The Audit SURVEY OF YOUTH Overall 88 young people completed surveys at a variety of events throughout the Council area. Young people completing the survey thought good relations was a major priority for work in the Council area with 84% suggesting it was highly or very important. However, only around half (51%) were aware that the Council had a good relations team, although 43% of those replying had attended a good relations activity of some sort. Raising awareness of the good relations team within the overall work of the Council – and of those youth-focused projects supported by the Council – will be incorporated in to the marketing of initiatives. The young people believed there were seven priorities for good relations in the Council area that stood out clearly compared to other priorities provided. These included: • Challenging racism; • Challenging sectarianism; • Involving young people more; • Ending segregation. DCSDC Good Relations 23 More than two thirds of young people believed seven of these priority areas were very important especially challenging sectarianism, challenging racism and involving young people; over 75% believing them very important. A further four priorities were rated very important by over half; and six more scored less than 50%. That does not mean these issues are not considered a core part of good relations work. Indeed some of those issues have been high priorities in years past and need further work to ensure the progress that has been made is sustained. A contentious issue such as bonfire management and alternatives, for example, is recognised by Council and the Peace IV programme as sufficiently important to dedicate a programme to it. Young people who participated in the survey were also asked to identify some ideas for involving them further in good relations work; and to identify those issues that might stop those attending particular Council facilities or events. The ideas mentioned by three or more young people included more cross community events, festivals and dialogue opportunities.
