Support for seaplane takes off
• By Louis Day
NOT EVERYONE in Diamond
Harbour is against a plan to
fly seaplanes into Lyttelton
Harbour.
Resident Jane Davison says the
seaplanes will provide a boost to
the economy.
“I think the harbour should
be welcoming
to commercial
business
opportunity
where it can. We
don’t want to
go backwards,
Jane
Davison
Richard
Suggate
we want to go
forwards,” she said.
“I would have
thought that there
is potential to
provide locals with
job opportunities,
and if people come
to the harbour
to do a seaplane
flight, who is to
say they won’t
stop in at a bakery
and buy a doughnut or a coffee
somewhere?”
In last week’s Bay Harbour
News, Diamond Harbour
Community Association
chairman Richard Suggate said
the group made a submission to
the Civil Aviation Authority in
opposition to Rangiora-based
company Peninsula Air Ltd’s
plan to construct a waterdrome
in the harbour.
The proposed 1km long
runway would be located
between Rapaki and Quail
Island and provide seaplanes
with an area to take off and land.
SCENIC: A company’s bid to emulate the Sydney seaplane
experience in Lyttelton has received a mixed response from
residents.
It would also take people on
scenic tours of the peninsula.
“We are concerned about the
effects on other users of the
harbour, such as waka ama,
kayaks, swimmers, yachts,
motorboats, the list goes on,” Mr
Suggate said.
Peninsula Air Ltd directors
Mark Christensen and Grant
Edmundson did not return Bay
Harbour News’ phone calls.
Mrs Davison said the
association’s view does not
represent the entire community.
She said the majority of people
she has spoken to in Diamond
Harbour are in favour of the
plan.
“The community association
has about 100 members and
about 20 people turned up to
their AGM. They do some good
work but I think it is wrong
to assume that number of
membership could represent a
community of over 1000 people,”
she said.
Mr Suggate said the
association does not claim to
represent the entire community.
“There are always a range of
opinions about any subject – I
was expressing the views of the
association, not the community,”
he said.
Public submissions close at
the end of the month and can
be emailed to aerodromes@caa.
