Commenting on the programme,
J Haynes, CEO,
Haynes Publishing Group
PLC said: “This is a brilliant
opportunity to reflect on all
the hard work and dedication
that has gone into creating
and sustaining the momentum
for this course that
has helped multiple young
people gain the skills and
confidence needed to stand
on their own two feet.
Repurposing an old Rover
for off-road use is a complicated
and engrossing challenge.
We are confident that,
in carrying out this considerable
task, participants will
benefit from a host of development
opportunities and
emerge with a good deal of
knowledge and fresh outlook
on their future. Looking
ahead, we are continuing to
build on the momentum of
this programme and providing
opportunities for teenagers
in Islington and across
the UK.”
Richard Frankland, CEO,
Prospex said: “It is exciting
to be delivering our tenth
course and to be working on
such an iconic vehicle. This
course means over 50 young
people in Islington have benefitted
and gained accreditation
as well as soft skills that
have helped them become
work-ready or get back into
education with a renewed
perspective. This current
course has two young people
that want a career in mechanics
and this will be that real
stepping stone for them.”
Michelle Barrett MIMI,
Business Development Manager,
Institute of the Motor
Industry added: “We are delighted
to be supporting the
MechaniX programme and
Prospex to offer a real opportunity
to younger people
to kick-start an exciting lifelong
career in the automotive
sector. Repurposing a 2002
Land Rover Discovery for
off-roading will be a fun and
rewarding challenge.”
EXHAUST SENSOR
OVERVIEW Part One
THE DEMAND for exhaust related sense
and control components continues to
increase, which why the VXPRO aftermarket
programme range from ELTA Automotive
Ltd is proving so popular.
Vehicle manufacturers (VMs) now rely on a host of
electronic components to achieve cleaner combustion,
but as these components have to operate in some of the
most hostile environments of the vehicle, they are highly
prone to failure.
As a supplier with a complete engine management
system product portfolio, ELTA has witnessed a definite
shift in the product pareto as the need for exhaust
related components continues to accelerate.
The following overview, which is part one of a four
part series that covers exhaust gas recirculation
valves, lambda, exhaust gas temperature and pressure
sensors, as well as fuel vaporisers, provides technicians
with a useful guide to the exhaust related components
that generally fail most often and why they do so.
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valves
Fundamentally the EGR valve reduces
harmful nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions
from the exhaust gas. This helps the
VMs to meet increasingly stringent
environmental targets set by European
Regulations.
NOX is produced when
combustion temperatures exceed
1,370°C and nitrogen begins to
react with oxygen.
The EGR valve helps keep
temperatures below the NOX
threshold by recirculating a
small amount of exhaust gas
back through the combustion process.
This dilutes the incoming air/fuel mixture and cools
combustion temperatures resulting in reduced NOX
emissions.
The most common cause of EGR valve failure is
carbon deposits that cause clogging or sticking. The
valve may stick open or closed.
All VXPRO products are tested to ensure they
operate within the manufacturer’s original parameters,
therefore guaranteeing that there will be no change
to the vehicle’s original performance following the
installation of the part.
In addition, the range also features QR codes on the
packaging, enabling installers to access a quick link to
product specific fitting and technical advice, without
having to open the box.
