Take time to train
You’re never too old to learn something new
which is especially fortunate in an industry
that is increasingly closing the gap on the IT
sector and making networking and software
issues more integral to installer duties
Acouple of years ago we were all waiting for the IP tipping
point in the security sector. That moment when networked
cameras would overtake the sales of analogue ones. It did
eventually come, a little later than most predicted, but when it
did it meant that the market had changed forever. On the eve of
the big event we ran an article asking whether installers should
fully embrace one discipline or the other, or try and straddle both
in a bid to offer the total package. The responses we got were all
in favour of learning about IP or risk going out of business in less
than a decade. We had an old dog wearing glasses on the cover
to prove that you can teach... well you get the picture. Today we
have seen that despite analogue still clinging on in some areas
the market is networked and connectivity is now king - especially
with all the convergence going on.
Those coming to the end of their time in the sector around a
decade ago were able to get out without having to pick up the IP
skills but anyone sticking around needed to embrace the change
or face an uncertain future. It is particularly fortunate therefore
that the fire and security sector is blessed with so many ways to
pick up new skills. There are organisations out there focused on
educating installers on the latest technology, how to fit it and
how to specify the correct kit and design a system for best
practice. Manufacturers and distributors also recognise the
benefit of having a customer base that knows how to fit their
technology so we have plenty of roadshows and tours for you to
go on to pick up the necessary knowledge. After all it is in their
best interest for you to be fully up-to-speed on the systems so
you specify them and fit them correctly, but it is a two-way street
in terms of benefits for both parties.
This month I had an interesting chat with a recruitment agency
that specialises in placing fire and security engineers (see
Interview later in this edition) and we discussed a number of
topics, yet the one that stuck in my mind the most was the
subject of training.
You want the best people to come and work for you, that’s a
given, but what if they have a great personality and plenty of
skills yet lack a bit of knowledge? You send them on a course, but
can you afford their time off the tools? The answer is - you have
to. It’s the classic ‘speculate to accumulate’ scenario when it
comes to training. What the gained knowledge can bring to the
table is realised further down the line. After all, those entering
the sector are bringing with them a familiarity around IT that
those leaving the industry never had.
It’s skills that pay the bills in the long run.
our portfolio, as we continue to build our
electronic security services as part of our
Vision 2020 strategy.” explains Brian Riis
Nielsen, Country President, Securitas UK.
Roman Cooper, Service Director, also
commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity
THE BOTTOM LINE
IN ASSOCIATION WITH CSL
The interview that gets
the facts from the top
This month Simon Banks
talks to Mike Reddington,
Chief Executive of the
BSIA. Mike was
appointed as Chief Executive in
January 2019 and has worked in the
security industry for over 25 years. He
began his career in electronic engineering before
moving into sales and marketing, rising into senior
roles for a variety of leading blue-chip
organisations, such as Honeywell and ADI.
You’re now four months into your new role, what are the next priorities
for the BSIA?
My focus is to ensure the BSIA continues to be recognised as the voice of
the professional security industry, working with existing and new members in
the positive development of standards and best practice which enhance our
sector. Membership of the BSIA is a kitemark of professionalism and quality
in the security industry, providing increased confidence to potential
customers when choosing a reliable partner for their purchase and delivery
of required security services.
With Brexit and close IoT verticals entering our sector, do you agree
that professional Alarm Installers will benefit from BSIA membership?
In relation to the electronic installation security sector there is considerable
change taking place in the market with Next Generation Network (NGN),
Electronic Call Handling Operation (ECHO) and Cyber Security. The BSIA is
ideally positioned to provide support and direction to its members and the
industry in navigating their way through these changing times.
With imminent implementation of PD6662:2017 and future changes
associated with PD6669, how important is it for the BSIA to advise its
members on these changes?
PD6662:2017 is a crucial update bringing together the latest European and
British standards for Installers. PD6669 is a brand-new UK standard focusing
on the reliability of alarm transmission systems and adds to the European
standards we follow. Advising our members is vital and we actively encourage
engagement to understand these changes and provide input in the direction
and development of standards within the professional security industry.
With all this ongoing change, how important do you believe skills are
for our sector?
Our sector needs to remain relevant, and as the voice of the professional
security industry we are committed to driving the skills and competency
required to ensure this happens. Our training section allows members to
provide a variety of industry-recognised training courses, whilst our wholly
owned subsidiary, Skills for Security, focuses primarily on delivering these
schemes through apprenticeships and creating our Engineers of Tomorrow.
Technology continues to move at a rapid pace and there are also potential
new entrants into the security industry – some of whom don’t have the
knowledge, skill or experience to deliver the products and service that end
users require. The BSIA is continually working with its members and partners
across all sectors of the professional security industry to ensure a high level
of quality and professionalism is maintained. Professionalism and relevance
remain our focus through vetting of employees, education, training,
appropriate standards and best practice. These all combine to address the
needs of today and the future of our sector.
YOU SAID IT!
“Thank you to James (Carter) from CSL for a brilliant onsite training course today.”
The DS-7204HUHI-K1 is a hybrid device
capable of recording Analogue (CVBS),
HDTVI, AHD, TVI and IP camera streams.
H.264 and H.265 compression is supported along
with “Plus” variants of both. 5MP TVI cameras are
supported for all four inputs and disk drives of up
to 10TB can be fitted. In addition to the HDMI
output which is 4K capable, VGA and composite
video outputs are provided.
Getting started
The test unit was supplied with a 4TB surveillance
drive pre-fitted. The power supply is of the plug
variety and power is fed into the unit by way of a
polarised 4 pole mini DIN style connector feeding
12v DC.
At first power-up the user is prompted for the
language to be used and then a strong password
of 8 to 16 characters must be entered. Additional
optional entries allow for a reserved e-mail
address, security questions and GUID export file
to be created for password resetting should this
be required. After these security questions an
unlock pattern can be entered using the usual 9-
point matrix.
A set-up wizard then runs with options to
change the time & date from its Beijing default to
your local time zone and display format
preference. The network settings then follow after
which the wizard can be stopped, and settings
returned to later if required.
The initial display is a quad presentation with
time & date showing in the top left-hand corner of
each segment. This layout is fully configurable
through the menu settings. A large Record icon in
the right-hand corner indicates that the image is
being recorded and an Alarm Bell icon is shown
for alarm events or missing camera inputs.
The documentation can be misleading as it is
generic for the 7200 series and therefore some of
the specification detail must be carefully
considered. While the 7204 accommodates up to
5MP on all four Turbo (TVI) inputs only channel 1
supports up to 8MP IP streams. The specification
sheet suggests up to eight IP streams could be
used if no analogue channels are populated but
the menu gives a maximum of six.
Menu options
Toolbar menu
When the mouse pointer is moved into a quadrant
a toolbar-menu overlay appears at the bottom
with the following options:
Instant playback: Shows the last five minutes
for the selected camera with a timeline slider and
pause control.
PTZ Control: Forces full-screen view and a
control panel opens on the right hand side of
screen with on-screen drag and zoom supported.
Digital zoom: Forces full-screen view and
presents a slider and plus and minus buttons to
zoom. The mouse is then used to move around the
overall image. Right mouse button to return to
normal view.
Image settings: Brightness, Contrast etc. for
two time-segments (schedules).
Audio On / Mute: Brings up a volume slider
when activated.
Live View Strategy: IP stream as Real Time,
Balanced or Fluency for latency management.
Information: IP stream data display.
Stop recording: Stops / Starts the channel
from being recorded.
Stream Select: Switches between Main and
Sub stream for display.
Show VCA Info: Overlays the VCA activations
on the analogue inputs.
For PTZ, a help window opens to explain
mouse control when first opened but this can be
inhibited.
TEST
A very easy means to
provide or upgrade a
small analogue
recording system to
give Megapixel
performance without
replacing existing
cable infrastructure
File Management: Selection of All, Human or
Vehicle files (depends on camera functionality).
Smart Analysis: Counting and Heat Mapping.
Camera Management: Analogue / IP
allocation, OSD settings, Privacy, Video and
Camera parameters.
Storage Management: Record scheduling,
Events, Storage details, Database repair,
Overwrite and Cloud.
System Management: Language, T&D, Users,
Network, Event setup and Smart event
configuration, Live views and Holiday schedules.
System Maintenance: System and Log
information, Import / Export, Upgrade, Defaults,
HDD operation and System service.
Additional icons to the right of the above
options are for Download, Alarms, Backup and
Power Off. The Power Off button is also used to
change user or log off.
Hardware
The unit runs at a reasonably low temperature so
has no requirement for a fan and is therefore
silent in operation apart from the small amount of
drive sound. This model only has fixings and
connections for a single hard drive though the
main PCB that contains most of the circuitry does
appear to have an unpopulated space for a
second data connection. Replacement drives,
when newly installed are automatically detected
and identified, with the user prompted to initialise
them before use.
Front indicators show power status, disc and
network activity. An IR receiver aperture is
alongside these with a front panel USB socket
beneath for additional devices such as memory
sticks.
Four alarm inputs and one alarm output are
provided on the rear panel with push-fit terminals.
A mechanical relay provides the alarm output as a
normally open contact with menu-controlled
duration.
A rear panel USB socket is available for the
mouse input, leaving the front panel USB free for
clip downloads to removeable storage.
Audio input is by way of four phono (RCA)
sockets with a further one for audio output.
RS485 camera control is available from a pair of
push-fit connectors although coax telemetry is
also supported for compatible devices.
A small hand-held remote control handset is
provided that allows access to functions via the
on-screen menu system for selection and
playback, however, this is quite laborious to use
and its miss-use could compromise the system as
it is easy to stop all channels recording and can
be used to power down the system.
Performance
When used with analogue cameras the unit
operates just as any analogue DVR should with no
complexity. However, this unit does have the
advantage that once network connected, IP
cameras can be added. The setup menu identifies
compatible IP cameras on the local subnet, and
these can be added to the recorder. This model
allows for a total of up to six cameras that can be
a mix of analogue or IP to suit, so if four analogue
cameras are connected you can add just two IP,
but the four analogue inputs can be traded for IP
streams.
A major concern is the ease with which
recordings can be stopped using the on-screen
toolbar icon. This even appears for operator level
users, but it is possible to inhibit this feature for
non-admin level users once you work through the
confusing terminology. The manual does not
clarify this significant problem.
The maintenance options provide a good level
of information, especially the Hard Disk SMART
data and bad sector detection.
Video motion and line crossing detection are
easily set up and perform well. The unit also
supports some of the more complex search
features such as people and vehicle search but
only for cameras that provide these features.
Playback controls are very good with fast play
and reverse at up to 256 times. The reverse play is
very smooth. Smart playback allows the users to
quickly review incidents.
Conclusion
A very easy means to provide or upgrade a small
analogue recording system to give Megapixel
performance without replacing existing cable
infrastructure. The Stop Recording toolbar icon
should ideally be inhibited by default for a UK
device, but otherwise the unit operates well and
is straightforward to use.
The security industry is busy and complex, so it’s easy to miss
new products and services as they get lost in day-to-day
activities. Every now and again, certain products grab our
attention so here we take a look at some of the products we
think you won’t want to miss this month.
Commercial camera with 4G
and Wi-Fi connectivity
Eagle Eye Networks has announced the
availability of its 2 Megapixel Eagle Eye Mobile
Camera MC01, a small 4G/LTE camera for use in
locations that have difficulty with standard
internet access. Eagle Eye Networks is also
making mobile data plans available so that
channel partners can provide a complete solution
to customers.
The Eagle Eye MC01 is designed for remote
Audio monitor completes the
Net2 Entry range
Paxton has launched the Net2 Entry Audio monitor
which supports all existing Net2 Entry
functionality where video is not required.
Key features include a sleek, contemporary
design to fit discreetly into its surroundings with
flexible installation (the unit can be wall-mounted
or used with an adjustable desk stand) and it is
available with or without a handset. Action
buttons are configurable for a range of needs and
there is optional connection to a sounder or
accessible call
notification.
Net2 Entry is a
door entry system
that works
standalone or
alongside Paxton's
Net2 access control,
combining door entry
with features of
Net2. It consists of
three components
that auto-detect on
set up; external
Access control unit meets BS 8607 grade 5 standards
Unionhas launched CodeGUARD 5, an access control device available to meet the BS 8607 grade 5
standards.
The grade 5 device delivers a ‘one-stop’ security and access control solution, where the latch and
lock are integrated and tested together. As a result, CodeGUARD 5 offers users an automatic
deadlocking unit, whereas a grade 4 product is reliant on key holders to lock a door.
Featuring BSI Kitemark certification, CodeGUARD 5 provides access control and security in a single package,
delivering assured protection for securing people, assets and data, while offering the convenience of access
control without the need for wiring.
One of CodeGUARD 5’s key features is its 20mm deadlocking latch. This means it will not succumb to the kind of
physical attacks that mechanical push button locks typically undergo, such as a crowbar being placed between a
frame and lock to force a door open.
Furthermore, the mechanical push button lock system is secured through more than 2,000 code combinations.
The unit is also always supplied to customers with a passcode different to the standard factory
settings, for optimal security.
The system has undergone a salt spray test for 240 hours to demonstrate its capabilities in
highly corrosive environments and is suitable for 30- and 60-minute timber fire doors, and 240-
minute metal fire doors. www.uniononline.co.uk/codeguard5
EVC system for
additional safety
Kentec Electronics has launched the Safe-
Point Emergency Voice Communication
(EVC) System designed to provide
additional safety to people with reduced
mobility in emergency situations.
Commonly known as a disabled refuge
system, the Safe-Point EVC enables
emergency services or colleagues to
communicate with people awaiting safe
evacuation in designated refuge areas.
This is particularly important during fire events
where the use of elevators is prohibited.
The system consists of a control panel located
in a reception or building manager’s office, and
hands-free communication points in designated
areas on each floor of a building. It is a standalone
product that can be integrated with any fire
panel or building management system (BMS).
The Safe-Point EVC combines all potential
functionality in one system: it is photo
luminescent so highly visible, even in the dark; it
includes braille and tactile identification; it
features an induction loop for the hard of hearing;
it can easily be expanded to include a disabled
toilet alarm; and it is vandal resistant. kentec.co.uk
Full body video redaction
technology launched
Ocucon Pixelate is full body video redaction
technology that allows users to select the
people they do not wish to pixelate before
footage is automatically redacted. A manual
redaction tool allows additional features, such
as car registration numbers or credit card
details to also be redacted.
Businesses and organisations might not
realise that if they record and store CCTV
footage they could be subject to access
requests. Restrictions around personal data
following the introduction of GDPR, can result
in organisations needing to pixelate significant
amounts of footage and the cost of outsourcing
this can be high, says the company. ocucon.com
Upgraded ultra-low-light HD
ruggedised PTZ camera
360 Vision Technology has announced the
release of an upgraded Invictus ultra-low-light
HD ruggedised PTZ camera featuring a further
reduction in power consumption.
Invictus boasts 360 Vision’s ‘Attack Detect’,
that automatically responds to a detected
increase in camera load (such as the camera
being struck by an object). On detection, the
camera’s direct-drive pan and tilt mechanism
instantaneously disengages to prevent damage
to the motor drive. A ‘self-check’ routine then
establishes if the camera has altered its
direction of view during the attack, and an
automatic re-initialisation is triggered -
returning the camera to its last known position
prior to the impact.
Post-attack, the camera returns to its correct
field of view, prior to being forcibly moved. This
means that vital evidential footage will
continue to be captured.
INTERVIEW
Phil West
This month we talk to
Phil West of fire and
security recruitment
agency Zitko
Consulting and
discuss the trends in
the installer
employment sector
Job satisfaction and security
“We're not necessarily
seeing fewer
candidates; I think it's
more that the demand
for the right people to
fill job roles has
increased”
hil West has been at Zitko Consulting for
Paround four and a half years and was the
company’s second hire, after the Director.
He is the Managing Consultant within the
business now, having gone through the roles of
Recruitment Consultant and Senior Consultant.
Phil sat down with PSI to talk about security and
fire recruitment and offered advice for engineers
and employers.
Is the shortage of installers the main
issue for you?
I think it's the same across any technologybased
industry at the moment; there's a
shortage of skilled labour. We're part of a
recruitment group that covers various different
industries and this shortage is certainly
something that has been seen in the research
that has been carried out - it's not only a
problem for the UK, it's a problem
internationally. The fire and security sector is
definitely suffering as a result of this and over
the four and a half years that I've been doing
this job it does seem to be getting harder and
harder to have people available to fill the roles.
We're not necessarily seeing fewer candidates; I
think it's more that the demand for the right
people to fill job roles has increased. So it's
potentially just the mismatch in the number of
candidates versus vacancies. Thinking about it, I
would say we're now seeing the greatest
increase in vacancies for skilled engineers.
Is Brexit a worry?
There is currently an impact due to the
uncertainty about Brexit, particularly with the
better candidates hedging their bets a little bit
and staying where they are, maybe scouting the
market but not fully committing to making
moves.
How have employer requirements
changed?
I think some of the employer expectations are
changing in that we're seeing a greater increase
for more technical positions and a shift into
more IT work as there is an increased
convergence with cybersecurity. People are also
asking for more software skills particularly for
commissioning and application type roles. This
approach is gathering pace compared to the one
that is just aimed at hardware installation and
maintenance. It's been a steady change over
time towards the more PC-based engineer so
there is more of a demand for computer science
graduates; if you look at those that have been in
the industry a long time versus those that are
new to the sector I think it's a different set of
skills.
Are employer expectancies too high?
They can be, many want a multi-skilled engineer
that can do everything, but the employer does
have a big role to play in whether or not a
candidate works out. It can be tricky because all
employers wants the "finished article" when it
comes to engineers and even though we get told
that the right candidate will be trained, which is
the right route to go down, whether it happens
or not is another matter entirely. Over-promising
is not a good way to get the most out of
employees. I can understand it from the
employer's perspective because there is so
much work around, they often can't afford to put
someone on a training course for a week and
cover their work during that time. The
alternative is to pay more to have an engineer
with qualifications than spend time to train
someone up.
In my opinion, training is a brilliant thing to
offer employees and it is certainly sought after
by the engineers and it's beneficial for
companies to have that person with certification
because they know what they are doing, can
solve more problems and generally be better at
their job for having gone on the course. In some
circumstances having more qualified engineers
means that you're more likely to win certain
tenders, so I think it is possible to gain back any
expenses of training quite easily.
What is a typical mistake that employers
make?
Business owners and employer can often
assume their company is well-known so they
shouldn't have a problem filling a vacancy.
Unfortunately apart from a handful of larger
installers, this is not the case, so you can't rely
on your reputation to bring in the engineers.
Employers need to consider why somebody
would want to work for them and why the
people they already employ stay with them.
They need to tap into what that is and if
22
www.psimagazine.co.uk
employers get that right then staff stay on
because they hire the personality that's right
not just the most skilful applicant. We monitor
retention rates of our placed candidates and
clearly see that those hired primarily on cultural
suitability stay longer with their new employer.
Any advice for engineers looking for a
new role?
In my previous job, not in recruitment, I
wouldn't have thought about using an agency,
but having worked on this side of the industry
for nearly five years I can see why recruitment
agencies are ideal for people looking to move
on. Again it's all about using your time wisely
and because we know what companies are
doing in terms of systems, projects and
environments, we can help simplify and
streamline the whole process. For example, if
you are motivated by training we know which
companies are genuine about putting you on
training courses, or if you want to become a
project manager, we know the companies that
are most likely to offer that instead of those that
might just offer more money but not in the role
you want. Salaries are going through the roof at
the moment, especially in London, so the money
is there, but can you find the position you really
want on your own?
We never want people to move when they're
not ready and we try to ensure people explore
every opportunity at their current company. If
you are working in the right company you
should stay there, yet if you've got certain
frustrations, whatever that might be then there
is another company out there that will probably
be offering you what you want.
Do some installers have an inflated
opinion of their worth?
With the widespread use of LinkedIn and job
boards installers are constantly being told that
"we need someone like you" which is leading
some to expect more money/benefits than is
actually available, or what they truly warrant. By
being a sought-after commodity, or being led to
think they are, is giving some people a skewed
view of the market and their market value. That
said, if demand outstrips supply in any market
prices go up. This is no different.
You are exhibiting at SiX in Manchester,
so how does the North compare?
The main difference is with salaries - of course
Phil West (left) and the Zitko Consulting team
London is the busiest market at the moment
with lots of job availabilities and competition,
but there is still plenty out there for people
looking in those areas (Midlands/North) which
is why SiX is so important for us.
What do you think's going to happen in
the future?
Security technology generally follows the path
of the IT industry and adopts the innovations
that come through. There will continue to be a
technology convergence with cyber being an
increasing concern for electronic security
systems and we're hearing more and more
about companies wanting to integrate
technologies for data collection and utilising
artificial intelligence tools. I see the future of
the industry becoming more and more
technical, more IT focused and more about
systems being blended together. This is
probably why we've seen several people move
into security from IT and do really, really well.
They can progress much faster and their skills
are much sought after.
There are going to be a lot more people with
an IT skillset coming into the industry rather
than coming from the traditional electrician
background and there perhaps will be a more
degree-focused experience in some areas
pulling away a little bit from the
apprenticeships. Having said that, I would
encourage as many companies as possible to
be doing apprenticeships because it always
makes a brilliant engineer and helps bring in
young talent.
Batteries not included?
Often the security market follows that of the IT sector or the consumer
sector so could we soon see professional cameras powered by
batteries? We’ve got them in the DIY market already so is the technology
good enough for commercial use? The PSI Panel deliberates...
Battery powered surveillance cameras
already have a presence in the DIY market
but could they play a part in the
professional arena as a simpler alternative to
PoE/wiring? The batteries might make cameras
more expensive to buy and require
changing/charging, but they would certainly
allow flexibility of location and easy installation
if combined with secured Wi-Fi connectivity.
David Davies – DVS
What an interesting topic
indeed, I remember talking
just recently to someone at a
show about this.
So it really depends on how
you look at this and what
angle we want to use. Looking
at this from an installer point of view then of
course some would welcome such technology, it
would reduce installation and setup time ( most
likely of course) and become almost a rapid
deployment architecture, they can charge the
customer an on-going cost for battery swap out
services and monitoring , as such devices would
require monitoring to show battery life and
expectancy and then a reactive service to
change the battery to keep the device online.
Let’s not forget a battery device in the CCTV
world is not a fit and forget unit, not in the
professional sense anyway. So this would open
a new revenue stream up for some installers, of
course many may not want this on-going type of
contract or service, and it will never in my eyes
replace hardwired systems - battery life
currently is limited albeit this may change.
For now we have to think of what application
these could be used in realistically where a
short battery life would be expected with
limiting functions like range, network
communication and installation scenario. We
also do have to consider where the camera
might be fitted. If it’s fitted at the top of a tower
and requires access equipment to change the
battery then the economics of doing this really
don’t stack up against a traditional hardwired
system. And high powered IR , Laser IR , PTZ
motors, VCA analysis audio in and out all take
too much power to be realistic on current
battery life, but that’s not to say Duracell won’t
invent a spent nuclear powered fuel cell that
would work for any application. Now that is a
whole new article....
“With increased use,
as we have seen
across the security
portfolio, it is perhaps
inevitable that battery
operated surveillance
technology will
evolve. We are
already seeing camera
manufacturers claim
that battery life can be
up to two years”
26
(from previous page)
The increased popularity and attention
placed on surveillance products in the
residential market, especially with the smart
automation capability, follows significant
developments in commercial CCTV placement.
We are also seeing new opportunities
opening up to use of surveillance equipment,
whether it be to capture illegal dumping or antisocial
behaviour.
For motorists as well, uptake on surveillance
technology is increased to capture those using
mobile phones whilst driving or breaking red
lights. In these situations, battery / Bluetooth /
WiFi cameras will assist greatly.
So currently, battery operated surveillance
technology does not have the required
maintenance to allow for long term
‘professional’ programmes, relying heavily on
stretched personnel to change the batteries and
maintain longevity and quality. The issue is
compounded by the increased risk of tampering
and battery theft.
But with increased use, as we have seen
across the security portfolio, it is perhaps
inevitable that battery operated surveillance
technology will evolve. We are already seeing
camera manufacturers claim that battery life can
be up to two years.
After all, if you’d have asked if there would
ever be a battery powered car or motorbike that
could reach motorway speed, (or even get to the
motorway without running out of power,) the
answer would once upon a time have been ‘no.’
Now we have electric cars that can do 0-60 in
2.4secs and almost 200mph, and not even
mentioning Formula E!
Bill Hobbs – 3xLOGIC
Battery powered security
cameras are increasingly on
the radars of integrators and
end users – that said, their
suitability as part of an overall
surveillance system ultimately
depends on the application
they are being used for.
In domestic or small commercial premises
there’s no doubt battery powered devices could
be an appropriate solution, due to their low
initial cost and ease of installation. For
applications that involve life safety and/or
remote monitoring though, it’s likely that a
hardwired option would be required. When used
for alarm verification it is important that a
camera has ‘always on’ status and the
possibility of downtime due to a flat battery is a
risk not worth taking. That’s not to say that a
loss of mains power can’t affect hardwired
devices, although there are other ways to
mitigate that particular scenario.
Total cost of ownership is also an important
consideration, as replacing batteries can be
expensive and there is maintenance to consider
too. This includes regularly checking battery
status and the general condition of the device
itself. Over a short period of time this figure
might seem inconsequential but over the course
of many years it could negate any initial cost
savings against a hardwired system.
It is true that the trend for recurring revenue
makes the low initial purchase price of battery
powered cameras attractive to installers. It
means they can keep the time and costs
associated with deployment as low as possible,
and make profit more quickly.
Along with battery life, hardware security,
live view delays and video quality can be
significant issues, however, we must not dismiss
battery-based cameras out of hand, as they are
still relatively new. Many people had negative
opinions of wireless based internet protocol
systems when they first entered the market but
over the years they have improved and become
accepted – even by standards bodies. Battery
technology is advancing rapidly, led by the
www.psimagazine.co.uk
automotive sector, and this will eventually
trickle down to other industries, including
security. Therefore, it’s very much a case of
watching this space.
Tim Edmonds –
Comelit UK
A professionally installed
security system, should be
designed from the outset to
achieve its objectives from a
visual and audio perspective.
But at the same time, it should
also ensure it is robust in design and installed
with redundancy in mind, to mitigate failure.
Here is where, from a commercial
perspective, battery powered devices can be the
weak link, in design and maintenance. Any
‘battery powered’ resource would require a
process whereby either the end user, or the
system operator, would need to ensure it is
always sufficiently charged.
The second issue is making sure any battery
installed is regularly replaced to maintain
maximum charge capacity for the intended use
and design. For resource stretched facility and
security teams, this constant requirement to
monitor the battery status is not an efficient use
of time.
Budgets are also likely to be a considered
factor and any potential cost savings made
initially by choosing a battery operated system
is likely to be cancelled in this respect. Last but
not least, there is the environmental
considerations of choosing battery operated
systems and how to dispose of old batteries in a
sustainable fashion.
However, it’s not all negative, and the answer
is not a clear outright, ‘no.’ There is room to
suggest that for residential settings, where even
Police are recommending homeowners to install
surveillance equipment to decrease burglary
risk, battery powered security cameras can meet
the objectives.
Naturally, the cost element is a big factor
here, but there is also the opportunity for
homeowners to ‘build up’ their surveillance as
they see fit into the creation of a smart home, or
as required to protect their property. This would
still be whilst working closely with installers to
gain practical advice on how, where, when and
what surveillance products to fit, to provide the
quick, mobile friendly view, as and when
required.
Battery powered security
appliances combined with
advancements in the latest
power technology is allowing
many innovative solutions to
come to the security market.
Currently the main application
we see these utilised are temporary or mobile
installations, however large heavy batteries and
limited run times are concerns in any temporary
/ mobile installation. The main issue is current
day batteries only last approx. 8 hours until they
need a recharge, so you would never want it as
your core power source long-term.
Many specialist manufactures are now
incorporating green energy systems such as
Solar / Wind power to extend the life of the
battery-operated systems, however we are
always relying on environmental factors to give
us boosts in power which are not always
available at the times needed.
I think we are some way off professional
surveillance going down the battery route. In
the current day, new Ideas are being created for
battery related solutions however they are
limited in their functionality resulting in the idea
being unable to grow. Current day batteries just
aren’t capable of the job, with the advancement
of improved batteries and technologies who’s to
say what the future will hold but for the
foreseeable I think the only battery-operated
surveillance will be for the DIY consumer
market.
Laurence Kenny –
Pyronix
This will be a route introduced
initially within the domestic
setting. In this scenario,
battery-operated cameras or
doorbells is the future.
Fully wireless batterypowered
cameras linking to the router provides
good time-saving advantages for the installer,
as well as good value to the end user; with an
installation that saves the upheaval of homes
where running cables would be the only way to
power the camera.
This doesn’t provide the same level of
security as a mains-powered or PoE solution,
however, that certainly shouldn’t preclude it
from being ‘professional’.
The value of professional installers setting it
up, maintaining it, linking it through to the app
for video verification, building in-cloud storage
etc. does present value to end users. Is it going
to protect a bank, no. Does that mean it can’t
be through a professional channel, absolutely
not.
As technological advancements continue to
speed up exponentially, most industries move
towards either a simpler solution, a solution
with more capabilities, or, in an ideal world,
both as technology evolves.
Whether the evolution is with wireless
intruder alarm systems, which has enjoyed
phenomenal growth since around 2004 in
domestic applications and more recently in
commercial, or whether this will be in
consumer-led industries such as the smart
phone market, where a single pocket-sized
device has taken the role of a phone, camera,
laptop and music player. These are great
examples of the drive for change.
In both cases the change has come about
due to two cooperating factors. Firstly,
manufacturer innovation. Huge leaps in
technology, including better battery technology
is allowing devices to do more, while advances
in radio signal performance provide greater
range and bandwidth.
Secondly, consumer driven innovation. The
evolutions have and are perfectly timed
alongside the need for efficiency. Whether this
is the ability to install more intruder alarm
systems within a day, or to be connected 24/7
while browsing the internet and listening to
music. More than ever before people want
more, they want faster and they want it cheaper.
Technology will continue to evolve;
improving and becoming more cost-effective,
while the installing engineer’s time will become
more expensive. As the cost of living increases
and consumer demand dictates, a simpler
solution with “no wires or mess” will be
championed.
Fifteen years on from 2004, when we saw
the start of real growth in wireless intruder
alarms, those installers refusing to embrace
the technology have either had to change their
minds or become extinct.
The security industry must embrace this
advance into the unknown of a professional
fully-wireless battery-operated visual
surveillance platform, just as they have with
intruder alarms.
Offering more than security
Technology has become an
important aspect of ensuring
safety and security in retail says
Emelie Säll of Axis
hen discussing safety and security in
Wretail, one area that needs to be
considered is access control as it is
crucial to know who is on-site should an
emergency happen. With many retailers now
having unmanned loading/delivery bays that
are accessed by third parties and employees, it
is vital everyone can be accounted for should an
evacuation situation occur, such as a fire.
Unauthorised access is also an area that
needs to be closely monitored to avoid
malicious activity by those who could gain
access to a retail area. Imagine, for example, if a
disgruntled ex-employee in a grocery store
gained access to the stock room and tampered
with food products that were then purchased by
customers and consumed – the extent of the
hazards this could cause is unimaginable.
Access control also plays a massive part in
employee safety and security. For example,
someone may be counting a large sum of
takings in the store’s cash room. Criminals may
be aware that this process happens, either from
monitoring the store or from insider information,
and target the cash room at that time. By having
suitable access control for sensitive or restricted
areas, if someone tries to gain access to the
area, the employee can check it is safe to grant
them access, reducing the risk of both their
safety and the security of the contents of the
room being compromised.
The safety and security of customers visiting
the store is also of paramount importance.
Surveillance cameras with on-board analytics
can be used to identify certain cues and trigger
an alert that can be acted upon as needed. If
there is an immediate risk, such as a fire,
security can use cameras to see where there is a
safe evacuation route and, using public
announcement systems, direct those out of the
store safely and efficiently.
Cameras and analytics can also be used to
spot potential dangers, which, once identified
an attendant can remove the risk.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Our 24-hour society means more stores are
open all night and in remote locations. This can
be unnerving for potential customers who may
(rightly or wrongly) assume late night, remote
stores could attract a more edgy clientele. By
having surveillance in place, they are more
likely to feel safer and more secure, which has
the added benefit of continuing sales
throughout the night.
With remote locations, there may be fewer
patrons, so store workers may often be alone
with only one customer. To increase their safety
and security in what could be a vulnerable
situation, cameras with audio analytics can be
used to detect aggression and send an alert to
the central operator, who can verify the risk via
the camera. This is especially important
because in a violent situation it may not be
possible for the store worker to alert authorities
and the automatic detection significantly
shortens the response time should help be
required.
Similarly, remote stores could be a more
attractive target for vandalism and crime, as the
perpetrators are less likely to be disturbed and
caught. In this case, surveillance in parking lots
can identify those loitering, therefore alerting
the store owner to potential criminal acts, such
as vandalism, a break in or the possible
intention of robbing a clerk who may be closing
up and taking away the day’s earnings to be
cashed the next day.
These are just a few examples of the safety
and security considerations today’s retails face.
Surveillance is more important than ever for
ensuring retail safety and security.
SECURITY
The changing threat
The spotlight on IT security will never dull as long as we have people trying
to deliberately attack systems. The frailty of DIY systems doesn’t help the
cause when it comes to the public image of IP technology
You may not have noticed it happening, but
there are plenty of people in the workforce
today that have never been employed by a
company that boasted a typing pool, a telex
operator or an information dept/library. All of the
latter have been replaced by computers and smart
devices and we take for granted what we can
achieve sitting at a screen (when was the last time
you needed someone to type up a letter for you or
send a fax?) and we are all connected 24/7.
This gradual change which saw us all become
more IT savvy and less in need of a secretary has
happened alongside our recognition of the need
for IT security. We know about security when
online and know all about anti-virus and malware
protection yet despite our having been involved
with the IT growth since the days of BBC
computers and Basic programs there are still
some levels where security is lacking through
complacency.
First off however we should recognise that the
threats we face from malicious attacks have
evolved as much as the IT we use. While fewer
businesses are suffering cyberattacks or
breaches, attacks are becoming more costly and
targeted, according to the latest government
figures. The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2019
shows that around one in three businesses (32
per cent) was a victim of an attack or breach in the
past twelve months. While this is lower than in
2018 (when it was 43 per cent) and in 2017 (46
per cent), those who were victims typically
reported facing six attacks, compared to two in
2017.
The figures from the Department for Digital,
Culture, Media and Sport also show that phishing
attacks (identified by 80 per cent of victims) and
others impersonating an organisation (28 per
cent) - both of which rely on human error - are
now more common that viruses, spyware or
malware attacks (27 per cent).
The report says businesses have increased
their defences but suggests that attacks are
becoming more focused. Jon Abbott, CEO of IT
services provider Priority One and founder of
cybersecurity platform ThreatAware, says the
figures reflect the trends the industry is already
seeing.
"Attacks are becoming more targeted and
costly and cybercriminals are becoming more
sophisticated. As IT teams shore up their
defences, attackers are choosing softer targets
and preying on people instead. They recognise
that humans are now the weakest link and
increasingly the targets are directors and senior
decision makers.
"It demonstrates that cybersecurity is no
longer just an IT issue but a company-wide
challenge, one which involves people throughout
the organisation and needs to be overseen at
board level."
The report shows that 30 per cent of attacks
had a negative outcome, resulting in loss of data
or assets with the average (mean) cost to the
business being £4,180, higher than in 2018
(£3,160) and 2017 (£2,450).
Around three in four businesses (78 per cent)
say cybersecurity is now a high priority for senior
management - up from 74 per cent last year. One
in three businesses (33 per cent) now has a
written cybersecurity policy, 27 per cent have had
staff attend training in the past twelve months;
and 56 per cent have implemented the five types
of controls recommended in the government's
Cyber Essentials scheme - all up on last year's
figures.
The report says GDPR has helped to change
behaviour, with 30% having made some type of
change as a result, but it has also led to
organisations focusing on data breaches rather
than wider risks. They might need to ‘think more
holistically about the issue' and could do more -
only 35 per cent have a board member
responsible for cybersecurity.
“As IT teams shore up
their defences,
attackers are
choosing softer
targets and preying
on people instead.
They recognise that
humans are now the
weakest link”
SECURITY
(from previous page)
Jon Abbott adds: "Dealing with the changing
threat landscape requires a more integrated
approach than before. Patching, web browsing
protection and anti-virus software are critical but
businesses also need the right policies,
procedures and culture.
"As cybercrime becomes more complex,
boards need to lead the fightback and work
closely with IT teams and managers throughout
the organisation to ensure they are in the best
possible position to defeat themselves against
the threats."
And one area that, as an installer, you will be
all too familiar is that of passwords. We know that
changing default passwords is a must and we
know that using different passwords is also highly
important although when you have to remember
so many passwords and user names it’s no
surprise that we see plenty of cases of data
breaches hit the media – which none of us want.
Whenever a DIY surveillance system is
‘hacked’ it throws a bad light over the whole
networked camera sector. The cases of baby
monitors and webcams being accessed by
outsiders do nothing to promote professional IP
systems, a concern you will no doubt have had to
explain to customers at some point. In the
majority of these cases it is a case of the default
We are now at a position where many of the
latest generation coming into the sector know
more about IT than those leaving the sector
password not being changed and no encryption
being used that causes the problem. Fortunately
professional camera manufacturers have taken
major leaps forward in their solutions to combat
IT insecurities.
But maybe the industry itself was a little
complacent early on with the security of security
systems in the initial development of IP systems.
Did we spend so long competing over who had
the highest resolution camera or who had the
fanciest app that the security element of the
system was relegated down the list of important
factors? Fortunately today we are in a strong
position to compete against DIY networked
systems when it comes to security and even if the
‘attacks’ become more sophisticated we have
plenty of cyber awareness compared to the
average homeowner who buys a system online
and expects it to be secure without personalising
the solution and using the default settings.
Of course, many of you don’t just work for a
business, you own it too and you can go one step
further than making sure you install secure
systems by getting yourselves approved by a
scheme such as the aforementioned Cyber
Essentials that looks at the company as a whole.
There are five companies appointed as
Accreditation Bodies for assessing and certifying
against the Government's Cyber Essentials
Scheme. The Scheme focuses on the five most
important technical security controls. According
to one of the appointed companies, IASME, these
controls were identified by the government as
those that, if they had been in place, would have
stopped the majority of the successful
cyberattacks over the last few years.
The evolution to a position where we are all
familiar with IT and the need for security around
all connected devices has happened over the last
two decades and we are now at a position where
many of the latest generation coming into the
sector know more about IT than those leaving the
sector. We’re more IT aware than ever, which
means that those wishing to do harm over IP are
also high on the same scale. If you are networking
technology then all steps must be taken to avoid
a problem that, with the global impact and speed
of social media, can do so much harm. The old
saying “there’s no such thing as bad news” is no
longer apparent with the power of social media.
People no longer need any proof before they
make claims online so your reputation can be
damaged beyond repair before you know it – even
if you are free of blame.
The security of security systems is always
going to be an issue. From the first time a camera
was connected via the Web to where we are today
every step must be taken to secure the system –
there’s too much to lose by being soft on security.
BENCHMARK
EVENT
Exhibition space selling out!
SiX
2 19
November 5/6
In Association with:
This year sees the inaugural installer
event SiX at EventCity in
Manchester in November. Here we
continue our preview of what is in
store for those attending and reveal
yet more organisations joining up to
support the show
As we have discussed previously,SiX is
aimed squarely at the security installer and
system integrator. Running on 5-6th
November 2019, the event will offer a noncommercial
conference programme alongside
an exhibition at EventCity Manchester. In
addition, the annual PSI Premier Awards Dinner
will be held on the evening of 5th November.
There are a number of reasons why PSI
publisher Pro-Activ took the decision to host the
show including the location, the timing and the
installer audience which has told us for some
time that they want their own event.
Exhibitor approval for SiX
At the time of this publication going to press
over 70% of the exhibition stand space had
been sold. This is a phenominal achievement for
a show in its first year, especially given the fact
that there are all-encompassing industry events
out there to exhibit at - which, according to PSI
editor Andy Clutton indicates the appeal of a
focussed event such as SiX:
“We have been asked many times over the
years to hold an installer-only event because we
were told installers wanted a show that they
could call their own. However, until we actually
started to promote SiX we didn’t know if the
appeal of such an event would be universal
across the security sector. We have been
amazed at the reaction so far and the backing
we have from the likes of SSAIB, NSI, BSIA, FSA
and FIA backs up the desire for the event.
“With SiX I think there is an attraction for
exhibitors because there in no wastage. By that
I mean there are no end user shows being cohosted
alongside that have no appeal for the
security installer. While hosting another show
would boost the visitor stats they don’t really
relate to potential business for those exhibiting.
People are reallty getting onboard with SiX.”
“As SiX is dedicated to installers
we see it as the ideal platform to
engage with them. Furthermore,
Manchester is a great meeting
point for the Midlands and the
North while being well connected
by public transport to the South of
the country. We hope to have the
opportunity to discuss the new
products we are bringing to the
market with the installers,
understand what we could do more
to better support them, and to
catch up with some familiar
faces from the industry and meet
some new faces too.”
– Ben Linklater, Optex Europe
“We feel that SiX is an event that
will attract the installer
community and, as such, we
believe there is an opportunity in
the “event” space in the UK for
such an exhibition. Manchester
is a good venue; well-located
with easy access for both
exhibitors and visitors” –
Nick Quigley, HKC Security
“We decided to exhibit at SiX
because it is being hosted by PSI
magazine and we felt confident
the exposure to installers would
be good. It will be the first time
we have exhibited in Manchester
so it represents a great
opportunity for us to reach out to
new installers with our latest
range of products. Hopefully we
will bring on a couple of new
companies and expand our brand
even further.”
Meet the installer
What would be a typical project for you?
I don’t think there’s a security installer who would
ever say there’s a typical project. We have a lot of
domestic installations and, because of where
we’re based, many of these are large domestic
properties with fully integrated systems covering
intruder, CCTV, fire and access control. However,
I’d say the larger and faster growing area for us is
commercial installations. We have a lot of estate
managers and project leads who use us for
multiple projects and we get a lot of referrals from
them, so we’re very fortunate.
What is the best thing about working in
security?
The sheer range of people that you work with is
amazing. It’s lovely that every day is totally
different. One day we’ll be dealing with customers
who have been with us for over 30 years and the
next day, we’re managing an industrial warehouse
– the diversity is great.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Yes, I do believe it’s increasingly important for a
number of reasons. Where NSI Gold accreditation
matters, for example, is that it holds us to an
exceptionally high standard internally which we
find beneficial and which means customers will
get the best service and the best products.
Do you think there is a skills shortage in
the industry? Any trouble recruiting?
We have an interesting challenge in that the
specific skills we need for roles like Surveyor are
pretty tricky to attract to the Cotswolds, despite
the beauty of the location. We’re in the heart of
the Cotswolds which isn’t a hotspot for surveyors
and engineers! Luckily, we’ve got an amazing
team, many of whom have been with us for
several years so whenever we’re recruiting, we
often end up getting referrals. We’re also
passionate about apprenticeships and I don’t
think the industry is good enough in supporting
technical apprenticeships in our area specifically.
Especially now that engineering is so complex –
long gone are the days where we could have
engineers specialising in different disciplines.
Now all our engineers need to know how an
intruder alarm from 1985 works right through to
the latest app for our CCTV systems or how to
install a fire system.
together raising standards
“There’s a
misperception that
what we, as
professional security
installers, provide can
be replicated by
something you buy
online and install
yourself”
(continued from previous page)
Are there any common requests from
customers that give you problems?
By far, the biggest challenge we have is when
we’ve quoted for work and then customers aren’t
ready to move ahead and then suddenly it’s
urgent – usually when we’re working to a few
weeks’ lead time so we end up shuffling diaries to
accommodate. Luckily, we’ve got an amazing team
who can adapt and flex so we’ve never had a
situation that can’t be fixed and it keeps us all on
our toes.
What is the security industry’s biggest
myth?
That you can buy a bespoke professional system
on the internet. There’s a misperception that what
we, as professional security installers, provide
can be replicated by something you buy online
and install yourself. You can’t replicate the quality
of a professionally installed system, or the
expertise of those qualified to install it. You get
what you pay for.
What will be the impact of smart/home
automation on the security sector?
It’s an interesting time for professional security
companies as there’s compression at both ends.
We can see a massive surge in popularity for DIY
jobs at one end and then a desire for top of the
range integrated smart home systems at the
other. I think, in the next ten years, there’ll be a
lot of consolidation and acquisitions. Any
installer, who wants to make it through, will need
to be thinking about who to partner with to
ensure seamless integration of home automation
features into security panels and equipment. It
will be a key differentiator for customers who
simply want to watch their dog whilst they’re at
work versus customers who want and need a
professionally installed smart security system.
Are you concerned about Brexit?
We do think there will be an impact on our
imports and delivery time scales and have already
made some changes but, like everyone, no-one
really knows the true extent to which it will impact
business or even if it will ever happen at this rate.
What would make your job easier?
Time travel or cloning... or both! If I could get to
the office with the click of a finger or have
engineers in two places at once, my job would be
far easier...
What is your ultimate/fantasy electronic
security product?
I love technology and, in particular, get excited
about new CCTV developments, so a product that
naturally integrates video analytics, I’d love it.
Even better if it integrates with biometric led
access control features or voice activated smart
home features.
What advice would you give to a younger
version of yourself?
Be bold and brave – stand by your convictions...
but you must ALWAYS be polite!
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
Of course. England Women’s! I do think England
Men’s will do it too. The younger squad have more
desire so I think we’re on the right path.
If you won £25,000 what would you do with
the money?
We believe strongly in work life balance and
encouraging employees to enjoy time with their
families in order to remain happy and healthy. So,
I think we’d probably spend some of it on some
family time for staff and then perhaps donate the
remaining to a mental health charity as that’s a
cause we support wholeheartedly as a business.
Advances in video analytics
are transforming security
Within the physical security industry, there has
historically been a disciplinary distinction between
video surveillance, intrusion detection and access control solutions.
Although these solutions could be integrated by a by single
management system or designed to work together, there was
usually little crossover in functionality.
As security technology has advanced, the range of tasks that
each discipline can perform has increased. However, this change
stands out most in video surveillance. Due to both the visual nature
of the medium and the rapid growth of processing and analytical
power, video surveillance solutions can now perform functions that
were once the domain of other security disciplines. Rapid
technological advances have also vastly increased the level of
automation within video surveillance systems to process events, detection and responses.
Video is well suited to analytics and automation. If we can detect specific events or actions from a video feed, we can also
respond to them. For example, a passive infrared (PIR) sensor can indicate motion, but it cannot see or identify what is moving.
In contrast, a surveillance camera with analytics software can not only see the motion, but also provide a visual of the objects
that are moving and indicate which one caused the alarm.
Video analytics can also be used to monitor and alert security to suspicious behavior, such as loitering. If a person remains in
a restricted area for too long, analytics can detect and report the occurrence so that corrective action can be taken. In this
scenario, advances in video analytics provide for automated detection that would historically not have been possible.
Another example of how video analytics can improve upon traditional building systems can be seen in license plate
recognition. The typical vehicle access control system requires human intervention to validate the vehicle and driver before
granting them access to the property. Video-based license plate recognition can automatically allow
access to authorized vehicles, while alerting staff to visitors. Additionally, combining automatic
license plate recognition with video-based perimeter security and anti-loitering technology, provides
a very capable automated system all derived from the one technology.
IDIS makes network security a
manageable complexity
Most often, network security breaches are not caused by the
exploitation of encryption technology weaknesses. Rather,
they are mostly the result of human factors, such as not
enforcing network security best practices. For example, when
an organization deploys a video management system (VMS)
with 300 IP cameras, the installer needs to manage around
300 IP addresses, 300 MAC addresses, and 300 login credentials for each IP
device. This creates a high level of complexity to manage throughout the whole lifecycle of the system.
Most IP cameras now ask users to change the login credentials at the first login, with upper and lower case letters, numbers,
and special characters. However, when you have 300 separate logins, installers often do one of two things: use a single login for
all 300 cameras or create separate logins and record them in an Excel spreadsheet—both of which make the system very easy to
breach. IDIS has eliminated this complexity and designed its Total Solution with network security in mind. DirectIP utilises true
plug-and-play with the implicit pairing of devices, and in doing so, the system reduces the amount of information that needs to
be managed. This is also the case for multi-site applications through our For Every Network
(FEN) technology.
The registration (i.e. pairing) of IDIS IP cameras and NVRs is implicit and hidden from
users, like a Bluetooth headset paired with a mobile phone; once paired, the headset
communicates exclusively with the paired phone. Using this approach, IDIS ensures that
installers do not have to manage the device, minimizing the level of human risk during
implementation. This is a huge benefit because it can easily reduce the complexity by 30-
60fold. A user only needs to manage one IP device, the NVR.
Great reception for Inner Range at
Intersec 2019
There are many trade shows in the security calendar. But Intersec
2019, hosted in Dubai in January, was a special
one for Inner Range because it was the
company’s first time as an exhibitor.
“We took part with our new parent-company, Anixter, and got the chance to show off our
latest hardware and software to potential Middle Eastern clients,” said General Manager
Tim Northwood. “Intesec was a huge event with more than 1,550 exhibitors but I’m
delighted to say that despite considerable competition from around the globe, Inner Range was a hit with delegates.
“The time flew as we completed demonstration after demonstration. Our team showcased all elements of our award-winning
access control and intruder detection system, Integriti. This included demonstrating how security staff can check the validity of
people’s credentials with a Mobile Reader app, which allows staff to use their mobile phone to read security passes anywhere
on site. When valid cards are read, corresponding photo ID appears for easy checking and security staff can suspend credentials
if need be. Another demonstration showed how our Mimic Viewer provides a visual ‘read only’ overview of Integriti allowing
security staff to view events remotely without passing control of the system off-site.” Visit: www.innerrange.co.uk
The smart way for a more
efficient video security project
The time consuming and costly task of planning,
configuration, installation and reporting of a video
security project has just been made simple by a very clever app from
Bosch, Project Assistant.
Designed and developed by Bosch Security Systems to assist system
integrators, the Project Assistant app is available to download for free from
various App stores for installation on desktop, tablet and smartphone
devices, and works on Apple, Windows and Google platforms. We wanted it
to be accessible to everyone, because everyone should be benefiting from the control, transparency and efficiency made
possible by the Project Assistant app at every phase of a video security project.
Now, project set-up and pre-configuration can start in the office without the physical camera. Only
the project plans, IP addresses and a password from the client are required for the system integrator
to create a new project via the app (or an Excel-compatible file format), with the option to set up per
camera, or multiple cameras at once.
IFSEC 2019
IFSEC shows you how…
This year, IFSEC International is
again featuring the Show Me How
programme aimed squarely at
installers. Here we take a look at the
components of the 2019 campaign
The IFSEC International security seminar and
conference programme is always a big
attraction, however of special interest to
installers is the Show Me How programme which
gives a deeper look at security technology in
terms of installation and maintenance.
To define the content of the Show Me How
programme, IFSEC organisers UBM asked
hundreds of security professionals what they
wanted to see at the event and also to state what
security concerns keep them up at night. The key
responses were:
• “Show me how to install the kit – what does it
do? How does it help?”
• “Show me the vendors I can trust.”
• “Show me the future, I’m developing
strategies into 2025.”
• “Show me how my business can move into
different areas, introduce me to new revenue
streams.”
• “I know what the tech is, show me what it can
do.”
• “Show me the possibilities and the
capabilities.”
• “Show me how to take advantage of emerging
opportunities.”
IFSEC 2019 has been built around these
requests with a three-day Show Me How agenda
with sessions handpicked for the level of
technical detail and real life know-how they'll
provide. Show Me How also extends to other
attractions such Speaker’s Corner where solution
providers showcase their products in 15-minute
time slots, then take questions on their
innovations in 10 minute Q&A sessions.
The Show Me How programme encompasses
more than just the seminar and conference
programme, but encompasses everything at the
show, with hand selected Show Me How
exhibitors, technical stand personnel, and
product demonstrations. Here we list some of the
other attractions in the programme:
Keynote Arena
The IFSEC International security seminar and
conference programme was dramatically
overhauled in 2018, with the new Keynote Arena
playing host to an inspiring series of
presentations placed at the heart of the event.
Visitors can improve their security strategy, learn
from real-life case studies and get inspired by
some of the industry’s most influential figures at
the Keynote Arena.
Renowned speakers will discuss and debate
some of the most topical and critical issues facing
the security industry, from cybersecurity and
ethical and legal challenges through to
extremism. In 2019, video analytics, AI, machinebased
learning, a year of GDPR, Brexit and
security in smart cities will be among the topics
covered, all overseen by returning chair Frank
Gardner.
For visitors and exhibitors alike, the Keynote
Theatre provides the tools to remain at the
forefront of the security industry. Most
importantly, the topics on show here are chosen
by the industry itself, drawing from suggestions
made by IFSEC visitors. As a result, the theatre
remains timely, relevant and essential.
The Future of Security Theatre
The Future of Security Theatre courtesy of IFSEC
education partner Tavcomallows visitors to
access a programme of education dedicated to
the ideas, products and innovations driving the
development of the security industry. Experts and
industry leaders will share a vision of the
The Converged Security Centre
One of the highlights from IFSEC 2018, the
Converged Security Centre returns to this year’s
show on an even bigger and better platform to
showcase the latest in integrated security
management technology.
Conceived and delivered by Vidsys, the centre
is a demonstration area which highlights the
advancement of Converged Security Information
Management (CSIM) and how software, hardware
and all forms of information media can be used to
gain a complete overview of a developing security
situation.
Each day at IFSEC 2019, the Converged
Security Centre will present a range of simulated
security scenarios. These will relate to situations
such as transport, utilities, open spaces and
infrastructure, and reveal how integrated security
Following its launch at IFSEC 2017, the Attack Zone will be back larger and more prominent for
2019, showcasing real-life attack tests on physical and perimeter security products
systems can be aligned with supplementary
information sources such as social media to
provide end users with the whole developing
picture.
The Attack Testing Zone
Enjoy one of IFSEC International’s most
adrenaline-filled features and discover new
LEAVES OTHER TECHNOLOGIES IN THE SHADE
OSDP SETS THE NEW STANDARD FOR SECURE ACCESS CONTROL
Let’s face it, we all know low-frequency 125kHz proximity cards don’t provide any real security. After
all, they can be cloned by anyone in seconds with a simple device from an online store. In reality,
however, Wiegand Protocol is almost as vulnerable. As one ethical hacker puts it,
“Weigand is not just old, it's incredibly insecure”. That brings us to Open Supervised
Device Protocol, a new access control communications standard developed by a
collaboration of the world’s most forward-thinking manufacturers. It’s quite a
mouthful, which is probably why people refer to it as OSDP. Our new Janus C4
Access Control platform fully supports OSDP, which the Security Industry
Association (SIA) now recommends for “any Access Control installations
that require security”.
We think that should be all of them.
Keeping your customers
Research shows that
20% to 70% of new
customers are lost
within the first three
months of acquiring
them. All that hard
earned effort in
winning the new
account just goes to
waste
PSI’s resident business expert Jim
Rathbone advises how you could
Improve your customer experience
and retain your customers
iven that many business owners in the
Gsecurity sector come from an engineering
background, there can be an internal
focus on technology and technical skills. Much
business advice is therefore focused on sales
and marketing and on attracting new customers.
Yet customer retention is of paramount
importance – and this can fall between the
cracks of a dual focus on technical matters and
on sales to new customers.
Research shows that 20% to 70% of new
customers are lost within the first three months
of acquiring them. All that hard earned effort in
winning the new account just goes to waste.
This is not exclusive to the security market.
In the financial services sector, 32% of new
banking customers leave within twelve months
of opening a new account.
So what are the keys to retaining customers
and giving your customers a really positive
experience?
Customer service and
experience are not the same
Customer service is something you provide. It is
the advice and support you give to customers
who are purchasing your products and services.
Customer experience on the other hand is
about what the customer perceives during their
interaction with your business and the emotions
they feel during that time.
Customer service tends to be reactive, such
as how you respond to a customer call-out or a
customer complaint.
Customer experience tends to be proactive
and more about how you anticipate a customer’s
need and the environment you create across the
customer’s journey that generates in the
customer positive feelings, positive perceptions
and a positive overall experience.
Aim to excel
Every business should try to create an
experience that exceeds the customer’s
expectations. This goes beyond merely
satisfying the customer.
When was the last time you experienced
extraordinary customer service? It is probably a
long time ago, if you can remember an occasion
at all. This is because although many companies
want to give a great customer experience, very
few achieve this.
When attending a recent event at the NEC,
my hotel experience was a complete switch off. I
was ignored at the check-in as reception staff
were more interested in talking to each other
than to me, the customer. They looked like they
did not want to be there. The tone of voice was
flat and bored. As a customer I felt disengaged
within minutes.
Correct poor attitudes throughout your
organisation and especially amongst frontline
staff. Recognise individuals in your company
who genuinely care about the customer and
demonstrate good customer service. Remember
to pass on to others positive customer
feedback, especially if it is directly about your
employees.
Develop your vision, values
and standards
Everybody has a role to play in the customer’s
journey: sales, marketing, installation
engineers, project managers, service engineers,
administration and credit collection staff.
Everybody who is involved in the customer
46
www.psimagazine.co.uk
journey needs to buy in to what you are trying to
achieve in serving your customers and in
creating a positive customer experience.
This doesn’t just happen. You have to
articulate the aspects of great customer service
you expect in your business. And you need to
create processes that support that vision and
demonstrate those values.
Take Starbucks and their vision as an
example: “We create inspired moments in each
customer’s day. Anticipate- Connect-
Personalise- Own”
This statement is printed on the inside of
every employee’s apron, and its practical
application is supported by processes such as
their asking for each customer’s name to
personalise each order.
Take Disney and their strong overall sense of
purpose that engages all employees: “We create
happiness, by providing the finest
entertainment for people of all ages,
everywhere.”
Disney’s expert customer service comes from
its carefully designed Quality Service Compass
which includes 4 quality standards: safety,
courtesy, show and efficiency. These standards
guide every employee as they offer quality
customer service.
Develop a clear service vision and set of
values/standards that guide your interaction
with and the customer experience you want to
create for your customers.
Measure and improve
Businesses tend to reach vague conclusions
about the quality of the customer service they
are providing. Few however measure their
efforts. Many consequently overestimate the
service they provide. According to Bain
Consulting, a global strategic consulting group,
80% of surveyed companies claim to give
“superior customer service”. Yet when
customers were asked to rate the service from
these same companies, only 8% agreed that it
was “superior”.
It is important to measure dimensions of
service quality such as – for the security sector:
• Annualised service contract % retention
levels
• First time fix % on call outs
• Speed of providing the quotation after an
onsite survey
• Speed of responding to and resolving a
customer issue or complaint
• Debt over 90 days as % of total debt
• Customer satisfaction score using an online
survey tool after installation completion or
further to a service visit. British Gas is a good
example of a company that does this.
Once you start measuring service quality, you
can develop an improvement action plan. To be
in the business of quality service delivery and
continuous improvement, you need to measure
the service performance, otherwise your
intention and delivery remains vague.
Develop an end-to-end positive
customer experience
This demands attention to detail.
• It requires planning, designing and
embedding an improved process.
• It involves training and coaching staff on how
to give great service at all times.
• It means giving your people the tools to
serve the customers well.
Consider for every stage of the customer
journey; what does the customer expect from
you and how can you meet those expectations in
practical and consistent ways?
Improving your customers’ experience and
retaining your customers are essential for
profitable and sustainable growth.
Correct poor attitudes
throughout your
organisation and
especially amongst
frontline staff
Bespoke video solution
designed for Dublin venue
When Café en Seine was totally redesigned and
refurbished, Create Security Solutions was called
in to provide an extensive but discreet video
surveillance system for the protection of
customers and staff. Create worked with Hikvision
to design and install the network video system.
In the very heart of Dublin’s city centre Café en
Seine has had a redesign, featuring several dining
areas and a host of bars and bespoke event
spaces – plus an indoor Parisian street garden,
with room for 250 guests for special events.
An intelligent video monitoring solution was
required so Create Security Solutions was called
in, and system designers Mark Woods and Niall
McDonnell set about devising a system which
would address Café en Seine’s specific needs.
Mark Woods, who is Create’s Managing
Director, said the system had to be able to deliver
a variety of results, whilst also blending into the
art deco aesthetic of the redesign. It was required
to be able monitor the venue’s till areas, and to
record any customer and staff health and safety
issues, as well as the conventional function of
after-hours surveillance for break-ins or theft.
“At the same time,” Mark explains, “the whole
of the network design, the topology, cable lengths
and routes, the network video recorder and
camera settings needed to minimise the impact on
the network’s bandwidth as much as possible.”
The solution Create devised was based on
network topology using Hikvision H265+ encoding
technology, to reduce bandwidth loads. The other
crucial factor was “plenty of time”. Time was
important, because the system had to be installed
simultaneous with all the redevelopment work
which was taking place to the premises.
“We had to stay on the same page as all the
other workers on the site,” Woods said.
“Obviously there are elements of a system like
this that can only be installed at the appropriate
moment, when contractors and decorators have
reached the point that we can put our kit into
place. So we needed to keep an eye on their work,
and follow-up as they progressed. It meant that
we were assembling the system piece by piece –
Voice is the choice for high
school fire system
A fire safety system upgrade at Harwich and
Dovercourt High School, a mixed secondary
school and sixth form with academy status
serving more than 1,200 students aged 11 to 18
years, has 110 Vimpex Fire-Cryer Voice Sounders
at its heart to help protect students and staff.
The upgrade, installed by life safety systems
specialists Anglia Fire Protection, comprises 24
Vimpex wall-mounted Fire-Cryer and 86 Midi
Fire-Cryer Voice Sounders, with custom built
voice message controllers built to the customer’s
specification.
Fire-Cryer Voice Sounders can be programmed
to produce bespoke messages and tones
but those pieces weren’t necessarily in sequence,
as different contractors worked on different
aspects of the premises concurrently.
“We had to ensure that all 127 cameras we
installed would blend into the interior, that they’d
look unobtrusive and be able to see everything we
needed them to,” says Mark. “The challenge we
had was to ensure we positioned the cameras in
the optimum place to get the best image, while
also making certain nothing would encroach on
the camera’s field of view. That included speakers,
trees, and chandeliers and other lights. Café en
Seine’s pretty generously decorated, from the
floor to the high ceilings, so this was a fairly
complicated part of the process itself.”
Create’s Alex Koltunov was lead engineer on
the project, and he oversaw the installation of the
Hikvision kit. This included the cameras, all
discreet network mini domes which blend into and
complement the interior design of Café en Seine.
The cameras record to four 32-channel network
video recorders, sited in a comms room three
floors above the diners. In the manager’s office is
a 32-inch monitor. Using a mouse and switcher all
127 cameras can be viewed from here.
“We wanted to ensure that there was a
minimum of equipment in the manager’s office,
but that full control of the system was still
possible,” Woods explains. “It’s an efficient use of
the space, without CCTV control equipment
dominating the room. Because of this and the
system itself, the customer’s really happy with the
installation.”
designed for the educational environment. The
advantage of using multi-message voice
sounders in schools is that traditional fire alarms
can be mixed with everyday messages such as
class change. It can be customary practice for
schools to use the fire bells or sounders to
announce class changes with the potential for
confusion during an actual fire or routine test.
Facial recognition system
makes store “safest”
Panasonic’s facial recognition technology has
helped Jumbo Ten Brink Food to win an award for
the “safest store in the Netherlands”.
Jumbo Ten Brink Food introduced the face
server into their store environment in March 2017
after discovering that almost 80% of shoplifting
took place via large shopping bags. Since then,
Jumbo has installed 80 Panasonic cameras instore,
helping them to win the award.
Panasonic’s face server uses deep learning
technology which, says the company, maximises
the performance of the core engine to achieve
accurate and reliable recognition. The
technology identifies faces that are ordinarily
difficult to recognise, such as those taken from
an angle of up to 45 degrees to the left or right
or 30 degrees up or down. It also claims a 90%
accuracy rate when detecting faces that are
partially hidden by sunglasses or face masks.
If people are caught stealing, their image
remains on the database. The face server
provides a real-time processing capacity of up to
20 cameras per server and can execute searches
of up to 30,000 registered reference faces. With
this accuracy, security protection is enhanced
and the system allows matches even when
images are ten years old.
“The moment that a known shoplifter
attempts to re-enter the store, an internal alarm
is triggered, and we can take the best suitable
action,” explains Edwin ten Brink, founder of
Jumbo Ten Brink Food stores. “Thanks to the
Panasonic face matching server, Jumbo has been
proclaimed the safest store in the Netherlands.”
Karen Sangha, Panasonic’s Security Solutions
Regional Marketing Manager says, “We are
pleased to see that our customers are winning
awards as a result of implementing our
technology.”
1080p CCTV system protects
Hackney primary school
Delta Security has installed a 1080p CCTV system
to protect students, teachers and visitors at
Rushmore Primary School in Hackney.
The Board of Governors decided to replace the
ageing CCTV system with a solution that would
provide higher quality, recordable footage day and
night. As the school is based in a residential area
it was also important that invisible, non-intrusive
infra-red lighting was used rather than floodlights
that could disturb neighbours.
Based over two sites on opposite sides of a
private road, there was added complexity of
installing an integrated CCTV system that served
both sites. Delta Security used catenary cables
that run across the road to ensure the CCTV system
was fully functional throughout the entire site.
Vanessa Browne, School Business Manager,
Rushmore Primary School, says with a large,
disparate site it was important that the system
provided full coverage: “We wanted a system that
would give us total visibility and instant play-back
of footage across all entrances and exits, as well
as some internal areas.”
Keeping stars and spectators
safe at National Theatre
A Syncro AS control panel from Kentec integrated
with COSMO PSIM+ software is helping to protect
visitors, staff and actors at a national theatre in
Lisbon, Portugal.
The theatre regularly welcomes attendances of
up to 1,000 people to hundreds of different shows
and performances each year, including plays,
concerts and dances.
COSMO PSIM+ software was approached by
the theatre to create a centralised, user-friendly
management system to control and monitor more
than 300 fire detection devices across nine floors,
as well as having the ability to open fire escape
doors remotely. They selected Kentec’s technology
as an integral part of the project.
Syncro AS is a multi-protocol panel that is
scalable and networked to become part of much
larger systems if the need arises.
Fernando Santos, Director of Development and
Integration at COSMO PSIM+ software, says: “This
project posed some key challenges as the theatre
puts on a number of performances and shows that
use smoke and/or flames as part of their act.
Kentec’s Syncro AS control panel is able to
accommodate these challenges, while its large
graphical display and ergonomic button and
indicator layout make it simple and
straightforward to understand.”
All events, alarms and warnings are now
reported on a single panel, allowing a faster and
more accurate response to each case. To enable
remote opening of doors, an I/O controller was
used, allowing COSMO PSIM+ to send commands
to configured devices.
Project trials use of thermal
cameras for fire safety
Your Homes Newcastle (YHN), which manages
more than 26,000 properties on behalf of
Newcastle City Council, is undertaking a pilot
project utilising thermal imaging cameras for fire
safety in tower blocks. The organisation has
installed thermal imaging cameras in three of its
45 multi-storey blocks across the city in a trial
partnership with OpenView Security Solutions.
The pilot involves the installation of Mobotix
M16 thermal cameras in bin chute rooms to
detect minute increases in temperature,
triggering an alarm in YHN’s central enquiry
centre before any fire has had a chance to take
hold. This ensures that an alarm is raised with
the fire service within seconds of a possible fire.
The camera continually monitors the
temperature in the room, with information
relayed back to the fire service enabling them to
better prepare their response.
David Langhorne, YHN’s Assets and
Development Director, said: “The tragic events
at Grenfell Tower have undoubtedly put fire
safety in multi-storey blocks under a
microscope, but we have been trialling new
measures in our multi-storey properties for
some time.
“The early detection system provided by the
OpenView system has many benefits. Most
importantly, the faster response time from the
fire service means the potential impact on
residents and their properties is minimised and
they and their homes are far safer as a result.”
The project is already attracting praise from
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.
According to Alan Robson, Assistant Chief
Officer at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue
Service: “Using technology to support the
monitoring of storage areas such as this helps
improve the information we receive about
incidents. This technology can reduce false
alarm calls and improve our response to
confirmed fires.”
The Mobotix M16 Thermal camera’s lens is
triggered when an unexpected heat pattern
occurs and automatically sends an alert to the
central control room. Images from the thermal
lens are automatically presented to operators
enabling the exact location of hotspots, such as
smouldering fires, to be pinpointed. The
standard CCTV lens provides a live feed for
further verification of events.
TRIED & TESTED
Hers is an overview of some of the products we have featured in PSI
independent test reports. This month we highlight a range of systems
listed in no particular order. As always, manufacturers and distributors
have no input in the test reports or results
Master Lock – CHW30300EURHR0
This Digital Security Chest is designed to preserve digital hard drives,
electronic equipment, documents, photo albums, money, jewellery
and more and is listed as being able to endure temperatures up to
843°C for 30 minutes protecting the stored contents (reportedly
keeping items at 177°C) and it is ETL (Electrical Testing Laboratory) verified.
REVIEW: It is a good idea to have some form of security in your trade vehicle for the
safe storage of cash. This chest is certainly secure enough to do the job and is not of
the kind of weight or shape that anyone is going to be able to get away with easily. With
an SRP of just £90 this is a solid unit that could prove priceless. 9.0/10
Bolle – Cobra
Described as an all-rounder with a panoramic 180° field, Cobra glasses weigh around
25g and have an anti-scratch outer coating with anti-fog coating inside the lens.
Impact resistance is suitable for everyday wear and the frame features non-slip
nose and arms, so this would be the style aimed at installers.
REVIEW: If you thought all safety eyewear was the same
you are very much mistaken. We highly recommend the allround
visibility of the Cobra for security installers. 9.0/10
Optex – BXS-AM Detector
This is a wall or pole mountable IP55 outdoor “curtain” PIR intrusion detector that
has dual narrow passive infrared detection zones either side of the device. Intended
for example to cover side walls of buildings in order to trigger an alarm when people
approach too close to the property. These side zones have a range of up to 12 metres,
giving a coverage of up to 24 metres in total.
REVIEW: A very straightforward alarm device with clear operation and simple set-up. Apart from the
reservations regarding cable entry and security of access the unit performs well and should prove
easy to install. 8.5/10
Raytec – VAR2-IPPOE-HY8-1
This illuminator is a hybrid design providing both Infrared and White light
illumination from one network controlled device. The Infrared wavelength is
centred on 850nm and a 940nm version is available on request. Power is by
4-Pair PoE or optionally through a separate 24v DC supply.
REVIEW: The white light allowed extremely good colour reproduction and did not
excessively flare on near objects even at the 100% output level. Similarly, the
infrared had good even illumination over distance and allowed a good contrast
range for subjects. Extremely versatile. 9.0/10
SMOKE DETECTION
Codelocks – CL4510
The CL4510 is a door lock that combines smart technology with a traditional keypad
and card access options suitable for a range of applications. One of the main benefits
of the system is that the user can choose the most suitable entry method(s) for the
application, therefore not limiting the scope of where installers can specify the lock.
REVIEW: The fact that one unit can do so much, especially when paired with the
multi-function K3 Connect app makes this lock a dependable choice. Furthermore this
is a straightforward future-proofed unit that does not require complicated installation
work or either party having in-depth programming knowledge.
9.0/10
Union – DoorSense
DoorSense from Union, part of Assa Abloy Security Solutions is a legal way for fire doors to be kept open for
access and be able to close automatically in the event of an alarm. The battery-operated
system is CE marked to EN 1155 standards.
REVIEW: The DoorSense does exactly what it should do and even though it looks like it
weighs a ton it is actually extremely light for a motorised unit and therefore does not affect
the effort required in everyday use of the door. 9.0/10
Aiphone – JPS-4AEDV
The pack contains all the necessary items for a single door
video intercom. The IP54, IK08 rated door station provides a
170° image with a stated 5 lux minimum illumination at the
50cm optimum focus point. The internal Video Master Station
features a 7” touch screen and has facilities for monitoring additional security
devices.
REVIEW: Flexible product with a wide range of connection capabilities and
optional components available to fulfil the majority of video entry requirements
for the small commercial and small to large residential properties. 9.0/10
Jackloc – Mk2 Restrictor
The window restrictor featuring a five disc locking barrel is tested to BS
EN 13126-5:2011 and BS EN14351-1:2006, and while there are generic
products available that follow a similar style, this unit is the higher spec
end of the market.
REVIEW: The simplest solutions are often the most effective and the Jackloc Mk2 with
key lock certainly fulfils any requirements without complicated
installation. It’s well worth having a few of these in stock
should the need arise for window safety. 9.0/10
Seagate – SkyHawk ST14000VX0008
The 14TB SkyHawk is a conventionally packaged 3.5” hard drive with SATA connection. It is
promoted as a surveillance optimised drive with “superior image integrity”. Multi-Tier Caching
allows for up to 64 HD video streams to be handled.
REVIEW: A very fast and efficient hard drive with an impressive specification, vast
storage and manufacturer support for data recovery if required. The attention to
the specific current and developing requirements of the surveillance industry
should ensure that this drive provides the required performance and longevity of
service. 9.0/10
