Early in the morning when I head to the beach with my boogie board and my dog, I feel full of gratitude for being able to indulge in the warmth of the rising sun, sounds, and colors of nature, and the waves that are lapping at my feet. This is what our visitors experienced as well who arrived in swarms from all over the world to enjoy the Envision Festival in the tiny town of Uvita. They came to share friendship, excellent music and workshops, the ocean, the hot climate, and the food. Our freshly harvested fruit is something so delicious it can never be compared with supermarket produce in the Northern hemisphere that was transported still green and after-ripened in dark containers. Por la mañana, cuando me dirijo a la playa con mi tabla de boogie y mi perro, me siento muy agradecida por poder disfrutar del calor del sol, los sonidos y colores de la naturaleza y las olas que acarician mis pies. Esto es también lo que nuestros visitantes que llegaron en enjambres desde todo el mundo para disfrutar del Festival de Envision experimentaron en la pequeña ciudad de Uvita. Aquí compartieron amistad, excelente música y talleres, el amplio océano, el clima cálido y la comida. Nuestra fruta recién cosechada es algo tan delicioso que nunca se puede comparar con los productos en los supermercados del hemisferio norte que son transportados todavía de color verde y luego madurados en contenedores oscuros.

Costa Ballena está creciendo y precisa<br />
de una mayor seguridad comunitaria<br />
y servicios esenciales. Ya que el<br />
desarrollo y la infraestructura llevan tiempo,<br />
corresponde a la propia comunidad atender<br />
las necesidades más urgentes.<br />
Desde el año 2014, la asociación privada de<br />
guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards ha rescatado<br />
a 300 turistas, residentes y visitantes<br />
y asistido más de 100 situaciones médicas en<br />
la playa, carreteras e incluso en residencias<br />
privadas. Es el programa de guardavidas más<br />
exitoso del país y será modelo para un próximo<br />
plan piloto dirigido por la Cruz Roja y el<br />
Ministerio de Turismo.<br />
SafeBeach y Ojos en la Calle son otras dos<br />
historias de éxito. Con los fondos proporcionados<br />
inicialmente por el Programa de las<br />
Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo, CRUSA<br />
y la Fundación SOMOS, ambos programas de<br />
seguridad comunitaria están probados y listos<br />
para implementarse.<br />
SafeBeach ofrece patrullas de prevención de<br />
delitos. Equipos de jóvenes, formados por la<br />
policía y los guardavidas, patrullan nuestras<br />

playas y puntos de peligro en la ciudad. Durante<br />
los más de seis meses de operaciones,<br />
cero delitos se perpetraron en los lugares<br />
donde se realizaron estos patrullajes.<br />
Ojos en la Calle es una aplicación gratuita<br />
para teléfonos inteligentes que permite que<br />
cualquier persona pueda denunciar delitos<br />
incidentes y comportamientos sospechosos<br />
de forma anónima. En casos de emergencia,<br />
la aplicación notifica a la policía local.<br />
Mientras tanto, todos los datos del informe<br />
se recopilan para ayudar a resolver posibles<br />
eventos delictivos y dan la oportunidad de<br />
cuestionar las estadísticas gubernamentales.<br />

The Safest place in Costa Rica<br />
Costa Ballena is growing <strong>and</strong> with that comes a need for greater community<br />
security <strong>and</strong> essential services. Because development <strong>and</strong> infrastructure take<br />
time, it falls on the community itself to meet the most urgent needs.<br />
Since 2014, the private association, Guardavidas Costa Ballena Lifeguards, has<br />
rescued 300 tourists, residents <strong>and</strong> visitors, <strong>and</strong> attended over 100 medical situations<br />
on the beach, highway, <strong>and</strong> even private residences. It’s the most successful lifeguard<br />
program in the country <strong>and</strong> as a result, will be the model for an upcoming pilot run<br />
by the Red Cross <strong>and</strong> Ministry of Tourism.<br />
SafeBeach <strong>and</strong> Ojos en la Calle are two other success stories. With initial development<br />
funds provided by the United Nations Development Programme, CRUSA <strong>and</strong> SOMOS<br />
Foundation, both community security programs are proven <strong>and</strong> ready to scale.<br />
SafeBeach provides crime prevention patrols, teams of young people trained by the<br />
police <strong>and</strong> lifeguards patrol our beaches <strong>and</strong> hotspots in town. In over six months of<br />
operation, zero crimes occurred where patrols were engaged.<br />
Ojos en la Calle is a free app for your smartphone that allows anyone to anonymously<br />
report crimes, incidents <strong>and</strong> suspicious behavior. In cases of emergency, the app<br />
notifies local police. Meanwhile, all report data is collected to help solve crimes, <strong>and</strong><br />
give us the opportunity to challenge the government statistics. Please download it<br />

These programs are unique since they are private initiatives partnered with the<br />
government, which means we have a stake <strong>and</strong> say in how they operate.<br />
