RETAIL DESIGN EXPO EVOLVES TO CREATE RETAILEXPO
Retail Design Expo (RDE), the UK’s leading
event for innovation in retail design, marketing
and VM, has combined with Retail Digital
Signage Expo (RDSE) and Retail Business
Technology Expo (RBTE), Europe’s largest retail
solutions show, as one unified show for 2019,
to mirror the transformation being seen in the
retail industry and better meet the needs of its
show audiences. Reed’s three retail shows
have transformed into a single event,
RetailEXPO, to bring together over 15,000
retailers, brands, retail design businesses and
tech exhibitors to the 2019 show, taking place
on 1-2 of May at London’s Olympia.
The move to unify three of Europe’s leading
retail trade shows was based on extensive
independent research, talking to over 150
senior retailers and brands that represent the
shows’ audiences – from CEOs to sole traders,
from multinationals to small independent
shops as well as pureplay and omnichannel
businesses. The findings revealed greater
need for collaboration amongst retail teams,
with design now working more closely together
with tech, property and marketing to deliver
enhanced customer experiences, as well as the
emergence of customer-specific teams and
roles.
The research also recognises that disruption by
pure-plays is prompting retailers to re-evaluate
the role of their bricks-and-mortar stores,
placing store design at the heart of new
strategies to increase footfall and deliver
immersive brand experiences. This dynamic is
forging the need for stronger collaboration
between retail design and technology and IT
teams to deliver the impactful experiential
retail encounters customers now expect in an
engaging way.
Nicole Mills, Senior Event Director at Reed
Exhibitions, explained: “There is a seismic shift
going on in UK retail - every day we read about
store closures, yet at the same time UK retail
sales are actually increasing by 1.9% so far this
year. As the UK’s leading retail event, we had
to react, which prompted us to undertake
significant research amongst the UK’s most
senior retailers – and they all told us the same
story. Retail survival means addressing
customer needs holistically, which requires
traditionally siloed departments, including
design, IT, property and marketing, working
together in a unified fashion. This shift
recognises that whilst design is still bought by
retail design teams, other departments are now
deeply involved in the process.”
Borne out of the research findings, the new
RetailEXPO show reflects this changing
dynamic for retailers, who recognise the need
to put the customer firmly at the centre of their
businesses.
By reacting to the changes in the industry and
bringing the three shows together, the
RetailEXPO show will evolve into the trade
innovation and inspiration to our show
“The role of the store in modern omnichannel
retail is being reimagined – it’s no longer
enough for shops to provide a transactional
space where products are simply displayed and
paid for. The survival of the High Street relies
on bricks-and-mortar delivering engaging,
experience-led environments where shoppers
can explore, be inspired and immerse
themselves in a brand’s identity – and
collaboration between in-store design and
digital tech teams will be key to realising this,”
he concluded.
Matt Bradley, Event Director of RetailEXPO,
commented: “The consolidation of all three
retail shows into the RetailEXPO mirrors the
changing dynamics of the industry and how
retailers are looking to enhance customer
experience, through the convergence of store
design and technology. This single event
MATCHING SERVICE
We are pleased to announce a new benefit for our members, the
SDEA Member Matching Service – m2m. SDEA President, Angus
Morton of BBrown Display Materials, believes there is huge
potential for members to trade with each other and the best way to
do this is for every member to know the products and services each
offer.
The form is extremely quick and easy to complete – simply tick all
the boxes that apply to your company’s products and/or services
and tick those that your company may be interested in purchasing.
The Association will then send details to you for those members
interested in your products and vice versa.
The more members who complete the form, the more potential for
opportunities to trade so I encourage all our members to take five
minutes and return the form.
This service will be updated on a monthly basis to give members
the best possible route to connect their businesses.
barkers & shelf management; menu holders; acrylic plinths, bridges &
risers; Slatwall shelves & accessories and specialist point of sale display for
Managing Director, Mike Wright, said “We have a large number of trade
customers across many sectors and we have recently introduced online
accounts to help make ordering easier. Now they can also access lots of
products at genuine cost price – it’s a great opportunity to stock up and
save while stocks last.”
Registered trade customers will be able to log in to their Wrights GPX Group
Mike Wright, said “As individuals we are used to the benefits of accessing
our accounts when ordering online & we want our Wrights GPX trade
customers to enjoy the same advantages. We’ve made it easy to register
and easy to use – helping customers save time & order the correct product
every time.”
“Customers are still welcome to call the team or order in their usual way,
but we would encourage them to create an online account and check out its
many advantages.”
RE-INVENTING RETAIL WITH
SHOPFITTING WAREHOUSE
Retail is reinventing itself. Success in the ever-evolving retail environment
means anticipating a more connected customer who wants something
different from their in-store experience. People expect to find something
that they cannot get from online shopping, a tangible experience where
they can touch, trial and feel a product. The vision should be to bring
shoppers and retailers together through personalisation, creating an
exciting customer experience which challenges the ideals of the everyday
purchasing journey.
Human beings are programmed to respond to emotion, making many
important decisions based on how we feel, and this is influenced by the
environment around us. Making purchases based on emotion is nothing
new so the most successful retail spaces have always appealed to the
heart, not the mind, this impulse is usually what creates the action! If we
take this philosophy and apply it to our showrooms it could translate as; be
inspiring, be adventurous and bold, or why bother? It’s possible that if you
are not inspiring people then your display could just be simply ‘existing’.
The key is to create a focus… an energy which should run seamlessly into
all aspects of the customer journey in your store. This is a great time to reevaluate
your shop-floor, the layout and most importantly the experience
you want your customer to take away from your brand.
So, what should you consider when planning a point of sale concept to
engage and excite your target consumer and how do you go about
incorporating necessities with the ‘wow’ factor? Shopfitting Warehouse
have some great ideas and solutions for a range of sectors from retail
fashion to garden centres. If you are fitting out, perhaps refurbishing,
improving your shop-floor, or simply setting out your latest seasonal trends
and promotions, get
some inspiration and
have a browse to see
how each display can
help create a positive
and enjoyable shopping
experience for your
customers.
MEMBER FOCUS - LEACH
Graphic display specialist Leach has called upon the signage sector to
adjust its environmental mindset, amidst mounting pressures for
businesses to do more.
The 127-year-old business has long had a ‘green’ conscience, with
products in the suite incorporating LED lights for energy-efficiency and the
quick-change magnetic Stik Wallpaper winning the Queen’s Award for
Innovation for its reusability and ease of transport.
LEACH DRIVES ENVIRONMENTAL AGENDA
WITH NEW INNOVATION PROJECT
than larger vehicles. Power consumption is reduced by up to 30% through
the use of technology-controlled sensors; all constituent materials are
100% recyclable and the return-to-base option closes the loop on this
product too.
The patented solution is fire-rated, CE certified and manufacturing lead
times are also lessened by up to 50%.
But at the company’s innovation summit 12 months ago, a consultation
with leaders from the worlds of retail, events, signage and more, unveiled a
sense of urgency for wider-spread environmental focus.
Leach’s Head of Innovation Mike Wilshaw
Determined to put their money where their mouth is, Leach’s R&D team
has therefore ploughed 12 months and £100,000 of investment into
graphic display solutions with even greater green-performance.
The newly-launched Eco-Screen is Leach’s latest HD fabric graphic product,
made from textiles composed of 100% recycled yarn. It can be used for all
back-lit displays with no reduction in photographic or illumination quality
and when the graphic needs updating, the fabric can be returned to Leach
for onward recycling. This ‘return to base’ model means the solution is
completely circular, with two recycled plastic bottles required to produce
1m² of Eco-Screen. 2.29 tons of CO2 are also saved for every ton of plastic
bottles salvaged.
Commenting on Leach’s mounting environmental focus, head of innovation
Mike Wilshaw said: “Topics like carbon footprint, material reuse, closed
loop business models and single-use plastics were once of interest only to
the minority, but now they’re mainstream issues that organisations and the
general public alike are trying hard to address.
“While we hope the UK’s resource agenda will become stronger and
stronger as the years pass, we cannot be reliant on government policy
alone. Those of us in industry need to do something too!”
But eco solutions shouldn’t be to the detriment of commercial
performance, stresses Mike.
“With innovation comes opportunity – something companies have known
for some time – but often ‘being green’ comes at a cost,” he explained.
“That’s why we’ve worked hard to create a display solution that satisfies
organisations’ environmental conscious without being any more expensive.
“Throughout the 12-month R&D journey we’ve also worked hard to ensure
this product is no less robust than our lightboxes with a dibond backboard,
easier to install, and with absolutely no reduction in illumination quality – in
fact it is up to 40% brighter!”
Leach began life as a one-man photographic studio in 1891. In April 2018,
the 100-strong business was acquired by French-owned global
manufacturing and services group Chargeurs, to help fuel the firm’s global
expansion.
The carbon footprint benefits are further maximised when the Eco-Screen is
used on the new Leach Box – a revolutionary ultra-bright illuminated
display product which uses a flexible lightsheet as the LED backboard,
instead of a rigid dibond back. Consequently, this type of lightbox can be
rolled up and transported in a recycled tube, in the back of a car rather
MEMBER NEWS
BREXIT HR MYTHS BUSTED BY CITATION
While we wait to see what parliamentary consensus can be reached over
the next few weeks (the prospects of which seem dim), Citation look at
some myths many employers have regarding Brexit.
Myth #1
“I’ll have to dismiss all my EU national employees when the UK leaves the
EU in March 2019…”
This is certainly untrue and could constitute discrimination and unfair
dismissal. The government initially proposed under the, now rejected,
Withdrawal Agreement, all EU nationals resident in the UK by December
2020 had the right to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme. This would
give them settled status, or ‘pre-settled status’ if they had lived in the UK
for less than 5 years.
The EU Settlement Scheme opens on 30 March 2019 and must be applied
for on an individual basis by each employee. Under the previously proposed
Withdrawal Agreement, EU citizens would be able to enjoy their EU free
movement rights in the UK including the right to work, until the end of
2020.
What about a no-deal Brexit – i.e. where no Withdrawal Agreement has
been passed?
If a no-deal Brexit happens then there will be no two-year transition period.
However, the government has confirmed that it will still continue with the
Settlement Scheme for all EU citizens albeit with some important changes.
The Scheme will only apply to EU citizens and their family members who are
residing in the UK by 29 March 2019. They must also apply to the Scheme
by December 2020, rather than June 2021.
Myth #2
“Because EU National employees have to apply for settled status
themselves, I have no responsibilities…”
As an employer, you still have a duty to make sure everyone working for you
has the right to do so in the UK. The Home Office has advised that all
employers communicate the application process and deadlines for applying
under the Settlement Scheme ahead of time.
If you’re unsure as to the exact number of EU nationals you have working
for you, you can use HR records and contracts of employment as a way to
try and keep track. Or if you use an online management platform, such
as Citation’s Atlas platform, this can provide an overall snapshot for you.
What about a no-deal Brexit?
If a no-deal Brexit transpires the Settlement Scheme will only apply to EU
citizens and their family members who are residing in the UK by 29 March
2019.
Myth #3
“Employment law is going to fundamentally change when we leave the
EU…”
This isn’t necessarily true. A lot of European law has been incorporated
into UK law, for example, the TUPE Regulations, Agency Worker Regulations
and the Working Time Directive. Unless a law is actively repealed, then the
UK will still have to abide by those laws.
While some employment laws and regulations have come to the UK
through the EU – many of our significant employment laws originated in the
UK anyway, such as unfair dismissal rights, workplace discrimination and
the National Minimum Wage.
What about a no-deal Brexit?
The same legal position would apply in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
Myth #4
“Irish citizens have to apply for settled status to continue living and working
in the UK…”
Irish nationals have rights and entitlement to live and work in the
UK protected by the Common Travel Area (CTA). Established in 1923, it’s
an open borders area agreement that regulates arrangements between the
UK and Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man and the
Channel Islands, including free movement and employment.
That means that no Irish citizens will be required to apply for settled status
to continue to live, work or study, access social security and public services
in the UK. This is applied on a mutual basis to UK citizens living and
working in Ireland.
What about a no-deal Brexit?
Irish nationals in the UK and UK citizens in Ireland will be fully protected
under the Common Travel Area regardless of a no-deal situation.
Deal or no deal? Citation are with you at every step…
Managing your workforce in the face of uncertainty can be a daunting task,
but not an impossible one. Citation’s Head of HR & Employment Law Gillian
McAteer comments; “We’re facing a time of great uncertainty when it
comes to Brexit, but there are still important steps employers can take to
protect their business and plan for the future.”
With the help of Citation’s team of expert HR & Employment Law advisors,
they can guide you through the process step-by-step.
