The semi-formal event last Wednesday saw donors and car dealerships who hosted blood drives in 2018, being pampered at The Gallery for having contributed life-saving blood. Guests and donors had a free pass at the bar while the meals, speeches and conversation continued to keep the good mood going as donors were called to the podium to receive their awa r d s . SANBS donor practitioner Maryke Harris said the awards ceremony was held to show gratitude to the people who had made it part of their lives to donate their blood to save the lives of those who needed it most. “This is just a gesture to say thank you to everyone for their support, but most importantly, from the people who you gave your blood to. “Your contributions are far more important and meaningful than what we have organised for you here, but we know you do not need us to pay you for it with anything. “This evening is all about the donors and celebrating the many times you have shared your blood with others. We are here to celebrate the milestones you have achieved in your blood donation careers. We have received so much support from Komani, but we still need to recruit more people in our families, workplaces and our social circles to become part of this important i n i t i at i v e . ” Harris said people who were not donating blood had no idea how many people one donation saved. She said one “pint” of blood saved three people and if everyone donated at least four times a year they would have saved 12 people’s lives each y e a r. Donors received awards for their donations, including a gift to encourage them to keep sharing their blood with others. The milestones achieved ranged from youngsters who started donating in 2018 and did not miss their donation dates, to people who had donated more than 100 times, with one local having donated 250 times since starting d o n at i n g . Those recognised included: Asisipho Ndzendevu, who joined Club 25 for having donated 20 times before her 25th birthday, Esethu Pongolo and Lucky Moni (20), Ashwall van Heerden, Martha Lee, Tembile Pimpi, Karel Myburg (50), Malibongwe Fuma, Derek Wormald, Xolani Nyhaba, Kishor Harry, Ronald Hardnick, Anna Erasmus, Linda Cotterrell (75 each), Brenda Forword, Siebert Pretorius, David Moody, Morne Fouche, Johannes Hattingh and Christopher van der Watt for 100 units donated, Stephan de Klerk jr, Mary-Anne de Klerk, Michele van de Venter and Derek Boy (125) and Coenraad Bezuidenhout (150) with Milly Whale topping the list at 250 units. SPECIAL BIRTHDAY: Esther Dowling, centre, last weekend celebrated her 60th birthday with a 60s party for family and friends. This followed after 21 Mato members, along with the headman’s executive committee members of the village, had taken their complaints to the ANC’s Calata House and the department of transport, safety and liaison offices last Tu e s d ay. They had threatened that if the road was not attended to within seven days, a total shutdown strike would fo l l o w. Mabuyane and Tikana had also done a Thuma Mina campaign for the upcoming elections at the Methodist church in Ilinge earlier on the same day. Mito public relations officer Mbulelo Madolo said Mabuyane informed them that he had received the road complaints petition from the ANC secretary, Lulama Ngcukayithobi, who had spoken to them at Calata. “Mabuyane said the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality could not construct a tar road as the municipality was bankrupt and under the administration of the province. “He said the tar road would be budgeted for at a later stage and that they could only fix the gravel road at present,” Madolo said. “Mabuyane said he had witnessed the bad state of the road on his way to the ANC campaign and that no road was meant to look like that. He added that the municipal leadership had failed to d e l i v e r. “He said we could look at paving as it cost R1m to make just 1km of tarred road and paving would cost less.” Madolo said Tikana had indicated that she did not know about the letter of approval to construct a tarred road from the national department of transport in 2014. However, she admitted to have received other letters requesting tarred roads. “We are not satisfied with the outcome but they are at least doing something to mend the road.” He said plant was hired and sent on Friday to start repairing the road. FRANK DISCUSSIONS: ANC officials met with Machibini Taxi Association members after complaints about the poor state of roads in the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality region Taxi rank serves as shelter NTSIKELELO QOYO The intermodal taxi rank, which is supposed to be a pride of service delivery for the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM), has become an albatross around its neck. The rank, which was scheduled to be opened back in 2017, has been put to good use by vagrants who seek shelter against the elements at night. Construction on the multi-million rand project began in 2013, was completed in 2017 and has been abandoned ever since. The Rep has been informed that there has been squatting at the rank for years. Nozukile Tata, a hawker, is dismayed by the delays. “The [temporary] taxi rank we are currently using is not fit for the purpose. It is hard for us to sell food to people here. It is very dirty and customers complain, saying they will get sick from our food. Our makeshift shelters are even being stolen – just yesterday I lost my covering. They [vagrants] take them to make fires to keep warm and it is going to be worse now that winter is coming.” Local taxi drivers who preferred to remain anonymous complained that they were being inconvenienced by the temporary rank. “This place is not suitable for any service to the public. The rains make it a pigsty.” CHDM spokesperson Butsa Lali said: “The municipality is aware that people are sleeping at the rank. This is the same with all government infrastructure that is not being used.” On the opening of the rank he said, “The municipality will release a statement on Friday.” Attempts to obtain comment from Uncedo Taxi Association have been futile. The public relations officer Tolly Madoda said: “If the taxi association has any problems with the municipality they will get hold of the media themselves.”
