HOWTO ...
Color Your Hair at Home
Navigate the World of Hair Dyes and Color Touch-Ups with Confidence
by Lauren Salinero
You’ve decided it’s time for a
change. We’ve all been there.
Coloring your hair is a great way to
mix up your look without buying a
whole new wardrobe, but it can also
be intimidating to do at home. With
a few helpful tips, you can dye your
hair with confidence.
Choosing a color is the first step
to dyeing your hair at home, and it’s
imperative to do your research. Think
about what you’re trying to accomplish.
Are you covering grays? Are
you trying to make a statement? Do
you want a color that looks natural?
Also, be aware of how different colors
will look against your skin tone. How
often do you want to dye your hair?
Some colors, like red, fade faster than
others and will need to be touched up
more often to keep your look. For your
first time, go a shade or two lighter
than you think you need — it’s much
easier to darken dyed hair than it is to
lighten it. For multidimensional colors
or drastic changes, consult a coloring
specialist before you proceed on your
own. Major changes are best left to
the professionals.
Be Prepared
You’ve picked out your color and
shopped for all your supplies. You’re
ready to dye, right? Not quite. There
is no such thing as too much prep
work. The first thing you want to do,
especially if this is your first time, is
do a strand test to make sure the color
comes out as expected and your
hair doesn’t get damaged. Your No.
1 priority should always be to maintain
healthy hair. If anything you apply
to your hair causes damage or
skin irritation, stop immediately.
Once your strand test is complete
and you’re confident with moving
forward, it’s time to prep your work
station. Dyeing your hair takes a few
tools and a lot of cleanup — almost
like cooking a complicated meal. You
need your recipe, ingredients and
cookware organized and easily accessible.
Lay out everything you’ll be
using in the order that you’ll need it.
Clean out your bathroom (or whichever
room you’re using) or use towels
to cover anything you don’t want to get
dye on. Wear a button-down shirt that
you don’t have to pull over your head
to take off and that you don’t mind ruining.
You will get dye on it. There is no
avoiding the inevitability. Dye will get
places you never even realized. Keep
a stack of cleaning wipes handy, so
you can wipe up dye as you go, including
any that gets on your skin. A
good trick is to smear Vaseline on your
forehead, along your hairline and over
your ears before you get started. This
will protect that skin from staining.
If you are working in a bathroom,
make sure you have a fan or some
way to ventilate the room. Open a
window if possible. Fumes from the
dye can be very overwhelming. If you
have any respiratory issues, it might
be best for you to go to a salon. Go
ahead and also change out your
shower curtain with a liner that can
get dye on it. When you wash out the
dye, it will get everywhere. Have a
comb, gloves, handheld mirror and
hair clips ready to use, as well.
Do the Dye
Start with dirty — meaning not recently
washed — dry hair. Mix your
dye with your developer. If you are
using a box dye, there may be other
ingredients to add to your bottle —
mix as directed. Separate your hair
into sections and make sure there are
no tangles. Start applying the dye to
your roots and work your way down
the strands to the ends. Make sure
you work the dye into the entire chunk
of hair, so every strand gets colored.
Once you have permeated your hair
with dye, you can loosely pin it to the
top of your head or use a shower cap
It is not uncommon for
a family business owned and
managed by an individual to be the
only income that the family relies
upon. Should a business owner die,
the family business, together with
all its assets, may be lost entirely.
Then what happens to the family?
Often, business owners do
not contemplate what would happen to their business or their family if they
were to die or become incapacitated. Is there a transition plan in place such as
a buy-sell agreement or other method of estate planning? Who would take over
ownership and operations? Consider the following.
Robert was a sole proprietor of a business with staff of 5 employees. In
business for over 10 years, he managed all aspects of the business including daily
operations.
Robert had a heart attack and was hospitalized. None of Robert’s employees
knew enough about the business to run it during his absence. Robert was too ill
to direct his employees from his hospital bed, so the business virtually stopped
until Robert could recover.
Robert returned to work but unfortunately, 6 months later he had a second
fatal heart attack. In the months leading up to his death, Robert took no
precautions to protect his business and still had no one capable of running the
business after his death. As a sole proprietor, Robert was the business and his
heirs knew nothing about running it. Because Robert made no provisions to
Don’t Lose The Family Business
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
transfer his business at his death with proper estate planning to protect his
family, his business was dissolved, and all assets were disposed of through
probate of his estate.
Had Robert designated someone to run the business in his absence
or to establish a business succession plan at his death, liquidation could
have been avoided and the business could have continued to operate even
during the probate of Robert’s estate. Robert’s heirs would not have been
burdened with selling the assets and Robert’s personal representative may
have merely transferred the business to a previously selected successor at an
already established price.
Business owners should not ignore the possible consequences of
failing to plan for business continuation or transfer. Ownership interests in
businesses are like any other assets; they must be transferred to someone or
some other entity when the owner dies.
While probate is generally required to accomplish the transfer, the
owner can designate who will take ownership of the business. Otherwise,
the business interest will pass to the spouse, children or other heirs, of
the deceased owner. While this may be desirable in some cases, often
the spouse or children, who may know nothing about the business, would
rather sell it; or a business partner may not want to be in business with the
spouse or children of the deceased owner.
If you own a business and do not have any business succession or
estate planning in place, contact an attorney and
discuss how to protect your family from losing the
family business.
n Ocoee historic downtown
undergoing revitalization
As part of Ocoee’s historic
downtown revitalization, Oakland
Avenue, between Bluford Avenue
and Lakewood Avenue, is closed
for reconstruction through April 8,
2019. Traffic on Bluford Avenue is
not affected. Traffic on northbound
Lakewood Avenue approaching
Oakland Avenue is directed
to turn right toward Lakeshore
Drive. The sidewalk on the south
side of Oakland Avenue through
the closed section of the block
remains open for pedestrian access
to Ocoee elementary and
middle schools.
When the construction work is
completed, Oakland Avenue will
be transformed into a cul de sac
that will be permanently closed to
through traffic, making it a safer
and more liveable public space. It
will have angled parking on both
sides with an attractive brick paver
surface. The new Oakland Avenue
will have access only from Bluford
Avenue and will no longer connect
to Lakewood Avenue. Oakland
Avenue will end at the entrance
of the Ocoee Lakeshore Center
parking lot. The Ocoee Lakeshore
Center, west Orange County’s
premier event destination, is currently
under construction to provide
a 400-seat main facility and a
separate 125-seat space. The project
is scheduled to be completed
this April.
Robotic Surgery Revolutionizes Patients’ Lives
Innovative. Precise. Life-changing.
All words to describe the various
advantages that have come from
the use of robotic surgery among
patients within Orlando Health
hospitals.
Certified as a Center of Excellence
in Robotic Surgery from the Surgical
Review Corp., Orlando Health
Dr. P. Phillips Hospital surgeons
have found that robotic surgery
has given patients the opportunity
to have crucial surgeries in a
less-invasive manner.
“The overall goal of Orlando
Health is to give patients more options
for minimally invasive surgeries,
with less complications and reduced
recovery time,” said Bobby L.
Gibbons II, M.D., a general surgeon
specializing in hernia repairs
and bowel/colon resections.
Better Recovery, Less Invasive
Robotic surgery was first introduced
to Orlando Health hospitals
more than a decade ago and used
Richard Real, M.D., FACOG, achieves Master Surgeon status from the Surgical Review
Corp. for demonstrating an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe,
effective, evidence-based care.
primarily for surgeries in urology controls, and the 3-D visualization
and gynecology. The past five years that we get from the robot is where
have brought robotics into the fields it really surpasses the laparoscopic
of colorectal surgery and head and system in a lot of cases,” said Luke
neck surgery.
M. Elms, M.D., a general surgeon
Currently, Orlando Health is one who uses robotic surgery for 75 percent
of the largest epicenters for the da
of his inguinal hernia repairs
Vinci Robot, built by Intuitive using and also for bowel/colon resections.
Xi and Si platform models. The platforms
“Overall, the benefit I have seen
consist of the robot itself and with robotic surgery, apart from sur-
then a console for surgeons to view geries before, is the recovery seems
and guide the robot during surgeries.
to be faster and less painful,” he
The hospital currently uses an Xi said.
model.
Drs. Gibbons and Elms both agree
Several procedures in these fields that being able to send patients
that were previously done with open home with minimal-to-zero pain
or laparoscopic surgery now can be medication is a true reward of using
performed with a robotic machine robotic surgery, lessening the possibility
to bring greater visualization to the
of an opioid dependence,
surgeon and smoother recovery for which is a national crisis.
the patient.
“The hernia risk for infection postop
“In several ways, it follows a lot of
is lower, and aesthetics are bet-
how we do surgeries laparoscopically,
ter, as well, on the body,” Dr. Elms
but the extra dexterity that the said. “Patients are usually getting
robot provides, the finer movement out of the hospital sooner, and we
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
are able to give people less narcotics,
so the recovery progresses much
faster.”
Despite what some patients might
think, both surgeons advise their patients
that the robot is not the one
conducting the surgery. The robot
and console are placed right next to
the patient in the surgery room so the
robot does the work, but the doctor
is there to direct the robot and make
adjustments when needed.
“The difference is instead of physically
standing by the bedside with an
instrument you can open and close
with your hand, you are sitting at
a console to control the instruments
and instead of moving like a normal
wrist would move, the robot is able
to move more directions,” said Dr.
Gibbons, who has performed robotic
surgery for three years. “It just
can’t be matched in laparoscopy.”
The success of robotic surgery
among patients encouraged
Orlando Health to broaden its horizons
to see what other procedures
robotics can be used for in the future.
This spring, the hospital will expand
its robotic surgery program by
adding a second robot, an Si model.
“Robotic surgery is an explosive
field of research, and there are some
places worldwide that are doing
coronary bypass procedures with
the robot,” Dr. Elms said. “Orlando
Health is on the forefront of robotic
surgery and will continue to incorporate
the most advanced procedures
available in order to provide patients
with optimal care.”
Dr. Gibbons concluded it best by
saying robotic surgery is giving a
greater portion of patients access to
minimally invasive care and allowing
doctors to do surgeries better than in
the past.
Children at Christ The King Lutheran Preschool were off to
a fun start to the year last month, when the preschool held its
Donuts and Dad event, which featured Krispy Kreme
doughnuts. On a healthier note, the students also were treated
to a presentation by Healthy Herb and talked about healthy
eating. They were visited by a local pediatrician, Dr. Gordon,
who demonstrated a typical checkup at the doctor’s office. In
addition, there were many projects to create and imaginations
soared while playing with “snow.”

I choose to feel
fantastic.
I’m 85 years young with 14
grandchildren and like to keep
busy. After struggling with fatigue
and fainting spells, I was diagnosed
with a faulty heart valve.
The doctors at Orlando Health
corrected the problem through
a minimally invasive procedure
called transcatheter aortic valve
replacement (TAVR). Today, I have
my energy back and my daughter
often tells me to slow down!
I am Alba,
and I choose Orlando Health.
