Orient Cafe to roll
out new menu for
10-year anniversary

For almost a decade,
Orient Cafe has been serving
up classic Chinese
dishes at 14108 S. Bell
Road in Homer Glen.
Approaching her restaurant’s
10-year anniversary
this November, owner Sue
Chang was ready to shake
things up with a new menu.
“We have a lot of traditional
dishes, and they
are great, people love
them,” Chang said, “but
I would still like to target
the younger generation to
what they like.”
Targeting that crowd
means slightly downsizing
the menu — but keeping
the classics while adding
some new dishes.
Orient Cafe’s classic
dishes consist of old family
recipes, which have
been passed down three
generations in the business.
“It’s been nice to continue
the traditions,” said
Chang, who grew up in the
industry and lives in the
southwest suburbs.
Family recipes include
the cafe’s homemade,
crispy egg rolls, which
are the restaurant’s most
popular and well-known
item, thanks to their original
flavor.
“I’ve had people come
in from Chicago and Indiana
just for the egg rolls,”
Chang said. “Even people
who have moved away
come back to the restaurant
just for it.”
The egg fu young is also
not to be missed at the restaurant.
It is an omelette
dish with meat and gravy
and dates back to the early
1950s in Chang’s family.
Another menu mainstay
is the create-your-own
stir fry option, which allows
customers to choose
egg or rice noodles and
their meat, sauces, and
vegetables before it’s all
tossed and harmonizes in
the wok.
“A lot of restaurants
don’t have what we have,”
Chang said of the personalized
stir fry creation.
“We sell that the most because
people like to pick
their own meat and vegetables.”
These successful dishes,
plus an array of others,
will be on the upcoming
menu, which will be released
as soon as possible
this year, so make sure you
are checking for the announcement.
New dishes to grace
the upcoming list will be
“quick and easy,” Chang
said.
With the menu still under
development, Chang
mentioned a couple of
items that will be included,
such as chicken and monologian
beef on rice or
popular boba tea, a bubble
tea with milk and sugar.
The latter is already available
at Orient Cafe in eight
different delicious flavors.
With the menu update
comes a physical refresh
at the restaurant space
just north of 143rd Street
on Bell Road. Customers
can expect in the coming
months new “happy” wall
colors and interior decor
for a breath of fresh air.
While things are changing
at Orient Cafe soon,
Chang said customers can
still expect the same great
service and flavorful dishes
the restaurant has been
known for throughout the
past 10 years.
“We keep up the same
flavor in all the dishes,”
Chang said, adding that
her and her husband, Alex,
make all the sauces homemade
for consistency.
“My favorite part about
running this business is
meeting all of the people
who come here. They are
very nice. Thank you for
following us for three generations.”
