I was having a great time working for NASA, making robotic dinosaurs, medical devices. I wanted to get the word out and teaching is a great way to do that. I wanted to change perceptions. Going into a university with students, they are young and more impressionable. I wanted it to be normal – not only for females but males too – for woman to be in engineering. Because after all, one of their professors was female. I’ve had my fair share of moments that make me want to laugh and cry at the same time. When I started at the University of Portland, all my mail got delivered to the school of nursing, because they couldn’t believe that I could possibly be in engineering. Overall, it has been fine. In general my colleagues have made me feel very welcome and accepted. I am hoping by started this minor here in biomedical engineering that we can attract more female students. I heard you had a bit of an accident recently when playing volleyball. What happened? I like to get personally involved in my work. My research is in fracture healing and I have designed plates very similar to the ones they stuck in my wrists. In January, it was quiet at the university and I was a little bored. My colleague invited me to play volleyball at lunch and I jumped at the chance. We were having fun playing three on three, laughing and having a good time. I started running backwards and I lost my balance and put my hands back and I immediately felt excruciating pain, it was awful. I had a distal radius fracture in both wrists. The right one required surgery for what is called a colles fracture, when you fall on an outstretched hand and break off the end of the radius – mine broke into three pieces. I have to say I appreciated what quality care I have received throughout this entire ordeal, especially with ACC. The surgery went well; but there was a lot of stress, ‘how am I going to wash my hair?’ I had someone come over three times a week and scrub my hair for me, it was a luxury. I had a taxi service to get me to and from appointments. Had help with grocery shopping, prepping food, it takes such a burden off people to not worry ‘how am I going to pay for this?’ What’s next for you? I am going to the Solomon Islands this week. I am developing work experience for biomedical engineering students. A lot of developing countries received donated hospital equipment from other places. Then the equipment breaks down or needs cleaning and they don’t know how to, so it just gets stockpiled in a warehouse. So what programmes like Engineering World Health do is send students to these countries and teach them how to repair hospital equipment. They teach them not only to repair things but to teach local technicians how to maintain them. So I sent two students to Uganda this summer. I am partnering with a New Zealand NGO called Take My Hands and Fisher and Paykel Healthcare to establish our own programme in the Pacific Islands, starting with the Solomon Islands. We are travelling there this week to meet with hospital administrators.

Needing to remember the important things MEMORIES: Vittoria with her great-grandmother Mary Miller at Christmas. I LOST THE race against time this week. This term, Vittoria’s swimming lessons are on a Monday. We headed there as per normal, she had a great time as per normal. And then we went to wash and change as per normal. Here my race began. I had forgotten to restock the nappy bag. It was like a lead weight in my gut realising that. Honestly, it was like some kind of nightmare – I’m sure other parents will sympathise. Or else they’re thinking I’m some kind of idiot, lying to themselves that they’ve never done it. I know you have. So I had to take a big risk; put on Vittoria’s clothes and race home to get a new nappy. Racing against the possibility that she would wet said clothes, or worse, without any idea of when that may or may not happen. Like I said, nightmare. So I rushed us home, hoping against hope. I lost anyway. I got home and she needed some fresh clothes. A VITTORIA & Matt lesson to be learnt on my part. Well, after a bit of lightheartedness, I need to touch on why last week was so hard on us as a whānau. On Wednesday last week, my Nan, Vittoria’s greatgrandmother, Mary Miller passed away at 91. Her funeral was on Saturday, her 92nd birthday. She was an amazing woman, fierce, determined, sharp as a tack and as equally at home wearing the most elegant clothes at high society events as she was flinging out her fishing line to haul in a catch of blue cod wearing a man’s flannel shirt. Widowed young, my Nan successfully raised six children as a single mother in the 1950s. Proper tough. I am so glad that my daughter and she could meet and that I had her in my life for so long. I dearly hope that I will be able to teach Vittoria to be like her and to love the heritage that my Nan has given her.
