Accolades/Accomplishments: Congratulations to Region 1 member Sue Weaver as leader of Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation NJ(HNHNNJ) together with co-workers Tracy Jaworski-Lucas, Kiki Magno and Lisa Ertle. They are the recipients of ANA’s Nurse Sign-Up Challenge Award! Thank you to the HNHNNJ Team for working faithfully for nurses’ well-being. At the Region 1 January meeting, there was a presentation of the ANA $10,000 award check to NJSNA President Kate Gillespie and Healthy Nurse Healthy Nation New Jersey Team. Region 1 Vivek Agnihotri is nominated for a Don Award. He has demonstrated outstanding achievement as a positive influence on the profession. Vivek, an active Region 1 member, generously donated monies towards Region 1’s first Education Scholarship. The 2019 Don and Diva will be honored at the NJSNA Gala event on April 4th, 2019 in Princeton. Make plans to attend. Events/Meetings: Many Region 1 officers attended NJSNA Installation on Jan. 5. Region 1’s Business meeting/ Research Day was held at Chilton Hospital on Jan. 19. Several nurses participated in the March 9th St Patricks Day Parade in Hacketstown. On March 16 at Morristown Medical Center, Ingrid Johnson, RN MSN provided a continuing education program addressing Human Trafficking. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: May 9, 2019, Thursday-Annual Meeting/ Dinner, 6-9 pm Keynote Speaker TBA, Rockaway River Country Club, Denville,NJ June 15, 2019, Saturday, Meeting 11 am-1 pm NJSNA Judy Schmidt, MSN, DHA(c), RN, CCRN, CEO, NJSNA Newton Medical Center Community Service Region 1 President Sandy Foley spoke at the William Paterson University NJ State Student Nurses Association Induction ceremony in November highlighting NJSNA. Thank You Region 1 member Eileen Specchio for hosting the documentary Defining Hope at the College of St. Elizabeth. A lively discussion on end of life issues and hospice concluded the event. At the event, VP of Membership LauKrause held a Birth Haven Holiday wish list drive. Thank you to everyone who donated gift cards, and toiletries. Region 1 provided non-perishable food items to soup kitchens in four counties we served and donated $100 towards Thanksgiving meals for people in Sussex County. Region 1 assisted in a soup kitchen in Dover, in February conducting a sock drive donation and supplied food for/and will prepare a meal in April. Nurses assist at the Chester Science Fair annually in March. Would you like to present some new research or project for professional advancement? Region 1 Call for Nominations for Board positions: President-Elect – Assume all duties of the President in the President’s absence. Vice President for Membership – Encourage new members’ participation in Region activities with assistance of County Coordinators. Vice President for the Institute – Oversee fund-raising activities in the Region to benefit the Institute of Nursing. Vice President to the Congress on Policy and Practice – Represent the Region on NJSNA’s Congress on Policy and Practice. Morris County Coordinator – Encourage Morris County members to attend the Region meetings and activities and to chair the annual dinner meeting on a rotating basis. Sussex County Coordinator – Encourage Sussex County members to attend the Region meetings and activities and to chair the annual dinner meeting on a rotating basis. Nominations Committee – 2 Positions – Oversee nominations and election activities. All terms of office are two years: from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2021. If you are interested or wish to serve in one of these positions, please email Sue Weaver at sweave29@gmail.com Region 2 Bergen and Hudson Counties Fatima Sanchez, MSN, RN, President Region 2 Region 2 is off to an excellent start; The Region calendar will include reaching out to local colleges of nursing programs to speak with the senior students; hopefully these activities will encourage new graduates to join New Jersey State Nurses Association. New nurses will be invited to join the “New to Practice Nurses” group, which was spearheaded by NJSNA President-Elect Mary Ellen Levine. In addition, the Region budget was approved by the members. Region Bylaws were reviewed and sent to NJSNA, however, there are members who may suggest changes. Bylaws were sent electronically for the entire membership to review. April 2019 New Jersey Nurse & Institute for Nursing Newsletter Page 5 R egion News Region Nurses Recognized Region 2 had several members recognized for excellent community services; Patricia August was selected by the New Jersey Local Boards of health as the Public Health Nurse of the year. A celebration dinner was attended by NJSNA and Region board members. Linda Corigliano ran two races 5K and a half Marathon; she continues to keep up with the initiative, Healthy Nurse Health Nation. Congratulations to both Region nurses on remarkable accomplishments. Region 2 would like to thank the new 2019 Board Members, Member at Large: Patricia August and Dr. Benjamin Evans, VP Communications: Dr. Evadne Harrison Madu, and Treasurer: Myla Pasaporte. Also, a big thank you to all of our previous board members. The Region’s first Volunteered Community Service was held at the Family Promise Shelter in Hackensack. More than 110 delighted and thankful people were fed. A big thank you to Mary Carroll-Dickson for this opportunity to support the community. Meetings A Region meeting was held at Bayada, Saddle Brook, NJ, January 30: Updates of Pneumococcal Pneumonia and Meningitis B were presented by Pfizer. The May Region meeting will be held in Hudson County; the goal is to have improved outreach with our Bergen/Hudson membership. We will continue to offer General Membership Meetings utilizing Zoom! An email with the log on directions will be sent via Region 2 e-blast. With all sincerity, the Region 2 board wishes for more participation from our Hudson County members. Posts for Region 2 activities will be e-blasted from our region as they are scheduled. Region 4 Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, Lower Bucks County Beth Knox, DNP, APN, President Region 4 Officers: It is my pleasure to introduce the following newly elected Region 4 Board Members including: Secretary, Alice Huang, VP for Congress on Policy & Practice, Erica Edfort, VP for Communication, Susan Rux, Mercer County Memberat-Large (2yr.) In the fall of this year, we will be electing a president-elect, treasurer, VP for Membership, VP for Nominations and Elections, and Member-at-Large for Somerset and Hunterdon counties. Region 5 Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Sale Summer Valenti, BSN, RN-BC, President Region 5 is pleased to congratulate Kate Gillespie, RN, MBA, NE-BC, on being installed as NJSNA President and Barbara Chamberlain, PhD, MBA, APN, as NJSNA Treasurer. We are proud to have Region 5 represented on the NJSNA Board by such accomplished nurses! Region 6 Atlantic, Cape May, Monmouth, Ocean Kathleen Mullen, DNP, MA, RN, CNE, VP Communications During the winter, the newly elected Executive Board led by President Mary Fortier, held small meet-and-greets in hospitals across the Region in an effort to connect with membership in Atlantic and Cape May counties. At the dinner meeting in February in Ocean County, members discussed the changing role of social media platforms. The new interest in engaging with professional peers in social, educational, and civic activities is expected to impact future Region events. The annual raffle to benefit the Beulah Miller Scholarship for Nursing Education was held at the February meeting. Every year, Region 6 awards scholarships through the Beulah Miller Scholarship for Nursing Education to: a prelicensure entry level student (AAS, ADN or BSN), an RN to BSN student, an MSN student, and a doctoral student. Events in the region for Spring, 2019 include marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Seaside Heights, and an educational program in Monmouth and Atlantic counties. The annual general membership meeting in June will be in Ocean County. RNs in Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic, and Cape May counties: join NJSNA and come to our Region 6 meetings!
