8 Tuesday May 14 2019 News Funding boost for mentors A NEW Brighton mentoring programme has received $5000 from an accounting firm. The donation went to Youth Alive Trust and was made by Social Currency, a new business, which donates 10 per cent of its sales to programmes for at-risk kids. Thanks to the donation, a New Brighton teenager with few male role models now has a mentor, New Brighton’s Paddy Caffell. The two get together each week to talk, go to the gym, skate and sometimes do community projects. Mr Caffell said he had some very tough experiences as a teenager himself and it was one of the reasons he was passionate about supporting young people. “I was being hit at home and I never had the courage to tell anyone. It’s difficult to see what’s happening in the head of a teenager, but I’m in a privileged role of walking alongside someone who I have built trust with,” Mr Caffell said. Competition to name takahē LEE MEESE has chosen Poa as the name for a takahē chick. The Avonside resident’s name suggestion was chosen as the best of the 1800 submitted as part of a competition run by Mitre 10 to name the bird. The six-month-old takahē is the first chick of the season to be named. Ms Meese did plenty of research before submitting Poa as her suggestion. It is short for poales, the biological order of plant, which includes grasses and tussocks. “The thing that stood out was the grass and tussocks. That’s roots for me, and where you come from is part of who you are. Poa was pulled from a plant name, it felt strong for me and fitting for a New Zealander – male or female,” said Ms Meese. “I’m really excited to be part of something important, even if it’s just choosing a chicks name. The Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust says dogs, drones and people continue to be a threat to the 118 bird species, which call the estuary home, including godwits. Tim Lindley The Coastal- Burwood Community Board will now investigate what it can do to better protect these birds after trust members expressed concerns at a meeting last week The estuary became part of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway network last year, a network, which protects migratory waterbirds across wetlands in about 20 countries. Trust member Tim Lindley said the birds, which used the estuary faced threats that people may have not been aware of. “Birds do see dogs as wolves . . . it’s quite important that they’re not disturbed by dogs.” Mr Lindley said the estuary’s proximity to the eastern suburbs in both the Coastal-Burwood and Linwood-Central-Heathcote wards made protecting them even more important. “The birds stop feeding for 10 minutes when they are interrupted by humans. “Because this international flyway is in an urban area, it’s only going to get worse. “It’s dinner time for the birds and we need to keep it that way.” Board members agreed the signage currently in place telling people to be respectful of birds when around the estuary needed to be improved. Board member Linda Stewart suggested signage should give more specific information on the types of behaviour and activities that disturbed birds and how this could be avoided. Local News Now • By Matt Slaughter Fire rages, homes at risk Yacht club to open next month THE PLEASANT Point Yacht Club new clubrooms should be open by the end of June. Donations have seen the South New Brighton club’s budget stretch far enough for it to fulfil its ideal vision for the project. When completed, the clubrooms will include two buildings with toilet and changing room facilities. These will be joined by a decking area where spectators will be able to watch races. Yacht club members Alastair Burgess and Dan MacDonald told the Coastal-Burwood Community Board excitement was building for the opening, with talks underway about the possibility of hosting big events such as the South Island Yachting Championships. Board members asked if the club would consider hiring out the space for events and Mr Burgess said the option was currently being considered. A celebration for everyone who has been involved in the project will be held at the clubrooms once they are finished.
