Make music, new friends with Lincoln-
Way Youth Strings Summer Camp
Join Lincoln-Way Youth
Strings. Once school orchestra
is over for the year,
what are you to do?
The Lincoln-Way Youth
Strings Summer Camp has
two weeks of musical fun
taking place at Lincoln-
Way East High School
from June 17-27. Every
year LWYS offers a summer
strings camp, culminating
in an outdoor summer
concert in Frankfort.
The camp serves all current
violin, viola, cello and
string bass students with
at least six months playing
experience through
those advanced middle
school students who wish
to audition for the Illinois
Music Educators Association
District Junior High
Festival.
The LWYS orchestra
program is continuing a
nearly two-decade tradition,
with four orchestras
and more than 100 young
string musicians from the
southwest suburbs coming
together to learn and create
music.
In the fall every year,
new beginning students
can join, with no prior
experience required. Students
receive large group
and small group instruction
and put on four fabulous
concerts each year.
Guest artists are brought
in to perform with the
students, private teachers
run clinics throughout the
year, and students continue
to learn technique and literature
that will prepare
them for any high school
symphony orchestra.
The top-level Chamber
Orchestra performs at multiple
community events
each year, including village
events, high school
events and weddings. Each
year students enjoy the
winter break and end of
the year parties, participate
in solo and ensemble contests
and audition for the
ILMEA District Festival.
Our fall registration
2019 Summer Reading Program: It’s Showtime at Your Library
Mokena Community
Public Library District
launches It’s Showtime
at Your Library summer
reading program on June
7. During the next two
months, the library will
host a range of free activities
for children, teens and
adults to encourage and
support a love of reading.
Participants can win prizes
for reaching their reading
goals.
“We’ve planned a wonderful
program for kids to
make the library a great
place to read, learn, and
discover what’s available
for their enjoyment,” said
Executive Director Cathy
Palmer.
Themed events include
an all ages magic show,
Movie under the Stars and
Dinosaur Sensory Story
Time. Fun gift baskets, gift
cards and movie tickets
are just a few of the prizes
that will be awarded to the
lucky winners of our Summer
Reading Program
There’s also a serious
side to summer reading.
Research has shown that
reading over the summer
prevents summer reading
loss.
“Studies also indicate
students who read recreationally
outperformed
those who don’t,” said Assistant
Director Luke Surdel.
“Students read more
when they can choose materials
based on their own
interests. Our libraries are
committed to supporting
lifelong learning and educational
enrichment for all
families.”
Registration continues
throughout the Summer
Read Program. To learn
reading adventure at the library,
