Vision for the future
Making France’s Nouvelle-
Aquitaine a “Not to be Missed”
part of any travel itinerary
When considering the fact that France
continues to prance as the most
favourite tourist destination in the
world, the question is often asked,
“Why so?”
It’s true that travelling the world, one
can often see some amazing places,
with wonderful people, cultures and
cuisines. But France has that little
“je ne sais quoi”, that makes it an
incredible magnet for tourists. That
something is its extraordinary variety
– in every sense, making it more like a
collection of countries or destinations
than a single destination. Nouvelle-
Aquitaine is the epitome of this
phenomenon, itself hosting a plethora
of landscapes, peoples, cuisines,
activities and cultures that is so broad
that it is difficult to capture in one
single work such as this one.
Added to this is the fact that for many
international tourists, the region is yet
to be discovered. And that needs to
change!
For travel professionals from around
the globe, the advantages of choosing
Nouvelle-Aquitaine as a “not to be
missed” part of a French or European
itinerary are multiple, and their clients
– young or old, or from any walk of
life – will come back with smiles, and
recollections of an extraordinary time,
indelibly etched into their memories.
The background of Michel Durrieu,
the General Director of the Regional
Tourist Board of Nouvelle-Aquitaine,
having worked in the French Ministry
or Foreign Affairs (among other
postings) has given him a broader
vision of the industry at large; one
which is strongly motivating the
active promotion of this region, as he
realises just how “undersold” it has
been until this day.
The goals of the Regional Tourist
Board are thus more than realistic, and
we hope that this SMARTguide will
enable the savvy travel professional
to learn one or two useful, valuable
and pertinent facts about the region,
and to partake in the propulsion of
Nouvelle-Aquitaine to the highest
ranks of the French and European
tourism scene.
INTRODUCTION
Targeting the top step of
the sustainable tourism podium
The vision of Michel Durrieu – General Director,
Regional Tourism Board, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
With the quality of accommodation in Nouvelle-Aquitaine constantly on the rise, it is no surprise that the
regional authority’s ambition is to make Nouvelle-Aquitaine the most attractive region to visit in France.
Michel Durrieu explains the current place of tourism in the region.
Our objective is to become the N°1
sustainable destination in France
and Europe. Of all the French regions,
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the #1 holiday
destination for French people and is
approaching the leading trio for foreign
visitors. Nearly 28 million tourists visited
the area in 2017. Arrivals of foreign
visitors by air are up 40% over the past
five years, and with the high speed train
(LGV), meaning Poitiers is just one hour
from Paris, and Bordeaux just 2 hours
from the capital, visitor numbers are
rising exponentially. With our famous
world brands such as Bordeaux, the
Dordogne Valley, Biarritz Pays Basque,
the Pyrenees, the Atlantic Coast and
Cognac, the region aims to attract an
increasing number of tourists who are
fond of authenticity, French “art de
vivre”, gastronomy, culture, breath-taking
natural landscapes and innovative and
unique experiences.
What are your short to medium term
goals?
Nouvelle-Aquitaine has all the assets
to be an unmissable destination of
international tourism. The objective is
also to position the region on the podium
of French destinations for international
tourists, just behind Paris and the
Provence - Côte d’Azur. The bar of 30
million tourists will soon be exceeded, but
an increase in number is not the goal. It
is most important to look at the incomes
and jobs created and be respectful of the
environment and the people. Exceeding
€18bn revenue and more than 140,000
jobs by 2020 seems realistic.
After working in the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, you have a “different take” on the
promotion of regional tourism…
This experience has been very helpful
in developing my understanding of the
global issues related to the development
of this sector of activity in terms of
value creation as well as jobs. My seat
as Permanent Representative of France
in the UNWTO has also allowed me to
foster a great number of connections.
I now intend to leverage this network
of contacts in the service of Nouvelle-
Aquitaine to raise awareness about the
exceptional richness of its destinations.
It’s a big challenge! Larger than Austria
and more populous than Denmark, the
region has the means of its ambitions:
to become the unavoidable destination
when it comes to French art de vivre,
a destination of authenticity and
unprecedented experiences, and THE
destination for innovative, sustainable
and resolutely forward-looking tourism.
TRADE TALK
Harry Dalgaard
President, Avanti Destinations,
The introduction of the TGV Oceane has
been major breakthrough in connecting
our number one destination, Paris with
Bordeaux. Whether it’s simply for a day
excursion to Bordeaux or instead the
start of a multi-destination itinerary, the
shorter travel time has been a huge boon.
As in other destinations where high speed
rail has been introduced, the incentive for
the traveller to explore has increased the
destinations appeal.
Our travellers are time poor and typically
travel to three or four destinations in either
the same country or multi-country in a
10-14 day period. With the two-hour travel
time from Paris, our numbers have grown
substantially in the short period since the
high-speed service was introduced last
July.
Secondly, the opening of La Cité du Vin in
Bordeaux has created a solid building block
to our wine and culinary programs, that
are now much sought after by our growing
millennial market. With this attraction, our
travellers can get a full wine experience in
town and the surrounding vineyards.
Southwestern France has always been
very popular with our clients, and the
new initiatives by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine
regional tourist board to harmonise and
boost promotion of the region will, I am sure, foster a much stronger
attraction for international visitors.
Indeed, we all know that the surf of Biarritz and the vineyards of
Bordeaux have strong pulling-power, but these, when combined with
all the other destinations and activities of the region, make it a “must
include” in any itinerary to Europe or France.
This is a people business, and it is good to see that the people in this
region are truly pulling together to create a tourism offering that is on
a par with any other region in the world, and the result will no doubt
be healthy growth for the industry in the region.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine is increasingly
a region that we recommend for people
to visit before crossing France off their
bucket list. More and more flights to
Bordeaux are coming on line, so that
it is becoming much easier to reach
this truly remarkable region of France.
From the big wine regions, to the
coastline with its unique sand dunes
and also in the backcountry, the true
old French tradition still exists. Either
if one is looking for surfing, golfing,
culture, gourmet, cycling or hiking
– I believe Nouvelle-Aquitaine has
something for everybody – especially in
the summertime.
It’s good news for a tour operator or airline to
offer its customers a region that so fittingly
reflects the distinctive side of what it has to
offer. The initiatives developed by Nouvelle-
Aquitaine to better inform travellers about its cities and leading subregions,
as well as its signature experiences, are just as helpful to
better present and sell a destination.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region has been among the destinations served
by Air Transat for more than 20 years, including flights to Bordeaux from
Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver. And in 2018, Canadian carrier Air
Transat added additional flights to Bordeaux from Montreal throughout
the summer, with three more flights per week.
SUSTAINABLE
TOURISM
DESTINATION
IN FRANCE
The regional masterplan for
the development of tourism
and leisure in Nouvelle-
Aquitaine aims to ensure the
preservation of natural and
heritage resources. These
constitute the basis of the
region’s attractiveness for
tourists, accompanying its
competitiveness and the
transformation of businesses
in the tourism sector – in
particular through innovation
– promoting balanced regional
development.
Director of Marketing,
Logitravel, Spain
Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a region that always arouses
the interest of the Spanish public, thanks to the
beauty of its towns, its historical and cultural
heritage and, among others, its gastronomy and
wines. Recently, some improvements have been
made to the tourist development of the destination,
making it even more attractive for tourists seeking
to live unforgettable experiences.
Logitravel, aware of its potential in the European
market, will carry out a complete promotional
campaign, including actions in television and the
launch of new route packages by car, the best
option to discover a place, since it adapts to the
needs of each traveller.
These proposals will be available in a new
exclusive website about Nouvelle-Aquitaine, which
will also collect information on the essential
visits. Likewise, in the new store Logitravel Store
– in Kinépolis – events will be held to bring the
attractions of the region closer to the public,
promising tourist perspectives.
The regional plan proposes
actions to strengthen the
leadership of Nouvelle-
Aquitaine and anticipate
change, preserving natural
heritage and the quality of
life, while ensuring they
benefit the entire territory and
address the new expectations
of visitors. New challenges
include: organising the
welcoming of tourists in
natural sites, promoting the
eco-responsibility of local
companies, highlighting
tourism professions,
structuring supply and
channels, and organising
marketing, promoting
the territories and tourist
destinations.
Vision for the future
Creation of value… and jobs
“In 2020, Nouvelle-Aquitaine will
be not only the biggest region, but
also the number one sustainable
tourist destination”
The figures speak for themselves.
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region is the:
• The biggest region in France –
84,000 sq km
• #1 agricultural region in Europe
• #3 economic region in France,
with €158bn turnover at last count
• #2 aeronautical region in France
• #1 region for forested lands, with
2.8m Ha of forests
• 5.8 million inhabitants in 12
departments
OBJECTIVES FOR 2020
• to remain the #1 destination for French
tourists (up to 25m)
• to become the #3 French destination for
international tourists (+30% over 2016)
• overall 30 million tourists
• €18bn in tourism revenues (+20% over 2016)
• 140,000 jobs (+27% over 2016)
With 14 UNESCO world heritage sites,
and 28 of the “most beautiful French
villages”, along with an incredible 720 km
of coastline, Nouvelle-Aquitaine will be
targeting local and global outbound
tourism markets in order to achieve its
ambitious goals.
To achieve the projected targets, the
capacity and quality of the region’s
hospitality offering is increased in line
with improved air, road and rail links, and
new, exciting promotional and branding
campaigns are organised by the Regional
Tourism Board in order to foster interest
among potential travellers.
promotion of the region.
At the same time, a new social network
strategy has been developed: “listen/
analyse/influence” – leveraging renowned
players. The website along with a strategy
of e-reputation, are structured around
strong brands, with a campaign of
be distinguished by the UNESCO with
such a vast and complex boundary. Its
classic and neo-classic architecture has
seen barely and stylistic change for over
two centuries and the city has over 350
buildings classified or listed as historic
monuments. And when it comes to wine,
names like Margaux, Saint-Estèphe,
Pomerol, Pauillac, Saint-Emilion, and
Côtes de Blaye set the taste buds dancing.
The visit starts in the “Cité du Vin” or in the
“Aquitaine Museum”!
Dordogne Valley and Périgord
The Dordogne area is a land of many
assets: from gastronomy (foie gras,
truffles, etc.) to historical heritage (from
the Lascaux caves to medieval villages
and castles - Beynac, Castelnaud, Sarlat
etc.) - but also of outdoor activities such
as canoeing, golf, cycling, and fishing.
As part of the Man and Biodiversity
project, the Dordogne Valley was named
a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2012,
the entire watershed sheltering great
biodiversity and containing one of the
biggest estuaries in Europe.
Atlantic Coast
From Marais-Poitevin to Pays-Basque
via La Rochelle-Ile de Ré, Arcachon, the
Landes this is the kingdom of water
sports, cycling paths and lively seaside
resorts. Visitors are always taken aback by
the Atlantic Coast’s unforgettable beaches
and panoramas.
Biarritz - Pays Basque
Two strong identities, the Pays Basque
(on the Atlantic side) and small villages
(inland), and an offering combining the
countryside, the Pyrenees mountains
and the seaside. It’s easy to discover an
exceptional natural and cultural heritage
and to enjoy gastronomy with a wealth of
products. From Hendaye to Anglet, not to
mention Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz,
lovers of surfing and water sports will take
advantage of numerous great locations.
Cognac Country
In Cognac, town and eau-de-vie are
one. So, a stay in Cognac would not
be complete without a visit to a grand
spirit merchant to learn the secrets of
distillation or discover the ageing cellars
and the “Paradis”, the cellar where the
oldest eaux-de-vie are jealously kept.
Pyrénées, Pau Béarn
Pau enjoys a privileged situation that has
earned it the name of “the heart of the
Pyrenees”. In the city, the Boulevard des
Pyrénées is one of the favourite spots
among locals: facing due south, they
settle on the terraces of the cafés in the
shade of the palm trees as soon as the
sun comes out and admire the Pyrenean
peaks.
Poitiers & Futuroscope
Futuroscope is one of France’s most
loved theme parks. In 2017, the park
celebrated its 30th anniversary. Visitors
won’t find roller-coasters or carrousels
at Futuroscope but dynamic cinemas,
gigantic screens, and even dancing with
robots. Meanwhile, Poitiers, also known
as “the city of 100 bell towers”, with its
2,000-year-old history and heritage, is a
marked contrast from Futuroscope.
Limoges - Vassivière -
Plateau de Millevaches
Limoges offers a wide range of cultural
and gastronomic discoveries. Thanks to
the porcelain that decorates the world’s
most prestigious tables, Limoges is
recognized as a “UNESCO creative city”.
To the north-west, on Plateau de
Millevaches park, Vassivière Lake offers you
an exceptional holiday area. Then discover
Aubusson and the “Cité internationale de la
tapisserie”, whose tapestry craft has been
placed on the UNESCO list for intangible
cultural heritage.
Niort - Marais Poitevin
Imagine a magical landscape of shady
cattle meadows crisscrossed by tranquil
waterways; a landscape of
pretty villages where bikes and boats are
traditional forms of transport and where
the locals work to the rhythm of the
seasons. Welcome to the Marais Poitevin
or “Green Venice”, a protected natural
area classified “Grand Site de France”
and regional Nature Park of the Marais
Destinations
Whether it’s culture, nature, adventure, fun, or
epicurean delights, it’s not only possible to find
something for everyone in this region – one is
somewhat overwhelmed by the choice.
In the following pages, we take
a closer look at the key internal
destinations that make up this
extraordinary patchwork that is
Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
We take you to the city of
Bordeaux and its famed wine
area along the Garonne. The
Dordogne welcomes visitors
with its wild nature and glorious
rural settings. Along the Atlantic
coast and in Biarritz-Pays Basque, the
endless sandy beaches and dunes welcome
lovers of surf and sun from around the globe.
The Cognac country is more than just home
to the famed eau-de-vie, but is also breath-taking in its
natural beauty. When it comes to heady heights, there are few
places to cap the Pyrenees. The ancient city of Poitiers and
the nearby Futuroscope complement each other through
their contrast. Want to try the best steak in France in the
finest French Porcelain? The Limoges area will not let you
down. And as a place to relax at the end of an epic journey, the
Marais Poitevin is just right.
Something for everyone? More than that – there’s plenty for
everyone.
BORDEAUX - BEST CITY 2017
Acclaimed for its vineyards, Bordeaux also
architecture, superb cuisine, and an
increasingly lively artistic and cultural scene.
Justly proud of the numerous attributes that
have earned it the title “Best City of 2017”,
Bordeaux stands as a dynamic symbol of the
French “art de vivre” (art of living).
BORDEAUX - NUMBER ONE IN LONELY
PLANET’S TOP CITIES OF THE WORLD
Bordeaux was the Lonely Planet guide’s top
city pick for 2017. The only French city in
the Top 10, Bordeaux faced down serious
competition from cities such as Cape Town,
Los Angeles and Lisbon.
10 TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNESCO
CLASSIFICATION
2017 marked ten years since Bordeaux
was registered on the list of UNESCO World
Heritage sites. 1,810 hectares, or nearly half
of the city’s total area are covered, making
Bordeaux the first urban environment of such
magnitude. Bordeaux has 350 buildings that
are classified as Historic Monuments. It is
also ten years since Vauban’s fortifications,
known as the “Bolt of the Estuary” (consisting
of the Blaye Citadel, Fort Pâté, and Fort
Médoc) and the vineyards of Saint Emilion
were granted World Heritage status. La Cité
Frugès housing development in Pessac,
designed by Le Corbusier, was added to the
list in the summer of 2016.
BORDEAUX, CITY OF THE ARTS
An inexhaustible source of inspiration,
Bordeaux is popular with artists and
hosts numerous arts-related projects.
It currently boasts one of the liveliest music
scenes in France, with urban, offbeat
locations springing up in the city’s various
neighbourhoods; street art adorns many
of Bordeaux’s walls, and generates an
increasing number of events and initiatives.
SPECIAL EXPERIENCES
AROUND BORDEAUX
There are a plethora of unique activities
available for visitors to the Bordeaux area.
The Bordeaux River Cruise offers a pass
that includes access to La Cité du Vin’s
permanent exhibition and a wine tasting
cruise on the Garonne.
Playing real-life escape games in century-old
wine cellars or in local vineyards is one of the
latest crazes in the region. Visitors are able
to explore in a new, fun way, while playing the
role of a sleuth or solving enigmas. A treasure
hunt might well result in the finder keeping a
bottle of rather delicious wine, and in all cases,
result in making new friends and discovering
the local fare.
Visitors can also choose to sleep in a wine
cask, an enormous barrel that can hold 7,000
litres at Saint-Jean-de-Blaignac (40 kms from
Bordeaux); or paraglide over the Arcachon
Bay, enjoying breathtaking views of the Dune
of Pilat and the Cap Ferret peninsula.
Bordeaux around Libourne and its vineyards
or Medoc Atlantique and its sandy beaches.
MUST-SEE
Biarritz,
a seaside town
Biarritz is the most urban of the
seaside resorts on the Basque
Coast. “Launched” in the 19 th
century by Empress Eugenie,
the town stands out with its
original architecture and its
casino. After the beach, head
to the boutiques, art galleries
and trendy bars! From the top
of the Rocher de la Vierge,
there is an unrestricted view
of the bay and its history, from
whalers to the “tonton surfers”.
© CRT NA
The history and culture of the Pays Basque
make it a bold and creative region. It
draws its inspiration from its heritage and
contrasts, between the ocean and mountain.
The preserved natural spaces of this region,
its charm, its character and its identity, make
it a small paradise which is known across the
world.
Visitors come here for its authentic and
cultural charm, between the heritage of
the old and contemporary creations. The
architectural and ethnographic heritage
is rich and diversified: houses, churches,
traditional festivities and games, music
and dance; many museums, including the
Museum of the Sea and the Cité de l’Océan,
enabling one and all to learn about the ocean
and its flora and fauna.
SUBTLE ELEGANCE AND A HARMONY
OF CONTRASTS
With a strong identity, the Pays Basque
has everything: the ocean, mountains,
countryside, renowned seaside resorts and
authentic villages.
A range of holidays are possible, such as
lazing on fine sandy beaches or exploring
the great outdoors of the Basque mountain,
or enjoying culinary experiences. The range
of possibilities is almost infinite, with one
common denominator: well-being.
THE ESSENCE OF THE PARTY
Visitors should come to the Pays Basque
and spend time celebrating. Tourists should
participate in at least once in a village festival
to feel all the love that the Basque region
brings with culture and history.
GOURMET PLEASURES
The Pays Basque is a gourmet paradise of
flavours and chefs. The Atlantic has spoiled
this little corner of the Bay of Biscay and the
interior of the country where the products of
the earth abound. From Bayonne to Saint-
Jean-de-Luz, there are numerous good
restaurants, with many Michelin starred
establishments.
OUTDOOR PURSUITS
Popular for more than 60 years is surfing
with the adventurous taking on 30km of
waves. From Anglet to Hendaye, you can
practice surfing and celebrate. In terms of
hiking, there are hundreds of trails across
the Pays Basque with a range of views. The
Pays Basque also has eight tailormade golf
courses.
WAVES AND FINE SAND
Anglet is known as ‘Little California’ for its 11
distinctive beaches spread over 4.5 km of fine
sand, from the cool cosmopolitan hang-out
of Marinella beach, via les Cavaliers, home to
the surfing pros, to the calm La Barre beach,
great for kids.
SPECIAL EXPERIENCES
The five-day Bayonne Festival sees a large
number of participants dressed in white
uniforms, red scarves and belts as they take
THE ATLANTIC COAST,
AN OCEAN OF ACTIVITIES!
Discover the Atlantic Coast’s
unforgettable beaches and panoramas
from Hendaye to Marais Poitevin. It is the
kingdom of water sports, cycling paths
and lively seaside resorts.
PAYS BASQUE, BETWEEN MOUNTAIN
AND SEA
In the south of the region, the Basque
coast meanders like a geographic marker
that separates the peaks of the Pyrenees
and the infinite horizon of the Atlantic.
Welcome to the paradise of surfers
and lovers of sea spray and Basque
gastronomy!
A little further north, the fine sandy dunes
stretch endlessly between the largest
softwood forest in Europe and the silvery
sheen of the ocean that gave the “Silver
Coast” its name.
THE LANDES, 100 KMS OF SANDY
BEACHES
Unspoilt beaches, lakes dotted along the
coast and the huge Landes de Gascogne
pine forest: a wonderful destination for
lovers of cycling, surfing, windsurfing,
sailing, golf and surf-casting (angling
in the ocean waves). The Landes holds
something special in store for every
season. In autumn, treat yourself to a visit
to Bas Armagnac to discover the secrets
of how this eau de vie (spirits) is distilled
and aged in oak. Also take time to visit
Mont-de-Marsan, “capital of the Landes”
and Gascon walled city, a peaceful town
dotted with many sculptures.
ARCACHON BAY, A LAGOON-LIKE
INLAND SEA
Between the large lakes of the Landes
and Médoc, Arcachon Bay is a 1,500
hectare bay supplied with water from the
ocean and from many waterways.
An inland sea whose colours are
lagoon-like, bordered by a crown of fine
sand culminating at 104 metres: the
amazing Pilat Dune! Listed as a Natural
Marine Park since 2014, Arcachon Bay
is renowned for its “island of birds” and
fishermen’s cabins built on stilts. There
are a number of charming seaside
resorts along the rim of this exceptional
site, including Arcachon, a city founded
in the 19 th century with the development
of “sea baths”, which at the time was
considered a new “therapeutic” fashion.
Still heading north, the Cordouan
lighthouse, the last remaining offshore
lighthouse still open to the public, guards
the entrance to the Gironde estuary.
PAU - PYRENEES (BEARN):
AN EPICUREAN DESTINATION
From the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean
sea, this region is focused on celebrating
nature, food and tradition. In Béarn Pyrénées,
young people lourish with their ideas,
while nature is superbly preserved. In the
background, the Pyrenees hypnotise, protect
and unite this territory.
A TERRITORY TO EXPLORE
Homeland of Gaston Fébus, the “Pyrenean sun
king”, the Pyrénées has a long history. Over
the centuries, many castles were built at Pau,
Morlanne and Montaner, the Moncade Tower,
the manor house of Laàs, the Legend Bridge in
Sauveterre de Béarn or the Portalet Fort! The
region features three valleys of character and
castles, dubbed “Cities and Countries of Art
and History”. The richness and the decoration
of the landscapes is unequivocal.
KNOW-HOW AND CREATIONS
For centuries, weavers settled at the edge of
the roads to make their famous creations that
have always inspired talent with innovative
ideas.
A GENEROUS TERRITORY
The Emblem of Béarn, the breed of béarnaise
cows is recognisable by its magnificent lyreshaped
horns and the elegance of its plain
wheat-coloured dress. Robust and with a
strong character, she narrowly escaped
extinction thanks to passionate breeders.
Every year, from June to September, shepherds
and herds live and celebrate transhumance in
the valleys of the Bearn Pyrénées. The variety
of the territory combined with such a wealth
of local produce attracts renowned chefs. In
the country of well-being at the Béarnaise,
many good tables from the simple “Assiette
de Pays” to the starry table passing through
the inns of villages and the tables of “Masters
restaurateurs”.
SNOW BUSINESS
When it comes to skiing in the Pyrénées,
Gourette is the trendiest, Artouste offers an
exceptional panorama in the Ossau valley
and seduces snowboarders and freestyle
enthusiasts. Pierre Saint Martin in Barétous
valley, is a superb environment, ideal for
families, beginners and adapted skiing.
Not to mention the nearby ski resorts of Val
d’Azun, Cauterets, Hautacam, or Luz-Ardiden.
EXPERIENCES
Fun route, riddles and unusual accommodation
in the trees of the park at Domaine and Château
de Laas. “Escape Castle”: in the park and its
theme gardens (bamboo rose garden), the
manor lends itself to a hectic adventure – 60
minutes and two scenarios to escape from two
mysterious rooms by solving puzzles.
An “Art and lights” urban stroll in the Hédas
district of Pau: a walk in the heart of the historic
city through scented gardens.
In Gan, the winery of Jurançon allows you to
discover the backstage of winemaking with a
guide who talks with passion about the course
of the grape, from the press room to the cellar,
aging through the fermentation tanks. Take part
in a wine tasting in Jurançon and Béarn.
RELIGIOUS TOURISM
On the Way of St James, hikers and pilgrims
converge towards the Pays Basque and the
Béarn before crossing the Pyrénées, from St-
Jean-Pied-de-Port, by the mythical Bentarte
and Somport passes before embarking on
the “Camino Frances”. A passage by Lourdes,
less than an hour’s drive from Pau, is also
conceivable.
Limoges station
LIMOGES, SKILLS AND
EXCELLENCE
Limoges offers a wide range
of cultural and gastronomic
encounters. Thanks to the porcelain
that decorates the world’s most
prestigious tables, Limoges is
recognised as a “UNESCO creative
city”. The heart of the city is well
worth a visit, especially the Boucherie
district, famous for its half-timbered
houses, quaint restaurants and
shops of yesteryear. Not far from
there, the Cité district is the site of
the easily recognisable Limougeauds
cathedral. Another architectural
curiosity is the Limoges station,
which, with its bell tower that stands
out like a lighthouse, is the city’s most
famous monument.
The Porcelain Routes is a network of
22 Limoges porcelain factories which
gathered together to represent and
promote the tradition of Limoges
porcelain (protected by a PGI-
Protected Geographical Indication).
La Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie
opened in 2016, in Aubusson. This
venue’s innovative layout enhances
the past and present of tapestry art,
which is now registered on UNESCO’s
Intangible Cultural Heritage List and
protected by a PGI.
In the footsteps of impressionist
painters – Claude Monet, Armand
Guillaumin and Francis Picabia,
among others – hundreds of artists
erected their easels in the valley of
painters, in the heart of a wild and
unspoilt nature. Travellers can do the
same by walking in their footsteps,
discovery book in hand, following the
Path of Painters, a short loop marked
with bookmarks honouring the work
of Claude Monet.
VASSIVIÈRE - PLATEAU
DE MILLEVACHES:
THE PROMISE OF
WONDERFUL DISCOVERIES
Vassivière lake’s fine sandy beaches and
recreational ports overflow with water activities,
from sailing to leisurely visits aboard cruise boats.
Enjoy majestic forests, explore secluded trails on
foot, horseback, mountain-bike or quad. This is a
land of legends combining contemporary artistic
creation and local traditions.
It is a green land of valleys peppered with cows,
lakes and forests, the mythical Dordogne river,
the Impressionists’ valley in the Creuse, the
Millevaches Regional Nature Park, the Vassivière
lake – and markets where one can buy directly
from local farmers. According to popular belief,
the Millevaches plateau, located in the heart of
the area, gets its name from the Germanic term
batz (source), making it “the land of a thousand
sources”. It is also a paradise for fishermen, hikers
and ornithologists.
KEY ASSETS
• A paradise for nature fans: a water
wonderland with thousands of streams.
A kaleidoscope of landscapes.
• Many outdoor activities available: hiking,
fishing, cycling...
• Traditions and gastronomy: farms,
markets...
KEY ASSETS
• A rich medieval past:
castles, towers, knights
and troubadours.
• Savoir-faire and
excellence: Limoges
enamel and porcelain,
Aubusson tapestry, St
Junien leather
• Land of gastronomy:
outdoor markets
Just a short distance from
the ocean and the Pyrenees,
the Armagnac Landes area
presents two sides of nature.
To the north is a pine forest
with its sandy trails. To the
south, the valleys are planted
with vineyards and oak groves.
THE MULTI-FACETED LANDES
AREA
Discover the Landes coastline
– its endless beaches, its pine
forest, its large boating lakes,
its protected streams and
ponds, its kilometres of bike
paths. Like a time machine
in the heart of the forest, the
Marquèze Ecomuseum will
immerse you in the 19 th century
life of the Landes of Gascony.
THE LANDES
FOREST AND
ARMAGNAC:
A LAND OF
SHARING
ARMAGNAC, THE TWISTS
AND TURNS OF DISTILLATION
Traditional grapes, a unique
terroir and age-old savoirfaire
have combined to create
a truly exceptional product:
Armagnac. This ancestral eau
de vie has a very distinctive
bouquet.
Also take time to visit Montde-Marsan,
“capital of the
Landes” and the Gascon walled
city. Don’t miss the famous
celebrations of la Madeleine
(mid-July): 5 days and 5 nights
of celebration for all ages
throughout the city. Everyone
in blue and white!
And visit Dax and the thermal
towns of the Landes. Visitors
appreciate Dax for its Gascon
roots, a certain idea of
gastronomy at the gateway to
a natural environment that is
steeped in the typically gentle
Landes lifestyle, as well as its
subtle mix of Art Deco and the
sand of the bull ring.
Bonaguil castle
THE LOT & GARONNE VALLEYS:
GASTRONOMY AND HERITAGE
ALONG THE RIVER
Hospitable and steeped in
history, these valleys offer
a host of cultural, fun and
leisure activities for a great
holiday experience in the
heart of the South West. With
Agen prunes, Marmande
tomatoes, strawberries, kiwis
and the wines of Buzet and
Marmande, gastronomy and
local produce are part of the
identity of this terroir.
Along the Garonne canal and
the Baïse, Lot and Garonne
rivers, which are largely
navigable on a houseboat,
choose a style of tourism
where you take the time
to go from lock to lock to
discover the treasures of
their heritage. Don’t miss
the nearby medieval towns,
like Villeneuve-sur-Lot, the
largest royal bastide of the
region, then visit the bastides
of Monflaquin and Monpazier
and the village of Pujols le
Haut, ranked among “The
Most Beautiful Villages of
France”. Continuing upstream
on the Lot, you’ll discover
the Bonaguil castle, one of
the most well-preserved and
impressive castles in France.
Still further upstream, don’t
hesitate to visit the city of
Agen and take the opportunity
to discover its famous
aqueduct over the Garonne.
Not far from there, families
and thrill seekers will love
the attractions at the Walibi
South West theme park and
Aqualand Agen.
Theme Holidays
Holidaymakers increasingly
want to follow “themes”
when they visit a region,
adding to the charm and interest of
their tour. A dynamic region, based
on a real art of living, Nouvelle-
Aquitaine offers a multitude of
theme activities for a holiday where
you never get bored!
The most obvious example of this
is of course the theme of wine
(and spirits) tourism, where visitors
taste and eventually purchase
the products. It also goes without
saying that many people travel to
Nouvelle-Aquitaine for its globally
renowned cuisine.
When it comes to history and
culture, visitors can discover sites
dating back to the first traces of
human presence in Europe.
For those loving the outdoor life,
whether it’s cycling, hiking or
surfing, there’s plenty to do, and
the growing wellness sector is
also particularly well catered for.
The curious can also learn how the
local master-craftspeople produce
the articles for which the region is
famous!
Finally, active holidays lovers will
have the choice of several theme
parks and the incredible Terra
Aventura treasure hunt available
throughout all the region.
RIDING THE WAVES
Biarritz became France’s top surf town in
1957. However, Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s surf
spots are not exclusively on the Basque
Coast. The beaches of Ile d’Oléron, Médoc
(Soulac, Carcans Océan, Lacanau) and
the Landes area (Biscarrosse, Moliets
and Mimizan) are also popular among
surfers of all levels. Nouvelle-Aquitaine
has nearly 400 sports and physical
Garorock awaits you in Marmande at the
They almost all offer bikes on loan
Bordeaux or La Rochelle) or canoe, a
Segway or an electric scooter. Another
way of appropriating the city: during an
escape game (in Poitiers or Bordeaux)
or alongside a greeter in Limoges.
If you can’t make it to Bayonne,
other cities in the area (Mont-de-
Marsan, Dax...) also have their
own local celebrations that attract
thousands of festival-goers.
THE NEW HALLS OF PAU
The fruits of urban planning,
architectural design and in-depth
many hiking possibilities, notably in the
Millevaches Park (one of the 4 Regional
Nature Parks in Nouvelle-Aquitaine).
A GREAT DIVERSITY OF
LANDSCAPES, ATMOSPHERES
AND POSSIBILITIES FOR CYCLISTS
Explore Périgord Vert’s forests, the
Atlantic Coast, the Garonne canal, the
Vélodyssée
Pyrenees passes, and vineyards of
Cognac and Bordeaux! Among Europe’s
great cycling routes, Velodyssee goes
from Brittany to Hendaye in the Pays
Basque via the Pays de la Loire and
the Gironde Estuary. This marked,
Exclusive Right of Way path, is a terrific
way to discover the area. Another
cycling route, Flow Vélo, connects the
Atlantic Ocean to Périgord. Half of the
route runs along waterways, namely
the slow and peaceful Charente river.
Flow Vélo is a prestigious route which
stops over in the Cognac area.
RIVERS AND CANALS
There is nothing quite like a boat ride to
change your perspective!
There are many possibilities all over
the area, from the Gironde estuary to
the north, to the Bidassoa crossing, a
natural border between France and
Spain. The Garonne canal, the Lot area
and Baïse offer visitors a network of
197 navigable waterways. Onboard
traditional wooden, flat-bottomed
boats called “gabarres”, in Bergerac or
La Roque Gageac in Perigord, or in a
“galupe”, on the Huchet current in the
Landes area, discover the charms of
Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s riverside villages
and sites.
HIKING IN THE WILD
At the Vassivière lake, a variety of
signposted hilly trails allow one
to hike along the shores of lakes,
streams, moors and forests or on
the vast expanse of the Millevaches
plateau. On foot, on horseback, by
mountain bike, around the Rives
track, on 250 km of signposted trails
but also on the water, exceptional
natural environments can be
discovered.
BIARRITZ SURF CRUISE
This is a fun concoction combining a
corner of paradise – the Basque coast
and its waves – with a surfboard and
a mega-style comfort cruiser electric
bike. Itinerary highlights: the Cavaliers
Beach at Anglet, La Côte des Basques
beach in Biarritz, Parlementia beach
in Guéthary or the Plage du centre
in Bidart.
EXPLORE NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE IN
A HOUSEBOAT HOTEL
Upstream from Bordeaux, cruises
(organised by 7 different companies)
take visitors to discover the river
Garonne, near the “Entre-deux-Mers”
and Sauternais areas. Downstream,
head to see Gironde’s estuary,
its islands, the village of Pauillac:
the gateway to Medoc and Blaye
vineyards, the Vauban riverbank
Citadel and the estuary riverbank, on
the opposite side.
THEME HOLIDAYS
Outside Spa, Les Sources de Caudalie
Whether you are looking for a postnatal treatment on île de Ré, a romantic weekend
in Arcachon, a relaxing city dweller break in La Rochelle or Hendaye, each of
Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s well-being holidays is a combination of harmony of the senses
and total relaxation in the beauty of landscapes, with mild weather, from January to
December!
A WIDE RANGE OF THERMAL
ESTABLISHMENTS
From the Spa Source and Thermal
Cure Centre of La Roche Posay to Les
Thermes Evaux les Bains, passing
by the numerous establishments of
the Pyrenees (Thermes de Salies-de-
Béarn, Thermes de Cambo-les-Bains or
Thermes des Eaux-Bonnes), Nouvelle-
Aquitaine is France’s #1 Thermal
destination, Dax being France’s number
one thermal destina-tion. The diversity of
subsoils makes the amount of mineral
salts and trace elements vary in the
water they filter, so there are many
different virtues and types of treatments.
THALASSOTHERAPY:
THE KEY TO HAPPINESS
What is thalassotherapy? Ocean water
treatments in spas located less than
1,000 metres from the sea. The word was
invented by Doctor de La Bonnardière, in
Arcachon, and the Pays Basque is, with
Brittany, the most emblematic region.
BALNEOLOGY
The same treatments as thalassotherapy,
but with “regular” water, are known as
balneotherapy. Essential oil massages,
hot stones, shiatsu… relaxation, inner
NATURISM, A MODERN WAY
OF LIFE
Naturism has a long history that goes
back to the Age of Enlightment and over
the years, has become one of the main
values of environmental-friendliness,
sustainable development and mutual
respect.
On the Atlantic Coast, the mild oceanic
climate favoured the establishment of
naturist sites along 720km of coastline
in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Space, pine trees
for shade, long sandy beaches… this
perfectly describes Montalivet’s Hélio
Marin Centre (CHM), in Médoc. This
is France’s oldest (1949) and Europe’s
largest naturist holiday resort.
In the countryside, green naturism also
has its fans. Corrèze or Périgord forests,
crystal clear rivers, a beach at Vassivière
lake, the hills of Lot-et-Garonne with
orchards worthy of the Garden of Eden,
all the way to the foot of the Pyrénées...
It is wonderful to live in the intimacy and
comfort of preserved nature.
Improved Destination
Information Equals Happier
Travellers
While international tourism continues to grow,
and France remains in the #1 position as a
destination, global competition is heating
up year by year, and consequently each
destination is forced to fight harder and harder
for the tourist dollar.
In this battle, the travel advisor increasingly
needs to have new and precise ideas to
present to their customers, in order to inspire
and excite them, and to motivate them to
travel to places they may not have originally
considered.
SMARTguide will be instrumental in assisting
travel and tourism professionals in finding the
“unique selling points” that will in effect push
business to this destination.
Furthermore, the clarity and simplicity of both
the information and structure of the offering
will, we believe, lead to more “savvy” advice and
consequently, happier, more satisfied clients.
We take our hats off to the Regional Tourist
Board for their “smart” promotional initiative.
We believe the promotion being undertaken by
