But when thirty days are past, as <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> mourning, for so many are<br />
sufficient <strong>to</strong> prudent persons for lamenting <strong>the</strong> dearest friends, <strong>the</strong>n let <strong>the</strong>m<br />
proceed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> marriage; but in case when he hath satisfied his lust, he be <strong>to</strong>o<br />
proud <strong>to</strong> retain her for his wife, let him not have it in his power <strong>to</strong> make her a<br />
slave, but let her go away whi<strong>the</strong>r she pleases, and have that privilege <strong>of</strong> a<br />
free woman.<br />
24. As <strong>to</strong> those young men that despise <strong>the</strong>ir parents, and do not pay<br />
<strong>the</strong>m honor, but <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong>m affronts, ei<strong>the</strong>r because <strong>the</strong>y are ashamed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />
or think <strong>the</strong>mselves wiser than <strong>the</strong>y, - in <strong>the</strong> first place, let <strong>the</strong>ir parents<br />
admonish <strong>the</strong>m in words, (for <strong>the</strong>y are by nature <strong>of</strong> authority sufficient for<br />
becoming <strong>the</strong>ir judges,) and let <strong>the</strong>m say thus <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m: - <strong>That</strong> <strong>the</strong>y cohabited<br />
<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, not for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> pleasure, nor for <strong>the</strong> augmentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
riches, by joining both <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>to</strong>cks <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, but that <strong>the</strong>y might have<br />
children <strong>to</strong> take care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir old age, and might by <strong>the</strong>m have what<br />
<strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>n should want. And say fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> him, "<strong>That</strong> when thou wast born,<br />
we <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong>e up with gladness, and gave God <strong>the</strong> greatest thanks for <strong>the</strong>e,<br />
and brought time up with great care, and spared for nothing that appeared<br />
useful for thy preservation, and for thy instruction in what was most<br />
excellent. And now, since it is reasonable <strong>to</strong> forgive <strong>the</strong> sins <strong>of</strong> those that are<br />
young, let it suffice <strong>the</strong>e <strong>to</strong> have given so many indications Of thy contempt<br />
<strong>of</strong> us; reform thyself, and act more wisely for <strong>the</strong> time <strong>to</strong> come; considering<br />
that God is displeased with those that are insolent <strong>to</strong>wards <strong>the</strong>ir parents,<br />
because he is himself <strong>the</strong> Fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole race <strong>of</strong> mankind, and seems <strong>to</strong><br />
bear part <strong>of</strong> that dishonor which falls upon those that have <strong>the</strong> same name,<br />
when <strong>the</strong>y do not meet with dire returns from <strong>the</strong>ir children. And on such <strong>the</strong><br />
law inflicts inexorable punishment; <strong>of</strong> which punishment mayst thou never<br />
have <strong>the</strong> experience." Now if <strong>the</strong> insolence <strong>of</strong> young men be thus cured, let<br />
<strong>the</strong>m escape <strong>the</strong> reproach which <strong>the</strong>ir former errors deserved; for by this<br />
means <strong>the</strong> lawgiver will appear <strong>to</strong> be good, and parents happy, while <strong>the</strong>y<br />
never behold ei<strong>the</strong>r a son or a daughter brought <strong>to</strong> punishment. But if it<br />
happen that <strong>the</strong>se words and instructions, conveyed by <strong>the</strong>m in order <strong>to</strong><br />
