Winter Garden Resident Goes the Distance
by Leona Braun
29
You probably already know
Lelia Higgins. If you’ve ever been
to the Windermere Library,
you've probably met the quiet, resourceful
library manager. Maybe
she helped you research a topic
or recommended a newly released
book. Everyone she connects with
at her job agrees it is obvious
she loves helping people and exudes
a passion for reading. What
you probably don’t know is this
Jamaican native, who moved to
Orlando when she was 29, is also a
marathon runner.
Lelia didn’t start out with a desire to
run marathons. A mother of two adult
children, her running career began
in 2004. She was shopping with one
of her daughters for a dress to wear
to the girl’s high school graduation.
When Lelia realized she needed to
go up a size from what she normally
wore, her daughter challenged her
to buy the dress in the smaller size.
With graduation only a month away,
there wasn’t much time for Lelia to
lose the weight she needed to lose to
fit into it. You could say she took that
challenge and ran with it.
She started out walking 3 miles a
day and easily fit into the smaller-size
garment with time to spare; however,
according to Lelia, “that just was not
enough.”
She started running and saw her
weight drop 40 pounds — from 170
down to 130.
“That’s when I was bit by the running
bug,” Lelia said.
Voted Top Doctor
2018 in Orlando 2015-2018
She was hooked on
the fact that she was
becoming healthier
and enjoying doing it.
Soon, Lelia began
competing in local
5K, 10K and halfmarathon
races. She
currently runs 3 miles
per day in the early
morning or evening
to avoid Southwest
Orlando’s humidity.
On weekends, she
runs 8 to 20 miles,
depending on what
race she is training for
at the time.
Lelia admits the first
2 miles are the hardest.
That is why she
doesn’t like running
short races.
“It takes a while to
warm up and get into
the rhythm of the run,”
Lelia said.
She listens to reggae music when
she runs, because the cadence helps
to keep her moving. Occasionally,
her daughters will suggest a pop or
rock song for her playlist that has the
same 4/4 beat.
Last October, Lelia participated
in runDisney, which involved running
four races of different lengths
around the parks in one weekend.
A different member of her immediate
family ran each of the races with
her. RunDisney is the road race division
of Disney Sports Enterprises, a
unit of The Walt Disney Co.’s Disney
Parks, Experiences and Products. It
is designed to get runners to plan
a “runcation,” a vacation that coincides
with the race they signed
up to run. In addition to Orlandobased
races, Disneyland Paris also
hosts races.
Lelia doesn’t limit herself to just local
running. She has participated
in 44 marathons around the country
and world. Her goal is to run
a race in each state, and she currently
has checked 39 states off her
list. She is not worried her quest
might get too expensive. She points
Lelia Higgins of Winter Garden completes the Abbott
World Marathon Majors.
out that she and her husband of 38
years, who she met in high school,
turn each race into its own runcation,
one she gets to “enjoy only
after the race.”
Lelia’s greatest achievement to
date is running the Abbott World
Marathon Majors. This championship-style
competition for marathon
runners started in 2006 with the
Chicago marathon. The Majors include
six of the largest and mostrenowned
marathons in the world:
Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin,
London and Tokyo. Once Lelia completed
her sixth marathon in Tokyo,
which she says was the most challenging
due to temperatures in the
40s and rain, she received her Six
Star Medal.
Back at the library, Lelia motivates
some of her coworkers to run and
now has one colleague who runs
half-marathons with her.
When asked what motivates her
to keep running, Lelia said, “It makes
me feel energized and refreshed
and keeps my brain clear.”
What more could you ask for
from a hobby? ª

Gina Hatch Was Born to Dance!
by Karen Nimetz
Dr. Phillips resident Gina
Hatch does not remember a time
in her life when she wasn’t involved
with dance. She grew up as a “studio
brat” at her mother’s dance studio
in Provo, Utah.
“My mom taught classes six days
a week,” Gina said. “I was always
there, whether I was in dance class
or not. I loved being there and being
with my mom.”
Gina’s late mother, Colleen
Collins Smith, was an accomplished
dancer. From 1947-49,
she performed with the world-famous
Radio City Rockettes. She
also worked alongside legends
like Martha Graham and George
Balanchine and choreographed
for movie musicals. During the summers,
Colleen taught classes at
the American School of Dance in
Hollywood, where well-known movie
stars would often stop in for class.
There, she worked with Gene Kelly
and gave 4-year-old Liza Minnelli
her very first dance lesson.
Colleen was a devoted mother
who happily shared her love of
dancing with her four children. Gina
remembers Martha Graham visiting
and staying over in the family’s
basement. She also recalls dancing
with family friend Cyd Charisse
and flamenco dancer José Greco.
Colleen was also close with William
F. Christensen, founder of the San
Francisco Ballet and Ballet West.
Christensen is credited with bringing
The Nutcracker, a Russian ballet,
to the United States. Colleen performed
in one of the first American
Nutcrackers. At age 8, Gina also
performed in one of Christensen’s
Nutcrackers.
“William was 97 years old at that
time, and he was very strict but loving,”
she said. “I learned so much
from working with him.”
Dancing was a special bond between
the entire Smith family, including
Gina’s three older siblings,
Craig, Ty and Collette. Growing
up, Ty was Gina’s dancing partner.
Gina was only 16 years old when
her father, Gene, passed away
from cancer. The duo danced to
Papa Watch Me Fly on the night
their father died.
“It was one of the most difficult but
memorable performances of my life,”
she said. “It was our way of paying
tribute and saying goodbye.”
When Gina graduated high
school, she was awarded the
William F. Christensen scholarship
to The University of Utah. During
Gina Hatch of Dr. Phillips shares her passion
for dance.
college, Gina danced with Ballet
West as well as the University of
Utah Ballet. Shortly after graduation,
she moved to Illinois to dance with
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
In 1994, Gina was offered a job
dancing at Walt Disney World, an
up.
“After having lived in the
Windy City, the thought of
Orlando’s warm weather was
very appealing,” she said.
“Plus, I had recently married
my wonderful husband, Greg
Hatch, and this job afforded
me the stability I needed for us
to start a family.”
Through the years, Gina has
performed in numerous productions
at WDW. She most
recently helped create and
performed in the Rivers of Light
show at Animal Kingdom. Gina
also teaches dance workshops
through Disney’s Performing
Arts Program. In addition to
her work with WDW, Gina has
been in and choreographed
various productions at Universal
Studios and SeaWorld Orlando.
Gina has performed with several
local ballet companies, including
Orlando Ballet and Central Florida
Ballet, and she often guest-teaches at
various studios. Several years ago,
Gina fulfilled an impressive dance
dream of hers when she spent four
seasons as a Rockette in New York
City, as well as traveled for their
Christmas Across America shows.
“My mom always spoke so highly
of being a Rockette, and I loved that
we both got to share that experience,”
she said.
Even with such an impressive résumé,
Gina’s proudest accomplishment
is that of wife and mother to her four
children: Ellexis, 19; Ledger, 16;
London, 11; and Leyton, 8. Ellexis
is following in her mom’s footsteps
and is currently a student at the
world-renowned The Juilliard School
in New York City. Like her mother,
Ellexis grew up as a “studio brat” at
Movement Arts Studio, which Gina,
along with Troy Davis, has owned
and taught at for more than 15 years.
And like her mom, Gina loves
sharing her love of dance with others,
especially children. When
Palm Lake Elementary School
Principal James Weis asked Gina
to assist with a special Arts Day at
the school, she immediately agreed.
Mr. Weis called Gina “a special
talent and kind and giving soul.
When I brought up the idea of
bringing [the] arts to our students,
Gina was one of the first people on
my mind to help get things rolling.
I barely had the request out of my
mouth when she offered to help develop,
organize and provide artists
for the event. She was an integral
part of our Arts Day team, and I look
forward to working with her on future
iterations of this event. Gina’s focus
was not only on what performers
we could bring to the event, but how
these performances could benefit the
students, whether by teaching or inspiring
our students to explore their
[own] talents and gifts.”
Gina brought in a variety of artists,
including sculptors and musicians,
and she even performed a 25-minute
dance show for the children.
“The arts are so important,” Gina
said. “It’s a great way to find joy. Life
is hard at times. The arts offer a way
to release some of that stress, express
yourself and have fun. I am honored
to have the opportunity to share my
love of dance with others.” ª
From Dream to Dynasty
Happy 45th Birthday to Rosen Hotels & Resorts!
On June 24, Rosen Hotels &
Resorts Inc. will celebrate its 45th
business anniversary! When Harris
Rosen, the company’s president
and COO, was asked what this approaching
milestone means to him,
he graciously spent an hour of his
packed schedule relaying the story
of his life. The truth is his personal
tale and professional success story
are one and the same. An intensely
focused businessman, Rosen is also
a charming storyteller who enjoys
recalling a past that shaped him into
the entrepreneurial and compassionate
man he is today.
Born on the Lower East Side of
New York City at 18 Monroe St.,
Rosen is the grandson of Austria-
Hungary and Russian immigrants.
He and his younger brother were
very happy living in a city that offered
so many experiences and
possibilities. They “never wanted to
leave the neighborhood.”
One day, as a youth, Rosen was
walking down a New York street and
stopped to watch a crew shooting the
film Somebody Up There Likes Me.
The lead actor was Paul Newman,
and Rosen found himself standing
right next to the star. Then he heard
the director asking if he would like to
“be in the movies.” Rosen was given
the direction to walk across the street
during the scene, which he did, but
he is not sure if his film debut made it
onto the screen.
The chance encounter, however,
convinced him living in Manhattan
between “the East River, Little Italy
and China Town offered wonderful
opportunities.”
It wasn’t until he was attending
a local arts-and-music high
school that Rosen’s mother pointed
out, “If you ever want to make it in
the world, you need to leave the
neighborhood.”
He took his mother’s advice, studied
hard and was the first in his family
to graduate from college. With
a degree in hospitality from Cornell
University and after a three-year
stint in the Army, Rosen landed his
first job at the Waldorf Astoria New
York. This led to many other hotel positions.
In 1968, he joined the Disney
company in California, which ultimately
took him to Orlando, where
in 1971, he was part of the team that
opened several Walt Disney World
hotels.
From his time served in the military,
Rosen appreciated the value of
rules and regimentation. Although
he loved helping develop the original
Disney hotels, he found it easier
to live by his own rules and his
principles of faith, dedication, hard
work, respect for others and passion
for success. Rosen wanted to run his
own business and apply those guidelines.
He wanted to live his version of
the American dream.
Many know the story of the start
of Rosen’s rise to success. In 1974,
at age 34, he was driving down
International Drive and saw a small,
two-story, 256-room Quality Inn for
sale. He thought it was a smart investment.
Being single with responsibility
to no one but himself, Rosen
emptied his bank account of his
$20,000 life savings, negotiated
with Travelers Insurance Co., and
purchased the hotel. He felt good
about his acquisition until he learned
that with the purchase, he also assumed
a $2.5 million mortgage. The
PROMOTIONAL FEATURE
debt amounted to a yearly payment
of $250,000.
Realizing his investment would
never make money while paying
off the loan and being a resourceful
young man, Rosen knew he first had
to reduce staff size. He moved into
the hotel and personally became
the general manager, housekeeper,
landscaper and assistant chef. His
security staff was a large German
shepherd. Rosen became the hotel’s
resident manager, and he lived there
for the next 16 years. He saved a
lot of money and made his mortgage
payments on time.
The early ’70s witnessed the
“depth of the oil embargo” and
Orlando tourism was down 30%
to 40%. Rosen recognized that tour
buses seemed to have enough gas
to drive groups to his city from places
like New York, Philadelphia and
Boston. He hitchhiked to Jacksonville
and then to NYC to meet with large
motor coach owners. He told them,
“I want your business” and offered
each company a drastically reduced
nightly room rate that he guaranteed
would be honored for the next two
years. After his first deal was struck,
each company provided him free
bus transportation to the other cities.
Six months later, the buses began
to come to his hotel and, to this
day, continue to partner with Rosen
Hotels & Resorts.
Rosen’s success allows him to be a
very generous man. His philanthropic
volunteer foundation is legendary
for its financial support. The donations
almost always have something
to do with education, which he credits
to his mother’s early guidance.
His Tangelo Park and Parramore
programs provide support from preschool
to post-secondary education
in at-risk Orlando communities. The
Harris Rosen Foundation recently
awarded 20 scholarships to
students living in Tangelo Park who
graduated from Dr. Phillips High
School, including three full scholarships
to Rollins College.
Since 1993, Rosen has provided
his associates with low-cost, comprehensive
health care, known as
Rosencare. In 2012, he expanded
the program with the free-standing
Rosen Medical Center. He considers
his staff “family” and takes
care of them. He says the plan could
be a template for an American
health care system.
From his second-story office in the
original Quality Inn, Rosen is making
plans to add rooms to two of his
eight properties. Planned additions
to the 1334-room Rosen Centre
and 1501-room Rosen Shingle
Creek will increase the company’s
total hotel rooms to more than 7,700.
Even so, he has never forgotten
his humble beginnings on the Lower
East Side. Several of his hotel restaurants
and venues bear the names
of his ancestors. For example, the
lobby bar at Rosen Centre is called
“Sam and Bubbe’s” and is named
for his grandparents on his mother’s
side. It features a “nosh” menu, serving
the best matzo ball soup, blintzes
and chopped liver outside of
Manhattan.
Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ award-winning hotels include
Rosen Inn International, Rosen Inn, Rosen Inn
at Pointe Orlando, Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista,
Midpointe Hotel, Rosen Plaza, Rosen Centre and
Rosen Shingle Creek. For more information, visit
Growing older is not the tragedy some would have us believe. The average
person’s lifespan is 79 years, meaning that after age 40, there are many more
years to enjoy! Perhaps Italian film actress and singer Sophia Loren summed it
up best when she said, “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents,
the creativity you bring to your life, and the lives of people you love. When you
learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” The following segment
BUSINESS
SPOTLIGHT
A Path to Healing
Helping People Through Their Hardest Moments
Charis Counseling Center was founded
by Jim Keller and opened in 2000
with a mission to help people through some
of their hardest moments. Jim is a nationally
known speaker, and he enjoys educating
and helping with marriage, relationships,
parenting and remarriage. He also authored
a homebuilder study titled Making Your
Remarriage Last and wrote The Upside Down
Marriage. Jim chose the name “Charis” for
his business because in Greek, the word
means grace. The counselors’ goal is to facilitate
growth, healing and transformation
by being instruments of the redeeming grace
of God in the lives of those they encounter.
In the past 19 years, Charis Counseling
Center has grown to three locations in
Central Florida with the newest facility in
Dr. Phillips. The center offers the services
of trained, experienced therapists from the
Christian community. They provide quality,
professional care for individuals, couples,
families and the community through confidential
counseling, assessment, testing and
consultation.
With a total of 14 counselors, Charis
Counseling Center seeks to provide each
client with a therapist who fits exactly what
he/she needs, be it depression/anxiety, addiction,
sexual issues, divorce, relationships,
adolescent and family issues, or general life
direction. Not only does the center offer oneon-one
counseling, but it also offers many
groups where people can come alongside
others in their journey to health.
Those who are ready to dig into their struggles
and walk toward healing and freedom
are encouraged to call Charis Counseling
Center today. Discover how counseling can
help you reach your goals!
Charis Counseling Center’s newest location is in Suite
365 at 7575 Dr. Phillips Blvd. in Orlando. For more information
When it comes to vaccinations, officials
at the Florida Department of
Health in Orange County urge parents
to prepare their children for the next
school year now. From July 22 through
Aug. 4, the Florida Department of
Health in Orange County will host
free immunization events for OCPS
students and children at the West
Oaks Mall in Ocoee. Parents can
vaccinate their children and obtain the
DH 680 form at the event. Children
must be accompanied by an adult
family member or legal guardian to
receive immunizations. If not, a notarized
permission form, signed by the
parent or legal guardian, must be presented
before services are rendered.
Parents also can use their medical
homes or private doctors to have their
children vaccinated and avoid the
last-minute back-to-school rush and the
long lines. For more information, visit
America participated in fantasy sports
last year, and fantasy football is an integral
part of the cultural landscape,”
said Dan Nissanoff, The Crown
with a celebrity Pairings Party and
were paired with a celebrity for 18
holes of play. This was the event’s
