FIRE CLAIMS LIFE
Ndlambe fire department slammed for ‘slow response’ to emergency
JON HOUZET
AN elderly woman
died after sustaining
burns in a fire at her
beachfront apartment at
Little Lilly on Sunday
night.
Neighbours and
surrounding community
members came to Lesley
Huxtable’s aid when the
fire started.
Kim Gardner, owner of
the nearby Spinning Reel
holiday accommodation,
said they first heard
screams and then saw
the fire at about 8pm.
“My husband Steven
phoned MultiSecurity,
and went down with my
son to help,” Gardner told
TotT. “I followed them to
see if I could help with
my nursing background.”
MultiSecurity control
room also received calls
from other residents and
in turn alerted the fire
department, Gardmed
and response officers to
attend to the scene.
“MultiSecurity was very
good – they were there
from the beginning. The
medical guys came
afterward. There was lots
of community help.”
According to the
MultiSecurity report, a
Gardmed ambulance
arrived half an hour after
the call went out, and the
fire department took an
hour to get there before
they extinguished the
blaze.
Gardmed treated
Huxtable at the scene
before taking her to Port
Alfred Hospital. On
Tuesday it was learned
that she had died as a
result of her injuries.
In a post on the
Spinning Reel Facebook
page on Monday, Gardner
said: “It’s a sad state of
affairs when it took nearly
an hour for our
emergency fire services
to find the fire at Little
Lilly. MultiSecruity and
medical side fantastic.”
Asked to respond to
criticism of the fire
depar tment’s response
time, municipal
spokesman Cecil
Mbolekwa said there was
confusion over where the
fire was, as fire control
had been told it was at
Flame Lilly.
He provided the fire
depar tment’s response:
“We received the call for
a fire at Flame Lilly and a
crew was dispatched with
two vehicles.
“On arrival there was
no sign of a fire at Flame
Lilly as was the arrival
report from Mr Naude in
charge of the fire crew.
“We enquired on our
emergency group and
MultiSecurity corrected
the address to be Little
Lilly, which is on the other
side of Flame Lilly.
“Mr Naude rerouted
there and experienced as
reported fuel system
problems with the Dennis
fire engine but proceeded
with the smaller vehicle
to the scene,” the fire
department statement
continued.
“They found the
security on scene and
ambulance service and
worked from a fire
hydrant on the Flame Lilly
premises to extinguish
the fire.
“An elderly lady
sustained burn wounds
on scene and was
conveyed to hospital by
ambulance,” the
department said.
“The cause of the fire
was suspected to be
smoking by the occupant
who was alone on the
premises at that time,
and the fire was confined
to her bedroom and
adjacent bathroom.”
CRIME BRIEFS
Just after 9am last Thursday, a
positive break-in was confirmed at
a shop in the MyPond Centre, Van
der Riet Street. MultiSecurity and
SAPS were informed and attended
the scene.
Those responsible for the
break-in had gained entry by
breaking a window at the bottom
at the left-hand side of the door.
An undisclosed amount of cash
was taken from the cash register.
The alarm at the premises was on.
At about 4.40pm on Friday
March 16 a break-in at a home in
Swan Lane was reported.
The report was that there had
been a break-in at the premises
the previous evening, but there
was only noticed that items were
missing in the house the following
morning.
The alarm at the premise was
not on.
SAPS was called to attend to a
case of stolen copper pipes at
around 7.30am on Monday from
Woodpecker Installation in Station
Hill.
Apparently the pipes were
stolen from the roof of the
premises next to the workshop
At 7.20am on Monday, a report
was received from the owner of a
home on Southwell Road that a
gas bottle had been stolen from
the rear of the premises.
At 1pm on Monday, a garage
door a premises on Hewson Lane
was spotted partially opened.
After fetching keys, evidence of a
break-in was discovered.
The perpetrator had removed
the padlock by the garage door.
A jeep in the garage had the
passenger’s side window
smashed and the sound system
stolen from the vehicle.
Mopping up town in
Stenden clean-up
Community unites to clear unsightly rubbish
N TO M B E N TS H A
MSUTU
Afew residents
braved the heat
on Sunday to
join a clean-up
organised by members
of Stenden South
Africa’s community
development club,
Commuden.
The clean-up started
at 9am and the aim was
to pick up trash until
12pm. Among those
who helped, were Port
Alfred High School
pupils and parents, and
some Stenden st u d e n t s .
Club project manager
Ashley Miller said they
simply had become
tired of seeing so much
trash around the CBD
and other areas around
Port Alfred.
“We want people to
be hands-on in keeping
our town clean, we
need to work together
because there is too
much trash around.
“ It doesn’t look like it
when you looking from
far, but if you look
closely enough then we
can see the trash,”
Miller said.
“We decided to focus
on the areas around the
civic centre, the taxi
rank at the back of Pick
n Pay, and there by KFC
if people can go that
fa r, ” she said.
“We want to try and
do this more often,
because if we want our
town to be clean then
we also have to take
par t.”
Club vice-president
Danielle Roux said they
prepared a table with
music and sold
boerewors rolls in the
hope of attracting more
people.
After the clean-up
was finished, they had
about 20 bags of trash
from the areas they had
targeted to clean up.
“We would like to
thank those who made
the time to come and
help us
“We would also like
to thank the people who
sponsored us, such as
Buco and Stenden, and
we would also like to
thank the municipality
for being so helpful,”
Roux said.

Tribute to Talk of the
Town writer Bob Ford
Port Alfred resident Bob Ford,
who has been a contributing
writer for Talk of the Town for
the past 18 months, died
suddenly in the early hours of
Monday morning.
Ford, well known in bowls circles,
had a past career in journalism
many years ago, and offered his
services as a writer for what he
jokingly referred to as “beer
money”. In those 18 months, he
revealed his excellence as a listener
to people’s stories, finding an array
of people with interesting careers
and backgrounds which we might
be poorer for not having known
about. He was also a skilled writer
and required very little editing.
Ford provided the following story
of his own life six months ago, for
when we might need it. He wrote it
in the first person so we have
adjusted it when necessary.
Ford first spoke isiXhosa before
English while growing up on a farm
in the Sterkstroom district. Little did
he know that he would become
mayor of Fort Beaufort in later life.
“My early recollections on this
Earth go way back to the mid-1940s
when my brother Peter and I started
our lives with our parents on
Bellevue Farm in the Sterkstroom
district just north of Queenstown
[Komani]. Looking back today on
those years they were, without
doubt, probably our happiest,
though we were not aware of this at
the time,” he said.
Fo r d ’s parents had both lived
through the tough years of the great
depression, resulting in the family
living a very conservative life. “We
grew up the way children should
and did in those years,” he said.
“Without us realising it, they were
BOB FORD
tough, but happy simple years.
“Now, many years later, when the
mood prevails and I speak about
them to my own son and
grandchildren, it becomes obvious
that the thoughts going through
their minds is one of disbelief that
the ‘old man’ has definitely lost it,”
he said.
“As was the case with most
children growing up on farms in
those days we had African ‘nanny’
who looked after us during the days
when we spent all our time playing
outside and only went indoors at
meal times. The result was that it
was natural that our friends were
the sons whose fathers were
employed on the farm. It was also
natural because of this that the first
language we spoke was Xhosa and
we would jabber away while
p l ay i n g , ” he recalled.
“Meal times were interesting in
that our father could not speak the
African language, but our mother
could. This resulted in conversations
taking place in Xhosa and mom
having to translate to our father
when we spoke to him and vice
versa. This went on for some time
until we learnt to speak English.”
The brothers spent their time
amusing themselves with their
friends in the sunshine, when shoes
were just not a necessary item of
clothing such as a hat.
“Our feet became like leather and
we would think nothing of walking
anywhere and everywhere. On those
occasions when our parents went
visiting their friends on
neighbouring farms on a Sunday,
the hours spent there were agony in
a pair of shoes that had not had the
opportunity of being worn in,” Fo r d
said.
Toys were a luxury and were few
and far between. So the boys made
their own.
“I remember well retrieving
sardine tins and spent hours
making these into little wagons
complete with a ‘disselboom’
(shaft). The axles were made out of
number 8 wire and the wheels
comprised of discarded wooden
cotton reels from my mother, sawn
in half,” he said.
The dreaded day of having to go
to school arrived after a few years.
“Instead of it being an exciting time
as it is for children of today, this
turned out to be a nightmare. I was
taken from the secluded sheltered
life I was accustomed to and
dumped at the local John Vorster
High School where there were
hundreds of children running
around,” Ford said.
With Sterkstroom being a
predominantly Afrikaans area the
school catered for English speaking
scholars in a single classroom from
Grade 1 to Grade 7.

Although the farm was a mere
5km from town, Ford’s parents
considered it too expensive to take
him to town every day, so he
became a weekly boarder with one
of the town’s residents.
Fo r d ’s father eventually sold the
farm and the family moved to
nearby Queenstown, where they
boys attended Queen’s College for a
few years.
But as their father had attended
Grey High School in Port Elizabeth,
he was determined that his boys
would do the same.
“And so it was in 1958 that we
were packed off to Port Elizabeth
and literally dumped there and had
to fend for ourselves. Given our
sheltered upbringing up to that
stage, it was tough in the boarding
house and the homesickness was
something you just had to handle,”
Ford said.
However, once they eventually
settled into their new surroundings
the following years proved to be
happy, with many new experiences.
“I was fortunate enough to play in
the first cricket XI for a few years
and had the honour of playing
alongside the great Graeme Pollock.
We played in the Port Elizabeth
senior men’s league, which was
tough as we played against
seasoned provincial players and a
few Springboks. And so it was a
proud moment for all of us when we
won this league in 1961 for the first
time in the history of Port Elizabeth
c r i c ke t . ”
After school and a stint in the
army, Ford worked in Queenstown
and Port Elizabeth before he bought
his own business in Fort Beaufort.
During his 20-odd years in the town,
he served on the local council for
eight years and was
elected mayor for two of
these.
“Looking back on all
these years, I would do it
all again with some minor
changes,” he concluded.
WATER STORAGE AND
PURIFICATION SOLUTIONS
Bathurst Show
will be a bright
beacon of fun
ROB KNOWLES
With just over two
weeks to go,
anticipation of the
biggest agricultural
event in the Eastern
Cape is building, but
concerns have been
expressed about the
impact of load-shedding
on the Bathurst Show
which will run from
April 5 to 7.
Bathurst Agricultural
Society (BAS) chair
Danny Wepener has
organised sufficient
electrical power to keep
at least essential
services at the show
operational even if
load-shedding is
experienced over the
weekend of the show.
“BAS would like to
reassure visitors that
electricity will be
available to power
lights and other
important services at
the show irrespective of
whether Eskom cut the
p o w e r, ” said Wepener.
He also mentioned
the potential for more
protests in the area as
Nolukhanyo residents
remain unhappy with
the lack of importance
the municipality
appears to be attaching
to their problems with
water and housing.
NO WATER? NO ELECTRICITY? NO PROBLEM!
“We know the
majority of Bathurst
residents don’t want the
rioting we have seen in
the past as they realise
it will only cost them
money in the long run.
But there are some
radical elements and
we want to ensure the
safety of our visitors so
we are employing
additional security for
the duration of the
s h o w, ” he commented.
This will be the 111th
Bathurst Agricultural
Show and 2019’s theme
is “Save the Planet from
P l a st i c ”.
The theme of 2018
was, “Eaten Today?
Thank a Farmer”, which
had a strong impact in
recognising the critical
importance of farmers.
The aim in 2019 is to
reduce or even
eliminate the
proliferation of
single-use plastics for
wrapping that ends up
at the landfills, or worse
in streams and rivers,
choking wildlife and
destroying the
environment.
As usual, the show
will be focused on
agricultural activities
and rural hobbies and
p a st i m e s .
As far as farming is
concerned, there will be
cattle, sheep, pigs,
fowls and many other
animals to see at the
show and, as usual, the
kids can get to hug a
piglet or look at the
striking and unusual
assortment of fowls, or
witness a sheep
shearing demonstration.
One would also be
able to view artwork at
the show, ranging from
cake decoration to fine
art paintings or see a
blacksmith at work at
the forge.
And don’t forget the
equestrian events, one
of the most popular
aspects of the Bathurst
Show, with dressage,
show jumping and
more.
Local and national
companies, schools, car
dealerships and others
will have stands at the
show and demonstrate
their products and
services, and there will
be a cattle auction with
top-quality livestock, K9
dog unit
demonstrations, classic
cars and a whole lot
more fun at the show.
Added to this, there
are a few events that
have also proved
popular at previous
shows.
This includes a
cook-off where local
chefs receive a box of
ingredients and have to
design, cook and serve
their best dishes using
the products supplied.
Best of all, when
finished, spectators get
to sample the dishes.
Make sure you don’t
miss the ride-on
lawnmower races
where, unlike in 2018,
Wepener has promised
to at least finish his
race on the same day
as the rest of the
competitors.
There will also be a
fun fair and carnival
rides, dancing displays,
food stalls, pubs and
live entertainment.
Readers talk about
improving efficiency
in state departments
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
For our latest Facebook
question we asked our readers,
what they think should be done
to improve efficiency in
government departments.
Bram Coetzee s u g g e st e d they
need to be thinned from the
top.
Angela Liesenberg said:
“Change the entire
government.”
Urshi Behrens Wiblin said:
“Teaching communication and
customer relations skills.”
Angi Bezuidenhout said:
“Retrench all without
compensation. If they need
their jobs back, motivation
letters and upskilling needs to
occur at their own costs.”
Wendy Williams said it would
be hard to install some
commitment to service when
the general attitude is that they
couldn’t care less.
Loraine Briggs Campbell
Loader suggested government
employees need training in
skills, education, training for
the job, respect, knowledge of
the different languages in SA,
and telephone etiquette.
Sue Gordon said: “For starters,
thin down the number of
employees, then ensure they
are properly trained for the jobs
they do. Thirdly, ensure they
have superiors who evaluate
their productivity. Just about
any job can be broken down
into quantifiable goals (eg, “my
daily target is to serve x
number of the public
satisfactorily today”).
Terri Elkonin Harrewyn said:
“Pay them minimum wages and
give them their benefits and
bonuses at the end of their
term according to what they
have achieved.”
Robyn Timm Taylor said they
need consequence
management enforced at all
levels.
Dawn Hains said: “Employ the
correct person with the correct
qualifications for the position,
and forget about quotas, etc.
We need effective efficient
government employees.”
Luke Strugnell said the
government need to privatise
as much as possible and shrink
government to as small as
possible.
Ian Jamieson said a person
should be paid per job
completed.
“Let public servants only get
paid for time effectively spent
in achieving a goal that
benefits everyone, not an
individual or a party.”
Marius van Deventer said:
“Wow, you are now opening a
big can of worms!! But starting
with people who are dedicated
to ‘The People’ and not just a
salary and holding individuals
accountable. Problem is ‘if the
bosses can go home at 2pm,
why can’t I?’ Is the norm.”
Lyn Lapham said: “Fire the
whole lot of them and elect
people who are willing to work
for us. People, who care, are
interested and whose minds are
not so fully occupied with the
salary that they get at the end
of the month.”
Russell Deutschmann agreed.
“Stop the ‘boetie boetie’ s y st e m
of employment and open to all
races, not just blacks.
Production bonuses to be
agreed by the affected people,
the public paying taxes and not
the free grant-getting people,”
he added.
Amanda du Toit said: “Get rid
of BEE and employ people who
are properly qualified to do a
job. Put performance-based
increases in place with
supervisors or managers who
are committed to service
delivery. If people don't do their
jobs, get rid of them.”
Roy Smith agreed.
John David Burman disagreed,
saying that is not possible at
present.
Colleen Dennis: “Agree totally
with Amanda, also stop
employing family members who
are not qualified for the
position being offered and
retire those who reach the age
of retirement. Also stop paying
people who are on suspension,
as well as their legal fees. if
someone has done wrong, fire
them.”
HOW IT WORKS
If you are suffering from colds and flu or secondary bacteriological infections of the nose,
throat, lungs and ears, using Linctagon for support makes more than just sense.
NATURAL ANTIBIOTIC ACTION
The actives in Linctagon’s plant base display both anti-bacteriological and bacteriostatic
properties. This fact makes Linctagon an obvious first line of defence against
bacteriological respiratory infections associated with conditions such as sinusitis, ear
infections, tonsillitis and bronchitis.
GETTING OVER COLDS AND FLU
In addition research studies in the early 2000’s indicate that Linctagon’s actives also assist
the body to get over colds and flu quicker through its active support of the immune system.
Linctagon users generally report that complaints associated with colds and respiratory
infections (like coughing, a sore throat and runny nose) clear up fairly fast.
OPINION
Fighting
fire with
a slow
response
Ndlambe fire department has received
flak before for slow response times
to a fire that had been reported to
them.
One of these was the Kenton bakery fire
in June 2018 where the community came
together to fight the blaze, while they were
waiting for the fire department to arrive.
The fire truck was apparently stuck at a
stop-go on the R72 before it could even
leave Port Alfred. This was before the new
emergency services response centre at
Bushman’s River was finally ready, with its
own fire tenders to respond to
emergencies on the west side of Ndlambe.
On another occasion in 2018, the fire
tender took an hour to arrive at a fire at an
RDP house in Thornhill, which is just down
the drag from the Port Alfred fire station
on the R67!
If it wasn’t for community members
coming together to fight the fire and
rescue the man inside the house, it might
have been much worse. They fetched
buckets of water and extinguished the
blaze before the fire truck arrived. As it is,
the man lost all his possessions to the
flames, but the structure was saved.
The criticism levelled at the fire
department may have been warranted, but
we must take into account other factors
which also enter the equation, especially
in the fire that claimed a life at Little Lilly
this week.
A response time of an hour to reach a
fire at Little Lilly is unacceptable on the
face of it. Although the fire engine getting
there sooner would not have saved the life
of the person who died – she had already
suffered burns – there was an imminent
danger of the fire spreading to adjoining
apar tments.
But Ndlambe fire department offered
reasons for the delays which should be
taken into consideration.
First, they said they were told the
location of the fire was Flame Lilly, another
apartment complex, although
neighbouring Little Lilly. If they
approached Flame Lilly from West Beach
Drive, it is possible they would have seen
no sign of the fire as Flame Lilly is a huge
building and obstructs views.
Then, after getting the right address, the
department reported their Dennis fire
truck had fuel system problems, so they
proceeded to the scene with just their
smaller fire response vehicle and used a
nearby hydrant to douse the blaze.
This is a more worrying factor, as it
reveals a problem surfaced only when the
Dennis was being used. It should have
been picked up in regular maintenance.
We hope the fire department sorts these
issues out.
Many know
where the
druglords are
By all accounts, according
to the crime briefs in Talk
of the Town and reports on
WhatsApp groups, crime
appears to be on the
increase in Port Alfred and
surrounding areas.
No doubt, a small
portion of the crime is
related to poverty and
desperate folk are forced
to steal. However, I would
suggest that the majority
of crime committed is
drug-related. As per crime
briefs in Talk of the Town
on February 28 it is
obvious that the most
sought-after items are cell
phones, laptops, jewellery
and cash. Theft of copper
piping appears to be on
the up. All these
above-mentioned items
can be easily disposed of
for purpose of buying
drugs. What really is of
major concern to me – and
many like-minded people
in Port Alfred and
surrounding areas – is that
we citizens know who the
druglords are. Where they
live and their modus
operandi are all
well-known to the ordinary
citizens of this town.
We citizens are reluctant
to offer the above
information to the relevant
officials in authority
because it is alleged that
some of these officials
might be on the druglords’
payroll – and are in
cahoots with them.
Getting rid of the
druglords will definitely
have an impact on
reducing crime in this
area. Why must the
majority of citizens, who
are law-abiding, be forced
to live like prisoners in
their homes?
In conclusion, it would
be appreciated if, via Talk
of the Town, we could get
an official response from
the relevant officials, as to
whether any arrests of
drug-dealers have been
made. If not, why not,
because like I have
mentioned, many citizens
know who the druglords
are and where they
operate from. Surely this
should be common
knowledge to SAPS?.
I certainly will not be
holding my breath waiting
for a response.
Snakes alive! Thanks to
SNAKE HANDLER: Richard Mavikane from Ndlambe Nature
Conservation successfully retrieved a puffadder from a
Port Alfred resident’s garden
A big thank you to
Richard Mavikane from
Ndlambe Nature
Conservation for his
dedication and
professional service
when I found a rather
large puffadder in our
front garden recently.
He came over and
secured the little (?)
guy and all went well.
The snake is safe, and
so are we!
Another big thanks to
Michelle from Sky
Alarms for giving me
Richard's cellphone
n u m b e r.
After several
unsuccessful phone
calls trying to find a
professional snake
catcher, I phoned Sky
Alarms and Michelle
could help me.
It would help a lot of
people if the names and
telephone numbers of
the snake catchers of
nature conservation
could be included in the
emergency numbers in
TotT, especially where
there is any danger to
the snakes or the
members and pets of
the household.
Too many snakes are
killed because people
do not know how to
handle the situation.
ANNETJIE ROGERS
Licensing a total nightmare
It is not difficult to work out
why there are so many
complaints around the lack of
service from the staff at the
licensing department in Port
Alfred.
One has only to visit the
office on any day to experience
the overcrowding. You will see
20 to 30 people crammed into
a space of not more than 25m²,
standing for one hour or more
waiting to be attended to.
There will be no staff
member ever to answer queries
or assist in any way.
There are no designated
areas informing the public
where to queue.
Under these intolerable and
unhygienic conditions it is no
wonder the public complain.
I cannot believe that any
councillor has ever experienced
the shocking conditions
existing there.
If nobody else, then the DA
should fight hard to radically
improve the situation at this
depar tment.
It must be housed in a much
larger premises and the three
sections – driver’s licences,
learner’s licences and motor
vehicle licences – must be
separated for better efficiency.
Here’s hoping that something
will be done and the matter will
not be discussed at length and
left on the back burner.
Unsung heroes deserve society’s recognition
THINK
ABOUT IT
... with Roy Hewett
society have developed systems which
produce heroes who enjoy immense
fame and, often, totally
disproportionate wealth.
Clever marketers and big business
have long been aware of man’s innate
need for entertainment and heroes . . .
and they have exploited this to
generate vast sums of money.
Sportsmen, singers and musicians
who have talent, but also fortuitous
timing and powerful publicity backing,
often achieve “hero worship” st at u s .
An examination of the top earners in
society will show clearly how many of
these “sung” heroes feature
prominently and highlight their almost
obscene wealth. The achievements and
fame that generally determine heroes
in the conventional sense ... . do they
measure up to the unsung heroes who
miss the glare of attention and mass
appeal? Does society apportion a fair
measure of recognition to the
anonymous philanthropist or the “Good
Samaritan” who helps a person in
dist ress?
In the words of Daniel J. Boorstin: “In
our world of big names, curiously, our
true heroes tend to be anonymous. In
this life of illusion and quasi-illusion,
the person of solid virtues who can be
admired for something more
substantial than his well-knownness
often proves to be the unsung hero: the
teacher, the nurse, the mother, the
honest cop, the hard worker at lonely,
underpaid, unpublicised jobs.”
Consider the nature-conscious beach
visitor who regularly and energetically
removes plastic and other damaging
debris in a heroic service to our planet.
What of the highly-skilled and
successful businessman who leaves the
comforts of his urban life to work for
the upliftment of remote rural
settlements? And the individuals who
sponsor or mentor the less privileged?
Those who campaign and fight for
river, forest and fauna preservation are
true heroes.
Konica Annan put it well: “These
often unsung heroes understand . . that
poverty, disease and famine are just as
deadly and destructive as earthquakes,
hurricanes and tsunamis. Individuals . .
. are taking on these challenges in their
communities, volunteering to make a
difference. They remain the true
champions of our work towards the
Millennium Development Goals.”
Unsung heroes arguably deserve
recognition in equal measure. .
While specific talent, skill and some
luck often determine the fortunes of
conventional heroes, the unsung heroes
BUSINESSFORUM
Catch up with what’s happening on the PA business front
What to do in tough economic climate
We ’ve all heard the saying, “It’s time
in the market, not timing the market,
that counts”, but what does this
mean in practical terms and how
does timing the market affect your
i n v e st m e n t s ?
Human emotions
Sanlam financial adviser Sticks
Stiglingh said humans are emotional
beings and we work hard to earn
our money. Naturally, volatile
markets can cause panic, especially
when we see the value of our
investments falling. But this is not
the time to panic nor the time to
make emotional decisions.
No one can be certain about what
markets will do in the future or what
returns will be like for various asset
classes (property, equity, bonds and
cash), but what one can be certain
of is that volatility is perennial.
In these uncertain times, investors
are faced with a very important
decision – whether to stay invested
in the markets and bear the brunt of
the tough economic climate, or
whether to switch to cash.
Market timing is practically
impossible
Stiglingh said that according to
Glacier by Sanlam, one should
remember that cash diminishes an
i n v e st o r ’s purchasing power once
taxes and inflation are taken into
account.
Also, investors wanting to switch
their investments to cash will need
to get the market timing right –
something not even investment
professionals can claim to get right
all of the time.
When trying to time the market,
the investor has to be correct twice
? once when to switch into cash,
and then again when to switch back
into growth assets.
Getting it wrong could cost you
Because it’s practically impossible
to predict when to switch, it is
highly likely that investors will miss
some of the best days in the market.
Missing even a few of the best days
could have a lasting impact on your
portfolio returns.
Growth assets outperform over
the long term
Figures from Glacier’s research
team show that SA cash has only
outperformed SA equity and SA
bonds once over the period 2001 to
2018.
What should investors do?
ý Don’t try to time the market.
ý Don’t make emotional decisions
based on short-term uncertainty.
ý Remember that, on average,
growth assets will provide a better
return over the long term (a
minimum of five years, ideally 10).
ý Understand your long-term
investment plan … and stick to it.
ý Be disciplined and stay
i n v e st e d .
ý Enlist the advice and
assistance of a licensed financial
adviser to co-create an investment
plan that is underpinned by your
financial needs and risk appetite.
Water storage solutions
Water is unfortunately still thought of today as an
abundant, renewable resource to be captured and
used without regard to environmental consequences.
That notion needs to be replaced with the
understanding that water isn’t renewable and it
needs to be allocated carefully and wisely.
Water challenges in South Africa specifically relate
to issues such as safe food provision, sufficient
sources of clean potable water, health and a
sustainable environment.
Predictions say that South Africa will run out of
water by 2020, and it needs to be ensured that the
What is
happening in the
property market?
The Bureau for Economic Research and Lightstone
Properties have recently brought out research on
business in general and on the property market, which
makes interesting reading.
Although I am not an economist I am interested in
trying to understand economic research reports which
take the emotion out of markets and focus on what is
actually happening in the various markets.
Having said this, the Bureau for Economic Research
does base their findings on surveys they carry out and
these are completed by people who may have some
emotional bias.
In summary the news is:
1. Business confidence is down but not as much as it
was in the last quarter;
2. Rental growth is slow;
3. While the volume of sales in the Eastern Cape have
increased at 10.4% sales values have only increased by
6.5% which would indicate that house prices are
declining;
4. Building plans passed this quarter have declined,
and on a more positive note;
5. The CPI (inflation index) is under control at around
5%.
These statistics are general and do not apply uniformly
in all markets. Our experience is that in Grahamstown the
market is particularly weak as a result of a failing
municipality. In Port Alfred we are seeing increased
activity but without much movement in prices. This
surprises me as Port Alfred has so many attractions: the
sea, the river, a flying school, marina and golf course just
to mention a few. If I was a betting man I would say that
Port Alfred offers the best value in the region! Kenton
seems to be bucking the trend with prices in desired
areas reaching record heights and there is a lot of
building activity. Boesmansriviermond, Boknes, Cannon
Rocks and Alexandria are also showing growth.
Naturally at election time we are all uncertain of how
the election will impact on our lives. I must say I have a
very good feeling about these elections and think that
while we may have a bumpy road leading up to the
elections and after them while parties jockey for coalition
positions, this will be the start of a new and positive era
for our country.
Remember I am an optimist! I would love to hear your
views. Please contact me on simon.oliver@seeff.com or
082-653-5643. I look forward to hearing from you.
necessary systems are in place to recycle and re-use
our water resources, by keeping our drinking water
clean and by sustainably harvesting as much water
as possible.
This requires technology, innovation and most
importantly human capacity – a blue revolution is
needed which drives the development of these
requirements and further execution to ensure clean,
affordable and quality water provision and sanitation.
How the
has changed
SERENDIPITY
... with Bev Young
There are many elderly
folks who say they
remember the old
beach cafe and
changing rooms at
West Beach.
There is certainly no
resemblance now. The
photo this week was
from about the 1940s
m ay b e .
The entire area has
changed in structure
to suit modern usage.
I remember when I
came to live here,
there was a concrete
composition, nearer to
the right hand side
bank, which I was
told, had once been
the customs house.
Another structure
that has changed is
the stone wall to hold
off the sea sand.
There are
photographs in the
museum, showing a
very steep sand bank.
Serenity is one year old
As we celebrate our
first birthday, we
find ourselves
looking back at
some of our
highlights, but also
looking forward at
what we hope to
achieve in the
future.
Some of our highlights have been
continually growing our client base,
building awareness through our social
media platforms and getting to know our
community through various events such as
the Stenden open evening, Mr and Miss
Port Alfred at the Port Alfred High School
carnival and joining Talk of the Town for
their Tittle Tattle broadcast at the robots –
what fun!
While we’re grateful for the success of
the past year, including winning the
Dermalogica Top Business 2018, we also
want to make sure that we keep evolving
and bringing our clients new innovations.
This week we introduce you to the
iontopherisis machine – something we are
super excited to introduce our clients to,
particularly those who are keen on
optimizing the full benefits of their facial
treatments. This machine penetrates
ionzymes into the dermal layers of the skin,
targeting the client’s specific concerns. The
more effective results.
Turn your Dermalogica Pro-skin
treatment into something extraordinary by
incorporating the iontopherisis machine.
Bring this article in when you come to
book for your Dermalogica Pro-skin
treatment and we’ll incorporate the
iontopherisis machine free of charge.
While 10-20% of your skin’s ageing
process is dependent on genetics, it’s the
external factors that really make the
difference. Now, similarly, while this a
family business, the success thereof has not
all been dependent on genetics. It has
taken grit, passion, team spirit and a whole
lot of love from all those around us – so
thank you, the Port Alfred community for
supporting Serenity through our first year.
Our birthday wish is to keep delivering a
service of high quality within a relaxing and
inviting environment to all of you.
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
HAPPY Human Rights Day! Thursday is a
national holiday and, with all the
load-shedding we are experiencing we
probably all need to take a rest.
Unfortunately, many companies have been
dramatically affected by the lack of power
and we extend our sympathies to anyone
whose business is suffering or employees
who may find themselves out of work or
without pay because their company cannot
continue to operate.
TO begin, the first of four rounds in the King
of the Kowie surfing competition is happening
at East Beach today (Thursday) from 8am
until the afternoon. As it is likely there will be
more load-shedding East Beach sounds like it
could be the place to be. However, although
we still need it, let’s hope the rain holds off so
that this round can be completed.
THE Lower Albany Historical Society is also
meeting today for its AGM at Settlers Park
from 10am. After the AGM there will be a talk
by professor Pat Irwin titled "The Battle of
Grahamstown, April 22 1819". The topic is
particularly relevant since we are
approaching the 200th anniversary of the
bat tle.
THE Port Alfred Art Club will be meeting at
the Bob McKenzie gallery on Wharf Street on
Saturday where McKenzie will speak about
his artwork and answer questions. The
meeting will begin at the gallery at 10am and
visitors are welcome.
IF you are in the Makhanda area on Saturday,
why not attend the ‘Commemoration of
African Heroes and Heroines’, to be held at
the Princess Zila Lobengula Museum, Fingo
Village, Makhanda? The start time for the
event is 11am, and it will end at 2pm.
EVEN President Cyril Ramaphosa says Eskom
load-shedding is a crisis for the country, but
recognition of the fact does little to alleviate
the problem. Many companies are finding it
difficult to keep their heads above water
during this highly stressful time. Current
estimates are that each day of Stage 4 load
shedding costs the country R4-billion (a
billion is 1,000 million – a very large amount).
With Eskom currently in debt to the tune of
R400-billion, what was the world’s third
Kowie Striders time trial – every Tuesday at 5.30pm at
largest power utility has been plundered by
government and their allies in the private
sector and is now technically bankrupt. The
current situation is untenable and could
ultimately lead to a total nationwide
shutdown with horrific consequences to the
South Africa economy. Nuclear power from
Russia was originally proposed but has been
shown to be entirely non-viable although
some ministers don’t seem to understand and
are still advocating nuclear as the solution to
the problem. Unions are anxious that jobs will
be lost if power generation is privatised. But
what if Eskom collapses? How many jobs will
be lost then? And blaming the situation on
the age of the current infrastructure is just a
smokescreen. The government led by the ANC
has “owned” this infrastructure for the last 25
years, so surely it was their job to maintain
and build new power stations (which was
halted by the Mbeki administration in the late
1990s). And the two they have built since
then (Medupi and Kusile) are complete
failures and still costing millions each day
they are not in operation.
Workshop and the 109th anniversary of the
ACCORDING to the South African debt clock
(a real-time update of the state of the South
African accumulated debt) the current
national debt is just over R3 trillion (US$210
billion). And Eskom’s R400 billion debt, as
well as the debt of other SEOs (SAA, Transnet,
SAPO and others) are not included in this
figure. With Moody’s (the only ratings agency
that still holds South Africa above the Junk
Status barrier) about to give its opinion it is
unlikely that their rating will be favourable. If
we drop to non-investment level we will see
even more jobs lost and industry closing shop
and moving to somewhere where they can get
a good return on their investment. At the time
of going to press, the Rand was trading at
R14.39 to the Dollar (R11.95), R19.12 to the
Pound (R16.74) and R16.34 to the Euro
(R14.67). Commodities were trading with Gold
at $1,308.10 per fine ounce ($1,311.61),
Platinum is at $835.05 per ounce ($956.40)
and Brent Crude Oil at $68.12 per barrel
Pam Golding celebrates milestone
PA team
enjoy 17
years of
success
The last 17 years have
been quite a
tumultuous time in
the South African
property market, but
Pam Golding has
weathered the storms it
faced along the way and
has come out far
stronger than before.
The success of a
business is not
measured when times
are good but rather
when the environment
changes and times get
tough.
The property boom
between 2004 and 2007
which developers,
builders and estate
agents enjoyed, was
followed by a collapse
resulting in extreme
market changes and
economic downturn.
Through the Meyers’
forward thinking
leadership, Pam Golding
withstood the challenges
and remains one of Port
Alfred’s top Industry
leaders.
The franchise has
recently taken over the
Jawitz (formerly Unique)
Properties offices, from
Susan McLellan in the
CBD which, now under
the leadership of Andrew
Meyer, will look after the
Port Alfred rental
property market.
“The rental market is
showing enormous
growth in the Port Alfred
area,” commented
A n d r e w.
“The purchase of the
rental portfolio from
Susan will undoubtedly
THE PROPERTY TEAM: Pam Golding Properties is celebrating 17 years in Port Alfred under the
leadership of Isobel Meyer and her husband Andrew. Isobel also celebrates her 20 year milestone in
the business. Pictured from left are Rita de Sousa, Kelly de Sousa, Lauren Meyer, Margie Siegers,
bring about even further
growth in the future,
having already increased
the size of our rental
pool monumentally.”
Looking after
hundreds of rental
properties on behalf of
their owners, Pam
Golding is proud to be
the biggest rental
property agent in the
area.
Having originally
owned a hardware store
in the CBD which
provided plumbing and
other tools and
equipment to the
construction industry,
Andrew and Isobel
Meyer were afforded a
wide range of industry
experience before their
venture with Pam
Golding Properties
began.
When they were
forced to close their
shop down due to the
liquidation of one of
their biggest builder
clients, Isobel sought an
opportunity in real
estate with then Ingrid
Ilgner Estates, where she
got to work alongside
Susan McLellan as an
agent.
Already familiar with
the industry and
property speculation due
to her father being one
of the three developers
of the Royal Alfred
Marina, this was the
point at which Isobel
realised her passion.
“I can remember the
very year my mom
became a real estate
agent,” said her
daughter, Lauren, who
works alongside her
mom today.
“Things changed, and
not just because we
moved house so many
times. There is no doubt
that the real estate
industry has its
challenges, but if it was
meant for anyone it was
meant for her.”
In 2000, her second
year as an agent, Isobel
was awarded as the top
agent in the Eastern
Cape and Garden Route
regions for having
earned the highest
negotiated commission
value, the highest total
sales value and the
highest total number of
units sold. She was
awarded GoldClub status
“At Pam Golding Port
Alfred we look forward to
a future of building new
independent award).
ý In 2004 her agency
was a regional winner
and national finalist for
the award of excellence
in the category franchise
of the year (awarded by
the Independent
Franchise Association of
South Africa across all
national franchise
outlets including Wimpy,
Vodashop among
ot h e r s ) .
ý In 2005-2006 she
was awarded the
National Franchisee of
the Year and won the
Pam Golding Properties
Regional Office of the
Year for most units sold.
ý In 2001, 2002, 2007
and 2008, she took
home the Pam Golding
Properties award for
marketing excellence.
ý In 2013, she won
the award for most
improved office in the
Eastern Cape and
Garden Route Regions.
Of late her franchise
has been awarded the
Pam Golding Properties
and Payprop award for
the highest percentage
rental growth year on
year for 2017. Her agents
have also done
exceptionally well over
the years, winning
numerous individual
awards under her
leadership.
Now, 17 years later,
Pam Golding Port Alfred
handles property
transactions of all kinds
with a highly qualified
agent complement.
Pam Golding herself
said: “It’s so little mortar
and all about the people,
“At Pam Golding Port
Alfred we look forward to
building long lasting
relationships centred
around loyalty and
excellent customer
service. As industry
leaders, we look forward
to developing our brand,
building market share
and maintaining existing
client relationships. Our
industry is about
understanding, it is
about compassion and it
is about having empathy.
Above all, it is about
putting the needs of
others before our own,”
said Isobel.
“As an agent myself
t o d ay, ” said Lauren, “I
am incredibly proud to
be a part of the Pam
Golding Properties Port
Alfred team under the
leadership of my mom.
While the industry does
have its challenges, it is
exceptionally rewarding,
working with people and
helping them find their
home.
“ It all starts with a
passion for people; that
is what we’re all about.”
Fascinating
insight in the
history of Unisa
Book review: Unisa, 1873 to
2018
ROB KNOWLES
Although the subject
matter might seem a
little dry, this book is a
fascinating insight into
the ever changing South
African political environment
and how this affected the
ability of the University of
South Africa (Unisa) to provide
quality education to its
students throughout its 145
year history.
I had initially approached
reading this book as I would a
textbook. However, even before
I had completed the first
chapter my opinion had
changed.
The history of Unisa is a
fascinating and very detailed
history of the university from
its earliest beginnings as the
University of the Cape of Good
Hope.
In the first place it was a
political football with business
magnate Cecil John Rhodes
advocating that the institution
remain an English medium
university and the Afrikaners
advocating for a Dutch
medium university in order to
keep their language alive.
Of course, over such a large
and politically charged period
in the history of the country,
NOTICE NUMBER: 63/2019
Unisa was used by the ruling
political party of the time and
was encouraged and even
forced to toe the line with
official policy but, through it all
Unisa was largely responsible
as the main examination
authority and administrated
examinations carried out at its
satellite colleges such as
Rhodes University College
(RUC), Grey University College
(GUC), Transvaal University
College (TUC) and Huguenot
University College (HUC) and
several other institutions, as
well as administration of
school examinations for
several schools.
Unisa began its life in the
Cape Colony and was named
University of the Cape of Good
ADV. R. DUMEZWENI
MUNICIPAL MANAGER
Hope (UCOGH) when it was
founded in 1873, and changed
its name to the University of
South Africa (Unisa) when it
moved from the Cape to
Pretoria just over 100 years
ago, in 1918.
It was forced to continuously
modify its operation based
upon the political influences of
the time. There was a constant
battle for control of the
universit y’s complex system of
convocation, senate and
administration throughout its
history with regard to its
educational, political and
language policies, with the
Broderbund exerting influence
along the pressures of other
external forces.
Sometimes Unisa conceded
to demands, sometimes it
stood in support of its own
principles and sometimes it
simply capitulated to the
demands of the time. However
it was, at the same time,
responsible for advocating the
education of women, the study
of art and music.
However, it is clear that
Unisa has played a major part
in the educational history of
South Africa and its influence
of education throughout the
African continent. It is
estimated that two out of every
10 people registered for
degrees in South Africa are
Unisa students.
Keeping the thrill of
vintage cars alive
NTOMBENTSHA MSUTU
Locals and commuters had the thrill of seeing
some majestic vintage and classic cars on the
road last weekend during the 2019 OD Inggs
Memorial Run held in and round Port Alfred.
About 16 people entered the run, some coming
from as far as Cape Town and East London.
One failed to make the start while three did not
complete the run.
The run started at the Rosehill Mall on Saturday
and competitors took the R72 to the
Kenton-on-Sea crossroads, where they turned
right towards Salem and on to the T-junction with
the N2. From there they turned left to Nanaga for
a lunch break before proceeding along the R72
via Alexandria, where, following a loop, they
returned to Rosehill Mall.
After dinner at Harry B’s and a good night’s
rest, they were on the road again at 9am the
following morning.
Travelling along the R67, their course took
them through Bathurst to the junction with
Southwell farm road where they made a U-turn
and finished in Bathurst.
time, enjoying lunch and drinks before the big
announcement of the winners was made.
Organiser Mike Newlands thanked sponsors
who made the event possible this year, as well as
the people who came far just to enter the run.
“We would like to thank everyone who made
this weekend possible and the OD Inggs
Memorial Run beautiful. We had an amazing
weekend and we also want to thank those who
came very far to participate in the run. We would
also like to thank our sponsors because if it
wa s n ’t for them, none of this would be happening
t o d ay, ” Newlands said.
The OD Inggs Memorial Trophy was presented
to the overall winners, Annelie and Andrew
Murphy, who were driving a 1979 Mercedes-Benz
450slc. They were followed by Ron and Pam Gush
who received the Linden Wheels Trophy in their
1964 Triumph Spitfire.
The Arch Car Sales Trophy for third place went
to Neville and Sue Koch. They were driving a 1960
Riley 1.5.
Annelie Murphy took both the Norbert Drager
and the John Lee trophies after being declared
the first navigator and first lady driver
PJ Powers live at The Goat Shed
South African rock legend PJ
Powers will perform at The
Goat Shed in Kenton on
April 6.
Born in Durban on July 16
1960, Powers was the lead
singer for the rock band Hotline
that was formed in 1980.
Their style changed to
Afro-rock in 1983 and after
disbanding in 1987, she
launched her solo career.
In 1995 she recorded the
official Rugby World Cup song,
The World in Union, with
Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
The song reached No 47 on
the UK singles chart.
It was performed live at the
opening of the Rugby World Cup
and was seen worldwide by
audiences.
Powers has shared the stage
with the likes of Eric Clapton,
Joan Armatrading, Hugh
Masekela and other big names.
She performed at Nelson
Mandela’s inauguration and has
collaborated with Vicky
Sampson and Yvonne Chaka
Chaka.
She wrote the song for Nelson
Mandela’s 85th birthday which
she performed for him and
guests including Bill Clinton and
Oprah Winfrey.
She is extensively involved
with Reach for a Dream as well
as the Hamlet Foundation.
Her show, which is a journey
in song, together with Tigger
Renuert on guitar and vocals,
will be disarmingly honest and
funny and will include well-loved
hits such as Jabulani and Wo r l d
in Union as well as some of her
latest songs, Destiny, Stay and
Walk in my Shoes.
Accommodation is available at
Light overcalls are two edged weapons, because they also give away valuable
highly distributional. Because of the possibility of two heart losers West settles on 5C: but East
After South has responded with 1H to North’s 1D bid, North’s hand
is much improved. Although South could be showing only a four
card suit at this stage, North’s heart holding will obviously dovetail
with South’s heart suit. Hence the jump to 3D, which surely now
shows a six card suit, together with game going prospects. This bid is not actually forcing
to game, but is very strongly invitational. South has an important diamond card
À
considers slam prospects, but lacking any real motivation from South, bids game,
À
he/she can make a slam try. South is missing the AK of hearts and two more Aces,
so settles for game.
DOING A GREAT JOB
The Gift of the Givers organisation has been
doing a marvellous job at easing Makhanda’s
(Grahamstown) water woes since its arrival
in the city several weeks ago.
According to a statement released by
Makana Municipality last week, Gift of the
Givers has drilled four boreholes at Waainek,
two each on the Rhodes University campus
and at Ntsika Secondary School, and one at
the 1820 Settlers National Monument.
Boreholes planned for the near future are
four at Botha’s Hill reservoir, and one each at
the Cathedral in the CBD and at the prison, to
the west of the city.
Meanwhile, 32 JoJo water tanks that were
sourced by Gift of the Givers have arrived in
Makhanda. Once the filtration systems at
Rhodes and Ntsika boreholes are operational,
the tanks will be put up for residents to
collect water.
Gift of the Givers has also sourced two
water tankers that will deliver water regularly
and will be filled up at the Rhodes,
Monument and Ntsika boreholes.
HOT RUGBY ON A HOT DAY AT GRAEME
With all the rain recorded in the district the
past three weeks, convenor Nico van der
Meulen may have been a tad nervous going
into the annual Pam Golding Properties/
Graeme College rugby day last Saturday.
Not to worry, though. All the hard work put
in by him and his team of helpers paid
dividends, resulting in thousands of people –
players, team officials, parents and supporters
– descending on the Graeme campus.
And, as it turned out, the 20 matches were
played in sunny and hot conditions.
The morning session saw big crowds lining
the Marais fields for the U16, U15 and U14
matches, while Somerset field boasted a
massive crowd in the afternoon for the final
three matches of a highly successful day.
The Somerset field action kicked off with a
narrow 12-7 win for Mary Waters High School
over PJ Olivier High, followed by Muir from
Uitenhage defeating Port Alfred High 19-7.
Wrapping up the pre-lunch session on
Somerset, Framesby High from Port Elizabeth
scored a convincing 40-8 win over Queen’s
College from Komani (Queenstown), while
Grey High from Port Elizabeth overwhelmed
Hudson Park High from East London to the
tune of 57-3.
The afternoon session got underway with
Selborne College from East London beating
Marlow Agricultural High from Cradock 33-19.
Then it was the turn of the three Makhanda
(Grahamstown) colleges.
St Andrew’s College surprised its Cape
Town opponents SACS with a hard-fought
27-13 win, and this was followed by
Kingswood College trouncing Pearson High
from Port Elizabeth 31-0.
Then came the main game of the day, that
between hosts Graeme and long-standing
rivals Dale College from King William’s Town.
After 60 thrilling minutes, the teams
emerged with 14 points apiece and the match
was drawn. Graeme’s try scorers were lock
Hlomla Maranene and eighthman Andrew
McCallum.
ESKOM THREATENS CUTS
While most Makhandans (Grahamstonians) –
home owners, businesses, educational
institutions and other organisations –
faithfully pay their electricity accounts each
month, Makana Municipality, it seems, has
fallen far behind in its payments to Eskom.
In advertisements placed in regional
newspapers last week, Eskom stated it would
proceed with bulk electricity supply interruptions
to Makana Municipality from April 2.
Eskom said it will cut bulk supplies
between 6am and 9am, and 5pm and
8.30pm from Monday to Friday, and between
8.30am and noon, and 3pm and 7pm, on
Saturday and Sunday for the first week.
The interruptions will remain in place until
full payment has been made or agreement
reached. But Eskom could, upon 15 days’
notice, disconnect the electricity supply
entirely and indefinitely should the debt
situation not improve.
RUGBY AT GREY
The 1st rugby teams of Graeme College,
Kingswood College and St Andrew’s College
are presently in Port Elizabeth where they are
playing in the Grey High School rugby festival
being contested at 1st team, U16, U15 and U14
levels. In all, 80 matches will be played.
Also taking part are schools’ teams from
Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, East London
and Port Elizabeth.
T h u r s d ay ’s fixtures involving Makhanda
(Grahamstown) schools are: Graeme v St
Alban’s College (9.10am), St Andrew’s v St
John’s College (11.40am) and Kingswood v
Parktown Boys’ High (3.20pm).
S at u r d ay ’s fixtures: Graeme v Marlow
(10.20am), Kingswood v St John’s (11.40am)
and St Andrew’s v Jeppe Boys’ High
(12.50pm).
SAXOPHONES ON STAGE
Grahamstown Music Society presents the
Avena Saxophone Quartet at the National
English Literary Museum (NELM) at 25
Worcester Street on Monday, April 1
(7.30pm). The quartet comprises Nicolas
Allard, Sumika Tsujimoto, Fabio Cesare and
former Kingswood College pupil Adam
Campbell. Tickets are R90 (adults), R70 (pensioners)
and R50 (students). School pupils
and society members will be admitted free.
SQUASH INVITATION
Kingswood College pupils Caitlin Bell, Veer
Bills, Carolina Da Costa and Quintin Shiel
have been invited to attend the SA Junior
closed squash tournament in Johannesburg
from March 28 to 31. The top players from
each province were selected.
REALLY BAD
I suppose it’s something of a futile exercise
to report very bad pothole situations around
town, but just in case Makana Municipality
does come into some money, Market Street
near the rear gate of Inggs Funeral Home is
in a really bad way. Here’s hoping!
HIKING IN THE SOUTH
Next up on the Oldenburgia Hiking Club’s day
hike programme is a 9km circular route on
the southern commonage on Sunday, April 7,
starting and finishing at Rivendell farm.
Hikers will meet in Pepper Grove Mall (in
front of Pick n Pay) at 7.45am and leave at
8am sharp. Non-members are also welcome.
Jono Campbell is the hike leader and will
provide more details at 084-917-3667.
COLOURS FOR TENNIS
Four St Andrew’s College tennis players have
been awarded Colours for the sport – Dylan
POSSESSION: St Andrew’s College first team prop Bame Malesu has possession
of the ball in a move upfield during his team’s match against SACS from Cape
Town during the Graeme College rugby day on Saturday. St Andrew’s caused
something of a surprise by beating SACS 27-13 after leading 14-8 at halftime
Pictures: SID PENNEY
Bowker (re-award), Dylan Marx, Nic Rogan
and Robbie Houghton.
CRICKET AWARDS
Lakhanya Sam was named Graeme College’s
most outstanding all-round player of the
2018/19 season when the school’s cricket
awards were made last week. The players’
player of the year is Siphesihle
Madlongolwana, and the most improved
player award was shared by Riaan
Labuschagne and Aaron Richardson.
IN THE POOL
Five St Andrew’s College players were
members of the Eastern Province squad that
took part in the National U18 Currie Cup
waterpolo tournament in Johannesburg at
the weekend – Matthew Hillary, Ben Jevon,
Josh Cowen, Matthew Dovey and Richard
Leach. Grant MacKenzie, director of
waterpolo at St Andrew’s, was the EP coach.
COUNTRY FAIR ON CITY LORDS
Family fun is what the organisers are aiming
for at the Kingswood Junior School country
fair on the City Lords ground from 5pm on
Friday, March 22.
On sale will be everything from
hamburgers and boerie rolls to pancakes and
curry & rice, plus crafts, while the Grade 7s
will have their own entrepreneurial stalls. A
highlight will be the Kingswood talent show.
IN THE PARKRUN GROOVE
A beautiful morning, a scenic albeit tough
course, a well-organised event and a good
entry. That was parkrun in Makana botanical
gardens last Saturday when 185 runners,
joggers and walkers – plus some members of
the canine community on leashes – took to
the tree-lined pathways.
First finisher was Thoko Sipungu (20
minutes 16 seconds) and first lady was Jess
Ovendale (25 mins 34 secs). Second were
Reuben Thifhulufhelwi (23 mins 08 secs) and
Charlotte Abraham (26 mins 39 secs), and
third were Siviwe Moyake (23 mins 56 secs)
and Nombulelo Luciah (29 mins 09 secs).
Parkruns are held each Saturday at 8am
from the entrance to the botanical gardens.
STABLEFORD IN THE VALLEY
Betterball stableford is the format of play for
the Hospice golf day taking place today
(Thursday) at Belmont Golf Club in Belmont
Valley. Here’s hoping a big field will be out
on the fairways and greens.
FUN ON THE COURSE
Belmont Golf Club holds its next 4km trail fun
run/walk in the scenic surroundings of Belmont
Valley on Sunday, March 24, with registration
from 7am and the start at 8am. Entry
fee is R20 for adults and R10 for children.
ON COURT
The Graeme College U13 tennis team was
ranked second at the Grey Junior School
tennis festival last week, an event that also
attracted Selborne Primary from East London
and Bishops Prep from Cape Town.
Coached by Sheryl Luden, the Graeme
team comprised Tyenu-Josh Cannon,
Cameron Doyle, Jesse McConnachie, Joey
Motsoso, Andrew Muir, Murray Tyson and
Rhys Wiblin.
PHOENIX ON GUNFIRE HILL
It’s hard to believe, really, that it was almost
25 years ago that severe damage was caused
to the interior of the 1820 Settlers National
Monument on Gunfire Hill.
The inferno raged through the building in
the early hours of August 13 1994, twenty
years after the Monument’s opening.
Local resident Emily O’Meara wrote in the
coffee-table book Grahamstown Reflected,
published in 1995: “After a benumbed, silent
Saturday when even the weather went into
melancholy mourning, a true Brit fighting
spirit emerged as messages of support
poured in.
“The Monument would be rebuilt, better
than before. The Phoenix Fund was launched
to help it rise from the ashes.”
I wonder how many visitors to the recent
Scifest Africa stopped to have a look at the
“ar t work” upstairs in the Monument building,
comprising all sorts of metal this and metal
that salvaged from the devastating fire, and
which were welded together to form a
r e m i n d e r.
REMEMBERED
According to an advertisement in the
Grahamstown Publicity Association’s
“Coming Events” brochure of September
1976, Eric Tasmer Picture Framing carried on
business from a workshop behind what is
today Videotronic.
Eric, who died a few years ago, was a real
all-rounder, always willing to assist friends
and others with anything that needed to be
fixed, whether it was mechanical, carpentry
or maintenance work on buildings – any
problem area where skilled hands and tools
were needed.
But his talents did not end there. Those
who were acquainted with him knew of his
passion for all things motoring – motor sport,
organising motoring events from rallies to
gymkhanas and, above all, to restoring motor
vehicles like that “old” Morris Minor I
photographed for a motoring article many
years ago. Eric Tasmer was a man who was
always busy – more often than not busy
helping others.
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
Port Alfred Bowling Club
Last Tuesday we enjoyed a fun afternoon
of bowls with our sponsor, Carl Vermeulen
from Personal Trust.
The new format that is being introduced
for our Personal Trust competition and was
again played on Tuesday afternoon, is
accepted by some and rejected by others.
It is being introduced to try and create a
bit more interest in the game and an
opportunity for other people to win some
competitions instead of the same people
winning the competitions every week. It is
also an opportunity to play and get to
know all your fellow bowlers.
Some people will adapt to change easily
while there will always be others who are
adverse to change of any sort.
Sometimes a good idea is just to go
with the flow and accept that sometimes
other people have better ideas!
The winners of the Personal Trust
competition were Elzabe Rodriquez, Sue
Purdon and Gordon Goff. Congrats and
thank you to Carl Vermeulen from
Personal Trust who always comes down
from Port Elizabeth to play with us.
The Vroom and Timm Cup was played at
our club on Wednesday afternoon against
Kowie. Our men won overall and have five
points at this stage, but Kowie are still
ahead. Our ladies lost both games and
now have the same number of points as
Kowie, but are ahead on shot profit.
On Thursday, we are playing our annual
Hospice Charity Day. The teams are
selected from the list of entries, so it is
always interesting to see which team you
are in. All proceeds from the day are given
to Hospice which does a fantastic job in
our area.
This weekend is the start of the Eastern
Areas Mixed Pairs which will be played at
the Kenton and Port Alfred bowling clubs.
We wish all our bowlers who have entered
the best of luck and good bowling.
Our monthly night bowls followed by a
bring and braai will be on Friday night
March 29 at 5.30pm for 6pm. Bowlers and
non-bowlers are welcome to come and
join us for a fun evening.
Round 3 and 4 of the men’s and novice
singles will continue on Wednesday March
27 at 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
Duties for the week ending March 26 to
30: Tab Duty – Ben Nieuwoudt and
Noeline Kirsten; Bar Duty – Trevor Frost
and Eddie Senar.
Kenton Bowling Club
The final round of the hugely successful
WELL PLAYED: The 2019 Kenton Novice Singles winners, Peter Levey and Lynn West
Kenton Business League was played last
Monday with all 22 teams in action and
the Buco Rollers playing against the
Amazons in the main match.
In a very close game, the Buco Rollers
held their nerves and prevailed to become
the Kenton Business League Champions
for 2019.
The evening prize-giving and braai was
once again a tremendous success with all
our bowlers celebrating like winners.
This competition has gone from
strength to strength and the past seven
weeks have seen some very good bowls
played and great fun being had by all.
Most importantly, it has provided an
excellent networking opportunity for us all
to get to know our local business and
business people a lot better. Walking into
Buco last week and being greeted with a
“high five” was a special experience.
A very big thank you to all the teams
that participated and hearty
congratulations to the Buco Rollers. We
look forward to welcoming you all back to
the club soon for more fun-filled evenings
of bowls. Oh, what on earth to do this
Monday evening!
The Kenton men’s and ladies’ Novice
Singles championships were played over
the weekend with 20 of our new bowlers
competing in different sections on
Saturday and the top four men and ladies
progressing to the semi-finals on Sunday
morning. The men’s final on Sunday
afternoon featured Peter Levey against
“JP” du Toit with Peter getting the better
of a tenacious “JP” to remain unbeaten
over the entire weekend.
Trish Barwick and Lynn West contested
the ladies’ final where Lynn prevailed in a
very closely fought contest, also staying
unbeaten throughout the weekend.
The 36 matches played over the two
CROQUET
CORNER
... rolls that count
An enjoyable morning was held at
Damant Lodge last Thursday with the
folks there playing croquet.
Weather permitting there will be night
croquet on March 29 followed by a bring
and braai. Rollover will be on March 30.
Don’t forget the Allan Wilson
competition from April 28 until May 4.
Please remember donations for the
h a m p e r.
days seriously tested our novices and
produced some outstanding bowls and
some wonderful camaraderie.
Congratulations to all our novice
bowlers and of course, special
congratulations to Peter and Lynn, our
Novice champions for 2019.
March’s Personal Trust Trips competition
was played on Friday and was won by the
very excited trio of Hermy Scholtz, Stoffel
Scheepers and Cecil Jones who narrowly
beat out Ruth Low, Lynn West and Lydia
Palmer. Our grateful thanks go to Carl
Vermeulen and Personal Trust for the
ongoing support of our Trips competition.
Rob Bowker and Stompie Bellingan lead
the way at the top of the Dias Jackpot
rankings after Wednesday’s play, with the
chasing pack hot on their heels and lots of
bowls still to be played.
Thank you to Andrew Murray and Dias
Insurance Consultants for their
sponsorship of this extremely popular
competition.
John Davis was the very popular winner
of Friday night’s attendance draw, but Red
de Pontes was less successful, winning
the joker draw but failing to find the
elusive card in the pack.
The joker continues to hide and after a
lot of interest from an enthusiastic crowd
on Friday evening this jackpot now stands
at just more than R9,000. Even more
reason to get down to the club this Friday
evening – the joker surely has to go soon!
Club Duties (March 18 to 24): Tabs Duty
– Johan Grobler, Bar Duty – Sandie and
Ivor Rule.
Dates to remember: March 21 –
SPAR-sponsored Tabs-in at Kenton; March
23 and 24 – Eastern Areas Mixed Pairs
competition at Kenton.
Kowie Bowling Club
Bowls can be a very boring game,
especially if you play in the front rank and
are a traditionalist adhering to the original
tenets which confine you to a corner of the
rink unobtrusively awaiting your turn to
deliver your next bowl.
Bowls can be made more exciting if
those who are meant to do nothing,
actually do something.
I was at World Bowls in 1995 when the
Irish teams broke free from the rigid
shackles of the past. Their average age
was in the high twenties and they greeted
each successful shot with cheers and high
fives and whatever else the Irish do when
they are celebrating.
Sitting on the stands in Adelaide,
Australia, the Irish antics brought a breath
of fresh air to what might have been a
very staid tournament.
We in SA have never quite embraced
the Irish exuberance, but we do encourage
a policy of “participation without
int rusion” with everyone in the team being
part of a single-minded unit trying to win
a game of bowls without intruding on the
rights of the opposition to do their bit.
When two opposing sides have the
same grading total, it is the side with the
motivational skills to inspire their players
which will have the edge.
If you are having an off day, keep quiet
about it Moaning and telling all and
sundry why your bowls have strayed, does
not do your side any good. Your
teammates accept your misfortune and do
not have to hear from you what is already
obvious. Rather support them while they
concentrate on blocking the holes left by
your wayward play.
Your opposition would love to hear you
moaning about your game and will do
their best to encourage you to continue
spreading this negativism.
Another small but significant
psychological snippet is to never tell your
opposition that he is playing well. By all
means congratulate him if he has played a
good shot, but do not boost his bloated
ego – it will just raise his self-confidence
another notch. There are many skips who
will, in an attempt to divert attention from
their own dubious play, loudly proclaim
how well the opposition is playing
Big turn-out last Tuesday after the rain
and six of the seven games went to
bonus-point wins. The only exception
being Lester Scriven, Jean Churchley, and
Gavin Muir who showed no mercy in a big
win.
With some singles still being played last
Thursday, the “r e st ” were posted to “C”
green. Again we had five of six games
going to the bonus point with the odd
team of Bugs Wilmot, Peter May, and
Huwie Reese bucking the odds and
picking up the boodle.
Saturday saw a general exodus to
Albany to play in their GBS tournament.
This left only a handful at Kowie but they
still had fun playing for the snowball.
What was pleasing was that all the
games were undecided until the end.
Looking back on the whole week, it is very
gratifying to note that only two games had
a winning margin of more than four.
The community was profoundly shocked
and saddened when it became known that
Bob Ford had suddenly passed away after
surgery. His passing will leave a gaping
hole which will not be filled easily.
Hamba kahle, my friend.
Duties: Roll – Mike van der Sandt; Mark
– Stan Richter/ Dave Tyrell; Tabs –
PORT ALFRED MIXED
March 16
Ten players of each gender were drawn into five mixed
4-balls to play the usual 2-to-count Stableford alliance. At
the commencement of play the field teed off into dense mist,
but this later evaporated and conditions were warm and
sticky, tempered by light easterly breezes.
Kevin Maree, Fanie Smit, Ronel Hough and Liz Gatenby
combined well to post 88 points and win the competition.
Glyn Renecle, Derek Sinclair, Dave and Launa Kirk came
home second with 86 points. The longest walk was taken by
Juan Southey, Barrie Brady, Margie Reid and Maureen
McGarvie who collectively struggled a little to card a lowly
72 points.
There were few outstanding individual performances, the
best of which was Dave Kirk’s nett 68.
KGB RESULTS W/E 15th MARCH 2019
Tuesday March 12: After five days of very welcome rain, the
sun shone from blue skies on Tuesday morning, tempting 41
players to leap out of bed to join the early morning KGB
draw at the RPAGC. The players were drawn into three
3-balls and eight 4-balls to play a 2-to-count Stableford
Alliance.
Derick van Harmelen, Cecil Grobler, Andy Manson and Peter
Longhurst enjoyed the relatively windless conditions and
carded a winning 84 points to take the morning’s honours.
Don Torrisen, Tom Tagg and Eugene Erasmus were just one
point behind on 78 + 5 = 83.
The damp underfoot conditions did not seem to suit Gerald
Churchley, Dale Wisener, Jimmy van Rensburg and Roger
Kidson as they carded a lowly 74 points to take ownership of
the Hamer en Sukkel trophy for the day.
The best individual nett round was shot by George Lake (70)
whilst Peter Longhurst (6th), Tom Tagg and John Crandon
(8th) both made par three birdies on the holes indicated.
Friday March 15: The warm, humid and sultry conditions with
little respite from cooling breezes that described Friday
morning’s weather did not deter 46 players turning out to
play the usual 2-to-count Stableford Alliance after being
drawn into ten 4-balls and two 3-balls.
Ninety-two points were carded by Gavin Richards, Ian
Gatenby, Russel Warren and Launa Kirk who dovetailed to
perfection to win the morning’s competition. Dave Kirk,
Steve Kennedy, John Abbot and Roger Kidson secured the
runners-up slot with 89 points
AND THEY’RE OFF: Runners and walkers set off at the start of the annual Port Alfred Soup Kitchen fun
run held in conjunction with the Kowie Striders
Last Tuesday evening, the Port
Alfred Soup Kitchen held their
annual fun run in conjunction with
the Kowie Striders Running Club.
With Adviceworx as the
sponsor of the event and a
generous donation from
Compendium Insurance Brokers,
the evening proved to be
fun-filled with lucky draw prizes.
Despite the threat of rain and
set off at a strong pace
undeterred by the weather
KOWIESTRIDERS ... runners with pride
About 15 of our members took the
trip up to Bedford this past
weekend to compete in their trail
races.
There were various distances –
5, 7.5, 10 and 21km. It was a very
hot day with some tough climbs
on the 10 and 21km routes.
Congratulations to three of our
ladies who took podium places. Jo
Betts was third in the 7.5km, Gill
Legg second in the 10km and Leah
Shanks second in the 21km.
Well done to Rick Betts, Richard
conditions. The event finished off
with music, prizes and delicious
boerewors rolls.
The soup kitchen thanked the
Kowie Striders for their support
of the event, as well as their
hospitality towards all of the
participants of the fun run.
“We are pleased the fun run
has now become an annual
event on the Kowie Striders’
calendar and we would like to
commend them on the excellent
achievements of their club and
Legg and Alex Weed on some
good running in the 21km and to
Pauline Weed, Cathy and Mike
Momberg and Marietjie and Alan
Robb on sweating it out on the
10km.
A really enjoyable weekend.
Carol and Jean Nepgen were at
Uitenhage doing a 10km on
Saturday and then the Knysna
Heads 21km on Sunday where
Jean finished in 3 hours 17
minutes followed three minutes
later by Carol who was not feeling
the wonderful work they are
involved in,” said Sally Blake of
the soup kitchen.
“A final thank you to all of the
contestants and for all your
donations which will go a long
way in helping us to continue
our work at the soup kitchen.
“A special thanks to Jan
Holloway who, while on holiday
from the UK, managed to raise a
substantial amount of
sponsorships in pounds towards
the event,” Blake said.
great and had an off day.
On April 19 (Easter weekend)
Kowie Striders are organising the
Amanzi 8km trail run. We need as
many helpers as possible.
Billy’s Tips
Never say never. A well trained
athlete is able to take on
unexpected challenges and most
people are able to do far more
than they expected.
It’s getting darker as winter
approaches. Please wear white or
luminous tops when out training.
