Early in the morning when I head to the beach with my boogie board and my dog, I feel full of gratitude for being able to indulge in the warmth of the rising sun, sounds, and colors of nature, and the waves that are lapping at my feet. This is what our visitors experienced as well who arrived in swarms from all over the world to enjoy the Envision Festival in the tiny town of Uvita. They came to share friendship, excellent music and workshops, the ocean, the hot climate, and the food. Our freshly harvested fruit is something so delicious it can never be compared with supermarket produce in the Northern hemisphere that was transported still green and after-ripened in dark containers. Por la mañana, cuando me dirijo a la playa con mi tabla de boogie y mi perro, me siento muy agradecida por poder disfrutar del calor del sol, los sonidos y colores de la naturaleza y las olas que acarician mis pies. Esto es también lo que nuestros visitantes que llegaron en enjambres desde todo el mundo para disfrutar del Festival de Envision experimentaron en la pequeña ciudad de Uvita. Aquí compartieron amistad, excelente música y talleres, el amplio océano, el clima cálido y la comida. Nuestra fruta recién cosechada es algo tan delicioso que nunca se puede comparar con los productos en los supermercados del hemisferio norte que son transportados todavía de color verde y luego madurados en contenedores oscuros.

Los secretos de los tiburones<br />
La Reserva Biológica Isla del Caño es uno de los ambientes<br />
más biodiversos del Pacífico Sur de Costa Rica;<br />
ofrece refugio a tiburones y rayas como el tiburón punta<br />
blanca (Triaenodon obesus), tiburón nodriza (Ginglymostoma<br />
unami), raya látigo (Hypanus longus), raya diablo (Mobula<br />
japanica), raya redonda (Urobatis pardalis), manta raya (Mobula<br />
birostris) y otras. La presencia de gr<strong>and</strong>es depredadores<br />
juega un papel muy importante en los ecosistemas control<strong>and</strong>o<br />
las poblaciones de sus presas mediante competencia<br />
o depredación. Sin embargo, estos peces de esqueleto cartilaginoso<br />
están muy amenazados por los efectos de la pesca<br />

A pesar de lo carismáticas que son muchas especies de tiburones<br />
y rayas se sabe muy poco sobre ellas. La falta de<br />
información ecológica básica representa un impedimento<br />
para lograr su protección. El proyecto “La Vida Secreta de<br />
los Tiburones”, un proyecto liderado por los biólogos Mario<br />
Espinoza y Marta Cambra del Centro de Investigación en<br />
Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (CIMAR) de la Universidad de<br />
Costa Rica (UCR) pretende responder preguntas importantes<br />
y fortalecer las medidas de manejo y conservación para tiburones<br />
y rayas en la Isla del Caño y otras Áreas Marinas<br />
Protegidas de Costa Rica. Algunas de las preguntas son: (1)<br />
¿En qué estado se encuentran las poblaciones de tiburones<br />
y rayas?; (2) ¿Cuáles son los sitios con mayor abundancia y<br />
diversidad de especies?; (3) ¿Qué factores afectan a la distribución<br />
y abundancia de las especies?; (4) ¿Pueden las Áreas<br />
Marinas Protegidas de Costa Rica beneficiar a los tiburones<br />
y rayas?<br />
El proyecto utiliza cámaras remotas submarinas con carnada<br />
para estudiar aspectos del comportamiento de tiburones<br />
y rayas. Además el olor de la carnada atrae a otras especies<br />
que serían difíciles de detectar. En Costa Rica es la primera<br />
vez que se utiliza esta novedosa técnica. Los biólogos capacitan<br />
a los guarda parques de la Isla del Caño y otras Áreas<br />
Marinas Protegidas para que en un futuro puedan darle<br />
continuidad al monitoreo. ■<br />
The Isla del Caño Biological Reserve is one of the most biodiverse environments<br />
in the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Pacific</strong> of Costa Rica. it offers refuge to sharks <strong>and</strong><br />
rays such as the white tip shark (Triaenodon obesus), the nurse shark,<br />
the whip ray (Hypanus longus), the devil ray (Mobula japanica), the round ray<br />
(Urobatis pardalis), the stingray (Mobula birostris) <strong>and</strong> others. The presence of<br />
large predators plays a very important role in the ecosystems controlling the<br />
populations of their prey through competition or predation. However, these<br />
cartilaginous skeleton fish are very threatened by the effects of illegal fishing,<br />
<strong>and</strong> overfishing, triggering negative effects throughout the ecosystem.<br />
Despite there being many species of sharks <strong>and</strong> rays, very little is known about<br />
them. The lack of basic ecological information represents an impediment to<br />
their protection. The project “The Secret Life of the Sharks”, a project led by<br />
biologists Mario Espinoza <strong>and</strong> Marta Cambra of the Center for Research in<br />
Marine Sciences <strong>and</strong> Limnology (CIMAR) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR),<br />
aims to answer important questions <strong>and</strong> strengthen management <strong>and</strong> conservation<br />
measures for sharks <strong>and</strong> rays around Caño Isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> other Marine<br />
Protected Areas of Costa Rica. Some of the questions are: (1) In what condition<br />
are shark <strong>and</strong> ray populations? (2) What are the sites with the greatest<br />
abundance <strong>and</strong> diversity of species? (3) What factors affect the distribution<br />
<strong>and</strong> abundance of the species? (4) Can Costa Rica´s Protected Areas benefit<br />
sharks <strong>and</strong> rays?<br />
The project uses remote underwater cameras with bait to study aspects of the<br />
behavior of sharks <strong>and</strong> rays. In addition, the smell of the bait attracts other species that would be difficult to detect. This is<br />
the first time that this innovative technique is used in Costa Rica. Park rangers of Isla del Caño, <strong>and</strong> other Marine Protected<br />
Areas, are trained by biologists in order for monitoring to continue. ■<br />
