Later he jo<strong>in</strong>ed American Express, where he pulled an<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g a pro at handl<strong>in</strong>g both domestic and<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational airl<strong>in</strong>es ticket<strong>in</strong>g and visa’s for different<br />

countries and manag<strong>in</strong>g end <strong>to</strong> end travel, Ajay started<br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g hotel book<strong>in</strong>gs, RFP (Rates for proposal),<br />

contract<strong>in</strong>g, and client management <strong>to</strong> its core, Ajay<br />

functioned as a National Account Manager handl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

high-profile clients for FCM – an Australian based<br />

company.<br />

This journey sculpted him <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> a rare breed of people<br />

who travel an extra mile <strong>to</strong> quench cus<strong>to</strong>mer needs – a<br />

star performer honored with client appreciation<br />

certificates, global award. While his experience at FCM<br />

left him unsatisfied, his efforts dissolved despite do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

every deed with hard work and determ<strong>in</strong>ation. Also,<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g from corporate travel background he saw a huge<br />

gap and opportunity <strong>to</strong> support and specialize <strong>in</strong><br />

Soon, the dream of becom<strong>in</strong>g an entrepreneur started<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g shape. Plac<strong>in</strong>g the corners<strong>to</strong>nes of his venture <strong>in</strong><br />

Struggle – <strong>The</strong> Constant Companion<br />

Hold<strong>in</strong>g the re<strong>in</strong>s of an organization is not an easy task.<br />

Lead<strong>in</strong>g Kaia with courage and personal sav<strong>in</strong>gs from<br />

last few years of employment and with a personal loan<br />

obta<strong>in</strong>ed, Ajay started promot<strong>in</strong>g Karnataka as a <strong>to</strong>urism<br />

dest<strong>in</strong>ation. His gut feel<strong>in</strong>g, confidence and the learn<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

personal travel services is good but would take time <strong>to</strong><br />

generate revenue. As such, Ajay changed his strategies<br />

A ZEALOUS IT SECURITY PROFESSIONAL<br />

This screenplay describes an entrepreneur who<br />

comes from Ranchi, Jharkhand – represented by the<br />

one-and-only superstar cricketer MS Dhoni, who<br />

made India proud <strong>in</strong>ternationally. Anil Raj – a leader,<br />

creative th<strong>in</strong>ker, modernizer, and a tech-savvy persona<br />

An Exceptional Journey<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g his early days of school<strong>in</strong>g at St. Aloysius High<br />

school <strong>in</strong> Ranchi, Anil was an ardent follower of technology<br />

and science. Participat<strong>in</strong>g and w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g a few science<br />

exhibitions and tech competitions, his <strong>in</strong>terest was rapidly<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g the re<strong>in</strong>s of technology. As the next step, he moved<br />

<strong>to</strong> Delhi <strong>to</strong> pursue his B.Tech from the prestigious Delhi<br />

University, where his <strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>to</strong>wards computer science<br />

and technology started shap<strong>in</strong>g up. This was the time when<br />

Anil recognized the necessity of ‘Security’ <strong>in</strong> an<br />

application, database, code or network, which catapulted<br />

him <strong>to</strong>wards Ethical Hack<strong>in</strong>g and motivated him <strong>to</strong> pillar<br />

his career <strong>in</strong> IT security.<br />

After complet<strong>in</strong>g his graduation, Anil jo<strong>in</strong>ed App<strong>in</strong><br />

Technologies as an Information Security Evangelist and<br />

successfully stirred his role of IT Security Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs for<br />

corporate. His exceptional performance crowned him with<br />

the Best Employee Award and the journey unlocked the<br />

doors <strong>to</strong> App<strong>in</strong> Pune. This is where, he earned an<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> work with IBM on their Vodafone project as<br />

a Senior Information Security Consultant. This volume<br />

exposed Anil <strong>to</strong> real-time VAPT projects and contributed <strong>in</strong><br />

shap<strong>in</strong>g up his professional life at its best. Later, mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

Tech Mah<strong>in</strong>dra filled him with exemplary expertise <strong>to</strong><br />

With this substantial amount of experience and good<br />

Focus<strong>in</strong>g on growth-oriented goals, Anil takes pride <strong>in</strong><br />

Currently, he aims <strong>to</strong> expand his terri<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>in</strong> terms of talent<br />

An Industrious and Path-break<strong>in</strong>g Leader<br />

Challenges are life’s way of test<strong>in</strong>g a person’s mettle.<br />

While a majority of the population is <strong>in</strong>timidated<br />

by challenges, some thrive on them and there are<br />

even few who challenge themselves <strong>to</strong> be better than they<br />

are. Bithika Anand falls <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the rare category of<br />

self-motivated people who cont<strong>in</strong>uously challenge<br />

themselves and are blessed with the ability <strong>to</strong> see every<br />

challenge as an opportunity. An all-rounder, right from her<br />

childhood and always a people’s person, she has enjoyed<br />

and KPMG, lead<strong>in</strong>g accountancy firms, where her work<br />

primarily covered audit and taxation. She then <strong>to</strong>ok up the<br />

role of CFO with India’s <strong>to</strong>pmost law firm, erstwhile<br />

Amarchand Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co and was<br />

soon given the dual responsibility as the COO. She<br />

promoted a culture of work delegation, <strong>to</strong>ok active charge<br />

of hir<strong>in</strong>g smart professionals for strengthen<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

support teams, and started actively build<strong>in</strong>g contacts and<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g the corporate law practice of the firm. Her work<br />

was very satisfy<strong>in</strong>g but not satiat<strong>in</strong>g and the dynamics soon<br />

with them. Restrictions imposed on advertis<strong>in</strong>g, market<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and solicit<strong>in</strong>g of work by Lawyers made it difficult <strong>to</strong><br />

approach law firms and apprise them of management<br />

concepts, who were not <strong>to</strong>o keen <strong>to</strong> try newer concepts like<br />

brand enhancement, onl<strong>in</strong>e engagement with students,<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g practice by way of travell<strong>in</strong>g and speak<strong>in</strong>g at<br />

conferences and adopt<strong>in</strong>g best HR practices.” All these<br />

I was associated with patient relationship management very<br />

early <strong>in</strong> my pharma career. Work<strong>in</strong>g closely with patients<br />

and see<strong>in</strong>g their plight was a huge revelation. In spite of<br />

several breakthrough <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> the field of medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

the benefits reach only a m<strong>in</strong>iscule segment of the<br />

population. I felt the patients deserve <strong>to</strong> get better outcomes<br />

for the treatment they are pay<strong>in</strong>g for. I felt that the exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

healthcare system was not patient centric and felt a strong<br />

urge <strong>to</strong> change it.<br />

Fate could have it, at the peak of my corporate career; I was<br />

detected with breast cancer. My personal experience<br />

through the journey <strong>to</strong> recovery brought me even closer <strong>to</strong><br />

the plight of the patients and that was the turn<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t that<br />

gave rise <strong>to</strong> Saarathi Healthcare, <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />

any proven results, the pharmaceutical companies were not<br />

comfortable <strong>in</strong> forgo<strong>in</strong>g their set practices which were <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry starts with a glimpse <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the life of an<br />

established tra<strong>in</strong>er and entrepreneur, also the<br />

crea<strong>to</strong>r of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programme TPR (Thought<br />

Process Reeng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g), Sajeev Nair, who was receiv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Key attributes of a great CEO cannot merely be def<strong>in</strong>ed by words, but must be constantly shaped and polished like<br />

a sculpture. <strong>The</strong> most important one be<strong>in</strong>g agile, the confidence <strong>to</strong> make fast decisions that can affect the course of<br />

the journey of the organization. <strong>The</strong> second one is about problem-solv<strong>in</strong>g which needs <strong>to</strong> be based on a strong<br />

sense of empathy <strong>to</strong>wards the people <strong>in</strong>volved; after all, everyth<strong>in</strong>g that we do is for them. Strategiz<strong>in</strong>g synergy<br />

forms the third most important attribute. Partnership and alliances that we form are what makes our journey a<br />

A Passionate Technocrat<br />

Science and Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g complete each other. While<br />

science is all about explor<strong>in</strong>g, understand<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g knowledge, it is eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g that transforms<br />

science <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> action. <strong>The</strong> word eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g is derived from<br />

the Lat<strong>in</strong> words “<strong>in</strong>genium” mean<strong>in</strong>g “cleverness” and<br />

“<strong>in</strong>geniare” mean<strong>in</strong>g “<strong>to</strong> contrive or devise”. Human<br />

be<strong>in</strong>gs have always fallen back on eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> devise<br />

<strong>in</strong>ventions for better liv<strong>in</strong>g and noth<strong>in</strong>g motivates Eng<strong>in</strong>eers<br />

more than the desire <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d solutions <strong>to</strong> problems.<br />

Ravi Venugopal Gunti is one such technocrat, strategist<br />

and a passionate eng<strong>in</strong>eer who considers the journey of<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g the answers <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>ugh eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g problems as his<br />

primary source of motivation! He considers his current<br />

team and his senior colleague, Dr Dilip Bonde as his source<br />

of <strong>in</strong>spiration. He also idolizes Ratan Tata, Anand Mah<strong>in</strong>dra<br />

and Elon Musk for whom he has worked dur<strong>in</strong>g his journey<br />

for the past 25 years <strong>in</strong> different areas.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Trajec<strong>to</strong>ry of Success<br />

Ravi completed his Master of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g from Gu<strong>in</strong>dy<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g College (Anna University), Chennai. He<br />

worked as a tra<strong>in</strong>ee on the IRS 1B project at ISRO satellite<br />

centre, Bangalore. He then jo<strong>in</strong>ed Tata Mo<strong>to</strong>rs as a Senior<br />

Design Eng<strong>in</strong>eer and was part of the core team which<br />

started the design of the Tata Indica as part of <strong>The</strong> Advance<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Group <strong>in</strong> ERC (Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g research centre).<br />

He later jo<strong>in</strong>ed DSQ software and as part of the Found<strong>in</strong>g<br />

member of its Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Division, he worked for VW,<br />

Audi, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Damiler etc. <strong>The</strong> entrepreneur<br />

<strong>in</strong> him then collaborated with other technocrats <strong>to</strong> establish<br />

an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g services organisation “Plexion<br />

Technologies” with the f<strong>in</strong>ancial back<strong>in</strong>g of JP Morgan.<br />

This was later acquired by Mah<strong>in</strong>dra Group and<br />

transitioned <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> – Mah<strong>in</strong>dra Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and Mah<strong>in</strong>dra<br />

Aerospace <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

Ravi has excellent knowledge on all the Global OEM<br />

Design Standard, processes and technologies and has<br />

worked for almost all Au<strong>to</strong>-OEM projects directly or<br />

<strong>in</strong>directly. He is an expert <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g-up offshore<br />

development centres for Global OEM’s and Tier-1<br />

suppliers. Smart Enovations, which he co-founded <strong>in</strong> 2011<br />

with Dr Bonde and Dr CVR Reddy is an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

solutions and services organisation work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

product design and validation and <strong>in</strong>formation technology.<br />

<strong>The</strong> IT-enabled eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g services of Smart Enovations<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude product conceptualization, eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g design and<br />

CAE simulations, <strong>to</strong>ol<strong>in</strong>g and manufactur<strong>in</strong>g process<br />

<strong>The</strong> foundation of Micro F<strong>in</strong>ance Industry was<br />

laid by Nobel Laureate Mohammad Yunus <strong>in</strong> the<br />

year 1976. With the pass<strong>in</strong>g of each decade, this<br />

segment has gathered momentum and has been a major<br />

boon for the rural <strong>in</strong>habitants of the country <strong>in</strong> achiev<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2005 was a memorable year for Satyavir, go<strong>in</strong>g back he<br />

recalls, “I was <strong>in</strong>vited by the founder of Delhi House<br />

Society (a Society that runs various programs for<br />

destitute and disadvantaged communities <strong>in</strong> Delhi), <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>itially help and then <strong>to</strong> subsequently take it over, s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

it was on the verge of clos<strong>in</strong>g down ow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> various<br />

challenges and posed a threat <strong>to</strong> its existence. It is there<br />

where I saw the realities of the streets from a whole new<br />

perspective and <strong>in</strong>spired me <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> multiple jobs;<br />

one <strong>to</strong> earn and other <strong>to</strong> serve and give. Lead<strong>in</strong>g Sewa<br />

Ashram led me <strong>to</strong> target the <strong>in</strong>ter-generational poverty<br />

where families could start their own entrepreneurial<br />

ventures - someth<strong>in</strong>g that is preventive than curative”.<br />

Eventually, this experience was the platform based on<br />

which Shikhar came <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> existence with a motive <strong>to</strong><br />

enhance access <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ance and entrepreneurial<br />

opportunities. <strong>The</strong> tagl<strong>in</strong>e – “Shikhar <strong>to</strong> Shikhar” is an<br />

attempt <strong>to</strong> connect with the masses and expresses the<br />

partnership of theorganization. Over the years, Shikhar<br />

has been focus<strong>in</strong>g on build<strong>in</strong>g relationships with clients<br />

and design products that would address the life cycle<br />

needs. Although it hasn’t grown <strong>to</strong> the proportion of the<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry but it has focused on the client with its<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples and cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> march on its path of growth.<br />

Microf<strong>in</strong>ance Pvt. Ltd. (SMPL), Satyavir founded<br />

Shikhar <strong>in</strong> 2007 with an aim <strong>to</strong> provide access <strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

and entrepreneurial opportunities.Headquartered <strong>in</strong> New<br />

Delhi, it is engaged <strong>in</strong> micro f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g lend<strong>in</strong>g activities,<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>ancial services <strong>to</strong> poor women <strong>in</strong> India who<br />

are organized as Jo<strong>in</strong>t Liability Groups. Today it has a<br />

<strong>in</strong> states like Delhi NCR, Haryana, Uttarakhand,<br />

Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Odisha<br />

through 28 branches.<br />

It also hasBC partnership with renowned entities like<br />

MAS F<strong>in</strong>ancial Services, Suryoday SFB, and Belstar<br />

Investment & F<strong>in</strong>ance Pvt. Ltd that helps them <strong>to</strong> reach<br />

out <strong>to</strong> a larger consumer base.<strong>The</strong> company offers small<br />

value collateral free loans rang<strong>in</strong>g from 15,000 <strong>to</strong> 50,000<br />

INR and <strong>in</strong>dividual loans up<strong>to</strong> 5,00,000 INR. All<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial transactions are conducted <strong>in</strong> the group<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs organized near the habitats of the borrowers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rightful Intent<br />

Underl<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g poverty and depravity as the roadblocks for<br />

development, Satyavir strongly feels that these issues<br />

need multilevel engagement and multi-level stakeholder<br />

partnerships.Over the last decade, he is work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

regula<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> create an enabl<strong>in</strong>g environment and<br />

a common platform thereby br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the poor at the<br />

center stage of any function. He asserts that “I have been<br />

do<strong>in</strong>g this by be<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>dustry member on a quasiregula<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

body <strong>to</strong> enforce self-regulation.”<br />

Putt<strong>in</strong>g forth his thoughts, Satyavir th<strong>in</strong>ks that <strong>in</strong> a<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g country like India, one needs <strong>to</strong> th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

creatively, holistically and develop projects and ideas<br />

that will create more harmony. However, there should be<br />

equilibrium among the different sections of the society<br />

who recognize and honor each other’s existence <strong>to</strong> live a<br />

life of fullness.<br />

On the part<strong>in</strong>g note, he acknowledges that life has taught<br />

him a lot and he wishes <strong>to</strong> build a value-based, Godfear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

society that offers equal opportunities and<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imizes uneven control of resources. In this pursuit,<br />

many Shikhar’s will be birthed <strong>to</strong> partners with the less<br />

advantaged <strong>to</strong> offer them opportunities and shore them <strong>to</strong><br />

their heights.<br />

“I wish <strong>in</strong>ves<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> Microf<strong>in</strong>ance sec<strong>to</strong>r take a long term<br />

outlook for exit that will pave the way for lower cost of<br />

credit <strong>to</strong> cus<strong>to</strong>mers and that the Regula<strong>to</strong>r will ensure a<br />

level play<strong>in</strong>g field for all k<strong>in</strong>ds of entities, who serve this<br />

segment of the society,” concludes Satyavir.<br />
