What you should expect from a good financial advisor?
REGULATION: Before your
appointment it is essential you
check the regulation of the firm
you are speaking to. Chorus make
this as easy as possible – our
license numbers are listed on all
our articles, advertising, business
cards, email footers, and,via our
website’s ‘Regulation’ tab, you
can directly visit our listings on
the websites of the UK FCA, the
Gibraltar FSC and the Spanish
DGS and CNMV,and see details
of all our various licenses and
permissions. There should never
be any confusion or doubt as to
how the firm you are speaking to
are regulated, and there is never an
excuse not to display this clearly
on all literature. If you can’t find
license numbers and verify them
yourself, simply walk away.
FEES: Your advisor should
always tell you very clearly how
they are remunerated and give you
an exact breakdown of all fees.
Ensure you have the following fees
confirmed before signing anything:
1) The investment vehicle
or ‘wrapper’, for example a
platform or bond, will normally be
structured in one of two ways: No
tie-in, but a set-up fee payable to
your advisor, or an annual fee that
is tied-in for a set number of years.
You shouldn’t normally see both a
tie-in and a set-up fee, as this may
mean your advisor is trying to pay
themselves twice! If you are being
tied-in, always get a like-for-like
quote elsewhere before signing any
paperwork. At Chorus, to make
this as easy as possible, we can
even do this by email, and promise
to provide it within 24 hours.
2) An annual advisor fee –
this covers servicing and portfolio
management. At Chorus you
would not usually pay more than
0.75% for this, and the larger the
investment, the lower the fee.
3) The fees charged by each
individual fundin your portfolio
– be very weary of this fee. Fair
BRITISH MAN SWEPT AWAY BY
STRONG CURRENT IN FRONT OF NEICE
A BRITISH man
died last Saturday
after being swept
away by currents as
he swam with his
niece off a beach in
southern Spain.
The 53-yearold
said to be
an experienced
swimmer, got into
difficulties at El
Palmar, between
Tarifa and Cadiz in
Andalucia.
Spain on caution abroad list
MANY holidaymakers
will be surprised to find
that Spain features on the
latest UK Foreign Office’s
list of possible trouble spots
for travellers. The advice,
updated earlier this month,
warns of possible trouble
in Barcelona due to the
ongoing protests by Catalan
separatists. While these have
been largely peaceful in the
past there has been the odd
outbreak of violence and the
demonstrations seem likely
to continue in what is still a
by Alex Trelinski
A surfer managed
to help his niece to
safety before going
back for the man and
bringing him ashore
on his surfboard.
A doctor who
happened to be
on the beach tried
to revive him by
performing CPR,
but he was unable to
save him.
by Simon Russell
hot issue for many Catalans.
A more general warning
has been issued about mixing
hotel balconies and drugs or
alcohol, something that has
sadly claimed the lives of two
British tourists within the last
month alone. The third note
of caution involved terrorist
groups, with many of these
still being active in Spain.
Warnings were also given for
France, Greece and Thailand
as the Foreign Office
annual fees for the highest quality,
FCA regulated funds are between
0.2% and 1.2% per annum, any
more than this should cause
concern.
The reality is, as IFAs we need
to win your business – that means
by giving you the best proposal,
out of say 2-3 firms you go to. You
should NEVER pay for an initial
consultation, and NEVER agree
to pay any fees before you have
received a full written proposal
detailing the exact products being
recommended, their benefits,
any tie-in, and full list of all as
previously mentioned charges.
Imagine if you went to a
shopping mall here in Spain, and
they charged you before you could
even enter the shop and see the
products and prices on offer!!
So, before you sign anything or
agree to pay any fees, ask for the
total annual % of your proposal
Playa de El Palmar en Cádiz.
expanded its definition of
places that should be treated
with caution by travellers.
Previously this was largely
to be confirmed in writing (by
email is fine – but again, are those
regulatory details in their email
footer??). Ensure the 3 charges
detailed in this article are included,
along with confirmation of the total
annual fee of the proposal, ie all
charges added together. There is no
excuse for not willingly providing
this information in a clear and
easy to understand way, and in
my experience, when this doesn’t
happen, it may mean they are
trying to hide fees from you.
Ask for fact sheets for the
underlying investment funds –
these should clearly display annual
charges, and preferably a 10+ year
track record.
I do often feel that as Brits we
are too afraid to offend, and this can
really cost us. Your entire financial
future is potentially at stake when
you sign up with an IFA. You might
be sat in an incredibly impressive
office, with a company that
restricted to more obvious
trouble spots such as the
middle east and parts of
South America.
HOTELS
BLAMED
FOR BEACH
DISCHARGE
The dry ditch (left)
and the water channel
earlier this week on the right.
TWO new Calpe hotels
that have already proved
controversial even while
under construction, are
now being linked to waste
water that is running a
channel through one of
the resorts most popular
stretches of beach, the
Arenal Bol.
The ecological
association ACEC has
denounced the situation
while social networks have
by Simon Russell
had posts from concerned
locals and tourists alike
asking if the water is safe.
The channel is actually
the convergence of two
different water sources
and, while it seems
to originate from the
construction sites, it is not
entirely clear that they are
to blame.
One of these sites is
for the Suitopia Hotel, a
building that many think
is breaking planning laws
due to it being too tall.
Some say that the site has
been discharging water
for a year and this is the
cause of the channel. Not
holding back with their
criticism, in a statement the
ACEC said: “the constant
greedy construction on
the beachfront, often of
dubious legality, shows
that contempt for the law
has become normal in
Calp”. Whatever the origin
or makeup of the water,
it is generally agreed that
the best advice for the
moment is for you and
your children to avoid
paddling in the channels.
Thankfully Calpe still has
one of the longest stretches
of beach on the Costa
Blanca so there is plenty
of space for everyone.
ALTEA VILLA
ROBBED WHILE
POLICE IN GARDEN
FRIday 14th June 2019
5
FROM FRONT PAGE...
From Front Page...
An audacious thief walked
away with possessions worth
more than two thousand
euros from an Altea villa,
while the owner talked to
Police officers less than
twenty metres away.
The burglary, at the home
of Darryle and Monica
Langford, in Altea La Vieja,
a rural suburb of the town,
occurred in the early hours
of last Monday, following
a birthday celebration on
The couple moved to Altea
from Cornwall in the year 2000.
by Andy Mansell
the terrace of the couple’s
detached villa.
After waving goodbye
to their guests, at around
01.15h, following the party
to celebrate Monica’s 54th
birthday, Darryle, 56, spotted
flames at the front of the
property.
As he ran outside with a
hosepipe to douse the fire,
which had broken out in an
eight-metre pine tree, he was
met by local police officers,
who had been alerted by a
concerned neighbour.
Security footage from
the villa’s CCTV cameras,
clearly show the burglary
taking place, like Monica,
already on the phone to the
fire brigade, ran down the
terrace to assist her husband,
who was calling for her
to turn on the tap for the
hosepipe.
In a thirty second sequence
of footage, the burglar can be
seen dashing into the house,
where the couple’s 17-yearold
daughter was
in her bedroom
sleeping, before
rifling through
their belongings
and running out
of the property
unnoticed.
More than
£2,000 worth of
goods were stolen
from the property,
in less then half a
minute, including
Darryle’s
mobile, smart car keys,
documentation, and
Monica’s handbag which
contained €800 ready to pay
her mother’s carer the next
morning.
“We didn’t realise we had
been burgled until 10 am
the next day when my wife
went to get her bag, then I
realised my phone was gone
and checked the cameras”,
explained Darryle, speaking
to the UK press.
The couple believes the
thief had been watching
the party on the terrace all
night before choosing the
opportune moment to start
the fire and make his move.
“The guests had just left
when I decided to go for a
swim, I heard a crackling
from the sound of pine
needles on fire and ran out to
see that a massive tree was
on fire”, he said.
“The flames were about
five or six yards high, we
managed to get them under
6ft by the time the fire
brigade arrived and because
it’s so dry if we hadn’t had
got the fire out the whole
house would have gone up.”
Petty theft in the vicinity
of the villa is rife and police
believe the thief may have
also been responsible for
another attempted burglary
in a nearby property, an hour
earlier.
Meanwhile, Darryle, who
owns the Tumovil mobile
phone shop in Albir, took to
his Facebook page to warn
homeowners to be vigilant.
‘This twat entered my
house last night in Altea 60
seconds after my wife went
down the steps, believe it or
not talking to the local police
in the driveway. He managed
to get away with over 2000€
worth of goods in less than
30 seconds. I do not know
what Altea is coming too this
is happening every day of the
week’, said the post.
However, Darryle, who
moved to Monica’s home
town Altea, from Saltash,
Cornwall in 2000, also added,
“This is the third breakin
we’ve had, plus another
attempted, but the area is
absolutely stunning and we
have no regrets living here,
it’s a wonderful lifestyle.”
Pregnant mum in stabbing
POLICE are looking into the
private life of a woman who
was killed by having her throat
cut at her home in the inland
Valencian town of Xativa. Her
partner made the horrific discovery
on Tuesday of the body
of Isabell Raducanu, 36, who
was six months pregnant and
the mother of another child.
The unborn child did not survive
the tragedy.
The dead woman’s boyfriend
te and police say at the moment
they have no reason to doubt
his version of events; the couple
had no history of domestic
abuse or arguments according
to friends and neighbours. He
was to be the father of the new
child and had posted images
on social media of the babies
ultrasound. Apparently, Isabell
worked as a prostitute and this
is the main line of enquiry the
authorities are working on.
They have also confirmed that
there was no forced entry to
the property indicating that the
victim willingly let her killer
into the property. An autopsy is
due to be carried out this week.
Wednesday was declared as a
day of mourning in Xativa and
a rally was held in the victim’s
memory.
The incident follows on from
the murder of a young woman
in the Valencia town of Alboraya
just a day earlier. 29 year
old Beatriz AH was suffocated
in her bed. When confronted
by the police her partner, a
48 year old Romanian national,
killed himself by jumping
from a fifth floor balcony. The
case is under investigation but
police are almost certain that
the dead man was also the killer
of his partner. However they
will still need to conduct an
autopsy and full forensic examination.
Syringe shock for
THE parent’s of a seven
foot on Playa Malvarrosa
lodging in the skin. He
had been playing with his
have complained about the
the syringe had been there
Scooter
continues
GANDIA is the latest
Valencian town to bring
in legislation concerning
the use of electric scooters
in the municipality. The
new guidelines come into
effect from 24 June and
prohibit them carrying
more than one person and
of using pavements unless
these are over three metres
wide. Riders will have a
maximum speed limit of 6
kmph in pedestrian areas.
The Local Police say
that the new legislation
is not being implemented
with immediate effect to
allow scooter users to get
used to the changes and
by Simon Russell
anyone infringing the law
will initially be spoken
The law about two people
on the vehicle has been
brought in as many parents
were using them to pick
children up and drop them
off at school. Any scooter
of more than a thousand
watts in power will be
considered a “proper”
road vehicle and must be
registered, helmets worn,
taken out while following
the same road rules as
motorbikes and mopeds.
THE Department of
Health in l’Alfas del Pi
has launched an awareness
campaign aimed at dog
owners to ensure that their
pets are registered. This
requirement is obligatory,
something not all owners
are aware of, said Health
Councillor, Marisa Cortes.
Many think the law only
applies to more potentially
dangerous breeds but all
dogs must be registered
during the municipal census,
said Ms Cortes. The process
is both to protect the dog and
the public health of residents
under the slogan (in
Valenciano) “Your needs....
your obligation. Your dog...
your responsibility”.
is for owners to wash
reminders include
keeping dogs on
once the new plenary is
confirmed, will hold their
first legislative session.
As tradition dictates the
only item on the agenda
will be the election of the
but an important one. Mr
short speech to his new
Special information booths
issue of cleaning up after
Altea swan causes
Facebook concern
One of Altea’smost popular
residents has been the subject of
much social media consternation
by his legions of local fans over
the past week.
The famous swan of Altea has
spent the majority of the past
few years, moving between two
sections of the town’s beachfront,
where freshwater runs into the
sea
Ḣe can currently be seen
beside the Tsunami chiringuito,
whose owner and staff, keep a
watchful eye on him and check
on his welfare.
He often cuts a lonely and
forlorn figure on the thin strip of
shingle beach,
he shares
with flocks
of ducks,
moorhens and
seagulls.
No one is
exactly sure
of the age
of the bird,
who has been
The exact age of the Altea swan is unknown
THE Department of
Health in l’Alfas del Pi starts
its annual rabies vaccination
campaign on 15 June, in
collaboration with the town’s
five veterinary clinics. Dogs,
cats and ferrets are all pets
that are vulnerable to the
alone since the death of his mate
several years ago.
Two years ago, concerned
local residents were anxious as
he appeared to have a damaged
wing and he was moved further
along the beach to Cap Negret,
where the Rio Algar meets the
sea
Ḣowever, he has since returned
to the Tsunami beach, where he
seems happiest and is regularly
checked by vets from the Seprona
division of the Guardia Civil.
Earlier this week a video
appeared on a local Facebook
page, showing the swan, known
by Simon Russell
incurable disease that can
also be passed on to humans,
usually through bites. All
clinics are offering the jab for
€18 until the campaign ends
on the last day of June with
by locals as Paco, apparently
unable to stand and refusing food.
Worried Facebook users made
pleas for help, whilst others who
see him regularly explained that
this was a regular occurrence and
assured them that he was very old
and checked on a daily basis.
Eventually after a few hours of
soul searching, a photo appeared
from the original poster, with
an apology, showing the swan
of Altea, looking a lot happier,
blissfully unaware of the social
media commotion his demeanour
had caused.
Guarding against rabies
the procedure also including
de-worming. For dogs to
be eligible they must be
microchipped and registered,
which is a legal requirement.
The vaccination gives
lifetime protection against
the deadly disease.

Benidorm
number two
in Spain
A recently published survey
from a major travel website
by Andy Mansell
suggests that Benidorm is
still as popular as ever with
holidaymakers from within
Spain.
TripAdvisor, questioned
1500 Spanish users of their
website to compile the survey
entitled Summer Holidays in
2019.
The news is a welcome boost
to worried tourism bosses in
the resort, concerned following
a disappointing start to the
crucial Summer season.
Ninety five per cent of the
people surveyed said they were
planning to take a Summer
vacation this year, compared to
91.5% who took them last year.
Tenerife came in at top spot
for the 39% of travellers who
intend to take their holidays in
Spain, with Benidorm in a close
second, followed by Mallorca.
Those who are planning
a trip to the Costa Blanca’s
most popular destination
praised Benidorm for, “its great
beaches, its long boardwalks
and its vertical architecture”.
In addition, to its “immense”
coast and its varied gastronomic
offerings, the potential visitors
were impressed by the varied
inland attractions near to
Benidorm and the opportunity
to discover hidden places,
such as the Fonts de l’Algar
andGuadalest.
The majority of travellers
will book for two weeks
(35.5%) and will have a budget
of between 1,000 and 3,000
euros per person, including
transportation, accommodation,
leisure and restaurants, with the
latter taking 20-40% of that
budget.
August is the month in
which most of the respondents
have planned to travel, with
36%, followed by July (25%),
and September (22%), while
June is the month in which
fewer Spaniards will enjoy their
summer vacations (17.5%).
THE Castellet del
A 35 year old Spanish
THE COST OF CHAOS
The British economy shrank
in April amid a dramatic decline
in car production ahead of the
original Brexit deadline, according
to official figures released this
week.
According to the Office for
National Statistics, gross domestic
product (GDP) plunged by 0.4 per
cent in April from a month earlier
as factories across the country
launched a wave of planned
shutdowns to avoid any disruption
that could have been unleashed by
a no-deal Brexit.
These figures are worse than
most economists had predicted.
A recent survey of
1,400 Spanish shoppers
showed that only 2%
would be happy to
purchase the majority of
their fresh food online.
76% said they would
never do this and 20%
said they would buy the
odd product but not all.
Online shopping has
Britain’s manufacturers planned
around leaving the EU on March
29th as soon to depart PM, Theresa
May, took the country to the brink
of leaving without a deal, before
agreeing on an extension until 12
April and then delaying the process
until the end of October. While
economic growth had strengthened
as factories rushed to stockpile
materials ahead of the deadline, the
latest snapshot from the economy
shows that production slumped
after the target date passed.
Rob Kent-Smith, the head of
taken off in a big way in
Spain and while many use
supermarket platforms
for home deliveries this
is more for goods such
as cleaning products,
tinned foods, toiletries
and so forth. The main
reason is that shoppers
GDP at the government statistics
agency, said the decline was caused
by falling car production amid the
uncertainty over leaving the EU.
The TUC General Secretary,
Frances O-Grady commented:-
“Industry is paying the price for the
government’s Brexit chaos.”
“This is the biggest decline in
car production since 1974. With
plants like Ford Bridgend already
closing, it’s time to get serious
about the scale of the threat facing
our economy.
“Politicians must do whatever it
takes to stop a bad deal or a no-deal
Brexit.”
Spanish suspicious of online food shopping
like to select their own
products and don’t trust
the delivery company to
do this on their behalf,
while delivery costs and
force of habit were also
cited.
The survey was
carried out by an
association linked to
supermarkets who found
that the householders
most likely to use the
service were women
with large families and
high incomes who tend
to be time poor and cash
rich. Those who do use it,
regularly or occasionally,
almost always use the
same supermarket they
use in person to buy food.
Paying the price of piracy
EACH Spanish
inhabitant is losing
the equivalent of €146
due to uncollected tax
revenue and other
tariffs from the illegal
sale of counterfeit
goods in the country.
The treasury is losing
6,700 million euros
per annum according
to a report by the EU
by Simon Russell
Intellectual Property
Office last week,
which is based in
Alicante. The figure
across the EU is a
staggering 60,000
million euros, or 7.4%
of total sales revenue.
The main products
pirated are perfumes,
clothing, sports
goods, handbags,
toys, jewellery,
watches, phones and
even wines. Based on
lost manufacturing
output half a million
fewer jobs have been
created across the
European Union than
if piracy of goods did
not exist.

HOW DOES POWER OF ATTORNEY
WORK IN SPAIN?
If you decide to buy a property in Spain,
it may not always be possible for you to
be in the country to sign utility contracts,
property deeds, tax matters, or to apply for
any important documents that you need to get
everything sorted.
That´s where the experience of Sun
Lawyers comes into play, as appointing us to
act for you through a Power of Attorney would
be the best way to make sure that everything is
done, and crucially done correctly.
If you contact us at Sun Lawyers, we´ll
happily take over the paperwork, whilst you
sit back and relax wherever you may be.
What is a Power of Attorney and
who I can give it to?
A Power of Attorney is an official
document signed before a public notary and
executed as a deed by a person giving the
Power of Attorney (donor) in favour of a third
party.
Normally you give this to a Spanish
lawyer, who will help you with the purchase
of the property, and somebody like us at
Sun Lawyers will have the power on your
authority to sign contracts, make decisions,
as well making sure that any documents are
properly submitted.
What are the contents of Power of
Attorney and what does it include?
For example, a Power of Attorney for
buying your Spanish home will often include
clauses allowing your lawyers to open, close
and operate bank accounts; to set up direct
debits; to get an N.I.E. Certificate; to arrange
utility contracts; pay taxes; submit forms; and
send and receive notifications to and from
different authorities.
It can be a big list, but Sun Lawyers will
take care of it all, acting on your instructions.
A Power of Attorney will generally contain:
- Your personal details as well as the details
of the lawyer that you wish to appoint.
- The details of the notary public who
witnessed you signing the Power of Attorney.
- An apostille issued by the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office (if granted outside
Spain).
The Power of Attorney can focus on a
specific procedure or property, or it can be of
a broader nature.
Your lawyer will not be able to do anything
on your behalf that is not included in the
Power of Attorney.
How to make the Power of Attorney?
To go through the draft of your Power of
Attorney you can either go to a Spanish notary
public in Spain, or a public notary in your
country of origin.
It is important that you get a reliable
independent lawyer to do this for you, to be
sure that the correct legal wording is used on
the draft.
Sun Lawyers recommend that you ask
your lawyer or notary to draft an English and
Spanish bilingual version, which ensures that
you understand the document completely.
If it is granted in Spain, it would be wise
to secure the services of an interpreter you
don’t speak Spanish and your Lawyer does
not speak English.
The majority of Power of Attorneys don’t
have an “expiry date”, unless you include a
clause that specifically states when you would
like it to end.
If you don’t include this clause but decide
in the future that you would like to change
the powers or revoke the Power of Attorney
entirely, you should contact a lawyer or notary
public and they will be able to help you with
this.
Power of Attorney is automatically ended if
you or your attorney pass away or terminated
by declared insolvency or the incapacity of
either the lawyer or the person that he or she
may be acting for.
Crucially, you can also revoke the Power of
Attorney at any time, which is done through
a Deed of Revocation, with the lawyer being
told about it, once it has been executed by the
notary.
of Attorney, do get in touch with us at Sun
If you have made the decision or are
thinking about making the decision to
go solar, then you may be wondering -
how does sunlight actually gets turned
into electricity?
You may have other questions too,
such as will your solar panels work on
cloudy days, and will your panels work
at night via moonlight, which, after all,
is reflected sunlight? To find out the
answer to these questions and a few
more, please read on.
How do solar
photovoltaic (PV) panels
work?
Solar panels absorb the
sun’s energy throughout the
day and convert it into direct
current (DC) electricity.
Most homes and businesses
Solar Power FAQs
run on alternating current
(AC) electricity, so the DC
electricity is then passed
through an inverter to
convert it to usable AC
electricity. At that point,
you either use the electricity
in your house or send it back
to the electric grid.
The brighter it is outside,
the greater the output of
the modules – regardless of
whether the sun can be seen
directly or not. Rain actually
helps to keep your solar
panels operating efficiently
by washing away any dust
or dirt.
What are the financial
benefits of solar energy?
When you install a solar
energy system on your
property, you save money
on your electricity bills and
protect yourself against
rising electricity rates in
the future. How much
you can save depends on
the utility rates and solar
policies in your area, but
going solar is a smart
investment regardless of
where you live.
How do I know if solar
is right for me?
Well, living in Spain,
sunny days is not a
problem, with an average
of 320 days of sunshine
a year, solar is definitely
right for you.
Do clouds and rain
affect solar panels?
Solar Panels not only
harness direct sunlight
when the sky is clear, but
also the diffused light
when the sky is overcast.
How many panels will I
need?
Solar PV panels vary
greatly in efficiency. The
panels we use generate
between 100-300 watts,
therefore it is not how many
panels you need but how
much power you need.
How much will solar
panel maintenance cost?
Solar panel systems we
install are made of durable
tempered glass and require
little to no maintenance for
the 25 to 35 years that they
will generate power. In most
cases, you don’t even need
to clean your solar panels
regularly.
What do the terms ongrid,
grid-connected, gridtied
and off-grid mean?
On-grid, grid-connected
or grid-tied means connected
to the utility electrical grid.
Off-grid refers to systems
that are not connected to the
utility electrical grid.

Electricity costs have been continuously rising in the
past decades in every country around the world putting
a continuous burden on households and businesses.
The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to
eliminate or reduce electricity bills. One way is by
changing when and how you use the energy needed.
The most comfortable solution would be by shopping
around for an energy contract which suits your needs;
but the real solution that would solve your financial
burden on a long run by eliminating your electricity
bills is a move towards producing, storing and using
your own electricity.
Every household and business situation is different
and the changes for each will be different. So the best
place to start is by understanding how much energy
you use each day (and when), as well as which energy
saving actions will have the biggest impact in your
home. The things to consider include:
The size and features of your
home or your business
The energy efficiency of your
appliances and equipment
Your lifestyle and the times of
day you use most power
The way you manage and
use the equipment around
Your choice of energy retailer
and energy contract.

HOW OFF-GRID POWER WORKS?
Off-grid power systems supply electricity to properties that are not connected to the local utility grid. These
systems are often referred to as ‘stand-alone power systems’ (SAPS), or ‘remote area power systems’ (RAPS).
These systems are independent power stations capable of powering a wide range of applications with reliable
electricity. Whether it be for a small or large new or existing home, business or an entire community, off-grid power
systems are commonly the cleanest and most cost effective solution.
Solar Panels
Solar Panels represent the
most reliable, predictable and
low maintenance source of
energy for off-grid systems.
We offer a range of solar
technologies from leading
manufacturers.
Inverter/Chargers
Domestic appliances
operate on AC current.
Solar and other renewable
sources generate DC current.
An inverter is required to
convert DC current from the
renewable source to usable
Charge Controllers
It might seem redundant to
have an inverter/charger and
a charge controller, but each
serves its own purpose. A
charge controller allows power
from a DC source like a solar
array to charge the battery bank.
Batteries
A truly off grid solar
system must incorporate
batteries to achieve true
energy independence.
Batteries function as
the ‘bank’ where excess
renewable is deposited and
Wind Turbines
Wind turbines can be used
alone, or as part of a hybrid
system, in which their output
is combined with solar. Hybrid
systems are useful in the
winter where cloudy weather
and windy conditions occur
simultaneously.
Generators
If the batteries are empty
or there is a limited amount
of solar energy available, the
inverter/charger will start
the generator. As soon as
the generator is not needed
anymore, it will turn off
automatically.

Worldwide Horizons
Its name was derived from Russia
word Alyaska, or ‘object to which the
sea is directed´and referred originally
to the Alaskan Peninsula.
It is the Northernmost state in
America, it is bordered by Yukon and BC
in Canada, whilst sharing a sea border
with Russia where the territories meet
in the Bering Strait. The state has a
longer Coastline than all of the other
US States combined – an impressive
estimated 55.000 KM of shoreline.
Surprisingly, there are many active
Volcanoes in the area, found in the
many small islands that make up the
State. Home to Mount Shishaldin, an
occasionally smoldering Volcano that
rises 3000 m above the North Pacific
and considered on the most perfect
volcanic cone on Earth due to it s perfect
´
symmetry.
Alaska is also home to millions of lakes
and also large glacial areas, including
the largest in North Aerica, the Bering
Glacier, measured around 5000 km2
however this is now diminishing at the
Glacier thaws with rising temperatures.
All of these natural conditions make
Alaska one of the most interesting places
to visit. Breathtaking scenery is blended
with adventure and luxury. Cruise ships
offer a unique way of getting close to
the Glaciers, departing from Seward in
Anchorage, cruising through the inside
passage via Glacier Bay and terminating
in Vancouver BC. On route, there is
every possibility of seeing wonderful
bald eagles and sea birds swooping over
the waters, humpback and orca whales
amongst others, Puffins, Sea Otters,
Porpoises, Sea Lions… these are just
some of the attractions of the area.
Many people combine a cruise with
one of the many train options that can
take you into the stunning countryside.
Alaska
Luxury companies such as award
winning Rocky Mountaineer offer an
elegant experience in glass topped trains
which travel through Alaska. This can
either be as a luxury tour, where the
train stops in overnight schedules hotels,
or you can take the train as a regular
scheduled departure to take you from A
to B. If you do take the package that they
offer, you are sure not to be disappointed.
With 4 main routes, these trains are the
last word in luxury, cuisine, culture and
adventure. Choose between 3 nights
and up to 19+, the train journey alone
lets you experience the wildlife, but also
offers added extras such as Gondola
rides to areas where you can see Grizzly
bears in their natural habitat, or for the
adventurous, Glacier walking in a guided
group. Prefer an aerial view? Helicopter
rides provide the perfect way to see the
area from a Bird’s Eye view. s best to
It´
speak to an expert when choosing your
package, as, with so many inclusions on
offer, it s easy to get lost in the choices!
´
With tours being on both sides of the
border, remember that both America
and Canada require Visas to be obtained
prior to your journey. Air Canada
have recently announced some new
routes to the States from Madrid, as
well as American Airlines offering a
superb service to Seattle, another of the
highlights on this coast. It ´ s also worth
planning a couple of nights extra pre
and post holiday/cruise/train journey as
the cities of Vancouver and Seattle have
much to offer too!

TRAVEL- 5 things you probably didn't know about the Canary Islands
A group of tiny rocks
in the Atlantic, a stone’s throw
from the North West African
coast, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote,
La Graciosa, La Gomera, and
La Palma are blessed with a
wonderfully warm year-round
climate, don’t suffer the same
ferocious weather systems
as many tropical winter sun
destinations can, and have long
been at the end of direct flights
from the most U.K. airports.
Ideal options for those after
heat, beaches, and excellent
fish, whilst all this may be quite
obvious here are five other
things you probably didn’t know
about the Canary Islands.
1.Canaries have nothing
to do with it.
The name ‘canary’ couldn’t
be less connected with the little
yellow birds if it tried. In fact,
‘canaria’ comes from the Latin
word for ‘dog’, with one ageold
yarn suggesting that the first
European settlers arrived to find
large K9s inhabiting the island,
hence the Christening. More
likely, though, is that Romans
named seals ‘sea dogs’, and
these islands used to be home to
a large population of the mammals,
with the rest now history.
2. The highest point in Spain is
here.
When people talk about
the Spanish mountains they
immediately think of the Pyrenees
range, separating Spain from
France. That may be true for the
mainland, but in fact the highest
peak in all of Spain’s territories is
on Tenerife. El Teide stretches up
3,718m, towering above the tiny
island to offer panoramic views
and some incredible climbing
challenges. You’ll also find the
largest collection of astronomical
telescopes in the world here too,
just in case stargazing takes your
fancy.
3. Franco’s fascists came from
here
Perhaps not the proudest
moment in the region’s history,
Francisco Franco was the General
Commandant of the Canaries,
stationed in Las Palmas, Gran
Canaria. From there he began
devising the revolution that would
see mainland Spain descend
into civil war, dividing a nation
Image (C) Tony Hisgett
and leaving behind a legacy of
heartache, bloodshed and ruthless
battles.
4. There’s a little bit of the
Canaries in Texas
The city of San Antonio, Texas,
famous for the Alamo amongst
other things (including the Spurs
basketball team) was actually
founded by people from the
Canary Islands, who would go on
to fight shoulder to shoulder with
luminaries such as Jim Bowie
and Davy Crocket. Incidentally
(or not), Sao Paulo, Brazil, was
also founded by someone from
Tenerife. Perhaps ironically,
both San Antonio and Sao Paulo
are now individually (far) more
populated than all the Canary
Islands combined.
5. People talk by whistling
La Gomera is home to
a particularly curious language
known as Silbo Gomero, which
involves whistling rather than
actually speaking words. In
the 20th Century, as radio and
telecommunications grew in
popularity and accessibility, the
musical dialect was in danger of
dying out completely, so the local
government introduced lessons in
schools. As of 2009 it was on the
UNESCO list as a ‘Masterpiece of
the Oral and Intangible Heritage
of Humanity’. No, we didn’t know
that list existed either.

Michael Douglas reduced the price of his summer paradise
by Simon Russell
How to you fancy a Mallorca
villa that has hosted some of the
top names in Hollywood, and
is currently owned by Michael
Douglas?
The actor himself has provided
a voice-over for a new marketing
video to promote his luxurious
cliff-side villa on the island.
After initially putting the
sprawling 250 acres estate on
the market for a staggering 70
million euros in 2014, Douglas
has now personally described the
splendours of the home - which has
seen the new price slashed by half
to help net some interest.
In the two minute video, he
reveals he ‘fell under the spell of the
S’Estaca in 1989’ when he bought
it with his then-wife Diandra Luker
for just four million euros, but
his ‘life has now taken a different
course’ - prompting him to give
another push in selling the estate -
which is home to two cottages and
five apartments.
Michael explains that the
accommodation, which houses
up to twenty people, contains ten
bedrooms and eleven bathrooms.
If you don´t like the panoramic
views there is plenty of
entertainment to keep you busy
including a home theatre, a library,
a wine cellar and a vineyard.
Proving that the house has been
well utilised by Michael, he has
hosted parties for the likes of Tom
Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Nicole
Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer.
The high-asking price forced
Sotheby´s to take it off the market
last October, but now with the
personal video from Douglas, and
more importantly a lower sale
price, some movement on S-Estaca
is expected soon.
Perhaps it could be you?

Affordable happiness
UK estate agents Savills have
published a list of the happiest places
for people to live in the UK that still
have affordable housing, at least by
British standards. The “happiness
index” is compiled by the Office for
National Statistics each year and most
of the places near the top of the list
are inexpensive locations to buy a
property. Lichfield, for example, is
second on the list but housing costs
around 30% more than elsewhere in
the West Midlands.
Waveney (Suffolk) tops Savills
list with a high happiness level and
an average house price of £186,500,
a third less than the regional average.
Copeland (Cumbria), Breckland
(Norfolk), Sedgemoor (Somerset) and
Staffordshire Moorlands complete
the top 5. Generally, the reason for
the lower prices is poor transport
links, especially with London and
other major cities. However, for many
residents, the remoteness of the towns
seems to be what makes them such
good places to live. In many such
places employment is also a problem
due to the rural setting, meaning a lot
of locals have moved out and a lot of
retirees have moved in, embracing the
rural lifestyle often after a city career.
RENTAL REMOVALS
The number of people being evicted
from their properties in Spain for not
paying their rent has gone up in the first
three months of 2019.
Official figures show that there have
been over 10 thousand home evictions
for non payment, a rise of five point
two per cent on the same period last
year.
Unpaid rent accounted for 67 per
cent of removals, with other factors
like foreclosures accounting for the
rest, with the overall figure standing at
just over 15 thousand between January
and March.
That final statistic of 15 thousand is
actually two point two per cent lower
compared to the 2018 returns, which is
a positive indication in regards to the
mortgage and buying markets.
There is a concern though over
problems for less well-off tenants, with
consumer groups calling changes in
the Urban Lease Law, and a restriction
on the levels of rent that can be charged
in less wealthy areas of Spain, and
equated to the type of housing that is
offered.
Big drop in
foreclosures
THE National Institute
of Statistics has said that
foreclosures in Spain have
fallen by almost 25% in
the first quarter of 2018,
a clear indicator of a more
stable housing market.
Foreclosures are when the
mortgage lender attempts
to recover the balance of
a loan from a borrower
who has stopped making
payments by forcing the
sale of the property, and
by Simon Russell
is often the first step to
eviction. Between January
and March this year
many people who were in
danger of being foreclosed
escaped the threat due
to improved financial
circumstances, usually by
finding employment. The
community with the most
foreclosures is Catalonia
followed by Valencia.

FACTS AND FIGURES
New building licences
reached just over 75
thousand in Spain last year,
according to the Ministry of
Development.
That´s the highest figure
since 2011, but to things
into perspective, a total of
735 thousand licences were
granted at the height of the
property boom 13 years
ago!
The southern region of
Andalucia headed the list
for new building licences
in 2018 with 19,314, up
by 56.2 per cent, followed
by the Madrid region with
15,837, up by a more modest
13 per cent.
Other government figures
show that property prices are
continuing to rise, despite
previous suggestions that
there might be a slowing
down.
Figures for the first three
months of 2019 show a rise
of almost seven per cent on
the same period last year.
The largest price hikes
were in the Catalunya and
Madrid regions.
Meanwhile, Spain´s
notaries have sounded a note
of caution over their most
Lack of
builders
threatens
recovery
recent returns for April, with
a modest one per cent rise in
sales over 12 months.
The massive rider on that
has to be that the Easter
holiday period fell in April
this year, and that would
have inevitably taken a lot
of steam out of the market.
The notaries said that
over 50 thousand deals were
completed in April and that
the average price paid for
a unit was down by one
point seven per cent over a
year, whilst the number of
mortgages granted fell by
one per cent.
THE Valencian
Federation of Constructors
has warned of the shortage
of construction workers
in the region, especially
skilled professionals.
The president of the
federation, Francisco
Zamora, issued the
warning last week, saying
it threatened to hamper
the growing recovery in
the previously troubled
sector. He said labour
shortages can slow down
or even stop a project,
pushing up the final cost.
“Neither training or public
investment are up to
current demands” said Mr
Zamora. He also stated
that technology and new
materials mean even some
experienced workers are
falling behind, and new
workshop schools are
urgently required. Due to
the last recession which
hit the building industry
so hard, half a generation
of young people opted
not to start careers in the
sector, something else
causing labour issues.
Positive Mental Attitude might
be good for more than mood
They say there are two
fundamental people-types
in the world. You’re either
glass half-empty, or glass
half-full.
Recently there has
been plenty said about
the merits of being ‘half
full’- apparently wealthy
people gravitate towards
positive people, and avoid
those that err on the side
of pessimism. Whether
that’s true or not, we’re
sure there will be a few
figures out there to prove
that the majority of the
public would prefer not
to spend an afternoon
with someone who is
just plain miserable and not much fun at
all. But have you ever wondered whether
a negative attitude is actually bad for your
health?
Nope, can’t say we did, either. That is
until reading about a study in the American
Journal of Epidemiology, which says that
if we look towards the future as a positive
thing we’re more likely to boost our physical
health. Or at least this seems to be true for
women. More than 70,000 were surveyed,
and it was found that optimists were less
likely to contract potentially fatal conditions
like cancers, heart disease, and lung
problems, or suffer strokes. Quite the claim,
in some ways the reason behind this is pretty
self-explanatory.
Positive people are statistically more likely
to be active, rather than sedentary, and this
means getting more exercise on the whole.
However, experts are becoming increasingly
sure that the positive attitude in itself is
important for overall health, too, which is
interesting, to say the least, but certainly
poses one problem in today’s international
climate. With so much negativity in the press
overall, is it going to be that easy to maintain
a sunny disposition with talk of World War
III, climate change, and globalised economic
catastrophe rarely far from the agenda?

Hepatitis C (The Silent Epidemic)
Hepatitis C is a blood borne virus which affects
the liver. It can cause inflammation, scarring and even
cirrhosis of the liver. Liver cirrhosis can increases the
risk of developing liver cancer and liver failure.
The incubation period can be from 2 weeks to 6
months.
The problem with having Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
is that you will not necessarily know you have it.
The symptoms can be vague and often common to
all of us. Symptoms include tiredness, insomnia,
depression, skin problems, abdominal pain and
digestive problems.
Approximately 20%-30% of people who have
contracted HCV will have symptoms.
We know 20% of people with HCV will fight
the virus and clear it within the first 6 months of
contracting it. Unfortunately for the remaining 80%
it will become a chronic condition. Chronic HCV
infection is often asymptomatic and the virus may
be present for years. Unfortunately these people will
have liver damage ranging from mild to severe.
HCV is a tough resilient virus that can survive
outside the body in very small droplets of blood. If
in room temperature it can remain infectious from 16
hours to 4 days on surfaces. In a confined container
like a syringe, it can survive up to 4 weeks.
Blood has the highest concentration of the virus thus
a small trace of blood may have enough virus in it to
cause infection. Sharing intravenous drug equipment
is especially high risk behaviour. Before we all think
it is only drug addicts at risk, we need to understand
other areas of risk where it can be contracted.
Less common ways to have contracted HCV
• Infected mother to baby before or during
birth
• Unprotected sexual intercourse with someone
who has HCV (low risk)
• Medical and dental treatment in high risk
countries where unsterile equipment may be used
FRIday 14th June 2019
• Tattoo, piercings, acupuncture, electrolysis
and semi permanent make up where unsterile
equipment may be used
• Sharing razors, toothbrushes that may have
been contaminated with blood from a HCV positive
person
Who should get tested?
• People who have injected illegal drugs even if
only on one occasion years ago
• People who have received blood transfusions or
blood products in the UK before July 1991
• People who received blood products in the UK
before 1986
• People with HIV
• Healthcare workers after needlestick injuries with
known HCV positive blood
• Patients with symptoms of liver disease eg.
abnormal liver enzyme tests
• Children born to HCV positive mums
The test for HCV is a blood test. Early, prompt
diagnosis improves prognosis.
HCV is treatable. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine
to protect us against it (unlike Hepatitis B).
Treatment can take from 6 months to a year.
Different medications are used some injectable and
some orally. The medication encourages an immune
response to fight the virus. An anti viral will also be
used to stop the virus replicating.
There are side effects, some people being affected
and some not. Lifestyle changes have to be made and
alcohol intake at least reduced, preferably stopped
completely.
Passive Smoking
Takes Its Toll On Pets
The dangers of passive smoking are well
documented and most of us are fully aware
of the risks.
But how many of us have thought about
the impact smoking has on our pets - and
exactly what damage we are doing to our socalled
best friends?
The sad truth is that dogs can and do
suffer because of the presence of smokers and
continuous exposure to cigarette smoke.
Forced to be a passive smoker, your dog’s
life is definitely in danger.
A vet with leading pet food manufacturer
Butcher’s points out that cigarette smoke is
toxic to humans and as dogs breathe the same
air as us, they too inhale clouds of the toxic
fumes.
He warns: “Therefore their respiratory
system is exposed to the effects of nicotine
poison, those cells exposed to the deadly
substance will result in their neurons dying -
such as cells in the brain and nerve cells.
“Dogs with sensitive eyes that are exposed
to the irritant smoke can suffer from tears or
tearing and conjunctivitis.”
Dogs that regularly breathe cigarette
smoke suffer mostly from cancer of the lungs
and the sinus area and are more likely to
develop serious conditions such as asthma.
If more than one family member smokes the
greater the risk your dog will be diagnosed
with one of these conditions.
He adds: “Long-snouted breeds are usually
affected around the nose and sinuses while
dogs with medium and short muzzles suffer
from lung cancer.
“The difference is due to the length of the
respiratory tract and, thus, the distance that
must be overcome to the carcinogenic agent,
from the smoke in the nostrils to the alveoli of
35
the animal.
“One of the metabolites of cigarette smoke
is found in high concentrations in the urine of
animals whose owners smoke cigarettes and
it is associated with the occurrence of bladder
cancer.”
The impact is more severe on puppies as
they have smaller lungs and their immune
systems are less developed than older dogs,
so this makes them even more vulnerable to
infection. They also breathe faster, meaning
they take in the chemicals very quickly.
Signs of distress to look out for include
your dog wheezing, coughing or struggling to
breathe - or if your dog tries to leave the room
to get away from a smoker then this could be
a signal that it’s making life difficult for them.
Dogs spend a lot of time sleeping indoors
where they may be constantly breathing in
stale smoke. But not only do they breathe in
smoke, it also accumulates in their fur, making
them smelly and uncomfortable, and putting
them at risk of ingesting harmful chemicals if
they lick their fur.
Smoking also has a negative influence
on the canine sense of smell. For working
dogs this is particularly important as
smoke exposure dramatically impairs their
heightened canine senses. And remember,
cigarettes are poisonous to dogs. Make sure
you dispose of cigarette butts safely and don’t
leave them lying around where your dog
could easily eat them.
The advice is not to smoke around your
dog but go outside instead, as even going into
another room is not effective because 85% of
smoke is invisible and does not smell.
Even better, give up smoking altogether
and get outside for some more fun with your
dog - you’ll both feel much better for it!
Back In
SCOTS ON TOP
Forget countries like New
Zealand, Australia, and even our
own abode of Spain, as readers of
the influential travel guide, Rough
Guide, have voted the country as
‘the most beautiful country in the
world’, beating Canada to the
number one slot.
In its listing which also
includes places like Finland,
Norway and South Africa, the
guide says: ‘And finally, the
world’s most beautiful country
is revealed: Scotland. Who can
deny that these wild beaches,
deep lochs and craggy castles are
some of the most wonderful and
beautiful sights in the worlds?’
England came in at number
seven in the readers’ poll, and
Wales was number 10 in the
list, meaning that Britain does
extremely well amongst the
thoughts of visitors.
Malcolm Roughead, chief
executive of VisitScotland, was
understandably excited with the
result.
‘We are delighted that
Scotland has received this
remarkable accolade from Rough
Guide readers, but of course it will
not be a surprise to anyone who
has encountered our wonderful
country,’ he said.
I have only been to Scotland
on four occasions over some
three decades, and I loved every
moment of it from the scenery to
the friendly welcome, which is
in big contrast to what you get in
some places south of the border.

Britain
A RIGHT OLD EXCUSE
An engaged couple says
their wedding plans have been
scuppered by changes to next
year’s early May bank holiday
in the UK, but I just don´t get
the logic of their argument.
May Day is traditionally held
on the first Monday of May but
has been put back to Friday,
May 8th to commemorate the
75th anniversary of VE Day.
But the problem is that Simon
Aherne and Anna Cousins,
from Cardiff, claim that their
guests will not be able to attend
the ceremony on Sunday, May
3rd in Gloucestershire, because
of the “lack of notice”.“Most
of our family are teachers or in
the entertainment business so
the bank holiday worked out
perfectly for us,” Mr Aherne
said. He explained that while
they respected the wish to mark
the VE Day anniversary, as both
their families have a history of
military service, they questioned
the lack of warning. Mr Aherne
added: “We have invited more
than 100 people, but it looks like
we might barely get 20 now.
HUNT´ S THE NAME
Why is it such a problem for UK that you can make the four-letter
broadcasters to properly enunciate Tory slip(because of past mistakes from
leadership candidate, Jeremy Hunt´s other broadcasters), and because of your
surname? There seems to be a stream brain cells processing that concern, you
of such incidents lately, which can only actually do it yourself, or perhaps trip
Even the superb Victoria Derbyshire instant recording to be posted on social
I can understand where this is coming governor. Perhaps Jeremy just ought to
Andy
Mansell’s
Tyson’s weed resort Lorraine
Ex-heavyweight boxing champ Mike
Tyson has revealed plans to open a 407
acre cannabis resort in California.
The Tyson Ranch will compliment his
cannabis company Tyson Holistic Holdings,
which he created in 2016, which
sells marijuana strains, edibles and
merchandise.
Work started on the ranch near Desert
Hot Springs in 2017 and there are plans
for an onsite hotel in the early stages.
It will also include a Tyson University,
that will be dedicated to teaching cannabis
growing techniques to would-be
farmers.
The former boxer will also use the
ranch for research purposes as he
dedicates himself to his new business
venture.
Visitors will be able to smoke anywhere
on the Californian plot, but marijuana will
not be available to buy on the site, which
seems a little strange.
Anyway, the ranch will also include a festival
venue and the world’s longest lazy
Tyson
loves to
blow
river, which will apparently take an hour
to float down.
Of course, that’s unless you’ve smoked a
particularly strong spliff when it’ll probably
take you a day to realise you’ve been
going around in circles and are actually
back where you started.
Morning TV host Lorraine, who’s
been on our daytime screens for
what seems forever, just went up a
few notches in my book, when she
snubbed former GMTV colleague, and
prospective Tory leadership candidate
Esther Mcvey earlier this week.
On a live link up with the breakfast
show’s current presenters, Piers
Morgan and Susanna Reid, who’d just
interviewed McVey, Susanna asked
whether she remembered Esther, Lorraine
replied with a blunt “Yep. Yes, I
do”. Piers Morgan then asked whether
they got on, to which Kelly replied
that she “didn’t remember” because it
was “such a long time ago”. Lorraine
later denied any feud between the
two of them but went on a rant about
Brexit and the negative effect it has
had on the country. “I’m sick to death
of the whole toxic sphere,” she said. “I
strongly disagree with her on LGBT+
rights. I just thought to myself, I’ve just
had enough of this. I think she speaks
for a lot of us, does our Lorraine and
much more in tune with things than
most politicians.
GOT in Benidorm
Joan’s a delight
Seeing photos of the
glamorous Hollywood
legend Joan Collins aged
86, oozing summer chic
in a gorgeous teal printed
dress on Tuesday, as she
strolled through St Tropez
with husband Percy Gibson,
thirty-two years her junior,
made me remember a little
anecdote about her.
Joan famously joined
the cast of ITV’s Benidorm
for a couple of seasons,
playing hotel owner, Crystal
Hennessey-Vaas.
I once asked writer and
creator DerrenLitten what
she was like to work with,
expecting him to tell me how
horrific the experience had
been and how she’d made
diva like demands on the
production team.
To the contrary, he told me,
she was an absolute delight
and a true professional, who
always turned up on set at
the correct time, knowing all
her lines.
She was always polite and
courteous to other cast
members, crew and extras
were happy to pose for
photos and sign autographs
as long as no one tried to
touch her ….. Unlike some of
her less well known co-stars
apparently.
But is it
Benidorm?
Game of Thrones may be over,
but it never seems to be far from
the minds of celebrity followers.
Earlier this week reports on
social media suggested actress
Sophie Turner, Sansa Stark in the
series, in the company of some
friends, said to include co-star
Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) had
arrived in Benidorm on a girls
holiday. The party were alleged
to have flown into Alicante from
London on a private jet before
travelling onto a Benidorm Hotel.
Photos of the group on rooftops
and beside pools hashtagging the
girls in Benidorm appeared on
Twitter, but the accommodation
wasn’t named and the only
buildings in view were a couple
of tall skyscrapers surrounded by
palm trees. Eventually, it was all
revealed to be fake news, when
one pic showed a lollipop shaped
tower, pinpointing the photo to
Berlin rather than Benidorm.
Sophie Turner was married to Joe
Jonas in a ceremony in Las Vegas
on May 1st apparently, but maybe
she wasn’t in Las Vegas after all.
Perhaps she actually got married
at the three star, Hotel Las Vegas,
in Calle Tomas Ortuno, Benidorm
instead, who can be sure?
Joan was a
true Benidorm
professional
Katy and Taylor
at peace
Ten
years after they became inseparable,
and following several fallouts and public
spats, it seems that Katy Perry and Taylor
Swift have finally made peace with each
other.
Now the pair have officially put all the
drama of their feud behind them, in favour
of baking cookies and making peace.
After a rocky road - which most recently
involved Katy offering Taylor an olive
branch (literally) in May 2018, it appears
things have calmed down altogether, and
the pair are friends once again.
“feels good @taylorswift,” Katy wrote on
Twitter, alongside a photograph of a plate
of cookies and icing which reads “peace
at last”.
Katy also tagged the geolocation
as “let’s be friends”, suggesting all
animosity is dead and gone.
Well, I’m so happy about that, now I can
sleep in peace at night myself!
Katy cooks
in peace.

Making Every Copy Count!
The Weekender Newspaper makes sense of the distribution of its
weekly print run using its new slogan “Making Every Copy Count”.
Taking on board the fact that so many other publications fail with its distribution efforts the bosses of The Weekender got their
heads together to make sure that they would have the most cost effective and full proof system in place, not only for the protection
of the huge weekly print cost but equally important for more than one hundred paying advertisers.
What we do!
* We deliver from 8am Friday’s being the only Weekend read across the regions of South and North Costa Blanca with 25,000 copies each week.
* Our trusted distribution teams are employed directly by us not sub-contracted individuals giving us full control of our delivery routes and tracking.
* Each bundle is unwrapped and placed in our distribution stands not left on the floor or outside on the street.
* We receive time stamped photo images from each delivery point providing a tracked proof of delivery.
* We monitor the quantities of each distribution point allowing us to adjust the number of copies being left to minimise waste.
44 FRIDAY 6TH JULY 2018
Sports & Local News
For the SAMM races on June 2nd, 10 boats crewed by
15 members came out for the morning race with the wind
NEN 6.5 knots. All got a good start except Sirocco who
was way off the line when the gun went and this was the
start of several incidents that affected the race, The Drama.
Sirocco had problems setting her foresail and eventually
started the race 68 minutes late but did manage to complete
one lap before the finish.
except the notable exception of the 3rd placed boat Cuatro
at 469.02 secs and 4th Topaz at an incredibly close 469.05
secs.
The afternoon race started in an E 6/7 knot wind which
gradually built to 8/9 knots. This is perfect for the SAMM
fleet as it is not so strong to make the lighter dinghies
struggle but of sufficient strength to get the heavier day
boats sailing well, leading to the The Excitement.
BENITACHELL BOWLS CLUB
NORTERN VALENCIAN CHAMPIONS
Benitachell Bowls Club
has successfully seen off all
the Northern Bowls Clubs to
win the Northern Valencian
Champions League. Playoff
against the South will take
place at Mont y Mar Bowls
Club on the 26th June.
Wednesday afternoon,
5th June, saw the final game
take place at the BBC v El
Cid Bowls Club. The games
consist of a Rinks game, a
Triples game, a Pairs game
and a Ladies singles and a Gents singles.
BBC required three points to win and it
was a nail biting competition right down
to the wire. BBC Ladies singles were won
by Mary Cockle v Betty Anderson with
only two shots difference in the game, this
awarded two points to BBC. The BBC
also won the Rinks game with Captain
Jeff Richards, Brian Doggett, Trefor
Congratulations to this year’s WINNERS
Carol and Dudley Davies from BBC. Beating
Harry and Jackie Johnston from Quesada
in the final. Losing semi finalists were
Paul Truncheon and Clive Scott and Leigh
Weatherall and Stewart Beattie both teams
from El Cid. Special mention for Leigh as
this was his first competition and has only
been bowling for a few months! The 3 day
competition saw an exciting last day bowling
with some big changes in group positions
following the last group games. 5 group
winners plus 3 best runners up going through
to the quarter final. All 8 teams progressing
had scored at least 4 wins out of 5!
At the presentations, Club Captain
Yvonne Briden thanked Andrew Walkerdine
Evans and Gail Chick gaining another two
points, there score gave enough of a shot
difference to gain the extra two points. The
final result was six points to each club.
This is the second Northern
Championship that the club has won
this year, having already won the L.L.B
(Levante Lawn Bowls) North/South
League Championship earlier in the year.
Congratulations to one and all.
El Cid Bowls Club - HomeEspana Aussie Pairs
from sponsors HomeEspana for their
continued generous support, the competition
organizers Match Secretary Stewart Beattie
and Tournament Secretary Paul Truncheon
and all the staff at El Cid.
The competition this year had an entry
of 30 teams with 7 different bowls clubs
represented including La Marina and
Quesada from South of Alicante. We look
forward to seeing everyone again next year.
The Drama and The Excitement - SAMM
The start line/gate had been set at a slight angle to
the wind and was difficult for most boats to negotiate.
Ginetta got it completely wrong, snagged the port mark’s
mooring line and dragged the buoy out of position. This
caused most of the following boats to sail way off their best
course before their lap time could be recorded. At this point
Ginetta decided to retire.
Next came the invasion of two canoes, carrying two
women and five young girls aged about 8. They did not
have the skill or strength to battle the wind, which had built
to 7/8 knots from the east, and just kept going round in
circles in the path of the boats. They were told to steer to
the leeward of the jetty to get sufficient shelter to reach the
beach.
The support boat re-positioned the gate buoy and the
race continued, with some very close racing without
incident until the Radial tacked too close and to windward
of Dos, heeled a lot and caught the shroud on Dos with her
mast top, precipitating a slight collision. The Radial had to
do a 720 penalty but Dos did the same, which probably put
her one place lower in the finishing order.
The corrected average lap times were well spaced
All boats crossed the start line in a bunch, most on the
favoured port tack but Mistral chose starboard and had right
of way, which caused lots of shouting and deft manoeuvring
by those on port to keep out of her way. The same occurred
at the first mark as almost the whole fleet tried to round
together.
The leading three completed their first lap within 5
seconds of one another and then continued round the
course with just inches between them and this very close
racing continued throughout the race.
The corrected times were equally close. The winner
recording an average lap time of 333.86 seconds, 2nd
339.90, 3rd 346.33, 4th350.08 with the tail enders not far
behind.
Exciting for the competitors and equally exciting for the
spectators.
First race result 1st Radial, 2nd Omega, 3rd Cuatro.
Second race 1st Mistral, 2nd Radial, 3rd Cuatro.
BARCELONA BECKONS
by Alex Trelinski
An exciting finish
between four riders
in the Italian MotoGP
at the start of the
month and the firstever
win for Italy´s
Danilo Petrucci has
teed things up nicely
as the championships
return to Spain
for this Sunday´s
Catalunya Grand
Prix.
Despite coming
second in Italy,
Spain´s world
champion Marc
Marquez extended
his lead in the
standings to 12 points
over Petrucci´s
Ducati teammate
Andrea Dovizioso.
Ferrari’s Sebastian
Vettel believes
Formula 1 has lost
its way, in the wake of
the penalty that cost him
victory in Sunday´s Canadian
Grand Prix.
The four-time champion
won on the road but
was handed a five-second
penalty for rejoining the
track dangerously and
impeding Mercedes’
Lewis Hamilton.
The German said the
rules had left drivers
sounding “like lawyers”
and that there was “no
edge” to the sport.
“It’s all wrong. I disagree
with where the
But for neutrals
wanting action
and not just
another Marquez
parade(despite
his brilliance), the
Ducati revival augurs
well for some great
races to come,
including Barcelona
this weekend.
There will also be
other Spanish riders
in the mix like Alex
Rins and Maverick
Vinales wanting to
do well on home soil,
with the race starting
at 2.00 pm.
FUMING VETTEL
sport is
now,” Vettel
said.
Ferrari says they have
appealed against the decision,
even though the
rules say that a five-second
penalty is a verdict
against which the right of
appeal does not exist.
The bottom line was
that Ferrari lost their first
win of the F1 season, and
Hamilton is 29 points
ahead of Mercedes teammate,
and 62 clear of an
unhappy Vettel.
It´s back to Europe for
the next race, which is
the French Grand Prix a
week on Sunday.
TOUGH TASK AHEAD
Villajoyosa CF(pictured
before kick-off) have a
mountain to climb if they´re
to get promoted to the Valencian
Regional Third division,
after losing the first leg of
their Preferente play-off final,
four-one at UD Beniganim.
Beniganim were four up
after an hour, with Martin´s
strike ten minutes from time,
giving Villajoyosa some hope
ahead of the return home leg
this Saturday at 6.30 pm.
There are no worries for
Alicante side, CF Intercity,
who thrashed CD Onda fournil
in their away leg, and like
Villajoyosa, host the second
leg tomorrow at 6.30 pm.
And a second team from
Alicante are in the driving
seat for promotion, as Hercules
B take a two-nil lead
to Ribarroja CF tomorrow
night, with a 7.00 pm kickoff.

THE KING OF PARIS
Spain´s Rafa Nadal
said that winning his
12th French Open title on
Sunday was extra special
after a turbulent year where
he considered taking an
extended break because of
injury problems.
Nadal, 33, played just
three events in 2019 prior
to the clay-court season.
by Alex Trelinski
But it ended with
three sets to one win
over Austrian fourth seed
Dominic Thiem in the final
at Roland Garros.
“I’ve had too many
special,” he said.
“One possibility was
POTENTIAL CLASSIC
England’s fourth World
Cup clash takes them to
Hampshire´s Ageas Bowl to
take on fellow big hitters the
West Indies today(11.30 am,
live on Sky Sports).
The two sides played out
a memorable, high-scoring
ODI series in the Caribbean
this winter, which ended in a
by Alex Trelinski
2-2 draw, and more fireworks
are expected, with two of the
world’s most explosive batting
line-ups on display.
After the surprise defeat
to Pakistan, England got their
campaign back on track with
a dominant victory over Bangladesh
at Cardiff, which featured
a brilliant century from
Jason Roy, and a win today
would put them halfway to
the knockout phase.
The Windies have latter
stage ambitions of their own,
having impressed in thrashing
Pakistan and losing narrowly
to Australia.

BRING ON THE ARGIES!
England comes up against
another old international rival
in Argentina in the second
match of the Fifa Women’s
World Cup in Le Havre
tonight(kick-off 9.00 pm, live
on BBC 1).
The Lioness’ got their
campaign off to a winning
start on Sunday with Nikita
Parris and Ellen White on the
score sheet in a 2-1 win over
Scotland in Nice – getting a
helping hand from the video
Two wins from two
securing qualification from
a competitive group that also
includes Japan – who ended
England’s last run in this
competition four years ago at
the semi-final stage.
Argentina is competing in
this competition for the first
time since 2007.
Toni Duggan suffered
a thigh injury that limited
her to light training the day
before the Scotland win and
was subsequently named
Stokes, after her recent knee
problem, but both are likely
to be in contention to start
afternoon as they take on
Japan in what is realistically
for them a must-win match,
kicking off at 3. 00 pm.
