He and his mother Joycelyn (right) at a wedding last year. • By Georgia O’Connor- Harding EVERY SHOW Aaron Boyce has performed in holds a piece of his heart. But his role as an old hippy rocker in a show celebrating British rock-band Queen will be one of the most poignant of his career. Last year, at about the same time as Boyce found out he had landed a leading role in Showbiz Christchurch’s production of We Will Rock You, his mother was given between 12 and 15 months to live. It was discovered in November, Boyce’s mother Joycelyn, 77, had a brain tumour. While the tumour has been removed, it is malignant meaning her only option is to have chemotherapy and radiation to keep her alive for a little longer, Boyce said. It means We Will Rock You could be the last show Mrs Boyce will ever see her son perform in. “Mum is the eternal optimist. She is very positive about it all. She knows there is no escaping what is happening . . . she is an incredible woman all round just by the mere fact she is trying her hardest to make sure us kids are keeping intact,” he said. He said his mother has been a Freddie Mercury fan for as long as he could remember and she is “absolutely ecstatic” to be going. The show tells the story of a group of Bohemians who struggle to restore the free exchange of thought, fashion and live music in a future where people think the same. Boyce said he had kept the subject of his mother’s illness to himself throughout rehearsals. But when she told him to “go for your life” and “lay it all out there”, it inspired him to talk about her. Boyce described her as one of the most selfless people he has ever met. “She has always embraced everyone . . . she has always been one of the most caring people you can find right to the point she is the one with cancer and she is still trying to support everyone else through it.” His mother and father Winton formerly owned the Governors Bay Wheatsheaf Tavern in the 1980s. “Everyone in the pub used to call her ‘Joycey Boycey’ or ‘Mumsie’ . . . everyone could come there and talk to her about her problems. She would always be there to listen.” Boyce said there would often be about 15 kids lining up on their doorstep on a Saturday looking for food. “If she was camping she would meet people . . . all of a sudden they would end up staying at our place for a month.” Boyce said he was a “late bloomer” as he didn’t properly start singing until he auditioned for a band called Bubble Men at 22-years-old. He went on to tour Europe which led to performing in rock musicals. •We Will Rock You opens March 29.
