Making history:
homes for sale at historic Headley Court
Homebuyers in Epsom will have a rare opportunity to secure
a property in a historic and stately setting when seven
houses, previously used to accommodate military officers
at Headley Court, are to be sold on the open market.
The sale of the large, detached, three and four-bedroom homes
at Cunliffe Close marks a new chapter in the history of Headley
Court, Epsom. For over 70 years, the estate has been the Ministry
of Defence’s Medical Rehabilitation Centre, helping to rebuild the
shattered bodies – and lives – of those injured whilst serving in the
armed forces. The growing need for a new, larger, state-of-the-art
facility has prompted a move to Stanford Hall, Loughborough.
The Grade II listed mansion at Headley Court was built in 1899
for Walter Cunliffe, Governor of the Bank of England during the
First World War. Set in an elevated position, it affords stunning
views over landscaped parkland and beyond. During World War
II, it became the headquarters of the VII Corps and, later, of the
Canadian Corps. Bought by the Institute of Chartered Auctioneers
and Estate Agents, it was presented to the RAF through the Air
Ministry in 1946. Initially treating aircrew injured in the war, it
became a facility for personnel serving in all three services.
“Headley Court has been a part of the local community for so many
years and there’s been a great deal of interest in what the future
holds for the site,” comments Vari Bowling of selling agent, Patrick
Gardner. We will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 15th June so
that prospective purchasers can view, and submit offers, for the seven
houses in Cunliffe Close. It may be the end of an era for Headley
Court, but it’s also the start of a new chapter in the estate’s history.”
