on the rezoning and landscape plan. The meeting is set for 7 p.m.
A new industrial park planned for West Jefferson is one step
in council chambers at village hall, 28 E. Main St.
closer to realization.
Mayor Ray Martin hopes the project will attract more light industrial
type businesses, ones that create lots of jobs, which benefits
On April 15, village council held a first reading on legislation to
rezone 375 acres northeast of U.S. Route 40 from agricultural use
the village in the form of income taxes.
to a planned commerce district. Referred to as the Looby Estate, the
Currently, no specific corporation is being courted for the new
area sits across the road from the existing West Jefferson Commerce
Park which houses the Amazon warehouse and Ace Hard-
industrial park.
In other action, council passed emergency legislation for an addendum
to the tax increment financing agreement (TIF) between
ware distribution center.
The legislation also provides for future conditional uses of the
the village and Battelle Memorial Institute. The agreement allows
property and grants a variance for the landscape plan.
for the reimbursement of the cost of infrastructure improvements,
The multi-phase project is anticipated to take 10 to 20 years to
particularly road improvements to sections of State Route 142 intersecting
State Route 29, where deceleration and turning lanes are
complete and will be developed from the southeast to the northeast.
Marc Gialluca, senior development services manager of Duke Realty,
the firm responsible for development of the proposed and ex-
New moms invited to baby shower
By Theresa Hennis
Staff Writer
Madison County’s Healthy Child and Family Consortium will
host its spring community baby shower at 5 p.m. May 14 at the
West Jefferson Community Center, 221 S. Center St.
Held each spring and fall, the consortium’s baby showers are designed
to provide new mothers and expectant mothers with information
on the latest safety measures for newborns.
“One of the main reasons the showers were organized was to help
prevent SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) for which Ohio is
ranked as one of the worst states in the U.S.,” explained Amy Hix,
one of the event’s organizer.
Information and resource booths promote safe sleep and breast
feeding, two ways to help prevent SIDS. Attendees are educated on
car seat safety and encouraged to have their car seats installed by
certified professionals at their WIC office or fire department. Additionally,
they receive information about maternal mental health to
help them understand the changes they might experience as a new
mom and how to seek support.
The showers feature decorated tables, finger foods, cupcakes,
and diaper bags filled with necessities and more. Drawings are held
for strollers, cribs and other items.
“We have been blessed with many donations from agencies and
organizations,” Hix said, “and we’ve been able to give away an abundance
of baby needs.”
The consortium held its first baby shower in November 2016 and
has hosted two showers per year since then. Approximately 100
moms and support people have attended each of the last five showers.
The event has evolved over the years. Organizers have moved it
around to different parts of the county, reaching out to all families
to let them know about the resources available
throughout the county.
Sponsors of the upcoming community
baby shower are Buckeye Health Plan,
