DOORSTEP COLD CALLERS
We have received reports of cold callers in the New Broughton area of Wrexham
asking people for their details to register for a social networking group. We
would like to remind residents to be very wary of providing any personal details
to cold callers, either on the doorstep or over the telephone. This is because
information could be passed, or sold onto, other organisations, or potentially used to steal your identity. If
you would like more information on dealing with unwanted doorstep callers enter details of this link onto
your browser www.tradingstandardswales.org.uk/help/Dealingwithunwanteddoorstepcallers.cfm for
advice from Wales Heads of Trading Standards.
No cold calling stickers are available to purchase in various sizes from £1 to £3.50. Contact us for more
information
Scam Telephone Calls A resident has received a telephone call claiming to be from SKY. The caller
claimed that she had been overcharged and was due a £202 refund. The caller said that to ‘action’ the
refund they had ‘all the information’ they needed except the date of birth. The resident refused to provide
her date of birth and asked that they write to her. They said they were ‘too busy’ to write to her. The
resident still refused. The residents SKY account is actually in her husbands name, but the caller spoke with
the wife relating to this, claiming to have her details. The resident has not been able to speak with SKY regarding
this however, the call appeared to come from an ‘01453’ number, which when dialled, appeared to
be someone's personal telephone number. This suggests that the number has been ‘spoofed’ confirming it
was a scam attempt. Please be wary when approached to complete ‘surveys’ or entering competitions on
Facebook or similar social network platforms where your details are requested to enter competitions etc.
This information can be sold or passed on to other companies and could be used for unscrupulous purposes.
A resident has received a number of recorded message calls stating that there was an issue with the
internet and to press ‘1’ for BT or 2 for other networks. The resident was aware that this was a scam and
didn't respond. The resident recorded two telephone numbers, neither of which are recognised. This is an
attempt to steal money from you. Enter details of this link for advice from BT https://www.bt.com/help/
