Scam telephone calls cont.. A resident received an automated telephone call. As the automated caller
spoke so quickly she did not pick up all of the message, but she did manage to pick up to press a number to
verify a transaction for £600. They did not press any of the numbers but put the phone down. She dialled
1571 and obtained an 01942 number. She rang the number and the female person who answered seemed
flustered and said they had received a number of similar calls and that she wanted nothing to do with it. She
said she was speaking with her supplier. The resident then rang her bank, the money had not been taken
and they informed her that, from September, all banks would be contacting people who make unusual
payments via special security, asking them to press a digit on their phone to verify the payment before it is
authorised. Be mindful of this in case scammers attempt to use this method to steal money from you
delivered but then they went on to say that the payments would be reduced and they would need her bank
details. She refused to provide the bank details. The resident made enquiries with Sky who advised her they
had not made the call. When the second caller rang she knew it was a scam
claiming that there was a problem with her payment for her TV licence and for her to click on a link for more
information. She stated that, because the e mail was received on her mobile phone it looked more convincing,
