Celebrating 80 Years
With An Eye On The Future
By nicol jenkins
Gulf Stream School has a long
history of excellence in education.
The independent school is
celebrating its 80th year.
Gulf Stream School has a heritage of fostering educational
excellence for Pre-kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle
school students. The school primarily serves Boynton Beach,
Delray Beach, Lake Worth, Boca Raton, Lantana, Manalapan, and
the surrounding Palm Beach area. Graduates have been welcomed
at schools around the world.
They are a community of learners - sharing, discussing, debating,
and solving new challenges every day. As their values indicate,
they “actively engage students and faculty in a thought provoking
educational experience that fosters the skills, habits, and passion
for lifelong learning.”
Their program’s approach is about more than just the subject
matter. It is about inspiring and empowering students to develop
intellectual curiosity and achieve personal success.
The school faculty maintains traditional learning goals while
keeping current with the latest innovations in technology.
“Gulf Stream School has 80 years of history but we are mindful of
the future of learning. We offer an innovative curriculum and programs
enhanced by technology; we continuously review standards
for the use of technology, incorporating new techniques with traditional
methods of education,” said Michael Mahady, Director of
Admission & Secondary School Placement for Gulf Stream School.
“It is the way society is evolving. Children now utilize numerous
electronic devices on a daily basis. We have an obligation to prepare
children for high school, college and the real world. We make
sure they are prepared for the future,” said Casey Wilson, Director
of Development for Gulf Stream School.
The local school has added new programs and curriculum to enhance
advanced learning. One future enhancement is the summer
renovation of the library, converting the space into a collaborative
learning commons by adding film and video editing, multimedia,
robotics, 3D printing, and more. They also offer a wide variety of
courses and afterschool programs including a STEM program,
iMovie to create videos and commercials, robotics, along with
cooking classes, drama, arts and athletics.
“At Gulf Stream School, we feel it is critical to support our teachers
by providing meaningful and impactful opportunities for professional
development. Our teachers are enthusiastic about continuing
their own education. They are passionate about seeking
better ways to inspire our students,” said Wilson.
The teachers believe that active collaboration and the integration
of ideas, while incorporating emerging technologies in the
classroom have helped students excel in learning.
“Watching the children in computer class brings me great excitement
while they collaborate with their peers. The projects require
the students to draw on information from many different disciplines
to come up with creative solutions. For example, math skills
are used when making a model to scale to 3D print or determining
the angle to turn a robot. Language arts skills are necessary to read
for meaning during the design research and development, and for
communicating their ideas. As the students work through problems
and test different solutions, they are required to think critically and
persevere until they succeed,” said Bridget Langford, Lower School
Science and Technology Teacher.
Shawn Harahush, Middle School Math and Robotics Teacher, said,
“The robotics program fuses instruction with key concepts such as
logic, trial and error and proportional reasoning. It allows students
to work in teams to solve open-ended tasks. The program encourages
students to plan, create, test and evaluate and test their ideas. It
fosters the development of 21st century skills such as problem solving,
programming, and experimentation. The program makes the
students more aware of the connection among math, science, and the
world around them. In addition, to the technical skills they are learning,
it also is a lot of fun and encourages an abundance of creativity.”
Gulf Stream School takes a personal interest in getting to know
each applicant and his or her family. It is their objective to understand
your educational goals and to provide you with a comprehensive
understanding of the school, its curriculum and culture.
They invite parents and prospective students to visit the campus,
see them in action, and talk with current faculty and students as a
first step in the admission process.
