Boarding<br />
at St Bedes College<br />
St Bede’s is a Catholic College for boys<br />
founded by the Society of Mary in 1911 and<br />
it is also the only Catholic boarding school<br />
for boys in the South Island.<br />
Catholic, Marist and Bedean principles<br />
and values form the basis of a holistic<br />
education at the College. We aim not to<br />
make the College great but to ensure every<br />
boy has the opportunity to be great, and<br />
we endeavour to develop young men of<br />
Catholic hearts and minds through the<br />
experiences the boys have in their time here<br />
at the College.<br />
St Bede’s is a College for all…a place where<br />
gospel values are practised to help form<br />
principled men; a learning environment<br />
where everyone achieves; a place that<br />
teachers want to come to because of the<br />
strength of the community; a place also,<br />
where boys can embrace spiritual, sporting,<br />
cultural and community activities, which all<br />
combined shape boys into men. That’s the<br />
priority and that is in our DNA.<br />
Boarding at St Bede’s College is a tradition<br />
that goes back to the 1920s. Our rich<br />
history and tradition provides an excellent<br />
foundation to embrace the challenges of<br />
the modern era and prepare our boys to be<br />
Catholic leaders wherever life takes them.<br />
Today’s boarders enjoy life away from<br />
home at the only single-sex Catholic<br />
boarding school in the South Island.<br />
Like many other organisations in<br />
Christchurch, our campus has been broken<br />
and tested. The demolition of the Chapel<br />
seriously challenged us. It was the single<br />
most important building at St Bede’s<br />
College, and had symbolised the heart and<br />
soul of the College ever since the third<br />
Rector, Father Gilbert, converted it from the<br />
gymnasium in 1929.<br />
Makeshift holy places in the last eight<br />
years, including the present facility, are a<br />
poor imitation and far from ideal. But we<br />
knew it was important to have this sacred<br />
space – a place where we gather in good<br />
times and in bad.<br />
The time has now come to build a new<br />
Chapel, which will be opened in September<br />
this year.<br />
After the hard years, there is real excitement<br />
and anticipation about the prospect of the<br />
rebuild which will significantly transform<br />
the campus. As well as the Chapel, we<br />
recently opened a new Food Technology<br />
and Visual Art block and have extended the<br />
Gymnasium. The Performing Arts Centre<br />
will also be opened later this year.<br />
Reunion for volleyballers and coach<br />

coach Sam Ryburn – who<br />
is also the under-23 coach.<br />
All four were part of at<br />
least one of the Burnside<br />
High senior girls teams<br />
which won back-to-back<br />
national secondary school<br />
titles in 2015 and 2016.<br />
Pio and Mikaera have<br />
been playing for the Shirley<br />
club in recent times, while<br />
Manderson and Fahey are<br />
currently on volleyball<br />
scholarships at division<br />
one colleges in the United<br />
States.<br />
“Going to division<br />
one is a major step up<br />
– everyone’s bigger and<br />
everyone’s faster. I was<br />
lucky enough to get to<br />
play all of last year and it’s<br />
tough, but very cool,” said<br />
Manderson.<br />
The New Zealand team<br />
will be hoping to secure<br />
a top three finish at the<br />
Asian championship,<br />
which would book them a<br />
spot in the under-23 world<br />
championships. For Fahey,<br />
who has just transferred to<br />
North Carolina A&T State<br />
University, the decision to<br />
come home in preparation<br />
for the tournament was<br />
easy.<br />
“I kind of came back<br />
to play for him [Ryburn].<br />
I was in the States, but I<br />
knew he was coaching so I<br />
wanted to try and make his<br />
team,” said Fahey.<br />
They will face No 3 seed<br />
Vietnam in their group, as<br />
well as Turkmenistan.<br />
“Their ball control of<br />
some of the teams in Asia<br />
is insane. They get so many,<br />
many more reps than we<br />
do, it’s really hard to kill<br />
a ball against them, their<br />
defence is insane,” said<br />
Manderson.<br />

played volleyball before<br />
attending Burnside High<br />
School.<br />
The school has developed<br />
a successful programme<br />

in recent years, turning<br />
out a number of players<br />
who have gone on to play<br />
for New Zealand and<br />
been offered US college<br />
scholarships.<br />
When asked what the key<br />
to the school’s success has<br />
been Manderson, Fahey,<br />
Pio and Mikaera all gave<br />
the same answer – coach<br />
Ryburn.<br />
“He chased me around<br />
trying to get me to join the<br />
team for years . . . I was<br />
playing rugby, but he was<br />
persistent with convincing<br />
me to play volleyball,”<br />
Fahey said.<br />
The team will start<br />
their Asian championship<br />
campaign against hosts<br />
Vietnam on July 13.<br />
