Fire fighters from Central Township Joint Fire District participated in a coordinated effort to burn prairie grass
along the Prairie Grass Trail with the Madison Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Friends of Madison
County Parks and Trails, and volunteers trained in prescribed burns.
Filling prescription for fire
A fire purposely set will bolster the growth of native
wildflowers and grasses along the Prairie Grass Trail
bike path near London.
On April 17, staff from Central Townships Joint Fire
District and the Madison Soil and Water Conservation
District, along with several volunteers, conducted a prescribed
prairie burn along the trail at Neil Road.
A prescribed burn is the planned application of fire
in wild areas under specific weather and fuel parameters
to invigorate the growth of native plants and reduce
the risk of an actual wildfire.
A prescribed burn has many steps, and the Madison
County Park District was fortunate to find a certified
burn boss, Jeremy Keller, willing to volunteer his service.
A certified burn boss is trained in basic fire ecology,
prescribed fire planning, firing methods, smoke management,
burn management, contingency planning, fire
behavior predictions, and burn plan development.
In addition to overseeing the burn, Keller offered free
A prescribed fire uses back burning or back fire to
contain the fire in the area that needs to be burned. A
back fire is started downwind of the head fire at a safe
distance. It slowly burns into wind, creating a wide barrier
of barren land that the swiftly moving head fire
cannot cross. Keller’s training showed the fire fighters
how to set up a back fire and different ways to ignite it. The back
fire technique is applied in situations where a wildfire becomes too
hot to allow a brush truck to get close.
A common question about prescribed burns is what happens to
the wildlife, such as pheasants. A burn is a temporary setback.
Planned burns happen before or after the nesting season, so the
adult birds depart during the burn and no baby chicks are harmed.
Afterwards, the vegetation rapidly starts to grow and turn green.
The animals soon return to find more insects and plants on which
to feed and in which to hide.
The history of Madison County is deeply rooted in the tall grass
prairies that once covered this region of Ohio. At the time of settlement,
the wet clay soil was almost impossible to plow and the
prairies were used for grazing livestock.
After Ohio passed the “Ditch Law” in the 1850s, the county government
was able to construct group drainage projects. With the
newly drained land and the invention of the steel plow, settlers
were able to break through the tough prairie sod. Settlers farmed
over most of the prairies which, as a result, nearly dwindled out of
existence.
“It is important to recognize the significance of prairies in Madison
County because agriculture continues to play a large role in the
economy and culture of Madison County,” stated Julia Cumming,
program administrator for the Soil and Water Conservation District.
“Approximately 88 percent of land in Madison County is still
being used for agricultural purposes today.”
In 2015, agriculture and food production contributed over $113
million to the overall economy of Madison County.
The goal of the Madison County Park District is to maintain the
fragments of original prairie still found along the old railroad, now
converted into a multipurpose trail, out of respect for the past.
Prairie plants still naturally occur along the multipurpose trail
because the land was never plowed. It used to catch on fire from
time to time when the railroad was active.
“The Park District hopes to continue the partnership between
volunteers and fire fighters to use fire as a management tool to help
the prairies continue to grow,” Cumming said.
Landowners can grow prairies on a portion of their properties.
Prairie vegetation improves soil health, water quality and the
wildlife population. To learn more, call the Madison Soil and Water
Kelley’s desire to work in this field set off
that as a homicide investigator, he has seen
an unease with her mother.
“I don’t like it,” said Tuttle, who works at
To try to quell her nerves, she thought
“We have people at the BCI that are committed
to solving crimes and finding justice
the forensics program would be a great opportunity
to learn about the field in reality
for the victims and their families,” he said.
as compared to what is presented in television
dramas.
“It’s not like these shows where everything
can be solved in a matter of days. Sometimes
“I wanted to know more about this field
from people who actually experience it,” she
in Kelley’s potential career path.”
According to Slaper, who began her career
at BCI as a DNA scientist more than 13
So, on April 24, the Tuttle family drove
to the library where Roger Davis, a special
their backgrounds and BCI and addressed
Davis said cases from the earlier decades
common misconceptions related to their line
are complex and frustrating, and that
largely stems from how scenes were covered
then. He used an example of vague notes
“It’s not a line of work for everyone,”
that may have worked for the investigator at
Davis said.
that time, but not for those in the present.
Since becoming a patrol officer at a suburban
Still, Slaper said all parties work with
what they have, and she feels they do a
Putting books in kids’ hands
Dolly Parton’s Imagination
Library was launched in Sevier
County, Tenn., in 1995. Since
then, the program has expanded
across the United
States, Canada, Great Britain
and Australia.
The Imagination Library is
a partnership between the
Dolly Parton Foundation, United Way, local
educators, libraries and other sponsors and
funders. Children between the ages of newborn
and 5 years old can register to be a part
of the Imagination Library. A free, age-appropriate
book is mailed each month in the
child’s name to their home address.
United Way of Clark, Champaign and
Madison Counties recently announced that
the Imagination Library will be established
officially in Madison County with the Madison
County Power of the Purse fundraiser,
a fun event at which women come together
to raise money for the program.
Madison County’s Power of the Purse is
set for 5:30-9 p.m. May 9 at the Coughlin
Automotive Community Center on the
Madison County Fairgrounds, 205 Elm St.,
London. A silent auction, live auction, entertainment
and food are planned. Tickets are
$40 pre-sale and can be purchased by calling
(937) 324-5551 or at www.uwccmc.org.
Tickets at the door are $45.
It takes $25 per child to fund a year of
books. The program is completely
free to all children who
are registered, thanks to donors
and fundraisers. United Way of
Clark, Champaign and Madison
Counties now holds an annual
Power of the Purse event
in each of the three counties.
Bryan Howard, director of
London Public Library, stated, “The importance
of getting books into the hands of a
child cannot be emphasized enough. Early
exposure to reading helps children develop
creativity, an advanced vocabulary, interest
in different topics, and enhances a child’s
concentration. The Dolly Parton’s Imagination
Library is an amazing, free program
that gives all children and families the tools
to do this.”
Children develop much of their capacity
to learn in the first three years of life. Immersing
a child in a print-rich home can be
a stronger predictor of literacy and academic
achievement than family income.
However, in order to read with a child,
books must be in the home. An statistic reports
that in low-income neighborhoods,
there is only one age appropriate book for
every 300 households.
Sisters Allisynn (left) and Caitlynn Dunaway–and a couple of
their favorite dolls–enjoy the Dolly and Me Tea Party at the
Mount Sterling Community Center. This year’s party is set for
May 19. Tickets are on sale now.
Dolly & Me Tea
The Mount Sterling Community Center will host its annual
Dolly and Me Tea Party from 4 to 5:30 p.m. May 19. The event
is for girls and their favorite adults, as well as other ladies, and
includes a buffet of tea sandwiches, veggie pizzas, cookies and
other baked treats, and teas and lemonade.
Between bites, guests can browse the Dolly Shop for outfits
and accessories that fit 18-inch dolls, such as American Girl
dolls. The shop also will offer headbands and other fun items
that fit little girls. Popular items at past tea parties have included
doll outfits made by local volunteers and members of the
Community Center’s Sewing Ladies. Quick to sell are the gowns
sewn by Charlotte Crites, one of the event committee members,
and her bathing outfits for 18-inch dolls.
The silent auction features themed doll outfits, complete with
books, shoes and accessories to fit the theme. Popular themes
from past tea parties have included of “Frozen,” “The Wizard of
Oz” and Fancy Nancy. This year’s offerings include an American
Girl doll, doll furniture, themed baskets, and must-haves for
dolls and their little girls.
A highlight of the tea is the door prize table. Prizes include
toys, books, games and doll accessories. One lucky girl will go
home with Blair Wilson, this year’s American Girl Doll of the
Year. Entry in the door prize drawing is free with admission.
New this year is Grandma’s Attic, a place to play dress-up.
The options include hats, scarves, jackets, gloves, boas and fancy
shoes—perfect for posing and picture taking. Also new is piano
music by Mount Sterling resident Ralph Ross, who also will
serve as emcee, announcing door prize winners between songs.
The Dolly and Me Tea Party is a fundraiser for the Mount
Sterling Community Center. Volunteers and donors from the
community provide the auction items, door prizes and food. Proceeds
benefit activities at the center, such as the after-school
program and food pantry, as well as space for the Sewing Ladies,
community meetings, Alcoholic Anonymous meetings and more.
Past tea parties have sold out. Tickets are available prior to
the party by calling the Community Center at (740) 869-2453 or
stopping by the center, 164 E. Main St., Mount Sterling. Tickets
are $6 for children ages 3-12 and $12 for adults. Children
younger than 3 are admitted at no charge but must have a
ticket. No tickets will be sold at the door.
Southeastern expands
ag education program
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Southeastern Local Schools is expanding
agricultural and environmental programming
at the junior high and high school and
the staffing to go with it.
At their April meeting, the school board
approved the hiring of a second vocational
agriculture teacher. Ellyse Shafer, a recent
college graduate, joins Darrick Riggs, longtime
ag teacher and FFA advisor at Southeastern.
Shafer’s one-year contract takes
effect for the 2019-20 school year.
“She’s raring to go,” said Superintendent
David Shea, adding that Shafer interviewed
well. She was among a dozen or so applicants
for the job and one of five interviewed
for the position.
The district is retooling its agricultural
programs to be more comprehensive and career-focused.
In the past, the district has
provided courses in agribusiness and production
systems. Starting next school year,
new courses will cover:
• agronomic systems;
• ag and industrial power;
• electronic and electrical systems;
• hydraulics and pneumatics;
• principles of bio science;
• bioresearch;
• meat and science technology;
• environmental science for agriculture
and natural resources; and
• business management for agricultural
and environmental systems.
The district is looking to collaborate with
Clark State Community College to offer college
credit for a high school class that feeds
into Clark State’s precision ag associate degree
program.
New at the junior high for next year are
introductory ag classes available at the seventh-
and eighth-grade levels. Each are nine
weeks long and include an overview of agriculture
and its importance to Clark County.
“As efficiency in agriculture increases, it is
important that our students be instructed on
the concepts needed to apply the new technologies,”
Shea stated. “The era of scientific
agriculture is upon us. Biology, computer science
and engineering will all play roles moving
forward. The demand for technical
expertise on and off the farm will become
more prevalent in Clark County and beyond.
Our goal is to better prepare Southeastern
students for the ever changing world.”
In addition to agriculture classes, the district
offers engineering classes in grades 7-
12. Junior high offerings include
engineering design and modeling in seventh
grade and automation and robotics in
eighth grade. Possibilities at the high school
include engineering design, civil engineering
and architecture, digital electronics, and
principles of engineering.
150th anniversary
School board member Kim Owens passed
along information from a group of alumni
who are planning a celebration of 150 years
of public education in South Charleston.
The anniversary year, 2021, coincides with
the 50th reunion year of the Class of 1971.
Duane Robbins, a 1971 graduate, is spearheading
the planning. The group’s next
meeting is set for 1:30 p.m. June 15 at Chillicothe
Street Pizza, 54 S. Chillicothe St.,
South Charleston.
Two teams of volunteers mobilized last
weekend for clean-up and beautification efforts
around Mount Sterling.
Madison-Plains High School seniors took
to the town on April 26. Members of Mount
Sterling First Church of the Nazarene came
out in force on April 28.
Led by senior advisor Felecia Groom, a
group of 26 students from Madison-Plains
completed a variety of tasks, from raking
leaves, trimming bushes and weeding
flowerbeds at the Mount Sterling Community
Center to picking up trash around the
village. Afterwards, they ate lunch at Ben
& Joy’s Restaurant, courtesy of American
Legion Post 417.
This marked the second year First
Church of the Nazarene has organized a
clean-up weekend around town. A total of
150 parishioners took part.
“It’s meant to show neighbors and the
community we are in this together. We just
wanted to show them love in a tangible way
by cleaning up, serving and working,” said
Pastor Joe Proudfoot.
The group picked up 40 trailer loads of
yard debris and several bags of garbage
from the roadside. They landscaped and
mulched around the village welcome signs
and town gazebo and at Meadowview Village
Apartments. They delivered more than
600 cookies, as well as cards made by the
church’s youngsters, to first responders and
shut-ins. They also completed landscaping,
picked up debris, and removed large, unwanted
items, such as couches and appliances,
from several homes in the village.
