And one area that, as an installer, you will be all too familiar is that of passwords. We know that changing default passwords is a must and we know that using different passwords is also highly important although when you have to remember so many passwords and user names it’s no surprise that we see plenty of cases of data breaches hit the media – which none of us want. Whenever a DIY surveillance system is ‘hacked’ it throws a bad light over the whole networked camera sector. The cases of baby monitors and webcams being accessed by outsiders do nothing to promote professional IP systems, a concern you will no doubt have had to explain to customers at some point. In the majority of these cases it is a case of the default We are now at a position where many of the latest generation coming into the sector know more about IT than those leaving the sector password not being changed and no encryption being used that causes the problem. Fortunately professional camera manufacturers have taken major leaps forward in their solutions to combat IT insecurities. But maybe the industry itself was a little complacent early on with the security of security systems in the initial development of IP systems. Did we spend so long competing over who had the highest resolution camera or who had the fanciest app that the security element of the system was relegated down the list of important factors? Fortunately today we are in a strong position to compete against DIY networked systems when it comes to security and even if the ‘attacks’ become more sophisticated we have plenty of cyber awareness compared to the average homeowner who buys a system online and expects it to be secure without personalising the solution and using the default settings. Of course, many of you don’t just work for a business, you own it too and you can go one step further than making sure you install secure systems by getting yourselves approved by a scheme such as the aforementioned Cyber Essentials that looks at the company as a whole. There are five companies appointed as Accreditation Bodies for assessing and certifying against the Government's Cyber Essentials Scheme. The Scheme focuses on the five most important technical security controls. According to one of the appointed companies, IASME, these controls were identified by the government as those that, if they had been in place, would have stopped the majority of the successful cyberattacks over the last few years. The evolution to a position where we are all familiar with IT and the need for security around all connected devices has happened over the last two decades and we are now at a position where many of the latest generation coming into the sector know more about IT than those leaving the sector. We’re more IT aware than ever, which means that those wishing to do harm over IP are also high on the same scale. If you are networking technology then all steps must be taken to avoid a problem that, with the global impact and speed of social media, can do so much harm. The old saying “there’s no such thing as bad news” is no longer apparent with the power of social media. People no longer need any proof before they make claims online so your reputation can be damaged beyond repair before you know it – even if you are free of blame. The security of security systems is always going to be an issue. From the first time a camera was connected via the Web to where we are today every step must be taken to secure the system – there’s too much to lose by being soft on security. 32 www.psimagazine.co.uk
