Jane Howard’s Fables from the Farm Jane explains the breeding cycle of the Coopers Farm herd If anyone ever asks us when we calve, I confidently say we have a spring calving herd, which means our 25 cows should all deliver their calves between February and April. Three months is generally deemed an acceptable period of time to be getting up every night to check for new arrivals and for dealing with all the management tasks that calving involves. Truth is, however, we had two cows calve in June this year and two of the old girls have still to deliver their bundles of joy. Old being the key to this conundrum. The natural life span of a cow is about 15 to 20 years, although these are not all reproductive years and typically a British beef cow will be kept in the herd for about 10 to 12 years. Typically, she will ‘see’ the bull for the first time in the summer when she is two (I just love this coy cow parlance) and nine months later will produce her first spring calf. She then gets three months off before going back to the bull for the whole process to start again. All being well, this cycle of events should produce a calf a year, every year. After 10, her teeth may get a bit wobbly (or fall out) which means her cudding (chewing) is less efficient and she will find it harder to maximise the goodness in the dry winter forage, usually hay, so she won’t be in good condition to see that bull again the following spring. And of course, just like humans, her fertility will also decline as she gets on in years. If one had a crystal ball it would be easy to decide when the middle-aged girls should come to the end of their mothering careers and not be put back with “Typically, a British beef cow will be kept in the herd for about 10 to 12 years” the bull to spend a lazy summer of bovine canoodling. Ever the optimist, all too often I give them the benefit of the doubt, one more turn round the block I hear myself say and then I’m surprised when things don’t go exactly to plan. And we can’t blame it on the bull. Rather like the cows he is at his best when he is young and keen and Captain, our new three year old bull, is just that. He will spend the summer months vigilantly patrolling the field passing from cow to cow just checking whether any of them might be coming into season and in need of his amorous advances. A young chap will happily attend to two or three cows in a day. For the more mature gentleman it is an altogether more relaxed affair. For starters there won’t be any patrolling, he will simply wait for the cows to alert him to oestrus. When a cow is coming into season, known as bulling, she will jump on the back of the other cows until she ovulates, when for a few hours she will stand still for the other cows to jump on her. Seeing all this bouncing around the older bull will obviously want a slice of the action but one at a time is generally the order of the day and so some may get missed and that calving pattern gets stretchy again! So I’ve been very firm with myself this year and have brought lots of new young heifers into the herd who – bing – will (should) all conceive first time around, and next year I shall be done and dusted with the calving business in the tightest of tight patterns.
