Rangi Ruru journo gets big break
MEG ROBERTS says she “would
travel anywhere” to follow her
dream of becoming a reporter.
The 17-year-old year 13 Rangi
Ruru student will head off to the
United States next month. She is
the only New Zealand student to
be accepted into the prestigious
Summer Journalism Institute
programme at Boston University.
“It still doesn’t feel real, I don’t
think it’s sunk in yet,” she said.
Foreign affairs and
international relations are
Meg’s passions and television
journalism is the area in which
she is keen to work, but she’s
excited to learn about all media.
She also plans to learn Arabic
as the Middle East is a dynamic
place for news reporting.
“There are no limitations as
far as where I would be prepared
to go – North Korea, Yemen,
anywhere. I’ve always been a
person who loves to explore
the world and the depth and
meaning behind it. I think
journalism is informative yet
creative; a perfect combination
of subjective or objective,” she
said.
“I love to see things as they
happen. I really enjoy watching
Al Jazeera and the BBC because
of the international news they
give us. There are lots of things
we don’t hear about here and I
would love to report on stories
that are important and not
always seen,” she said.
Careers adviser Kristen Fox
said the Summer Journalism
Institute programme is run
by the New England Centre
for Investigative Reporting for
students from around the world,
aged 14-18, and this year is its
10th anniversary.
BOSTON
BOUND:
Meg
Roberts will
attend the
prestigious
Summer
Journalism
Institute
at Boston
University in
July for two
weeks, then
return home
to New
Zealand to
complete
her year 13
at Rangi
Ruru.
Each lesson is tied to a
practical journalism skill,
with all students gaining
real-life reporting experience
on assignments, both at the
university and across Boston.
“Every day they have five
sessions where they go over the
fundamental skills needed in
a university class format. They
SCHOOLS
write for broadcast and web, and
it’s very heavy on ethics, which is
pleasing,” Ms Fox said.
After the classes, the students
move into a new session, which
is like a newsroom, where they
are divided into news teams with
each headed by a journalist who
is their editor.
The students cover city
council meetings, sports
events and police reporting.
Then all their work goes into a
portfolio.
Ms Fox said having this
real-life experience and the
work they produce is a fantastic
springboard for students.
“For Meg or any student,
having a professional portfolio
is crucial for applications from
high school. It’s great having
a passion for journalism and
when you combine that with
experience, it can create a
significant advantage for
students.
“Universities are going to
look favourably at students
who do this additional work
– having practical, tangible
examples of work is invaluable,”
she said.
Meg will attend Boston
University in July for two
weeks, then return home to
Christchurch to complete her
year 13 studies.
Juno, who joined Code Club
Aotearoa in year 4, is keen to
explore her options when she
tours the offices next month.
“I love coding and programming
and am excited to learn
about new things on the trip,”
she said.
Juno’s father Scott Rainey said
he hopes Juno will learn that
there is a “world of opportunities
out there.”
“Women add significant value
to the tech industry,” he said.
Global Office director Chris
Tacon said he wants to see more
diversity in the industry, noting
that women are currently
greatly underrepresented.
A 2018 report from the
Ministry of Women found
only 23 per cent of Kiwis
employed in digital technology
were women.
