of the most
influential members of the
Komani community.
Businesspeople,
professionals, civic
o r g a n i s at i o n s ’ leaders and
members, the farming
community, as well as
members of the media.
The aim of the gathering
was to take leadership by
building unity with a purpose
to help revitalise the
municipality and the
communities it serves.
The consensus among the
attendees was that the Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality is
in a state of collapse.
Matters of concern included
the billing system used by the
municipality, lack of
investment and the
indust rialisation of the
Queendustria, to name a few.
After sharing ideas on how
to engage and help the
municipality, more than 10
people were nominated to
form a working committee of
about eight members.
While this newspaper
supports any efforts to
improve the current state of
affairs in Komani, it would be
expected of the media to
exercise caution so as not to
be seen to be taking any
one’s side, anticipating that
the municipality may raise
questions about a campaign
that it may see as one that
seeks to interfere in its
a f fa i r s .
Efforts to beautify and
make Komani a better place
mean well and this
newspaper supports such.
It is indeed true that it
would be foolhardy to expect
those in leadership to carry
on leading us even if we feel
we are being led astray.
With the national elections
coming up in just a couple of
months’ time, any attempts
by the community to take
leadership and make its voice
heard before it’s too late is a
move in the right direction.
The current state of affairs
in this country demands that
we as citizens call those in
power to order.
Komani is a beautiful town
with passionate people and it
would be a shame if its
citizens did nothing even
when things do not seem
right.
As The Rep, we look
forward to the work of the
new committee and
encourage the team to
engage the municipality in
helping to set it on the right
p at h .
Lights out
We have been hit by sudden stage 4
load-shedding for reasons no one
seems to be quite sure of.
President Ramaphosa, astonishingly,
said, “That comes as quite a shock. It
is reported that there are six units
down – that is most worrying, most
d i st u r b i n g , ” during a live Twitter
broadcast. Imagine, this is coming
from a person who should know many
things that are happening in the
country, he is the
president after all,
isn’t he? This is a
person who was
assigned by the
then president
Jacob Zuma to
head a committee
that was specifically tasked to look at
State Owned Enterprises and find
solutions to the myriad of problems
that had engulfed them.
A year later, after becoming
president, he is shocked at the
parlous state of the very SOE he was
tasked to rescue. One can only
surmise that when he was deployed
to fix these SOEs, it was either a
publicity exercise by Zuma to appear
that he was doing something, or he
was sleeping on the job, or he had no
clue about what he was doing.
Incredibly, the minister in charge of
public enterprises, Pravhin Gordhan,
has blamed what he calls bad design
and construction of both the Medupi
and Kusile power stations. Cosatu
president Zingiswa Losi suspects that
sabotage by Eskom senior
management could be the reason
behind the latest power outages.
The acting ANC spokesperson Zizi
Kodwa also weighed in with, “The
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
coincidence is suspicious. This comes
a few days after the president made
very bold statements during the State
of the Nation Address about growing
the economy and boosting
i n v e st m e n t . ”
One thing politicians love is a
conspiracy. Why would Eskom
executives employed to keep the
lights on deliberately sabotage their
own employment by doing something
opposite to what
they are
employed to do?
Who would gain
politically out of
this embarrassing
and economically
crippling
load-shedding? It is clear none of the
politicians actually know what is
happening at Eskom, but do not want
to appear useless by coming out and
saying so.
Eskom, like many other SOEs, is
not geared towards efficiency and
profitability. Many of them like Denel,
Transnet, the SABC and SAA have
been black holes for taxpayers’
money and there seems to be no end
in sight.
At some point we will have to draw
a line in the sand and say no more.
We can’t keep throwing billions into a
pit with negligible returns and little
prospect of a lasting solution. We
might just have to look into the
possibility of throwing in the towel
and sell some and relieve the
taxpayer from having to sink in
further billions. Will the ANC have the
stomach for such a bold move?
Certainly not in an election year, but
will they ever?
JOHN STAFFORD
YOUR VOICE
President Cyril Ramaphosa
expressed shock and anger at
the news that Eskom
implemented stage 4
load-shedding on Monday
and that the situation could
get even worse. The Rep
News Editor Luvuyo Mjekula
asked residents if they were
as shocked.
John Stafford from Bergsig
It is disappointing. The way
the economy is at the
moment, it just does not
make any sense.
But at the end of the day
... vox pops on the street
What do you think about ...
ASHLEY SMITH LAUREN LATOLA LWAZI TSHINGILA NTOMBI MALUMLA
we have to live with it. The
president needs to get his act
together and work on his
priorities. We need to worry
about what’s happening in
our country before we worry
about what’s happening
overseas.
Ashley Smith from New
Re s t
It’s quite disappointing. We
are as shocked as the
president is. We have been
paying taxes and living by the
book but we are getting the
wrong end of the stick. It’s
voting time now, we don’t
with Camilla Wigmore
Question: Tell us about your
occup ation?
A: I am a teacher at Southbourne
Primary School in Komani. I teach
grades 4 and 5 English home
language. I can definitely say each
day is an adventure.
Q: What inspires you?
A: This week I have been very
inspired by one of our grade 4
pupils. She is a person with
albinism, and as a result she has a
serious visual disability. This
causes a lot of every day problems,
but whenever you see her she is
always smiling and so happy to be
at school and learning. She is one
of the most kind-hearted, positive
people I have ever met.
Q: Your favourite destination?
A: The farm where I grew up.
Nothing beats that fresh air and
tranquil beauty.
Q: Do you have a hobby and if so
what is it?
A: I enjoy taking photographs
and videos and editing and
creating things with them. I also do
a bit of design work on the side.
Q: What makes you angry and
what makes you happy?
A: My family makes me happy. I
have grown up in a big family that
know who to vote for because
it seems there is a lot of talk,
but nobody is doing anything.
Lauren Latola from Aloevale
I am just disappointed
about (load-shedding), it’s
not a nice thing. I did not
expect it. It was water, now
we have load-shedding. In
Aloevale we don’t have water
every day.
Lwazi Tshingila from
E zibeleni
To be honest, to me it’s no
surprise that we have load
shedding. Now that load
shedding is back they will
has always been there to support
me and show mad love. Injustice
makes me angry.
Q: If you were to be president,
what would you do?
A: I would really want to get the
South African education system
working, as well as SARS.
Q: What is it that people do not
know about you?
A: Before I started teaching I
worked as an interior designer.
Q: What do you believe can be
done to reduce unemployment in
South Africa?
A: Again, I think it starts with
education. If all the children can
get a proper education and
qualifications I believe we will see
an influx of new entrepreneurs and
businesses and this will create
many job opportunities.
Q: Are you proudly South African
and why?
A: Yes. I was born in South Africa
and it will always be home to me
so I want the best for our country.
Q: What advice would you give to
your younger self?
A: Don’t take every opinion and
piece of advice too seriously. Listen
to the people who really care about
and know you best.
give us water because we
have had none. When there is
power there is no water,
when there is water there is
no power. What angers us is
that power switches off
without warning – no
notification from Eskom as it
was before.
Ntombi Malumla from Top
To w n
It shocked me. We had to
Councillor is failing Ilinge people
Wandile Manyinyi writes: An entrepreneur who
wanted to apply and reopen a petrol station in Ilinge,
is fed up and withdrawing his plans, due to
struggling with the area’s ward councillor.
Businessman Wandile Manyinyi said his attempt
to have the community meeting by the councillor,
Mzwandile Thobe, failed. The proposal to reopen the
petrol station in Ilinge was made in October 2018.
On February 5 2019, the councillor visited me and
told me he is not going to organise the community
meeting; I must organise it myself – or else deal
with his junior structures, the ward committee. I felt
this is a huge project for the councillor not to
participate in to help development his area. He said,
I can do anything if I want to, he is not interested.
The requirement was as follows: The councillor
was to organise a community meeting; the minutes
of the meeting was to be held by the councillor; the
attendance register of the community meeting held
The brown, warming spice of nutmeg
brings a lovely exotic flavour to your
cuisine. In culinary use, it is welcomed in
savoury and sweet dishes.
When you cook with nutmeg, it is worth
knowing that this special spice enhances
digestion. So forget the bland, mundane
foods and add some spice to get things
exciting for your taste buds. That is not all,
since nutmeg has been said to act as an
aphrodisiac for your body.
When your body is full of vitality, you
can be sure to have a lot more energy.
This spice is made from the seed of the
nutmeg tree. Interestingly, the nutmeg tree
gives us two different spices. Mace is a
spice used medicinally and in foods. It is
by the councillor and the feasibility study for the
business proposal in the area.
Currently, I have withdrawn my proposal for
development in Ilinge township.
I will resume my proposal to reopen the petrol
station and the installation of Telkom landlines for
fax purposes after the general election in May 2019,
with the hope that those proposals will not fall on
deaf ears.
I am so disappointed by the refusal for the
development by the leading structure.
In my experience of working for 33 years in
different structures in all provinces in the country, I
achieved success for the companies I worked for.
During my seven years back at home, I have
changed the lives of the community for the better.
Even today, all the households in the community are
benefiting from what I do in the area.
I am the candidate available for the position of
Nothing nutty about nutmeg
the bright red wrapping around the
nutmeg seed. Nutmeg is the seed
wrapped beneath this colourful mace.
Nutmeg has a long list of awesome
benefits it will bring to you.
If you suffer from acne, why not try
nutmeg paste? The anti-bacterial and
antioxidant effects are beauty queens for
your skin.
An old remedy for insomnia is warmed
up milk with nutmeg. With nutmeg’s
natural properties, it also helps protect
you against infections and there are other
ways nutmeg is great for helping during
colds and flu.
Do not forget this spice is packed with
antioxidants to keep your immune system
well balanced.
Dental cavities are caused by oral
bacteria, so consuming nutmeg will help
keep your teeth and gums strong.
With diuretic effects linked to nutmeg, it
can hold claim to supporting kidney
function and toxin removal from your
being a ward councillor, should the ruling party be
granted the powers after the general election in May.
If I can be voted in as the ward councillor by the
community, I will resume the reopening of the petrol
station, the installation of Telkom landlines for fax
purposes, the upgrading of roads, see to the water
supply, the stadium and more developments for the
community, including attending to jobs issues.
In the past seven years back here, I have done the
huge developments alone.
More can be done if I am given a chance to take
Ilinge into the spotlight for the community, and that
can only be done by the voting in of the ruling party
in May.
Blocking development is as bad as the state
capture, although it differs in degrees.
I am the candidate to take the reins and lead the
community into the right direction where necessary
after the election.
Even if you experience arthritis and
ROUND&ABOUT
LINDA MADLIKI
Wesley welcomes their
new manse incumbent
Pupils’ ecobricks drive to build bus shelter
ZINTLE BOBELO
Stepping Stone Junior School is
contributing towards a clean environment
by collecting non-biodegradable waste to
make ecobricks that will help build the
school a bus shelter.
Teacher Antoinette van Greunen said
the school started working on this project
in January when they collected empty 2l
bot tles and used a wooden stick to
compress waste in the bottle. The
ecobricks can then be used to build a
structure, including furniture.
“The initial idea was to make the
children aware of our environment and to
tackle the plastic problem. The bottles
are waterproof, they don’t disintegrate
and last for a very long time without
maintenance. Some people fill the bottles
with different colours to give them more
effect, but we use whatever we have.”
She said the school was planning to
collect 270 ecobricks to build benches for
the school bus shelter. “We want to make
a 23-seater bus shelter with walls and we
have 25 at the moment. According to
research, three full black bags of plastic
material can fill one bottle and since I
started collecting these, I have reduced
the amount of waste at home too.”
She said they had encouraged pupils
to collect waste in their communities and
indicated that they worked on the project
every Friday with the help of grade 7
pupils.
“We are trying to teach the pupils how
to take care of the environment instead
of leaving discarded waste. We even
have non-recyclable and recyclable bins
outside the school and are hoping to
promote this at home too.”
She said the school had established an
inter-class competition to make the
project exciting for the pupils as the class
collecting the most non-biodegradable
waste will be treated to a party.
“This is to motivate the pupils to
collect and make as many ecobricks as
they possibly can.”
Grade 7 pupil Ovayo Mkefa said he was
excited to be part of a project that brings
about change in society. “This
contributes towards a clean environment
and I am not only doing it here at school,
I am also doing it at home. We want to
build furniture so that other children can
benefit from this,” said Mkefa.
CHUX FOURIE
The congregation of the
Wesley Methodist Church
has a new shepherd and
she comes in the diminutive
shape of Linda Madliki.
Linda grew up in East
London and attended school in
Mdantsane after which she
enrolled to study for a BComm
at the East London campus of
Fort Hare University. She did
not complete the course and
instead went to train as a
nurse at Cecilia Makiwane
Hospital. However, she suffered
so much ill-health that she had
to give that up after two years.
While at Fort Hare she
became pregnant with her first
child, a daughter who is now
35, and during her nursing
stint she had a son.
From 1989 she studied at the
Dr WBRubusana College of
Education in Mdantsane to
become a high school teacher
of maths, mostly for grade 8 to
12. Various teaching posts
followed and it was during this
time that she became a local
p r e a c h e r.
In 2001, she was first called
to the ministry, “But I was
afraid and I refused outright,”
she says.
Linda explains, “I saw my
late mother in a dream. We
were travelling together in a
boat and she was just smiling,
not speaking. When we came
ashore she motioned for me to
get out then pointed towards a
hall. I went to the hall and
found it was full of ministers. I
was terrified by the sight of all
those people in long black
robes and white collars and I
could not bring myself to join
them.
“I returned to the boat, but
when I got there both my
mother and the boat had
disappeared. I also found that
the moment I turned my back
on the hall my legs could no
longer carry me and I had to
crawl. Yet I still said to God I
can’t do this.”
This dream recurred from
time to time and in 2004 she
went to speak to Bishop
Mthobeli Matyumza about it
and he confirmed her calling.
He was supervisor of studies at
the Theological Education by
Extension College, which is like
a correspondence college in
Johannesburg and immediately
asked her to enrol.
So she started taking
courses while she was still
teaching and became a
candidate for the ministry in
2007. Although she failed that
year, the bishop again
supported her and talked her
into coming back and she
passed the following year.
In 2009, she was stationed
at Delareyville for a year until
she went to attend the
seminary in Pietermaritzburg
for a BTh in Ministry.
There followed a time in
Swaziland, during which her
house in Amalinda burnt down
and she lost everything she
owned.
She has since served in
Tsomo and Tsojana and
eventually arrived at Wesley in
December 2018 where she
conducted her first three
services on Christmas Day – at
Wesley, St John’s and Victoria
Pa r k .
Asked what she liked to do
when she had free time, Linda
replied, “Eish, I’m a readaholic,
a real bookworm, especially
theological books.”
She also loves to spend time
with her family and when she
does cook, it is very often just
vegetables.
“I can go a month without
m e at , ” she says.
In the church her special
areas of interest are children,
the youth and the elderly and
the teaching that goes with
them.
“I am a very prayerful
person, my life is centred
around prayer, perhaps
because I come from a very
religious family,” she says,
adding that she likes mixing
with people, and gets along
with most.
She says the people of
Komani have been very
welcoming and friendly and
she has an earnest hope for
there to be unity in the circuit.
“We had an integrated service
at my induction when all
assembled at Wesley and we
all enjoyed each other’s
company and the liturgy was
integrated, both in English and
isiXhosa.
“If unity can be attained, I will
have achieved my ambition.”
Farewell to school’s deputy principal
ZINTLE BOBELO
John Noah High School deputy
principal Yvette Kleinsmith walked the
school corridors for the last time after
her recent retirement.
Kleinsmith, who was at the school
for 25 years, said her passion for
educating the black child is what kept
her at school. Her career started when
she finished a BA degree at the
University of Western Cape in 1978
and went to teach at Arcadia High in
Bonteheuwel, Cape Town
She moved to Komani and obtained
a substitute post at Maria Louw.
“I started working at John Noah in
i n fo r m at i o n . ”
Helesi said the programme was in
partnership with various stakeholders, such
as Chris Hani District and Enoch Mgijima
Local Municipality (EMLM), Chris Hani
Development Agency, Avenir Media House
and the Eastern Cape Information
Technology Initiative.
“These stakeholders were there to present
career opportunities and provide information
on programmes offered by these
depar tments.
“We want them to take action and
effectively plan their future and not wait
until they get to tertiary institutions.”
Grade 12 pupil Nasiphi Matshikiza said
the president’s address was encouraging.
“It was educational and it shows that
there is going to be change. We are grateful
1993 when the school only had three
standards. I went back to Cape Town
in 1994 to teach at Gugulethu
Comprehensive but that didn’t work
out so I came back on depression
leave on the advice of a psychiatrist.
“I started teaching again in 1995. I
taught Afrikaans second language to
the first group of matriculants at John
Noah High and out of 75 pupils, 74
passed with A-aggregates.”
Kleinsmith said when Afrikaans was
removed from the curriculum, she
started teaching technology. During
those years, the school had 37 staff
members with an enrolment of 1,500
pupils. She had also served two terms
for these programmes because they are
informative and since we are not exposed to
such information these visits are crucial.”
Another pupil, Sinayo Ndlela, said he was
happy to hear the mention of access to
tablet devices for pupils.
“I was also happy to hear that taverns and
liquor outlets situated near schools were
going to be closed.”
EMLM council speaker Bongiwe van
Heerden highlighted some of the issues that
Ramaphosa had mentioned in his speech,
including corruption and drug abuse.
“I appeal to young people to refrain from
drugs. The president mentioned there are
plans in place to improve the education
system and the challenge of youth
unemployment,” said Van Heerden.
LAST RESPECTS: Staff and pupils at Queen’s College Boys Primary School
lives when a walkway collapsed at their school in Vanderbijlpark two
weeks ago. “As a school, we also prayed for the recovery of the students
who were injured. We were reminded how we need to care for others and
live each day to the fullest. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire
Driehoek community,” read a statement from the local school
Motivation for matrics
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
South African international motivational
speaker and life coach Xatyiswa
Maqhashalala encouraged matric pupils
to identify their priorities and values
ahead of their final examination.
Maqhashalala, who is based in
Johannesburg, was hired to speak to
local pupils by Nonesi Mall which
decided to play its role in making
education a societal matter.
“My message focused on priorities
because young people often do not
know how to identify them, considering
the fact that they do not have the luxury
of time before they complete the matric
as regional treasurer for Sadtu and
was involved in other social
programmes, including sport.
After years in the field, the mother
of three said it was time to retire and
travel plans were in the pipeline.
“It was not an easy road. I thank my
family and true friends for being with
me throughout the journey. I will
relocate to Port Elizabeth and will be
visiting a friend in Australia soon.
“My three boys – Dieter, Brian and
Jermaine – are planning to take me to
Switzerland for my 60th birthday and I
will be going to Thailand to visit family.”
In a video taken during her last
assembly, principal Samkelo Maka
finals,” Maqhashalala said.
The speaker believed young people
were distracted by peer pressure and
the latest trends.
“High school pupils tend to not want
to be left behind, especially in any
activities that include friends, fashion or
any other mainstream activity within
their environment. This leads them to
miss out on their studies.”
She said leading the pupils to know
their values would make it easier for
them to remove the destructive activity
which preyed on their studies.
“The responses I received from pupils
and school staff has been great, which
is quite exciting. However, you can only
measure the impact after the matric
expressed gratitude for her diligence
and wished her well.
“You have displayed expertise at the
school and have exposed us to a lot of
things. As a principal, it was a
privilege and honour to have worked
with you. You have been through a lot
and we thank you for the support and
encouragement. For the good and the
bad times that we have shared.
This is a career well led. You have
moved from pillar to post and there
were hard times, but you resurfaced
and still wore that smile. You have
served with honour and dignity and as
we strive for transformation you will
still be with us. You deserve the rest.”
final results.”
This was her second visit to schools.
“Last year I had my first motivational
tour of Eastern Cape schools in which I
also visited a few schools in Komani.
However, I usually focus on corporate
events and leadership training.”
Last year, Maqhashalala had an
opportunity to speak across the United
States of America in places like New
York, Atlanta, Kansas City, Washington
DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey and
Missouri.
“This year I have a line-up of African
countries like Tanzania, Liberia and
Time to leave the
nest? Ready for
your first rental or
property purchase?
It is indeed a very
exciting time in the life
of young people when
they can finally move
into their own flat or
home, whether renting
or taking the big step of
purchasing.
EZIBELENI R580 000
While exciting, it
does come with
considerable financial
implications and
obligations, Seeff
Property Group chair
Samuel Seeff said.
He gives some
advice:
The first thing to
know about renting
your first property, is
BUSINESS
Queenstown
A well known franchise Retail Food
Store in Queenstown CBD is for sale.
For details contact
083 554 3754
that you will need to be
financially able to
afford the rental as it
usually comes with a
fixed-term rental
contract with financial
consequences in the
event of non-payment.
You will need a clear
credit record and three
months’ bank
statements which show
sufficient money paid
in to cover the monthly
rental.
Generally speaking,
your monthly earnings
need to be around
three times the monthly
rental. A secure job is
usually a prerequisite if
you are taking the
rental in your own
name.
The next step is to
ensure that you have
NOBODY IN THE WORLD SELLS MORE REAL ESTATE THAN RE/MAX
RENTALS
LAURIE DASHWOOD PARK R945 000
enough funds to cover
the rental deposit
which could be up to
two times the monthly
rental plus any
additional
administrative costs
charged for the credit
clearance and drawing
up of the lease.
The next step would
be to sign a lease
agreement for the
period of the rental.
This document sets out
all the rights and
obligations of both
parties and new renters
need to pay careful
attention to any special
provisions such
as those that may
apply to your
conduct in a
sectional title
proper t y.
Before taking
occupation, you
should ensure
that a thorough
incoming inspection is
done together with the
rental agent or landlord
and ensure that this is
in writing and attached
to the lease agreement.
The lease is a legal
document and you are
bound to fulfil the
contract to its
conclusion.
This means paying
your monthly rent in
full, looking after the
property and
maintaining it in the
condition that you
received it, and
importantly, that you
conduct yourself in an
orderly manner
throughout your tenure.
As mentioned, if in a
sectional title property,
you need to ensure you
receive a copy of the
scheme conduct rules
and keep to these.
The first point of
departure when
purchasing will be
affordability and this
will be a factor of your
income. You need to
earn enough to cover
the monthly bond
amount by a factor of at
least three times.
Again, a stable monthly
Remember, there are
many hidden costs
when you first take
income will need to be
proven by way of three
months’ bank
statements. In some
instances, the banks
may have additional
requirements.
The next important
aspect is to have
enough cash available
if you need to pay a
deposit towards the
purchase price.
Additionally, there
will be transaction
costs payable if the
property price is above
R900,000, as well as
at torneys’ and bond
registration fees.
You may also want to
make upgrades and
enhancements that
need to be budgeted
for. Additionally, you
will need to pay
deposits for basic
service connections
and other matters
related to taking
o c c u p at i o n .
Whether you are
looking to rent or buy, it
is advisable that you do
your homework on the
area beforehand. Spend
some time there, visit
restaurants and chat to
locals to ensure it
is the right area
for you. Check if
the area meets
your lifestyle
needs in terms of
schools and so on.
Be sure to also
check traffic in the
area so that you
know how long your
daily commutes will
t a ke .
It is also important to
be honest about your
budget and needs so as
to ensure that you rent
or buy a property that
fits with this. Be
conservative and rather
rent or buy below your
means. Buying a
property is a big
decision with
significant financial
consequences, so be
sure to do it right.
Factors that contribute
to a bicker-free home
There are so many
little things that
can affect lifestyle
While trivial issues of whether the toilet seat
stays up or down will always exist, there
are several other more important ways a
home could be creating unnecessary tension in
your relationships.
According to Regional Director and CEO of
RE/MAX of Southern Africa, Adrian Goslett, buyers
who are looking to purchase a new home have the
chance to avoid this by being careful about their
purchasing decisions.
The first factor Goslett suggests homeowners to
review carefully is the location of the property in
question in relation to their daily commutes. “M o st
South Africans work a forty-five-hour week.
Spending just one additional hour in traffic on the
way to and from work pushes this total up to
fifty-five hours out of the 120 available hours in
any given work week. These long days increase
moodiness and fatigue which makes couples more
prone to arguments. Beyond this, with so little
time left in the evenings to see to unavoidable
household tasks, it also becomes near impossible
for couples to connect during the week. The
location of a property therefore plays a huge
contributing factor in the happiness of a couple,”
Goslett explains.
The next thing homeowners should consider is
the affordability of their home loan instalments
along with the corresponding monthly rates and
taxes. “Financial pressure is often one of the
leading causes for tension in relationships. If you
are unable to afford the monthly expenses the
property incurs, then it would be advisable to
consider more affordable options,” Goslet t
advises.
Finally, multiple studies indicate that most of us
are prone to mimicking those we spend a lot of
time around. Put more simply, “keeping up with
the Joneses” is a real subconscious battle with
which we all struggle.
“Allowing yourself to be influenced by those
closest to you can cause couples to fight over
things like unnecessary renovations or costly
additions to the home. For homeowners who are
particularly prone to these kinds of pressures, I
would advise that they carefully weigh up the
value of the upgrade against the financial burden
it will carry before going ahead with these kinds of
household projects,” Goslett concludes.
home, visit w w w. re m a x . c o . z a
SELFIE MOMENT: Queenstown Girls’ High School students share a
moment at the schools’ golf day
PERFECT START: Pupils take on each other at the Queenstown District
athletics meeting recently
Registration
opens for JSE
investment
challenge
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange
(JSE) has officially opened
registration for its 2019 Investment
Challenge, the institution announced
last week.
The challenge, which draws in
pupils and university students with
an interest in investment and stock
markets, is in its 46th year.
Over the decades, the initiative has
come to be highly regarded as an
instrument that introduces the
countr y’s youth to investing and the
stock exchange, says a JSE
st at e m e n t .
In 2018, the challenge attracted
more than 22,000 pupils and
university students.
Corporate Social Investment (CSI)
officer at the JSE, Ralph Speirs, said:
“This challenge is a great vehicle for
financial literacy. There are plenty of
valuable lessons on investment that
young bright minds take away from
participating in a challenge of this
n at u r e . ”
Speirs said the JSE Investment
Challenge, which runs from March to
September each year, impacts more
than just the lives of the young
people who participate. Through the
learners’ and students’ par ticipation,
the message is spread throughout
their communities, Speirs explains.
The challenge takes the form of a
simulator where each team of four
learners or students from the same
school or institution are given an
imaginary sum of R1-million.
With this imaginary amount the
teams trade on the stock market and
invest in actual JSE listed shares
over a six-month period.
What they learn in this time has
great potential to positively impact
the South African economy in the
future.
Participation is open to pupils
between grades 8 and 12, as well as
students from higher learning
institutions. The various teams
compete with one another
countr ywide.
According to the statement, there
are plenty of prizes to be won on a
monthly basis.
There are also annual prizes for
top-performing teams, schools,
teachers and mentors.
The team that wins the JSE
Investment Challenge, receives cash
deposits into an investment account
for each of the team members and
the top-performing university team is
awarded a trip to an international
stock exchange.
“We are calling on schools,
teachers, and students to heed the
call to register and acquire this
knowledge and these skills this year.
The long-term ramifications of what
they learn will impact positively on
their lives in the future,” said Speirs.
For further information on the
challenge, visit w w w. schools.jse.co.za.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange
is based in South Africa where it has
operated as a market place for the
trading of financial products for 130
years.
It connects buyers and sellers in
equity, derivative and debt markets.

Parkrunners keep it cool
On Saturday 216 people ran, jogged and walked the course of
the Komani parkrun at the Queenstown Golf Club in cool
weather conditions.
A total of 23 were first timers, while 25 recorded personal
best times.
There were visitors from Port Elizabeth and East London
Congratulations to Stanley Goeiman and Sharon Kriedeman
on completing their 50th parkrun.
development started at the lower level
and this discouraged the youth who
were willing to play.
The LFA’s Ringo Klaas had said the
tournament would start in the first
week of March and the congress was
scheduled for Sunday.
He said one of the challenges the
team faced in the tournament was that
pedestrians had walked across the field
while the match was in progress. The
junior teams also struggled to find
sponsors for football kit and other basic
“We are here to identify young players who
have graduated from mini cricket to play hard
grips with playing hard ball in July. We focus on
the under-10s up, after which they can graduate
from mini cricket. However, the teachers are
the foundation phase as part of the learning
However he was worried to see the sport
Soyo said this was evident in the state of the
SEAN HEIDEMANN
A small field of golfers took on the stormy and
rainy conditions last Saturday. The format was a
betterball bonus bogey and Jannie Rossouw
and Juan Bekker played great golf to win on
plus 10. In second place, with an equally good
score of plus 9, were Johnny de Villiers and
Martin Hammill, third were David Thomas and
Juan Bekker, who pivoted on plus 2.
There was only one two club, achieved by
Martin Hammill on the eighth. Please try to get
your Joplin Rendall matches finished as soon
as possible. The final must take place by the
end of February.
By the time this article is printed, the golf
AGM would have taken place and my term as
golf captain would have come to an end.
Both Wayne Bennett and I would like to thank
all the golfers for their support over the past
two years and trust that all of you will support
the new golf captain, Danie Nel, and his
vice-captain, JP Bingle. Wayne Bennett will be
handing over the checking of score cards and
HNA network duties to Bingle, but it will take a
month or two for that process to happen.
Feel free to contact the club if you have any
golf issues or queries.
