You've devoted over 30 years to the bird and<br />
mammal faunas of Madagascar. What in a<br />
nutshell (pardon the pun) makes Madagascar so<br />
fascinating?<br />
The landscapes of Madagascar, distinguished by<br />
their different rock substrate, local climate, and<br />
associated vegetation, show remarkable variation<br />
across this nearly continental size island. This<br />
variation overlaid on elevation, natural climatic<br />
change, separation from other land masses in deep<br />
geological time, give rise to a highly diverse and<br />
endemic fauna and flora.<br />
Many organisms are restricted to relatively<br />
small portions of the island (referred to as micro<br />
endemics) and discovering these patterns and<br />
knowing what occurs in the different areas remains<br />
as interesting and engaging as when I arrived on the<br />
island three decades ago.<br />
