Oamaru, a small but perfectly
formed kiwi town with coastal and
country charm is known for its mix of
wildlife and wacky; where else can
you … MAKE HISTORY, experiencing
life as a Victorian lady (or a
vagabond, we’re not judging) during
Victorian Heritage Celebrations from
13-17 November … Join participants
from around the globe celebrating
10 years of Steampunk in NZ by
blending SCIENCE and FICTION at
the Steampunk NZ Festival, 30-May
to 2 June.
Experience the night of MAGIC that
is the Fire and Steam Festival on 31
May. ENJOY music, LOVE live theatre
and an arts trail when local painters
throw open their studios as part of
the Waitaki Arts Festival 4-20 Oct.
This is the year to stop and stay
much more than a day; 2019 has
festival-fun GALORE in Oamaru,
so CIRCLE THE CALENDAR. Book
a romantic weekend, a family
get-together, a mini-break with a
difference, and while here, you’ll
see THE SKY’S THE LIMIT in the
south island’s only flight simulator.
Sample the region’s award-winning
wines (the reason they’re so good?
Because of the limestone bedrock
that sweetens the soil) and whiskies.
Eat some really great cheese, take a
saunter around the Cape, check out
the local cuties AND our little blue
penguins.
Waitaki, we love this place. Come
find out why.
Your journey between the Southern
Alps to Pacific Ocean will take
you through spectacular natural
landscapes, such as Clay Cliffs -
Omarama, Elephant Rocks and
Anitini - Duntroon, and Moeraki
Bolders on the beautiful Pacific
Highway. Vanished World Centre
in Duntroon, you’ll find exhibits,
fossils and insights into land formed
over millions of years. The Pacific
coastline offers long stretches of
sandy beaches, where wildlife such
as fur seals, penguins and sea birds
are abundant.
For activities in the natural
environment, try gliding in Omarama,
geo-copter flights, golfing, skiing at
Ohau, jet boating the Waitaki River,
cycle all (or parts) of the stunning
Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail, or hike the
scenic walking trails on offer.
Our cutest residents - the Little Blue
Penguins, are worth viewing coming
home to the Oamaru Blue Penguin
Colony at dusk - it’s a delight! Visit
Oamaru’s historic precinct for
shopping, Steampunk for a new
visual-art experience or stroll along
the enchanting small village port.
Oamaru’s Whitestone architecture
is grand, preserved as the best
example of a Victorian streetscape in
New Zealand.
Rich soils along the coast support
market-gardening while inland the
Waitaki/North Otago wines produce
superb Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris
varieties. New Zealand Whiskey
Company and craft beer breweries
located in Oamaru, when teamed up
with the famous Whitestone Cheese
are brilliant! Local award-winning
restaurants combine much of the
above, showcasing the incredible
food from our place – our Geogastronomy.
