Sharing is caring for service centre
ZINTLE BOBELO
Members of the Queenstown Service Centre
based in Nomzamo recently gifted themselves
with a wooden structure to accommodate elderly
people in the area.
One of the members, Nomthandazo Sopapazi,
who believes in sharing and caring, said the
centre, which is a part of the Komani Older
Pe r s o n s ’ Forum, was established in 2003 and
accommodates men and women of 60 years and
o l d e r.
“There are about 40 of us in this centre and
when we started, we were a group of old women
who wanted to have fun and partake in playful
activities in our own space. As the years went by,
we realised, upon visiting each other in our
homes, that some of these women were left alone
with no-one taking care of them – even though
some were sick and most were lonely.
“We then had to transform our playground into
a full-time centre where we cook, cultivate, spend
time together as old people and share whatever
we have with each other. We also do home visits
for those who are unable to walk.”
Sopapazi said they have managed to buy
furniture through fundraising, but had very
limited space. As a result, some of the old people
have to sit outside their new building.
“We had appealed to the officials of the
Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)
because these premises used to be a dump site.
They have assisted us by cleaning the whole
space and they have also provided a fence to
keep the place clean and safe.”
She said one of the centre’s main challenges
was operating without electricity.
“We bought a stove with the money we
received from fundraising, but for now we are
using a gas stove which can sometimes be very
difficult.”
She said that water and toilets were
non-existent on the premises and were among the
more pressing issues they are hoping to tackle
with intervention from anyone willing to assist.
“Our vision is to gather old people and create a
happy and healthy environment where we support
one another instead of growing old and alone in
our households. We would be glad if we could get
a proper structure or a donation of building
material or any kind of assistance,” Sopapazi said.
ANDISA BONANI
A35-year old man
appeared in the
Ezibeleni
Magist rate’s court on
Monday for allegedly raping
a 13-year-old Nogate Senior
Primary School pupil at his
home on February 14.
Ezibeleni residents, ANC
Wo m e n ’s League members
and Nogate pupils picketed
outside the court demanding
the accused be denied bail
by magistrate Des
Krummeck.
The accused made his
first court appearance on
February 21, and the case
was postponed to Monday.
The victim’s mother, 37,
said she heard about the
incident from two of her
daughter’s friends who said
they wanted to tell her about
something that had
happened to their friend.
“I went to look for my
daughter and asked why she
had not informed me about
the incident.
“She said another child
had told her if she said
anything, she would be in
trouble. I told her father and
we reported the matter to
the police.”
The mother said her
daughter was not coping,
had become forgetful and
seemed scared all the time.
demanding a man accused of rape be denied bail
The victim’s father, 45,
who lives in Chancele, said
he felt immensely upset and
disgusted about what had
happened to his daughter.
“There is nothing as
frustrating and disgusting
for me as raising a daughter
and have a man old enough
to be her father, see a
woman in her. My daughter
is traumatised and trivial
things startle her after this
incident.
“I am livid. I have also
heard this was not the first
time the accused had done
something like this.
“My daughter is
apparently his third victim,
but I am not sure if a case
was opened against him
previously. I hope the justice
system will play its role and
ensure the accused remains
behind bars.”
He said his daughter had
lost trust in men and did not
feel safe.
“The men in my family,
including my brothers, are
trying hard to comfort her
and make her aware that
she is safe with them and
that not all men are as
heartless as the accused.
“She can hardly look
people in the eye when
speaking to them now and
she is not a shy child.
“This has affected her
negatively and that breaks
my heart. She has stopped
going to school while she
receives professional help.”
ANC Women’s League
leader of gender-based
violence against women and
children, Bulelwa Mgijima,
said they condemned the
incident and hoped the
accused would get a hefty
sentence.
“We have submitted a
memorandum to the
magistrate which clearly
states how we feel about the
matter and the negative
effects releasing this man on
bail will have on this
communit y.
“Women and children will
not feel safe if the accused
is released. We want the
government to get rid of
these barbaric molesters in
our communities.”
Mgijima said the victim
and her friend, who was also
traumatised by the incident,
were receiving help at a
crisis centre.
The case was postponed
by Krummeck to Friday,
when the accused will be
expected to make a formal
bail application. He remains
in police custody.

DRDLR pumps in R15m to assist local wine production
ANDISA BONANI
The Department of Rural
Development and Land Reform
(DRDLR) has committed R15m to
the Mayime Winery co-operative
at the Shiloh Irrigation Scheme for
the construction of their own wine
c e l l a r.
This was stated by Chris Hani
District Municipality (CHDM)
mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo during
the third harvest of grapes since
2016, when 3 800 bottles of wine
were produced.
Mayime is the producer of the
Inkosi wine currently sold at the
Komani Pick ‘n Pay store and is
funded by the Chris Hani District
Agency (CHDA).
Vimbayo said the municipality
was also in talks with the
Department of Rural Development
and Agrarian Reform (DRDAR) to
increase the hectares of land on
which the grapes are planted.
“We started harvesting here
around 5am today because under
normal circumstances the
harvested grapes need to be
Union fights staff’s dismissal
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
The Food and Allied Workers
Union (Fawu) is determined to
win the CCMA case of the 30
employees fired by Meat Traders
Abattoir for an alleged go-slow
strike recently, Fawu’s provincial
organiser, Sithembele Kilani, said.
Kilani said the strike allegations
were untrue and came about as a
way of avoiding implementation of
the national minimum wage bill.
“This started in January, when
the wage bill came into effect.
Prior to that Meat Traders had
committed to Fawu that it would
comply with the minimum wage
implementation for its employees,”
he said.
The union was surprised to
learn that the company had
changed the pay dates from
employees receiving their salaries
on the 25th of every month to a
fortnightly payment system.
He said a meeting followed
Winery co-operative last Thursday Picture: ANDISA BONANI
squeezed within four hours. In our
case, all the grapes we harvested
today will be transported by truck
to Cape Town by 9am. This is one
of the reasons we feel we need
own wine cellar so we can make
the wine here and save shipping
between Fawu and the abattoir
team when the union had stated
that employees were satisfied with
receiving their money on the 25th.
However, the company insisted on
fortnightly payment, Kilani said.
“Fawu disagreed with the
reduction of workers’ salaries
because the employer had
committed to honour the minimum
wage payment bill. The company
also cut the working hours, saying
workers should go home after they
had finished slaughtering the
animals for the day. This meant
they were only paid for four to five
hours a day and their salaries had
been reduced to less than they
received last year.”
He said employees had
previously worked from 7am till
5pm. “Meat Traders breached the
act which stipulates that no
working changes should be
implemented without alerting the
union first.
“We want the workers to serve
c o st s . ”
The chairman of Mayine,
Selbourne Cecane, said after the
massive 2016 production of 3 800
bottles of wine, they improved in
the second harvest in 2017 by
producing 12 000 bottles.
for eight hours a day. Before, the
company used to have work for
the employees to do to work
longer hours and they should
continue.
“Some private companies are
lagging behind when it comes to
implementing the labour laws. The
minimum wage law does not state
that companies should decrease
salaries. These are tough
economic times and laying off 30
employees means many
households lose their
breadwinners.”
He said the company had
already introduced new staff to
replace the former employees.
He said the CCMA case was
scheduled for March 15. A former
worker, Lubabalo Hokolo, said: “I
have been working here for 13
years. I had given my all to the job
and now we have been thrown out.
I cannot support my needs.”
“This year we will produce a
greater quantity of Inkosi wine
than the previous harvest because
we did not have much rain, which
negatively affects the produce.
Rain affects the amount of sugar
in the grapes and the lack of it
makes for 100% sugar in them.
“We hope by next year we will
have our own wine cellar.
Engineers have already been here
to view the place which made us
even more hopeful. The cellar will
help create more jobs for young
people who live in Hewu. We
currently employ 30 people full
time and during the harvest
season we increase employment
by a further 100 temporary jobs.
Having the wine cellar would see
more people from this area being
employed on a full-time basis
because we would need cleaners
and people to help with bottling
and other tasks.”
Cecane said he hoped DRDAR
would assist them by enlarging
the land on which they operate
from the current 14ha to 100ha to
increase the production of Inkosi
wine.
employees was not his wish.
“I understand that most people
were breadwinners. We warned
them and pleaded with them to
stop the go-slow, but after three
days of pleading they refused to
st o p . ”
He said the strike cost the
company greatly.
“We were thinking of closing
the company, but we had to
consider the 40 employees who
are still at work. I have replaced
the (30 fired) staff and the new
staff is performing better than the
dismissed one.”
Miles said the company
followed the law before dismissing
the employees.
“I do not know what led to the
staff being disgruntled and
embark on a go-slow. I believe it
could have been avoided. We tried
everything in our power to get
them to go back to work. I am
sorry this had to happen.”
Teacher in trouble for
‘smacking’ a pupil
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
The Chris Hani District West education
department is investigating an
incident in which a six-year-old pupil
was allegedly beaten by a teacher at
Lower Didimala Primary School
recently, department spokesperson,
Malibongwe Mtima says.
The grade 2 pupil from Whittlesea
sustained an injury to his gum and
three molars were damaged in the
alleged incident.
Due to the seriousness of the case,
the SGB held a meeting with the
teachers and resolved to forward it to
the district office to investigate.
The child’s parent, who wants the
teacher dismissed, said: “The
principal asked me to sympathise with
the teacher because it could mean
she would lose her livelihood.
“She said the community would
view her as a principal who had the
teacher fired and it would tarnish the
image of the school.”
The mother said her son’s face was
swollen as a result of the alleged
beating and there were even finger
marks which were spotted by his
grandmother, with whom he lived.
“My mother said my son became
anxious when she asked him what
had happened and eventually said his
teacher had beaten him.
“The next day my mother told him
he must stay out of school as he
should be taken to a doctor, but he
not be removed because his face was
Last week the grandmother was
called to fetch the child from school
because he had a headache.
“When my mother took him to
school and went to the principal’s
office to discuss this she was told the
school would deal with the teacher
and feedback would be given to her.
“When my mother returned to the
school, the principal said the teacher
was sorry about the incident.”
Her mother told her about it over
the phone, and she had to travel from
Johannesburg to attend to the matter.
The mother said this was not the
first time this teacher had terrorised
pupils.
“She used to be my teacher and
she was very harsh. She slapped my
sister and as a result she ended up
repeating the grade. She is
short-tempered. The principal said she
had admitted to slapping the child.
“She is sorry! What about the
wellbeing of my child? They want my
child to change class, but he will
remain terrified because he will be
exposed to the teacher. They said they
would consider getting a transfer for
my child to another school, but what
about the other children?”
Police spokeswoman captain
Namhla Mdleleni said a case of
common assault had been opened.
wheelbarrows full of scrap which was
taken back to the site and the suspects
released after the manager declined to
open a criminal case.
On Friday a farm owner called the
company’s 24-hour control room in the
early hours of the morning and
reported that suspects were stealing.
Response officers were dispatched to
the farm where they chased after the
suspects’ vehicle. They apprehended
one suspect at Lesseyton driving a
vehicle containing 10 stolen sheep. The
matter was handed over to the police.
The same day a response officer
reported that a vehicle had nearly
collided with his while making a U-turn
in front of him in Cathcart Road. He
noticed two women jumping out of the
vehicle and he stopped and rendered
assistance. The women said they had
been kidnapped and were very
traumatised, so they were referred to
the police station.
Later response officers noticed the
vehicle in question at a local garage so
the police were called and the matter
handed over to them.
Residents unhappy with picnic
ANDISA BONANI
Bergsig residents had to call the police
on Sunday evening to have a group of
people removed from the Aalwee
tennis and netball courts, after they
allegedly disturbed the peace with loud
music and littered the area with alcohol
and food containers.
The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in the
Chris Hani region held a power walk on
Sunday morning where participants walked
along the heritage route in Mlungisi,
followed by a picnic at the Aalwee Club in
Bergsig.
The picnic was supposed to have ended
at 6pm, but residents complained that it
took longer than planned.
A resident of Amatola Close which is
adjacent to the club and who keeps keys to
the venue, Colleen Pugh, said Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM)
manager in the office of the chief whip
Zithulele Sigonyela visited her home about
a week ago requesting the keys.
“He came here last Thursday indicating
they would have a picnic, but later changed
the story and said some construction
company wanted to build houses, so it
would need to work on the place.
“I did not know what story to believe, but
he visited again on Saturday asking for the
keys because he claimed they wanted to
DUMPED RUBBISH: The Aalwee tennis clubhouse was surrounded by filled with
clean the place before the picnic took
place. My husband had put locks on all the
gates leading to the courts because there
were vagrants who slept there.
“On Sunday, my husband opened the
gate for them and asked what they would
use as a bathroom because the toilets were
not functioning properly there. There is no
water or electricity there so they put mobile
toilets against our wall.
“They arrived in the afternoon and left
after 9pm. The music and people’s voices
were very loud so it was disruptive for the
residents who live nearby, especially on a
Sunday evening when everyone wants to
rest in preparation for work or school the
following day. When we went to check the
next morning, the locks to the courts were
broken and one window of the club had
been broken.”
Pugh said it was unfair that the picnic
attendees led by the ANCYL left the place
untidy because the local authority did not
maintain the club and the neighbours paid
R500 a month to have it cleaned.
DA councillor Chris de Wet said as the
councillor for the area he was not informed
that there would a public picnic next to a
residential area.
“I arrived there around 9am on Sunday
after receiving complaints from residents,
and found a few people who said they were
from the youth league council and had
permission to use the place from the EMLM
department of parks and recreation. They
said they could not remember the name of
the person they spoke to and also indicated
the picnic would be a once-off thing.
“What shocked me most was the number
of alcohol containers which were scattered
all over the place on Monday morning. In
the poster I have seen they indicated they
were only going to serve soft drinks, but
that clearly was not true. I do not have a
problem with people hosting picnics, but
they could have chosen a different venue,
far away from a residential area and there
would not have been a problem.”
ANCYL secretary Aphiwe Mkhangelwa
indicated the police and traffic department
were informed about the picnic following a
meeting for planning and record-keeping
purposes between the organisation and the
station commander and his team.
“The function ended around 7pm and we
could not have cleaned at night as there
were no lights available in or outside the
clubhouse. I agree that the poster indicated
that there would be soft drinks served, but
that did not mean attendees could not
bring their own kind of drinks. The proper
procedure to obtain the venue was followed
and we had no obligation to go to those
few white people to get their permission.
“The only obligation we had was to give
them a notice informing them about the
function which we did and invited them,
including councillor De Wet who met me on
the morning of the picnic. We ensured the
place was cleaned by Monday afternoon.”
Mkhangelwa said the clubhouse had not
been maintained and had faults when they
arrived which should not be attributed to
them as they did not break any windows.
“The municipality opened the locks for us
and we cleaned the place as it was very
dirty. After the programme, a municipal
representative locked the place. We are not
aware about locks having been broken as
we had keys.”
Police spokesperson Captain Namhla
Mdleleni confirmed ANCYL representatives
had met with station commander Colonel
Loyiso Ngalo and had an agreement that
they would use the venue until 6pm.
“The community policing forum (CPF)
was also aware of this, but residents in the
area complained after 6pm when the noise
did not die down.
“Ngalo and members of the CPF went
there around 7pm to ensure everyone had
left the venue.”
Roll-overs blamed for 25% drop in operating revenue
ANDISA BONANI
The Chris Hani District Municipality
(CHDM) has decreased its operating
revenue by 2% which executive mayor
Kholiswa Vimbayo attributed to unapproved
roll-overs, affecting funds for service
deliver y.
In the proposed third budget adjustment
for the 2018-19 to 2021 mid-term revenue
and expenditure framework (MTRF) report
by the mayor, it was indicated that the
operating revenue would decrease by
R21,8m and other revenue by R64m.
However, Vimbayo said the interest
charged on outstanding consumer debts
had increased substantially by R26m, the
same as the additional revenue realised
from water billing.
Interest on external investments had also
increased by R674,000. Vimbayo proposed
that council approve a R27,365m increase
in operating expenditure and a decrease in
the capital revenue and expenditure by
R41,434m and R82,309m respectively.
UDM councillor Zanemvula Deliwe
questioned the decrease in capital revenue
and expenditure, indicating it would have a
negative impact on service delivery which
was already not up to standard.
“Decreasing revenue meant to serve the
people, is a bad idea. I want to know how
that can be avoided in future,” he asked.
Vimbayo said the first adjustment budget
was tabled in August 2018 and was as a
result of roll-overs, and a second in
November 2018 which was the result of
additional grant allocations from
government.
An adjustment budget for the Chris Hani
District Agency was also tabled, which
reflected that the total approved budget
was R53,4m and there was a deficit
amounting to R1.6m.
Vimbayo said they had received 42% of
the total budget and had spent 46%.
“The reason we have spent more is due
to roll-overs and other expenditure items
which have used up all of the budget in the
first two quarters of the financial year.”

STUT TERHEIM – The storm has broken!
A drive through town is a far sight
better than it was only a week ago. Last
Wednesday at midday, the municipal
shutdown came to an official close. The
decision was reached by members of all
concerned parties that enough was
enough and the time had come to put
the experience of the last five months
to an end and try to bring the
community back to normality.
The launch of the cleaning operation
was attended by many and various
officials and stakeholders from both a
local and provincial level and was
accompanied by an interfaith prayer
meeting for the peace and wellbeing of
Stutterheim, the district and the
Amahlathi Municipality.
The atmosphere in town is so much
more positive since the cleanup began,
with the Rev Simphiwe Mnukiso saying,
“I get up with a smile on my face
because the town is clean again.” Stut t
may take a long time to get over the
trauma it has suffered over the last few
months, but this is certainly a start.
THE Interact Club at Stutterheim High
School also conducted a cleanup of the
school environs, headed by Zenande
Gxasheka, who organised his fellow
students and motivated them to show
their love for their school and personal
learning environment.
The project was a great success and
the grounds are looking wonderful, with
some of the more enthusiastic
members going so far as to do some
weeding in those hard-to-reach places.
This project is envisioned to feed into
the next project the Interactors will
tackle - the creation of ecobricks. An
ecobrick is a plastic bottle filled with
non-biodegradable plastics to a point
SMMEs receive assistance on how
to better understand procurement
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
The Black Management Forum
(BMF), in partnership with the
provincial treasury, informed
Chris Hani suppliers about the
Preferential Procurement Policy
Framework Act on Friday.
The act is aimed at the
implementation of a
procurement policy for a
category of preference in
awarding contracts, and for the
protection and advancement of
the categories of the
disadvantaged majority by unfair
d i s c r i m i n at i o n .
The act is aligned with the
policy framework aims of the
B-BBEE Act. Chris Hani BMF
chair Mabhuti Mpafa said black
small, medium and micro
enterprises were not able to
benefit from the public spending
of the government which
amounted to more than R500bn.
Mpafa said, “To ensure the
participation of small, medium
and micro enterprises [SMMEs]
we need to have programmes
which will enable them to
understand what the Preferential
Procurement Policy Framework
Act entails, so they are able to
benefit from government
funding.”
“In SA, we have a lot of good
policies, but when it comes to
the implementation process, it
becomes a huge problem. We
want to assess if the
government is adhering to the
legislation while also observing
if Chris Hani SMMEs
comprehend the act.”
He said the BMF wanted the
government to increase the 30%
the act set aside for black
SMMEs to 50% or more.
Ayanda Benu of the
department of economic
development, environmental
affairs and tourism (Dedeat)
said the Local and Regional
Economic Development fund
offered assistance to SMMEs.
Benu said the LRED grant
fund aimed to create
employment and fight poverty.
“To apply, you need to be a
legally registered cooperative,
private company or a close
corporation which is tax
compliant from the Eastern
Cape. The company must be
50% black owned with 50%
black management. The closing
date for application is March 15
and forms are available on the
depar tment’s website.”
Benu said the sectors which
qualified for application, were
manufacturing, the auto sector,
ocean economy, tourism and
agro-processing.
He said the company had to
present how it would promote
employment and alleviate
poverty as the main objective of
the department.
where it can hold weight and then used
to build light structures. One of their
next projects is to help build
infrastructure at the Amahlathi SPCA
and they will employ their
environmentally friendly bricks to do it.
ON Thursday night, 10 Stutt High
students went to Clarendon High
School in East London for a South
African Council for English Education
discussion forum. The students had
never had exposure to anything of this
kind before and yet they performed
meritoriously. They formed two teams of
five, with one of them acting as
chairperson, keeping the discussion on
topic and in form.
Alizwa Mahlahla and Zuzole Ngcanga
were both mentioned by name as doing
particularly well in their respective
roles. Alizwa kept her team on topic
and maintained a dignified air in the
discussion, while Zuzole spoke with
great zest and passion. Both teams
returned inspired to become great
debaters, passionate orators and deep,
critical thinkers. They have vowed to do
better next time and wow the
adjudicators and competitors.
Church hosts fun
day to raise funds
ANDISA BONANI
The John Wesley Methodist Church
in Ezibeleni hosted a series of
activities including a fun walk at
Berry Dam to raise funds on
S at u r d ay.
The fun-filled day began with a
fun walk around the dam, followed
by an aerobics class. Church leader
Nomakhaya Tyatyeka said the
decision to host the fund-raiser
was made last year and this month
was specifically chosen because it
was deemed the month of love.
“To also promote a healthy
lifestyle among church members,
they walked around the dam four
times and participated in an hour
aerobics class.
“Other members were preparing
breakfast which was followed by a
braai where meat was sold. Our
target as the town cell is to raise
R40,000 this year, each member is
expected to cell 10 tickets at R100
to make their contribution. Today
we hope to raise at least R2,000.”
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Sport a builder
of society
Sport plays a vital role in
the development of a
society and the
Department of Sport,
Recreation, Arts and Culture
recently announced it was on a
mission to revive rugby and
sport in general in Komani.
Last week, the department
partnered with the Chris Hani
Rugby Sub-Union in organising
a high school rugby sevens
tournament at the Mlungisi
Sports Field.
The tournament was
sponsored by Twizza.
The department says the
event was held to promote and
improve the standard of rugby
in the Komani area.
The tournament received
support from the local
municipality, schools,
businesses as well as members
of the community.
These stakeholders should be
commended for their
cont ributions.
In fact, the department
lauded Twizza for “taking the
initiative of assisting in our
responsibilities of promoting
social cohesion, developing of
our youth through sport activity,
in particular rugby sevens and
allowing the standard of playing
sport to improve”.
The Rep participated in
organising last year’s event but
could not get involved this year
due to changes in management.
This newspaper makes the
undertaking to get involved
again next year and calls on
other organisations and leaders
in the community to follow suit.
Other stakeholders that
deserve applause for their
contributions were the
Emergency Medical Services for
providing their services free of
charge.
They are the section of the
Department of Health that the
organisers are hoping to rope in
as part of the organising team.
After the tournament last
Friday, the department noted
some positive developments
including the playing venue and
the standard of refereeing.
According to the
depar tment’s report, the Enoch
Mgijima Local Municipality
prepared the playing field to
improved standards and this
was appreciated by both the
participants and organisers.
The standard of refereeing
also moved up a notch.
All schools that took part in
the event were from around
Komani, a sign of good things
to come from the local
communit y.
The organisers say the
tournament was a success and
all those who took part are
keen to come back stronger
next year.
It’s all in the
spectacle
I am not sure why people are
surprised or acting surprised at the
resurrection stunt pulled by Pastor
Alph Lukau.
After some of these pastors have
made people eat grass, snakes and
mice and sprayed them with
insecticide, did people expect these
“men of God” to leave it there?
It has always been expected that
each will try and outdo the other by
pulling off an even more bizarre stunt
so as to garner the most attention.
One Pastor
Mboro even
claimed, “When
Satan saw me, he
panicked and
directed his army
to kill me. Like
Samson in the
Bible, I defeated them. Satan was my
last victim.”
Another one, Pastor Paul
Sanyangore from Zimbabwe,
pretended in church to be phoning
God on his cellphone. So what Lukau
did, trying to convince people that he
had brought a dead man back to life,
is another stunt in a long line of
similar ones by these people who
claim to be pastors and prophets.
There seem to be two things they
specialise in – money and sex. Some
relentlessly pursue the commercial
aspect of it and flaunt their wealth
shamelessly everywhere they go.
Others use the guise of religion to
satisfy their twisted sexual desires
and exploit the vulnerable and
impressionable women congregants.
The religion space has been
overwhelmed by those who
specialise in making religion a
spectacle. A question has to be
IN
TOUCH
... with Phumelele P Hlati
asked though: Has religion ever been
anything other than a spectacle?
A cursory look at the Bible finds
hundreds of stories where God
performs miracles to convince people
that he is God and they should
worship Him.
When the Israelites were
wandering in the desert with Moses
and starving, God dropped manna
every day for them to eat. Samson
killed hundreds of Philistines using
the jawbone of a donkey as a
weapon. Jesus
was the master
of miracles and
He performed
m a n y.
So, from the
beginning,
religion has
always relied on miracles or stories
of miracles to convince the faithful of
the power of God.
So why are people acting surprised
when these pastors are constantly
pushing the envelope with their
outrageous stunts?
These people have done the cause
of religion a great deal of harm.
It has also exposed the gullibility
of people. The time has come for
strict regulations to govern churches.
As it is, it is a free-for-all and
people are at the mercy of these
conmen. Just like there is a law
against Ponzi schemes, so this needs
a similar approach.
They must decide whether they are
churches or private businesses. Their
tax-free status must be looked at.
There should be minimum
standards for a church. Failure to
meet those standards must lead to
the closure of these dodgy churches.
I think it is sad that the
themselves, but we do have to
take responsibility for our own
take part, I think it would be
fabulous. I think as individuals
we get to be proud of
something that we have
achieved. Litter has always
Q: What is the best way to create
employment amid the looming fourth
industrial revolution?
A: I think government should focus on
jobs that will be labour intensive instead of
capital intensive so that people can have a
livelihood.
Q: What is your best childhood memory?
A: I grew up with my twin sister and we
used to do everything together. I miss
people who camp outside our
shop. It is terrible because
people urinate on the wall
which is bad for our
customers. We have tried to
put up “no loitering” signs and
so far that has helped. We
have donated no parking signs
This is something our
taxis that park on the street
during the day. They make it
hard to keep the space clean,
but we try our best. I have
seen other businesses near our
I am proud to be a
Queenstonian and I feel that
every business can bring a
different aspect and outlook to
this initiative. We grew up here
and have had a business for 25
years and this is home. We
have started with cleaning our
section of the business area
and are planning to put in
some plants and put out
recycling bins and also try to
get local schools involved.

State of Komani a crying shame
Azikiwe Xashimba of Komani
writes: It is a shame to see our
once-beautiful town
deteriorating like this. Komani
used to be one of the cleanest
and most beautiful towns in the
Eastern Cape.
The ANC is deploying people
who do not have a love for this
historical town in strategic
positions and who are not
citizens of Komani.
These people are busy with
easy money and corruption and
they don’t care about the
citizens and how they fe e l .
The traffic lights near
Unfair stain on reputation
The Rep reporter Abongile Solundwana writes: It
is amazing the levels some people are willing to
stoop to cover up the mess they deliberately got
themselves into, like the owner of OTJ Laundry who
failed to look after the Komani Hospital patients’
clothing and linen (The Rep, February 22) and who
claimed I received a R500 bribe to publish the story.
The report described the piles of laundry, some of
it lying on the ground outside, which had been there
for years and had been damaged as a result.
There was also mention of the abuse of her
employees, most of whom were not registered, and
some of whom had not been fully paid.
However, she forgot to mention that the report
was backed up with factual, concrete evidence by
way of a video and pictures plus photos from the
previous report which The Rep reporters took in
2012.
This is a shame, because instead of dealing with
the serious disservice she has done in our
community, all she could come up with was that I
received a bribe.
As a journalist and a tax-paying citizen it is my
responsibility to call to account those who believe
they are above the law and may do whatever they
like at the expense of public servants’ m o n e y.
The Rep did not defend itself, but we allowed the
public to be the jury.
This reflects that it is not the people who get the
tenders who are at fault, but those who are given
the power to allocate the tenders.
The moral of the story is: No matter what we do,
the truth always comes out in the end.
St rauss’s have not been working
for five years. It is even worse
now that the traffic lights near
the post office have not been
operating for almost a month.
The town is dirty, there are no
proper drainage systems, no
streetlights, trees are not
pruned, potholes on almost
every street, etc.
This is an embarrassment by
the ANC government. The
current government
amalgamated Lukhanji with
Tsolwana and Nkwanca. In those
two areas, they are not paying
services. In Ezibeleni, workers of
CHDM do not go house to house
to read water meters. They
estimate and citizens must just
pay. Services are only paid in
Whittlesea, Komani, Ezibeleni
and Mlungisi.
This is unfair to residents of
these areas. The communities
must come together and form a
committee (black and white)
which will deal directly with
EMLM.
I am also concerned about the
taxi rank which has been built
more than eight years ago for
millions, but has not been
finished and is not operating.
Notice is hereby given in terms of Section 49(1) (a) (i) of the Local Government
Wheelchair initiative develops traction
CHUX FOURIE
So often we are asked to
help with this or
contribute to that, but we
seldom hear what the
result of our involvement was or
how the particular project is
progressing.
The Rep carried a story some
time ago about how the
Sweethearts Foundation,
situated in Johannesburg, who
was running a wheelchair
project. A wheelchair would be
donated to a needy recipient
once 450kg of plastic bottle tops
or 50kg of bread tags were
collected.
Arrangements were made with
Pick n Pay at The Mall to utilise
their cigarette counter as a
collection point and people were
asked to hand in their plastic
items there. And they did . . . in
addition to many individual
members of the public, schools
Tuesday March 5: Triangular athletics
Thursday-Sunday March 7-10: Ryla camp.
handed in a spectacular number
of boxes full of plastic items.
As their contribution to the
drive, a courier company fetches
the items and transports them to
Johannesburg.
All this is still ongoing and it
was very gratifying to hear that
one of our own, Angi Wienekus,
who grew up in Komani, and
who was educated at Balmoral
and GHS and later taught there,
became the beneficiary of a
wheelchair in East London last
week.
The hand-over function was
championed by PNA Stationers
at their admin centre and they
provided the refreshments for
the function and a wonderful,
thoughtful goodie bag each for
Wienekus’s children, Hannah, 10,
and Alex, 6.
A Komani woman, Kiasha
a very prestigious achievement
is invited.
Kiasha, is a social
entrepreneur and deputy director
of training and evaluation at
passion for empowering people
and is determined to bring
She has spent many years
working in early childhood
This is no ordinary wheelchair
– it is custom-designed
especially for Wienekus by the
people at the oncology unit at
Frere Hospital according to her
height, weight and needs and is
made to be as comfortable as
possible, so that even the
backrest can be made at just the
right angle to suit her.
To date, 13 wheelchairs have
been donated in the East London
region and they try to give one
away every month.
Wienekus’ father, Bennie, told
The Rep, “We will never know
how to adequately thank
everyone. Words can’t express
our gratitude.”
In spite of her illness,
Wienekus has a scheme to help
hospice and appeals to anyone
who might have second-hand
books, clothing or household
items in good condition to
donate them so that funds may
be raised to help worthy causes.
going through to the final round
of the application process, but
now she has to raise the funds
for her flights, accommodation in
Tokyo and so on. This is seen as
preparation for the challenges
the candidates will experience.
The total cost required is
R155,000, but with the support of
her family, friends and the
community, Kiasha is convinced
her dream will come true.
Those who wish to support her
groceries and clothing items.
Parish leader Nobuzwe
programme adopted by the
M ot h e r s ’ Union and is
facilitated once a term.
“We have five unit
committees focusing on action
and outreach, prayer and
spirituality, marketing and
human resources and our main
priorities include gender-based
violence programmes, mental
health and education. We host
three activities a year, including
family stability programmes in
church and in 2018, we visited
an old age home where we
assisted with donations.”
The donation included
sanitary towels and stationery
and Lubobo indicated they had
identified the facility after
hearing they were not receiving
any funding.
“We want to promote
favourable conditions in
society, stability and the
protection of children. As a
m ot h e r s ’ union we each
contribute whatever we have
with the help of some local
businesses. The centre is
struggling. They have to take
from their own pockets to
sustain the place. Most of the
children there come from
disadvantaged backgrounds
and the mission is to not only
pray in church buildings, but to
go out there and assist in
whatever way we can. We want
to show these children that we
are here and we care. We also
invited parents to show they
were not alone and that we are
here as churches to lend a
helping hand because a church
is a place of healing.
Lubobo said the next
programme would be on
education when they are hoping
to invite different departments
for an information-sharing
session.
Organiser of the event
Political prisoners’ stories
and histories documented
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Kgethi Images has been
commissioned to conduct and
produce life histories from oral
interviews with 100 ex-political
prisoners (EPP) of Robben
Island from the 1960s who
originate from the Chris Hani
District Municipality areas,
Kgethi Images multi media
production director and founder
Lekgetho Makola said.
“In instances where an
individual EPP has passed on,
interviews are conducted with
their immediate family members
on their memories of the
individual EPP. The project will
last for five months ending in
May 2019.
“This activity is part of a
national project of the Robben
Island museum in collecting and
preserving the stories of Robben
Island political prisoners for our
heritage and prosperity.”
Cinematographer Jonga
Dedezane said he and seven of
his team had been given a list of
people with whom to document
inter views.
“We have documented more
than 25 ex-prisoners so far. We
have been to places like
Ezibeleni, Ilinge, Cala,
Cofimvaba and Cacadu and it
has been great the way people
have been willing to share their
stories with us.”
Another team member, Thasky
Fatyi, said, “The interviews have
been exciting, touching and
painful at the same time. Some
of the things the former
prisoners said were quite
UNTOLD STORIES: Twelve Silimeni is one of the ex-Robben Island prisoners whose story was
documented, along with his wife, Noluvuyo, in Bengu Village at Cacadu Picture: SUPPLIED
shocking and traumatising.”
This, he said, made the
prisoners enjoy travelling this
j o u r n e y.
“We came to revive the notion
of unsung heroes who need to
be remembered, known and
archived so that the upcoming
generations and their families
should know that their
forefathers were a part of those
who fought in the struggle.”
Fatyi said the Robben Island
stories which are told
repetitively were based on who
was in the political forefront.
“There are a number of people
who spent many years on
Robben Island like Mpolose
Mangqangwana who spent 20
years in the prison but you will
not find people like him in the
history books of our country,
which is quite unfair.”
EPP Lennox Mhuthuzeli
Gudlundlu from Madeira Park
who was part of the Poqo (PAC)
underground movement, said, “I
spent eight years on Robben
Island after I was charged with
an alleged sabotage in 1962.
“I am happy about this
initiative because these st o r i e s
are not known in societ y.
“Pivotal events often die
before we are able to capture
and archive them. This is why I
was willing to share the journey
I experienced during the
struggle while fighting for
freedom.
“Most people did not take our
struggle seriously at that time.
They did not foresee the
democratic SA it would bring
about.’’

Handy tips to prepare for what lies ahead
ith the excitement of
Wfinding and securing a
property that meets all your
search criteria, it can be easy
to forget just how stressful
the actual moving process
can be.
While the end result of
being comfortably settled
into a new home makes
going through this trouble
worthwhile, it can be helpful
to take a moment to prepare
yourself for what lies ahead.
“As exciting as it is,
moving home is not all fun
and games.
“If it’s been a while since
you have last experienced a
move, it might be helpful to
speak to an estate agent to
get a better idea of the kind
of things you should plan
fo r, ” advised RE/MAX of
homeowners should brace
Packing takes longer
than you think: The worst
mistake homeowners can
make is to underestimate
how much time it takes to
pack.
Depending on the size of
the home,
homeowners
should start
packing anywhere
from a week to a
month ahead of
the move.
To keep track of
where you’ve
stored your items, number
each box and keep an
inventory list of what can be
found inside each one.
Yo u ’ve accumulated more
than you realise: Especially
for those who have been in
their current home for more
than five years, it is often
astonishing how much can
be accumulated.
Make sure you give
yourself enough time to sort
through all the rooms in your
home and donate, dump, or
sell the items that you no
longer need.
There is more admin than
you think: “One tends to
forget that one’s address will
Sort through all the rooms
and donate, dump, or sell the
items that you no longer need
need to be updated with all
of your account holders.
While most institutions
allow you to update these
details online these days,
some might still insist that
you bring along a hard copy
of a proof of residence before
they will update your details.
“It might be a good idea to
take a few days’ leave after
the move to sort out all the
necessary admin,” said
Goslet t.
The result is worth the
effor t: “While going through
the process of moving, many
promise themselves never to
go through the trouble again.
However, as time passes,
one’s needs change
and the home that
was once perfect,
soon becomes
restrictive and
unpleasant to live in.
“As stressful as
moving can be,
nothing beats the
feeling of being settled into a
new home that suits all your
lifestyle needs.
“Homeowners should never
let the somewhat daunting
process of moving deter
them from getting in touch
with a real estate
professional who can help
them take the bold step of
This past Valentine’s Day, the RE/MAX of
Southern Africa network spread their love
across the region as part of a national Show
Your Love campaign.
The idea behind the campaign was to
encourage the network to give back to the local
communities they serve in some small way.
“The campaign was a great success that saw
RE/MAX associates across the country roll up
their sleeves to get behind some or other worthy
community cause,” explains Regional Director and
CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, Adrian
Goslet t.
As an example of the kinds of activities the
network got involved in on the day, RE/MAX
Dazzle repainted Casa Caritas, a home for the
disabled in Kempton Park. The office also made a
cash donation along with some towels and
groceries for the home.
Similarly, RE/MAX Excellence visited the Frank
Mynhardt Old Age Home in Brakpan and spent
time with the residents, giving out a few free
manicures as well as some gift bags with
toiletries to the less fortunate residents within the
home.
Other offices chose to take a sweeter route.
RE/MAX Koepel, for example, baked cupcakes
and handed them out at Sally Martin Park
Retirement Village in Parys. RE/MAX Jowic in
Centurion held a cupcake sale at their office to
raise funds for International Childhood Cancer
Awareness day, held 15 February each year.
Several offices also chose to hand out chocolates
and other freebies at local traffic intersections
and schools.
Choosing to show some love to the animals
within the community, RE/MAX Property
Associates Table View office went to SANCCOB to
assist with the daily tasks of looking after the
birds, such as making food, cleaning out syringes,
washing down pen carpets and making pens for
baby flamingos. In the spirit of the day, Gerlinde
Moser, Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Living, went so
far as to adopt a pair of Africa Penguins through
SANCCOB in the name of RE/MAX of Southern
Africa’s Regional Owners, Adrian & Vicky Goslett
– who also got their hands dirty alongside their
Regional Office Support staff with a clean-up of
Muizenberg Beach on the day.
“While we thank our network for getting behind
this campaign by giving back to their local
communities on the day, we also acknowledge
that many of our offices choose to show their love
throughout the year as well. We thank all within
the RE/MAX network for their continued
commitment to community-focused service and
encourage them to keep on giving back to their
suburbs in any way they can,” Goslett concludes.
INFORMATIVE SESSION: Service providers gathered at the Thobi Kula
Indoor Sport Centre for the Chris Hani District Municipality suppliers’ day
Picture: ZINTLE BOBELO
CHDM hosts
suppliers’ day
ZINTLE BOBELO
Chris Hani District Municipality held a
suppliers’ day for district service
providers at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sport
Centre on Monday
Finance portfolio head Mthethunzima
Jack said the aim was to share
information with service providers to
improve working relations.
“The aim is to be timeously proactive
in providing necessary information. To
show transparency, empower and ensure
that the issue of poverty and
unemployment is addressed. Service
providers are one of our main
stakeholders working closely with us to
develop the district as a whole.”
Business development manager Ngoni
Katsere made a presentation on the
SMME funding model and the criteria
they use to evaluate and assess
a p p l i c at i o n s .
“Those criteria are in place and are
guided by a funding model that was
approved by council in 2017. The second
part focused on the contractor
development policy which was recently
adopted by council and seeks to provide
opportunities for contractors, but also to
ensure that they are able to improve
their grading and status and tender for
bigger projects.
“We have a training programme which
is split into two parts that targets grade
three to six and the second one targets
one and two.”
Katsere said the first important criteria
they focused on before providing funding
was the viability of the business.
“More than that, we want to look at
how many jobs and the impact it has
created. Chris Hani district is a
predominately rural one and has a high
unemployment rate, so any business
that seeks funding, needs to make some
level of intervention or impact in terms
of addressing some of those challenges.
“The process requires an assessment
and verification. We don’t just look at the
business plan and the proposal. We visit
business premises where we verify and
interrogate. The final recommendation
sent to the committee is based on the
verification done in that business.”
Issues raised from the floor by service
providers included transparency, the
verification of locality and outsourcing,
especially in the division of construction.
“It is a challenge that we have
identified, but obviously the main
contractors have a preference. The intent
of this contractor development policy in
terms of sub-contracting, is for a
business that needs to sub-contract to
identify sub-contractors in the
programme.
“Secondly, we want to encourage all
contractors to procure locally, but what
is important is that those who are
supplying, comply with the relevant
quality requirements,” added Katsere.
Senior environmental health
practitioner Ncumisa Qolo said her
presentation was around the legislation
framework for food control.
“I gave out the current regulation from
the foodstuffs, cosmetics and
disinfectants act which stipulates that
everyone handling food, needs to have a
certificate of acceptability. The purpose
of the regulation is to govern general
hygiene requirements for food premises
and transportation of food.”
Qolo said the certificate was issued
once the premises had been certified to
comply. The new application prices for
certificates is R283.63 and the renewal
is R113.45 and to replace lost certificates,
businesses paid R113.45 for reprint.”
Mkhanyiseli Tyali from Engcobo, who
owns a construction company, said
issues were addressed but there were
still gaps.
“I noticed that there are gaps in the
contractor development policy because
some of the challenges faced by SMMEs
are caused by the municipality itself
using white-owned companies. The
reality is that there is a technical
exclusion of black SMMEs.
“For instance, when there’s an advert
requesting the hire of plant less than
two years old, the reality is that there is
no black person who has such
equipment in the district. If black-owned
SMMEs want to purchase equipment,
the first thing they do is go to an auction
where they buy used plant,” said Tyali.
at the Mlungisi Stadium.
Old Collegians suffered a 27-14 defeat at
the hands of EUR Africans in Aliwal North.
The defeat was Breakers’ fourth in the
lucrative Eastern Cape Super 12
foot of Group B and out of contention for
s i l v e r wa r e .
Breakers are left with one match, also at
home, against Progress from Uitenhage
and chances for a first-ever win are very
slim.
In other results, PE Police embarrassed
a hapless Buffaloes side 60-0 to send a
clear warning to the other teams in Group
A of their intentions of a knock-out berth.
Progress beat Berlin Tigers 36-10 to
of matches left. Progress, together with
MAXWELL LEVINE
All roads will lead to the
Thobi Kula Indoor Sports
Centre tomorrow when
Komani rugby followers
will be treated to a double
header as both Old
Collegians and Breakers
will be in action at the
same venue.
This will be a rugby
bonanza as the two
biggest teams in Komani
with arguably the most
supporters will give their
spectators double the
pleasure. This does not
happen often as the fierce
cross-town rivals normally
use different fields for
their matches.
The day will kick off
with Old Collegians taking
on Hibernians from
Burgersdorp at 2.30pm.
Matches between the two
teams are always exciting
with Hibernians having an
edge over the local side.
Old Collegians have been
in a rebuilding phase and
the youngsters coming
through are gelling well
with the experienced
players. Exchanges are
expected to be brutal with
both teams likely to throw
the ball wide.
Hibernians’ backline is
lightning fast with Apie
Flitoor their go-to man.
They have the strike force
in all departments at the
back and Collegians must
be at their best.
Zebbe Nkomati is
dangerous when
unattended and can
cause havoc to any side.
OC can call on Neville
Olivier, Craig Pijoos and
Darren Williams to spark
the magic. The return of
Larry Blignaut and Conrad
Tromp to stabilise the
midfield will be crucial.
Up front Romaine
Flusk, Spek Douw,
Sesethu Time and Colin
Kemp must pull out all
the stops to set the home
team on the front foot.
This will be an epic clash.
Up next, will be the EC
Super 12 clash between
local side Breakers and
Progress from Uitenhage
at 4 pm. Breakers will go
out with only pride at
stake. It will be a
momentous task as
Progress is one of the
best sides in the entire
province. Progress played
Gold Cup and were EP
champs last season and
have reached the final of
the competition on three
occasions. Breakers will
have their work cut out for
the entire 80 minutes.
The local side can call
on the likes of Thabo
Sokwebe, Lali Maso,
Nkunku Mbuso, Thulani
Renqu, Phumlani
Matshoba and many more
of their star players to
stand up and be counted.
Progress are ruthless and
can tear any team apart
as shown last weekend
when they thrashed Berlin
Tigers 36-10 in Berlin. To
make matters worse
Progress are unbeaten
and Breakers winless.
Although the away team,
Progress will enter the
match as clear favourites.
In a pre-season friendly, Old Collegians
travelled to Aliwal North to lock horns with
EUR Africans. The Komani side came off
second-best as Africans used all their
home ground advantage to inflict a first
defeat for the Komani side this season.

New basketball squad play to impress
ANDISA BONANI
Queen’s College took on Port
Elizabeth-based Grey High School
in a series of basketball games in
preparation for the upcoming
provincial basketball festival to
take place in Makhanda in March.
Queen’s introduced basketball
to the school in 2019 and the
teams, which range from under-14
to U18, played against an already
established basketball squad
from Grey.
The two schools played eight
games in total and only the
Queen’s U15 team managed to
win against the experienced Grey
with 23-14.
Queen’s master of basket
Wilbert Gumunyu said the boys’
game improved with every match
they played which was very
encouraging for him and the
coaches.
“We are trying to get the boys
to play against other teams as
much as possible so they see
how experienced teams play. All
our teams are new with no
experienced players which is
quite impressive for the kind of
game they play for newbies. The
more games we play against
other schools, the better we will
become.”
Queen’s recently travelled to
Jonannesburg where they played
games against Red Hill, Geppe,
Pretoria Boys, Usuthu, Kearsney
College and Zimbabwe-based St
George’s High School, to name
but a few.
Grade 9 pupil Akhanyile
Mgijima, 15, who played the point
guard position, was one of the
players who played an impressive
game.
Gumunyu indicated Mgijima
also played for the first team as a
substitute which spoke to the
hard work he put into his game.
“For a young boy to also play in
the first team says a lot about
him as a player. We want to
ensure that all players reach their
ultimate potential, so we do not
box them in according to their
age. All the boys in the teams did
extremely well. Without teamwork
we would not have played such a
good game as we did.”
Grey coach Mfundo
Ngangamsha said the games
were more like a practice session
for both schools in preparation for
the provincial festival.
“Basketball is not new for us at
Grey, so we were not surprised
that we won most of the games
against Queen’s.
“They played a very good game
for a school that only recently
introduced the sport. In a few
months’ time they might cause
challenges for us but we I trust
my boys to always be on top of
their opponents.
“We are looking forward to the
upcoming basketball festival, and
want to play as many games with
other schools as we can to be fit
and ready,” Ngangamsha said.
SECOND BITE: Van Coller Primary School pupil
Luvolwethu Tabata, 12, will represent the
school in the U13 Discus for the Eastern Cape
Schools Athletics to be held in Cradock today.
Tabata had represented the school in the
district athletics and achieved the highest
distance of 26 and 45 meters. This is not the
first time he will be participating in provincial
games, last year Tabata came second in
provincial games which deterred him from
qualifying for the national games
Brody triumphant
after tough course
SEAN HEIDEMANN
Last Saturday was an individual Stableford. The
course was playing quite tough with some dense
semi-rough and rough to deal with if you went
off line.
The winner on the day was Chantelle Brody on
a very well played 40 points. Second was Sean
Heidemann on 39, third Danie Nel on 37 and
fourth was Stefan Cloete on 36 points, winning
the count out.
There was only one two club, achieved by
Sanet Pieterse on the 16th.
This Sunday, March 3, is the Queenstown
Ladies’ Open. There is usually a full field with
numerous out-of-town golfers making the trip to
Queenstown Golf Club to participate.
The course will be closed for casual golf until
around lunch time. Good luck to all the
Queenstown women who are entering.
The Chris Hani District
Municipality (CHDM) soccer
and netball teams participated
in the annual municipal sports
tournament on Saturday at the
Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Centre.
This event was started by Joe
Gqabi District Municipality in
2018.
This year only four teams
were involved, including Joe
Gqabi, Mnquma, CHDM and
Senqu local municipalities,
when teams went head-to-head
to be crowned winners of the
tournament.
CHDM sports co-ordinator
Thobile Feni said CHDM hosted
the tournament for the second
time this year and that Mnquma
would host the next one in
April.
In soccer, Mnquma won the
tournament by 3-1, beating Joe
Gqabi in the final match in a
penalty shoot out. The second
spot went to Joe Gqabi and
third to CHDM.
ANDISA BONANI
A total of 20 schools from the Enoch
Mgijima region participated in the KFC
Mini Cricket festival at Queen’s Junior
on Friday, and the U13 T10 knockout
tournament that took place at the
Dumpy Adams Sports Complex on
S at u r d ay.
At Queen’s – the Dordrecht,
Tarkastad, Whittlesea and Ezibeleni
areas, among others – played more than
40 matches in which 334 children
par ticipated.
The U13 T10 tournament saw Aliwal
North, Dordrecht, Mthwalenga and
Bongolwethu from Whittlesea, Unathi
Mkefa from Ezibeleni, Louis Rex and St
Theresa’s Primary Schools from Komani
par ticipate.
All the teams brought their A-game as
they tried to steer away from being
eliminated by winning most of their
teamwork and a healthy
“Through sport we aim to
Weekend cricket a great success
lost the opening game after Aliwal North
won the toss and elected to bat first in a
15-over match. Aliwal North made a solid
start when their openers took the score
to 62 in nine overs and Logan
Geldenhuys (34) was bowled out by
Ruan King of Louis Rex.
This was largely thanks to Jade
Geldenhuys who went out third with 28
in 23 balls and made the bowlers work
hard throughout the innings.
The Louis Rex batsmen went
enthusiastically about their task to
chase down the score and this was
helped along by important contributions
from the opening pair, but they lost one
of their batsmen for 18 after the first
p o w e r p l ay.
It was King, with 26, and his partner,
who scored 36, who made the
second-highest partnership and they
develop character, self
confidence, sportsmanship and
discipline in our district and
other municipalities in the
province.
“In the coming tournament
won the game by nine wickets with three
balls to spare.
Players who stood out in the
tournament, were: top runner –
Geldenhuys; top wicket-taker – King;
best catch of the tournament –
Ayabulela Mjaba of Get Ahead; youngest
player – Sachin Cornelius; team of the
municipalities do not have
teams for all the sporting codes
we want to include.”
“FC mini cricket is the first step in
