Dalamba bites the
dust at the Dumpy
Stemela’s
sixes seals
T20 game
NTSIKELELO QOYO
Last weekend Sada Cricket Club
crushed Siseko Dalamba in an exciting
T20 played at the Dumpy Adams field in
the Komani internal league.
The hosts won the toss and elected to
bat The visitors showed their intent
early with Sibongiseni Stemele
barrelling down the field to deliver the
first ball short, testing Unathi Jaske’s
back foot. Jaske was opening with Issac
Mihlali and would prove up to the task.
His innings of a solid 42 not out
anchored his team while Mihlali was
run out for a paltry three.
Aviwe Dlabantu was in next, going on
to produce Dalamba’s best innings in
knocking up 56. In the middle overs the
visitors looked to be in control with
excellent bowling from visiting skipper
Themba Trom, but sloppy fielding undid
this, with boundaries beginning to flow
from spin bowler Luvuyo Makhasi.
Dlabantu would fall and this brought
MORE SIXES: Dalamba facing Sada in a T20 game of cricket at Dumpy Adams grounds that was turned on its head
Siviwe Ngoqo to the crease. He played
the most exciting knock for the hosts.
In the 18th and 19th overs he changed
the whole complexion of the game with
sixes and fours. He would make 46 from
just 27 balls before falling to a false
stroke. The home team would go on to
make 141, what looked like an
impressive score at the time.
In came the visitors who looked short
of confidence with Keagan Isaacs and
Ngoqo’s bowling partnership keeping
them quiet for five overs. Their openers
were Makhasi and Bonginkosi
Komisane, who went out for a duck.
Captain Trom failed, being trapped
EL Police crowned
best in the province
MAXWELL LEVINE
lbw fot two. Makhasi would fall with an
attempted pull shot that was caught at
cover, with the scoreboard reading 29.
It was only when Mzukisi Mwezo
came in that the visitors found stability,
thanks to his maiden half century. But it
was Stemela “Destruction Boy” as he is
affectionately known by his teammates,
who took the game from the home
team. In the last over Sada needed 14
from six balls Stemela hit two pull shots
for six each and sealed the game.
After the game Trom was ecstatic. “I
am very happy. The fielding was good,
bowling was disciplined, batting
improved.”
FUN AND GAMES: Thistledown Preschool held a sports day earlier this
month, with parents and children getting involved in different fun and
sporting activities such as the hula hoop race, as seen in this picture
East London Police captured the imagination of
the entire province when they won the Eastern
Cape Super 12 rugby competition in style, beating
Port Elizabeth Police 26-13 in a pulsating finale.
This pitted the six top Border clubs against their
EP counterparts to be crowned the best in the
province. It is sweet victory for the East
London-based side, considering they had to play
both semifinals and finals away from home on
consecutive weekends.
EL Police had to travel to Uitenhage a fortnight
ago to play against the unbeaten Star of Hope,
while PE Police locked horns with another
unbeaten side in Progress.
The two police teams turned the tables on their
more illustrious opponents for two upset victories,
ironically both away from home.
Buoyed by their top-class players, EL Police
showed no mercy to their PE counterparts, taking
a 19-6 halftime lead at Kemsley Park in PE.
They were also first to score in the second half
with a converted try to take a commanding 26-6
lead. To their credit, the home side kept on
fighting and got a consolation try to take the
scores to 26-13.
Coached by Fergus Kennedy, the East London
side has firmly re-established itself as one of the
best teams around and their aim is to capture the
Border Super League, en route to the Gold Cup.
Meanwhile in local rugby, Old Collegians
defeated local rivals Shining Stars 29-26 at the
Thobi Kula Indoor Stadium.
ý The long-awaited meeting between Border
clubs and the South African Rugby Union
administrator, Basil Haddad, is set to take place on
Sunday at the Garden Court Hotel in East London,
starting at 11am.
