Catholic, Marist and Bedean principles and values form the basis of a holistic education at the College. We aim not to make the College great but to ensure every boy has the opportunity to be great, and we endeavour to develop young men of Catholic hearts and minds through the experiences the boys have in their time here at the College. St Bede’s is a College for all…a place where gospel values are practised to help form principled men; a learning environment where everyone achieves; a place that teachers want to come to because of the strength of the community; a place also, where boys can embrace spiritual, sporting, cultural and community activities, which all combined shape boys into men. That’s the priority and that is in our DNA. Boarding at St Bede’s College is a tradition that goes back to the 1920s. Our rich history and tradition provides an excellent foundation to embrace the challenges of the modern era and prepare our boys to be Catholic leaders wherever life takes them. Today’s boarders enjoy life away from home at the only single-sex Catholic boarding school in the South Island. Like many other organisations in Christchurch, our campus has been broken and tested. The demolition of the Chapel seriously challenged us. It was the single most important building at St Bede’s College, and had symbolised the heart and soul of the College ever since the third Rector, Father Gilbert, converted it from the gymnasium in 1929. Makeshift holy places in the last eight years, including the present facility, are a poor imitation and far from ideal. But we knew it was important to have this sacred space – a place where we gather in good times and in bad. The time has now come to build a new Chapel, which will be opened in September this year. After the hard years, there is real excitement and anticipation about the prospect of the rebuild which will significantly transform the campus. As well as the Chapel, we recently opened a new Food Technology and Visual Art block and have extended the Gymnasium. The Performing Arts Centre will also be opened later this year. All four were part of at least one of the Burnside High senior girls teams which won back-to-back national secondary school titles in 2015 and 2016. Pio and Mikaera have been playing for the Shirley club in recent times, while Manderson and Fahey are currently on volleyball scholarships at division one colleges in the United States. “Going to division one is a major step up – everyone’s bigger and everyone’s faster. I was lucky enough to get to play all of last year and it’s tough, but very cool,” said Manderson. The New Zealand team will be hoping to secure a top three finish at the Asian championship, which would book them a spot in the under-23 world championships. For Fahey, who has just transferred to North Carolina A&T State University, the decision to come home in preparation for the tournament was easy. “I kind of came back to play for him [Ryburn]. I was in the States, but I knew he was coaching so I wanted to try and make his team,” said Fahey. They will face No 3 seed Vietnam in their group, as well as Turkmenistan. “Their ball control of some of the teams in Asia is insane. They get so many, many more reps than we do, it’s really hard to kill a ball against them, their defence is insane,” said Manderson. None of the girls played volleyball before attending Burnside High School. The school has developed a successful programme WESTERN NEWS in recent years, turning out a number of players who have gone on to play for New Zealand and been offered US college scholarships. When asked what the key to the school’s success has been Manderson, Fahey, Pio and Mikaera all gave the same answer – coach Ryburn. “He chased me around trying to get me to join the team for years . . . I was playing rugby, but he was persistent with convincing me to play volleyball,” Fahey said. Young runners take on Halswell Quarry THE HALSWELL Quarry hosted 1353 children from schools throughout the region in the Primary Sports Canterbury cross-country last week. All competitors qualified for the event through their school and then through their zone. The year 5 boys race was won by St Albans School pupil Harry Woodhouse in 7min 41sec. In second was Ethan Cox (West Spreydon School) in 7min 46sec. Finn Bruwer (Tai Tapu School) rounded out the top three just 1sec behind Ethan. The year 5 girls race went to Fendalton Open Air School’s Tessa De Wit in 8min 4sec. In second was Sophie Lampe (Hinds School) with a time of 8min 10sec. Miriam Lemon (Sumner School) finished third in 8min 17sec. Amelia Henstock (Waimairi School) won the year 6 girls race in 7min 32sec. Second belonged to Francheska Sims (Marshland School) in 7min 39sec. Sasha McIntyre (St Andrew’s College Preparatory School) finished third in 7min 42sec. In the year 6 boys race, Harrison Staunton (Somerfield School) was first to cross the line in 7min 10sec. Behind him was Otto Church (St Albans School) in 7min 17sec and Silas Jones (Hillview Christian School) in 7min 27sec. Fenella Chittock (Opawa School) won the year 7 girls race in 11min 40sec. Second was Ava Rattray (Casebrook Intermediate) in 11min 50sec. She narrowly pipped Charlotte Chiles (Selwyn House School) on the line, who also finished in 11min 50sec. In the year 7 boys race, Edward Connolly (St Andrew’s College Preparatory School) won in 11min 11sec. Second went to Finn Pearson (Loburn School) in 11min 15sec, with Cooper Wightman (Lincoln Primary School) third in 11min 17sec. The year 8 girls title went to Elspeth McGuinness (Governors Bay School). She won in 11min 24sec, ahead of Lucy Vance (Cathedral Grammer School) in second with a time of 11min 35sec. Third went to Kate Currie (Heaton Intermediate). Angus Sevier (Christchurch South Intermediate) won the year 8 boys race in a dominant time of 10min 32sec. Second went to Elliot Graves (Hillview Christian School) in 11min.
