lack of commitment and motivation.
State of the Art Facilities
We moved into our brand new £27.4 million building in February 2011. Our unique building was inspired by our
local area, taking special inspiration from our connections with the docks of Liverpool and the sea. Our specialist
STEM themed wing caters for everything engineering and science based and our language based areas have been
designed to promote conversation and reading. Our sporting facilities are second to none!
The Big Jump - Transition Tales
All teachers and parents are aware that the move from primary to secondary school can be quite a demanding time for
children, and that is why here at Litherland High School we aim to ensure that we make the transition from Year 6 to Year 7 as
stress-free and smooth as possible. We will do our utmost to make sure students quickly settle into their new routines and
adapt to learning in a different environment.
We have established excellent working relationships with all local primary schools with our teachers visiting schools and
teaching in lessons in some schools. Students also get the chance to visit us here at LHS to take part in curriculum taster
sessions. All staff including our Year 7 Teachers, Head of Year and Assistant Head of Year have the experience of supporting
new students and their families through the transition process and we are always at hand to address individual queries and
concerns.
We have a Taster Day in July so that students can sample what life is like at LHS. We also have an Induction Evening where
new students and parents can find out all about school life at LHS. Litherland High provides an amazing extra-curricular
programme and actively promotes these opportunities to new and existing students as a platform for making new friends and
trying new things.
Behaviour for Learning &
Rewards
Litherland High School has long been a vital and integral part of the local community, working with parents and
carers to ensure a positive, happy and successful learning experience for our young people. We all acknowledge that
exemplary standards of behaviour are essential components of a successful education. The promotion of good
behaviour in school depends on the quality of learning and teaching which takes place, the value students attach to
education and their knowledge of their rights and responsibilities in relation to it, positive and constructive
relationships based on mutual respect, the consistent use of a clear, transparent and fair system of behaviour
management used by all staff and understood and valued by students, parents and carers and a school culture
permeated by the use of praise, encouragement and rewards.
Good work and attitude are rewarded through both the Livo system and through the awarding of certificates and
prizes. A conscious effort is made by all our staff to recognise individual achievement and to suitably reward good
behaviour and attendance.
Rewards are issued for lots of different reasons including attendance, standard of work and representing the school
in a positive way.
Praise points are accumulated to achieve Livos, which are the ‘currency’ of our school.
For more information about Behaviour for Learning and our Rewards system please visit our website.
Attendance & Punctuality
Regular and punctual attendance is essential in ensuring that every individual can have full access to the
opportunities provided by school and can reach his or her full potential. We take this very seriously at
LHS and we expect parents to ensure that every effort is made to reach a goal of 100% attendance and
punctuality.
Parents can help by ensuring that:
Students set off in good time to be at school by 8.45am.
Dental and medical appointments are made outside school hours whenever possible.
Family holidays are not taken during term time.
The school will inform parents as soon as possible if their child has not been registered or
signed in late. In this case we expect parents to contact school as soon as possible with a
reason for absence.
As a school we do not authorise family term time holidays,
which is in line with Sefton Local Authority’s stance that such
absences are not to be authorised.
Parents do not have the automatic right to withdraw their
child from school for a holiday.
Is broad, balanced and relevant to their development
Challenges students to use their skills and abilities to the highest standard
Promotes equality of opportunity, the importance of healthy lifestyles and develops an understanding
of the student’s role as an active citizen within the school and the wider community.
Student Leadership
Junior Leadership Team
At Litherland High, we provide a wide range of opportunities for students to develop as citizens, both of the school and the
wider community.
Student leadership opportunities are many and varied, enabling students to use and develop their leadership skills:.
A Junior Leadership Team is in place with Head Boy and Girl as well as Prefects in Year 11. In addition, each year group has a
school council which serves as the link between the students and the leadership of the school. These opportunities allow the
students to learn that they can effect positive change and take on roles of responsibility which prepare them for life beyond
school.
Ambassadors
At LHS we also have a large team of Ambassadors, Mentors and Young Leaders who play a big part in day to day school life.
We have Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, Attendance Ambassadors, Peer Mentors, Sports Leaders, Information and Communication
Assistants to name but a few. To find out more about student leadership please visit the ‘Student Leadership’ page on our
Life After LHS
Life after GCSEs is full of possibilities! It is very important to us that when students leave LHS they have a plan for
their future, be that a place at a sixth form college, an apprenticeship or work based training. Whatever the chosen
route, each student receives individual advice and guidance to help them make the correct decision for their next step.
LHS students visit local businesses and universities to find out about the opportunities that are available to them at
local, national and international level.
There are opportunities to take part in Mock Interviews, Enterprise Days and Careers Fairs and there are frequent
college and apprenticeship drop in sessions throughout the year.
Enrichment
All students have the opportunity to participate in an extensive after school and lunchtime programme of
activities designed to support and enhance the day-to-day curriculum. We believe that taking part in activities
outside of the classroom is an invaluable way for students to build positive relationships, develop self-esteem and
lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
In School:
Students can participate in Drama Club, Chess Club, Literature Club, Pi and Maths, Debating Society and Classical
Studies as well as many sports including basketball, netball, gymnastics and football. Recently, a school newspaper
team has been set up which allows students to share their ideas and use their literacy skills. Please visit the school
website for the full timetable of clubs.
Our students have gone on to win awards and take part in some fantastic experiences due to their participation in
enrichment activities.
For more details about the clubs we have on offer, please visit our website.
Pushing Boundaries
Outside of School:
There are many educational visits which relate to the curriculum such as field trips, revision sessions and
curriculum enrichment on our Super Learning Days. Students also have the opportunity to undertake the
Duke of Edinburgh Award (Bronze) as well as represent the school in a variety of sports competitions.
Outside of the Country:
Students have the opportunity to take part in exchange programmes with partner schools in Spain and the
Czech Republic. We have a ski trip to Europe and the USA which is open to all students and just last year a
group of students visited the Euro Space centre in Belgium!
Pastoral Care
Learning is most effective in an environment where students feel safe, secure and happy. We are
proud of the strength of the pastoral care and enrichment programmes we offer here at LHS,
focused on supporting all students in their wellbeing, as well as helping them to develop a sense of
responsibility for their physical and social environment.
All staff at LHS are committed to working in partnership with parents, to caring for our students
and fostering their personal development. Showing flexibility in the face of individual circumstances,
helping to develop independence, teaching students to take responsibility for their actions and
supporting their social development are all part of this pastoral work
Curriculum
At Litherland High School we are committed to providing an enjoyable, broad, balanced, high-quality curriculum
which fully prepares students for higher education and employment and enables students of all abilities to excel
academically and socially. It is designed to challenge students, present new opportunities for learning and enable
them to develop new, transferable skills.
Students will be expected to show an increased level of maturity and a growing sense of responsibility for their own
work and progress. Year 7 students will study a number of subjects that they may not have been previously
introduced to and will study other subjects in greater depth. Opportunities related to social, moral, spiritual and
cultural development enrich the curriculum alongside personal, social and health education programmes. Strategies
to develop skills in literacy and numeracy are firmly embedded in each subject area.
All GCSE subjects follow a 3 year programme to facilitate the mastery of skills within each subject area. This
approach ensures that students are able to study subjects in greater depth to maximise their progress and
achievement.
English & Humanities
English
English is a thriving and lively area at Litherland High where we strive to ensure that students enjoy our subject and progress in
all lessons. We pride ourselves on our good relationships with students and our commitment to improving standards of
teaching and learning.
Students are encouraged and expected to achieve all aspects of this subject. To ensure this happens, teaching staff cater for the
personal needs of individual students by using a range of teaching and learning styles. This may mean that students are asked to
work individually or in groups or it may mean using our dedicated ICT area to access key information from other sources.
Whatever the strategy is, we believe students will agree that English lessons are enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding.
Humanities
The humanities department consists of Geography, History and Religious Studies. Geography allows students the opportunity
to explore the world that they live in. Looking at both human and physical Geography.
History is perhaps more important than ever before as students discover not only the joys of a good historical story but also
its importance in understanding the world and its people as it is today. Enjoy learning about people and their societies,
economies, cultures and the environment and learn and develop a wide range of skills. Religious Education offers students the
opportunity to discuss, debate and challenge their own opinions and the opinions of others. It allows students to question and
reflect on many social, moral and cultural issues exploring the world and society around us.
19
0151 214 3434 www.litherlandhigh.com

STEM Subjects
Science
A high quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of
Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Science is vital to the world’s future prosperity. We believe that all students should be taught
essential aspects of the knowledge, methods and uses of science. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts,
students are encouraged to recognise the power of rational thought and develop a sense of curiosity about science in the
world around them.
Technology
In food technology there is a strong emphasis on the gaining of practical skills, whilst working in a safe and hygienic
environment. The course covers basic nutrition and homework is set when it is felt necessary to supplement theory work or
to revise before a test. Students have the opportunity to work as individuals or as part of a group.
Engineering
This is a curriculum subject that is aimed at students interested in entering the business world of architecture, engineering and
professional construction careers. It is an industry backed programme which provides a valuable route to a professional career.
Mathematics
The Mathematics department aims to develop students' abilities to calculate, to reason logically, algebraically and geometrically,
to solve problems and handle data. We believe we have a responsibility to the students to not only guide and support them
through their school education but to also foster skills which will prepare them for the demands of life.
Languages
There is the opportunity to study three languages at LHS, Spanish, French and Chinese.
Spain is one of the UK’s major economic partners. Communication, negotiation and travel are all greatly
facilitated by the ability to speak Spanish. The acquisition of Spanish will therefore be a considerable asset
for 21st century adults, especially in the fields of business, marketing, tourism, law and the service
industries to name but a few.
There are more than 220 million French speakers around the world and it is the second most widely
spoken language in the world. International businesses prefer to hire people who speak more than one
language and French is the ideal language as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations.
Skilled linguists have never been so much in demand! With more than 955 million speakers, Mandarin
claims the top spot as the world’s most common language. China has become a huge market, and
business leaders are looking for people who can speak Chinese and operate successfully in a Chinese
cultural context.
21
Physical Education
Physical education helps students to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies to live healthy and
physically active lives at school and for the rest of their life.
During KS3 these units are delivered through a variety of sports including: Gymnastics/Trampolining, Dance,
Hockey, Netball, Football, Rugby, Badminton,Tennis, Orienteering/Team Building, Aerobics/Zumba, Health Related
Exercise, Rounders, Athletics, Volleyball, Handball and Dodgeball.
GCSE PE students develop knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activities. They learn to examine
the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance and, through a variety of roles, will find ways
to improve their own performances. They will identify ways to develop and
maintain a healthy active lifestyle through participation in physical activity and appreciate the benefits of
promoting “sport for all”.
Here at LHS we also have access to the facilities at Litherland Sports Park including the athletics
facilities, fitness suites and 3G football pitches.
Art & Photography
The Art and Photography department aims to provide opportunities for students to experience a full
range of creative, practical and exciting projects. Our target is that all students reach their potential
and have a real sense of pride in their work. We have a state of the art photography studio and all
students have the use of digital SLR cameras. Students have the opportunity to go on several trips to
develop their art and photography work including London, Dublin and Barcelona! We also have an
outdoor art classroom which gives the students the opportunity to work outdoors. Every year we
have an Art and Photography Exhibition for the parents and local communtity where students get the
chance to showcase their work.
Performing Arts
Drama is part of the thriving Performing Arts community at Litherland High School.
Drama is taught at KS3 and KS4 in our activity studios. The Drama Department also offers high quality
extra-curricular programme that allows students to extend their skills and learning beyond the
classroom while indulging their passion for the subject. Music provides a stimulating and rewarding
programme of study that enables students to develop their musical imagination and creativity. Students
can develop their technical skills on an instrument or as a singer, and become increasingly confident,
expressive and mature as a performer.
We have fantastic facilities for Performing Arts including our state of the art Starry Nights Theatre,
dance and activity studios, music and practice rooms and a fully equipped recording studio.
