12 Tuesday April 2 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi SOUTHERN VIEW Shirley aces it at Nga Puna Wai • By Gordon Findlater SHIRLEY BOYS’ High School broke in the new tennis facilities at Nga Puna Wai by winning the Boys Cup as part of the national secondary schools teams finals. The team of Reece Falck, Jordan Edwards and Luca Landells won the cup by defeating Fielding High School 2-1 in the final last week. The tournament was the first national tennis tournament played at the recently opened Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub. The cup competition was played in conjunction with the national secondary school championships - the country’s top secondary school tournament - being held at Wilding Park. Through the five singles matches Falck played during the tournament he dropped just two games. In their first pool game Shirley defeated Marlborough Boys’ College 3-0. Falck won his opening match 6-0, 6-0, while Edwards accounted was just as dominant in a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the other singles tie. SBHS then completed the clean sweep when Falck teamed up with Landells to win the doubles tie 6-4, 6-4. SBHS swept Auckland’s Lynfield College in their second pool game 3-0. Flack won again without dropping a game and Landells won the second singles tie 6-3, 6-2. Falck and Edwards WINNERS: Luca Landells, Reece Falck and Jordan Edwards won the Boys Cup title as part of national secondary schools teams finals. then combined to comfortably win the doubles tie 6-1, 6-1. In their final pool match SBHS came up against Fielding High School. Falck again was perfect 6-0, 6-0. The team then dropped their first point of the tournament when Landells was defeated 2-6, 6-4, 7-10. However, SBHS clinched the doubles and the tie when Edwards and Falck won 6-1, 6-2. The three victories saw SBHS top their pool to set up a semifinal against Hamilton’s St Pauls Collegiate School. Falck once again got his team off to a perfect start with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Edwards then clinched the tie with a gutsy 6-2, 1-6, 10-5 victory. With the tie already decided the doubles wasn’t played. In the final Falck secured a 6-0, 6-2 over Connor Backhouse. Edwards then sealed the title with 6-1, 6-3 win against Jonty Stewart. In the doubles Backhouse and Stewart defeated Edwards and Landells 2-6, 2-6. DOMINANT: Reece Falck dropped just two games in his five singles matches at the tournament.
