On page 3 today we reveal a great plan for the area – up to 40,000 native trees will be planted in the basin. It is all part of project called Matariki Tu Rākau, a nationwide initiative launched last year to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War 1. The aim is to have 350,000 trees planted across New Zealand by 2020. Ten hectares of the 125ha basin will be planted with kahikatea. Given it is a flood basin the trees should grow very quickly. Another 25ha will also be planted in native bush, but not part of the Matariki Tu Rākauproject. The city council will receive funding from the Ministry of Primary Industries for the project as part of Matariki Tu Rākau until 2020. Matariki Tu Rākauwas launched last year to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War 1, with the aim to have 350,000 planted across New Zealand Steve Bush by 2020. Currently, the basin on the west side of Cranford St acts as a natural stormwater collector. Of the 125ha that the basin covers, 10ha will be used for the plantation of Kahikatea trees. An additional 25ha will be used for the additional plantation of native bush, but not as part of the current project. The following plantation of 36,500 trees is planned for 2020. Manager Steve Bush said the wetlands are “perfect” for the plantation of Kahikatea. Mr Bush said he hopes schools and community members will jump on board for the plantation days. “It will be an ideal opportunity for people within the city limits to be involved a single planting that represents something so special,” said Mr Bush. Kahikatea was chosen for planting as they provide many ecological benefits and are expected to provide a hub for native bush bird around the city. Once trees have grown, Cranford Basin will be the largest area of native forest on the low Canterbury plains. A report outlining the project said that Cranford St is a “distinctive feature of Christchurch” and provides the last rural experience for motorists entering the city from the north. If the basin was not acquired for forestation, the land and soils would have continued to degrade. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk IMPROVING ROAD SAFETY New flexible road safety barriers that help stop head-on crashes and save lives are being installed on QE II Dr between Innes and Burwood Rds. The barriers are part of a $2.5 million New Zealand Transport Agency safety project that is due to be finished in June. It includes barriers down the side and middle of the road, widening, and road marking that makes it easier for motorists to see the road in the dark. SEWER UPGRADES There will be sewer work at the intersection of Main North and Prestons Rds until Monday. The city council is upgrading underground services to cater for Redwood growth. There will be increased noise during the day. Bins can still be put out as usual before 6am on collection day. LIBRARY REPAIR WORK Nor’West News reported last issue that repairs are being done in Bishopdale Library to fix shrinkage cracks in the concrete. However, repairs are being made to the polished floor surface, which will be relaid and polished as it was not up to standard. Repairs to shrinkage cracks were made in January. Bishopdale Library will reopen on April 29.
