The Audit Interfaces The Council area has a number of areas where there are formal or informal interfaces and areas with continued interface barriers. These include, in the urban Derry/Londonderry interfaces at Fountain/Bogside, Tullyally/Currynierin and Gobnascale/Irish Street. In Castlederg there are clear demarcations within the town itself. More rural areas and villages also demonstrate separate living patterns, and while not recognised formally as interface areas, patterns of living are similar. The interface areas, whether formal or informal, in rural or urban areas, are often those areas demonstrating significant socio-economic stress. Some are part of the Urban Villages programme and the International Fund for Ireland Peace Walls programme. Rurality The Council area consists of two principal urban areas – Derry/Londonderry and Strabane – urban areas that were a primary focus for the previous Councils. There are a number of significant towns and villages in the Council area and there needs to be a major rural thrust to the programmes and strategy as a whole. The need for capacity building, inclusion and participation from people and organisations in rural areas has been a priority for the Council for many years, and continues to be in this strategy reflected in the balance of funding, distribution of project activity and the nature of the identified programmes. Comparisons on Key Economic Indicators Derry City and Strabane District Council ranks 11th out of the 11 Councils on a range of 11 key socio-economic indicators according to research carried out by The Detail and reported in the fourth Peace Monitoring Report. The Council area has particular low rankings for educational achievement, life expectancy, housing stress, pupils entitled to free school meals, claimant count, median earnings and rates paid. These quality of life indicators play in to the challenges in building a more cohesive community.
