4 Tuesday June 25 2019 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Asset sales under scrutiny INDEPENDENT Citizens wants to start a conversation around asset sales, not lobby for it. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton wanted to clarify the group’s position following an article in Western News. It indirectly quoted city councillor Vicki Buck as saying the group was lobbying for asset sales. However, Cr Buck’s direct quote was: “They’re looking at asset sales.” Mrs Broughton said the city holds different kinds of assets and it wanted to investigate the financial viability of some of those. “There are the strategic assets, like the airport, Lyttelton Port Company, Orion and Enable,” said Mrs Broughton, who has announced she is standing for the community board again. “We wouldn’t be touching those, those ones are definitely off the table.” She said assets like the airport bring in a return for the city and benefited ratepayers. However, other groups of assets Independent Citizens wanted to look at to see if it made more financial sense to sell them, she said. “The two poorly performing assets in the Strategic Asset list are City Care and Eco Central.” Mrs Broughton also said land and building holdings should be investigated. Creativity using hands and loom SARAH KERR is a creative at heart. The 25-year-old has cerebral palsy, which affects body movement and co-ordination – but her condition doesn‘t hold her back at Handmade Studio Charitable Trust. Handmade Studio is a craft co-operative shop where people with disabilities can weave, loom, stuff and sew to create a variety of items – and 90 per cent of the money from each sale goes back to the person who made it. Sarah has been working at Handmade Studio since 2015, and says she loves it because it doesn’t matter that she has a disability. “It doesn’t matter that my legs don’t work, because it’s all hand stuff,” she said. “It’s varied and interesting, and you look at something and go: ‘Wow, I made that’.” Sarah works four-and-a-half days a week and spends a lot of her time turning wool into fabric using a loom. “It’s mostly hand stuff, and any leg movements are big movements, so I can do that. I can’t do sewing on the machines, and if I do hand-sew it has to be rough stuff. Supervisor Toni Parker- Adams said there is often up to 12 people working in the studio each day, and the friendships that have formed are just as important as the work itself. “They feel safe here, and they have a good group of friends. Some of them have been coming WESTERN NEWS for 20-odd years. It’s sort of like a coffee group on a bigger scale,” she said. The Sneaky Caribbean Monk Seal’s lead guitarist Jonathan Manning was ecstatic with his band’s win, which he attributed to their unique stage presence and genre fusion. Combining blues guitar and classic old school rock influences, the band placed an emphasis on creating a full on-stage experience for the audience. “We love very theatrical performances and it’s natural for all of our personalities to be more eccentric on stage,” said Jonathan. “You can go up there and play music and stand still, but we want to be more than that. It’s about being in the moment, revival, energy, and loving rock ’n’ roll,” he said. The other members of The Sneaky Caribbean Monk Seals are Yannik Turner (vocals), David Archer (bass) and Abel Carson (drums). Second place in the band category went to Indigo State from Burnside High School and Hagley Community College, with members Keira Jonkers (vocals) Israel Soper (bass) Kayne Child (lead guitar) and Lucas Royds (drums). They join Canterbury solo-duo winners There is a Tuesday Between a Monday and a Wednesday from St Margaret’s College and Christchurch Girls’ High School (first place) and Amber Williams from Cashmere High School (second place). The Canterbury winners now have the opportunity to submit a video of their original material for selection as one of the top-10 national finalists to play at the Bruce Mason Centre in Auckland on September 14. The Smokefree Tangata Beats Award went to Lovely and the Late Notes from St Andrew’s College. They now go into the selection process for the national final of Smokefree Tangata Beats, at the Vodafone Events Centre on September 21.
