Nearly $40,000 raised
through memorial pins
NEARLY $40,000 has been
raised for those affected by the
terror attacks through the sale of
memorial pins.
More than 2600 of the
heart-shaped Kotahitanga pins,
which symbolise unity and
togetherness, have been sold so far.
All the proceeds from the sale
of the pins will go to the Victim
Support fund to support those
affected by the terror attack.
More than 2600 pins have
been ordered so far, which will
raise nearly $40,000 for victim
support.
Director of design studio
McCarthy, Stephen McCarthy,
said the number of sales
had definitely exceeded his
expectations.
There are about 800 left in the
first order.
Most of the orders had been
for more than one pin, with
some orders of more than 100
pins placed, McCarthy said.
The pins, in the shape of two
sides of a heart embracing,
represent everyone from
Christchurch being one.
The kotahitanga pin has been
designed to represent unity and
togetherness.
He hoped it would help create
and an ongoing conversation
that would last past the events
happening now “because
we’ve got to change our way of
thinking”.
“A lot of things happen in
the digital realm but having
something physical . . . lasts a lot
longer. It’s a pin that someone
will have forever so that this
conversation can keep going, it’s
vitally important.”
The pins can be pre-ordered

co.nz, and are expected to arrive
from an overseas manufacturer
in about two weeks. McCarthy
said they would be shipped out
as soon as they arrived.
Paying our respects
ON SUNDAY and Monday we
took Vittoria to place flowers and
pay respect for those who were
killed on Friday.
People have lost friends, family,
parents, children, teammates and
colleagues.
Even if you did not know any of
those who were attacked in either
the Masjid Al Noor or Linwood
mosques, we’ve lost people who
were part of the city’s fabric of life.
People we saw on the street,
saw in the shops and played with
at the park, smiled at us as we
walked by. Some even shared
pleasantries with as we waited for
a coffee.
It will be hard to explain it to
Vittoria when one day she asks
me about what happened, that
people were murdered because of
their faith, a faith shared by some
in her own family.
But the city and the country’s
reaction has added to my pride in
raising Vittoria here.
Rather than politicise the event
or ignore the pain our Muslim
whānau are feeling, people got
straight on to helping, spreading
messages of love or working on
practical support for the affected
families.

consciousness out there that
addressing racism and the stain of
white supremacy in this country
is key to making sure horrific
events such as Friday’s terror
attack doesn’t happen again.

I’ll end on a note that,
hopefully, might put a smile on
your face, Vittoria has recently
achieved something of a life-goal.
Her first truly embarrassing story
to be retold on her 21st birthday.
While walking together in the
Botanic Gardens on Monday,
Laura noticed that Vittoria had
just picked something up and
shoved it in her mouth.
I never thought duck poo
would look like mushed grass, but
as I fished the dark green gunk
out of her mouth it looked just
like it.
Her face did not look as
disgusted at it should have.
So far both her stomach and
mine have managed to stand up
to it.
