Townships work on
interchange project
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
Two westside townships are moving
forward with an interchange project that
will serve as a welcome to their respective
communities.
At a recent Prairie Township meeting,
the board gave an update on the highly
anticipated I-270 interchange project.
“The package is complete and the project
is ready to go out to bid,” said Rob
Peters, township administrator for Prairie
Township. “We will put this out to bid soon
and hope to have construction begin in the
fall.”
On June 22 and 23, more than 24 children participated in the second annual Camping in the Hood is Good event at the Hilltop
Butterfly Garden. Shown here are some of the campers with the adult volunteers during a break in the action. Esther Flores, a
community activist with 1DivineLine2Health, said she established the overnight outing to bring children together and to show
them that they are loved.
Camping in the Hood
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Joedean Small walked across the
grass at the small park and garden next
to her home, documenting the happenings
with a camera in tow. As she zoomed
in to get a better view, she gushed about
the momentous occasion.
“I never thought I would see anything
like this here,” said the Hilltop resident
as she watched children, some of whom
were her relatives, doing activities at an
overnight camping event. “To see them
smiling, having fun and to hear their
laughter is just a wonderful thing.”
It was not so long ago that Small
believed good things would never be seen
in her neighborhood.
For years, she said, she had been living
by an alleged dope house and was
stricken by the pervasive sadness emanating
from the property. She said she
began to have a little bit of hope that
things would change when the house was
demolished but soon realized the vacant
lot was also a beacon for those who wanted
to purchase and use drugs.
“It was awful,” Small said. “Just so
awful.”
Whenever she would step outside her
home, she would see trash, alcoholic beverages
and discarded needles scattered
across the ground. Sometimes she would
even see people shoot up.
Like before, she began to lose any semblance
of hope that good things could
happen.
But the environment slowly began to
evolve when the land was donated to
community activist Esther Flores and the
non-profit
organization
1DivineLine2Health a little more than
two years ago.
“When I was told they wanted to turn
this property into a garden and eventual
playground for children in the community,
I was kind of against it,” Small admitted.
“I thought the area was unsafe for
kids.”
Then she started to see the vision
Flores and her band of volunteers had
mapped out for the location and got on
board. But there was hesitation once
again when Flores told her she planned
an overnight camp outing for kids last
year at the Hilltop Butterfly Garden.
“I thought she was crazy,” said Small. “But I have a lot
of faith in Esther and her mission.”
Last year, more than 25 children throughout the Hilltop
area participated in the overnight event known as
Camping in the Hood is Good. It was very much a “winging
it experience” said volunteer Megan Hackman.
“We kind of didn’t know what to expect last year but we
had such a blast anyway,” said Hackman, a senior at
Bishop Ready High School. “When I heard Esther had
planned to have another outing this year, I was super
excited and got several of my school friends to volunteer.”
She said what she loved about the experience last year
was seeing children who might not have had the opportunity
to go camping before have a similar experience in
their own backyard.
Savanna Anderson, 10, was one of those children

Hackman referenced.
“I learned a lot of new stuff (last year),” she said.
She said she couldn’t wait to participate again.
When the time finally came for the second annual
Camping in the Hood is Good event on June 22
and 23, Anderson brought along her younger cousin
Arayah Mayle to experience the fun firsthand.
There were 23 additional children who participated
as well.
Their day started early on June 22 where they
were tasked with setting up tents. Unlike last year,
they were not setting up their camp at the Hilltop
Butterfly Garden but rather the large and fencedin
backyard at Small’s home.
“I offered up our property because our yard is
soft and we have more of it than this space,” Small
said, motioning to the garden that now has a very
active playground area. “I don’t mind that
20-some kids and adults are going to be
sleeping in my backyard tonight. I wouldn’t
care if they spent the whole week here. We
need more of this here in the Hilltop.”
After the tents were set up, the children
aged 6 to 13 had a busy day full of activities
like making wind chimes and bird houses
and writing inspirational messages on
poster boards and spray painted motorcycles
made out of tires. They were treated to balloon
animals, face painting, a meet-andgreet
with reptiles and catered lunch, dinner
and breakfast. They had informative safety
lessons with members of the Columbus divisions
of fire and police. They were told stories
about perseverance around the campfire
by John Rush. And best of all, said
Flores, they got to smile, laugh and have fun
while knowing they are loved by the entire
community.
“These kids here are the future,” said Flores.
“They need to know that people out here in the community
are there for them as they try to make
something of their lives.
“So many of these kids, and not just here at this
camp, are growing up in trauma. We live in a food
desert, we have high rates of poverty and some of
these kids have experienced the horror of losing a
parent or loved one to drug addiction,” she added.
“What our mission is with this camp is to give them
a day away from it all, a day where they can play
Brianna Page, 8, gets to ride on a motorcycle made of tires.
Volunteers from the Refuge Recovery Men program, a local nonprofit
agency, spray painted the creation but campers were
allowed to add their own designs later.
with kids their age, breathe in the fresh air and create.”
Liz Underwood, a local resident who had two grandchildren
participate in the outing, said she is thankful that
Flores and the local businesses and non-profit organizations
pushed forward through the outing pushback last
year and held the event once again.
“A few years ago, I didn’t even want my grandkids to go
down the street, let alone sleep out in tents at night in the
neighborhood,” she said. “I think this camp is a wonderful
idea because it is bringing a lot of kids together and even
the community. It really is the best thing to ever have happened
here.”
Franklin Township finds funds to hire administrator
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
Franklin Township has hired a township
administrator, despite hesitation from
a trustee. At a recent meeting, the board
approved a memorandum of understanding
(MOU) with new Franklin Township
Administrator Mark Potts.
All of the trustees voted in favor of the
MOU, however during previous meetings
trustee Ralph Horn opposed creating the
position or hiring an individual to fill it.
“This has nothing to do with Mark or his
abilities,” Horn said. “My hesitation has to
do with our budget and our remaining balance
for 2019. I have been opposed to
bringing in an administrator because I feel
using these funds will make us really
squeezed for the rest of the year.”
Previously, Horn voted no to the creation
of the position and to filling the position,
but said he voted yes to the MOU
because the other trustees already had
voted in favor of the position and the hiring
of Potts.
“I really haven’t changed by mind, but
Mark was already hired, so there wasn’t
much I could do,” Ralph said. “I had asked
the other trustees if we could delay the hiring
of an administrator until the first of
INTERCHANGE
Construction is expected to be complete
by 2020.
The project would improve the landscaping
around the West Broad Street and
I-270 interchange. It is a collaboration
between Franklin Township, Prairie
Township, Franklin County, Hollywood
Casino, Columbus, Weston Vision and
Haydocy.
The project will include adding landscaping,
LED lighting over the underpass
and sculptures to the interchange. It is
valued at around $900,000.
Previously, it was estimated that maintenance
of the interchange would cost
between $30,000 and $60,000 a year and
organizers were looking for eight partners
to pay approximately $4,500 to $7,500
each per year for the next 20 years.
However, after discussions with partners,
both Prairie and Franklin Township
agreed to maintain the landscaping in
their municipalities.
“More of the square footage for this
project will be in Prairie Township as a
result of how the interchange is configured,”
Peters said. “However, it is important
we both maintain our parts of the
interchange because this is visitor’s first
glimpse into our communities.”
In other news, the board discussed an
upcoming paving project taking place in
both Franklin and Prairie Township near
Havenwood Apartments.
“Franklin Township received a grant to
repave Westport Road,” Peters said.
Portions of Westport Road are also in
Prairie Township, adding an additional
benefit to Prairie Township.
The $2 million project would include
rebuilding Lincoln Park Court and
Nationwide Boulevard. The project also
would include adding sidewalks to the
area. All of these updates are located within
the Havenwood Apartments community
and will help residents better access school
buses and COTA transportation.
The total cost for this project is $2.1
million and the grant Franklin Township
received is for $2 million leaving some
funding Franklin Township would need to
cover. However, the majority of the cost
will be secured via the grant.
Residents also asked leadership how
they can petition for a speed bump on their
road.
“In order for a speed bump to go on a
road, we need to get an accurate traffic
count,” said Stephen Kennedy, township
trustee. “There needs to be at least 500
cars that travel on the road a day and the
majority of cars need to be going 30 miles
per hour above the speed limit.”
The township typically will put a speed
trailer on a road to count the traffic and
the speed of cars to see if the road meets
the criteria for a speed bump. If the road
does not meet the criteria, they may put a
temporary speed bump on the road to slow
traffic down.
next year, but they wanted to do it immediately.”
Potts will be paid an annual salary of
$65,000 a year and will receive vacation,
sick time, a cell phone and health and life
insurance. His total compensation package
including benefits will be approximately
$95,900.
The funding for the administrator position
will come from a combination of the
general fund and money formerly allocated
for the administrative coordinator who was
paid approximately $34,320 a year. After
eliminating that position earlier in the
year, it freed up additional funds to create
the position of administrator.
While Horn has concerns over the funding,
Franklin Township trustees John
Fleshman and Aryeh Alex say they are not
concerned about the township’s budget.
“The person that takes this position
knows it may only be temporary as well,”
Fleshman said. “If we don’t have the funds
to support this position in a year or year
and half, we may need to eliminate it and
all applicants are aware of this. However,
for at least the next year we have the funds
to support this.”
The MOU between Potts and the township
has no end date and Fleshman said he
is confident they will have the funds to continue
the position past the end of the year.
“We definitely have funding for the next
15 months or so,” Fleshman said. “If our
revenue stays at what it currently is, we
should have the funding to continue the
position past this timing.”
Alex said that the fiscal officer has
assured the trustees that there are funds
for this position.
“The fiscal officer said we have the
budget for this and the general fund can
handle it,” Alex said. “Because of that, I am
voting in favor.”
Potts said he is excited for the opportunity
to serve the community.
“I look forward to showing the residents
how the position of the township administrator
can be an effective advocate on
behalf of the township and its residents,
and help the township move forward into
the coming years,” Potts said.
Summer tech program helps kids create apps
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Like many children his age, Preston Miller loves computer
and video games. He said he has learned many skills
while playing on these mediums and has even decided that
he wants to make a career out of it.
“I plan to be a YouTube video game creator,” said the
fourth grade student at Finland Elementary School.
Knowing that he needed to hone the skills required to
be a game creator, Miller was excited to learn that he
would have the opportunity to do so at his school. The only
problem was that it would take place in the summer.
“I love summer break but I really wanted to do this,” he
said.
On June 17 at roughly 8:30 a.m., Miller found himself
back in school for an all-day, week-long programming class
called Techie Camp, which was made possible for students
at Finland Elementary and Franklin Woods Intermediate
through a grant from Battelle and Tech Corps.
“Techie Camp is a hands-on program that teaches
young children the basics of programming,” said Tech
Corps instructor Will Sierzputowski. “For this week, along
with the one that was held last week (June 10 -14 at
Franklin Woods), they are learning how to make an app
but with the stipulation that they make something that
benefits others.”
When the stipulation was announced the first day of
class, Sierzputowski said there were a lot of blank stares.
“I don’t know if it was because it is the summer and
they’re in summer mode or if they thought they would be
making cool apps right away,” said the junior at Ohio
Northern University with a laugh. “Some later told me
they thought they would be doing something that would
make them a lot of money so I think it might have been the
second option.”
But with some prodding, the group of 22 budding creators
brainstormed ways apps can help people, watched
design and programming tutorials, and started putting
their ideas to code.
“I am so impressed by what they came up with,” said
Tech Corps instructor Anna Dake. “There has been a lot of
variety with these groups.”
Olivia Reynolds, 10, she designed an app that helps
people remember recipes.
“If people forget, they can just pull it up and have the
instructions right there,” said the Franklin Woods
Intermediate student.
Hector Flores co-created an app for parents to tell them
the appropriate age for their children to do chores.
“I mow the grass and I’m not sure I should be made to
do it at my age,” said the fourth grader.
Hannah West and Sophia Tope created an “ungrounding
app” that counts down the exact time they are out of
punishment.
“Parents are always trying to tell you that you
have more time in punishment,” said West.
“This app will show them that it is not true
because the countdown tells them the time is up,”
added Tope.
Miller, the future game creator, programmed an
app that allows people to find games on Roblox, a
popular game creation system platform.
“It breaks it up by skill level too,” he said. “If
they’re a beginner and want to play a game where
they find eggs, the app shows them where to find it
for beginning level players.”
Other app creations include Fortnight quizzes,
algebra flashcards, origami instructions, sports
point trackers, and a once-aday
reminder to do something
nice for someone else.
While the students said
there was some difficulties
learning how to program,
they were given great
instruction and plan to continue
making apps well into
the future.
“It was a struggle sometimes
but I had a lot of fun learning how to do this,” said
Reynolds. “Eventually I would like to put something on the
app store but I need to work on a few more things first
before I can reach that level.”
The Techie Camp that was held at Finland Elementary
and Franklin Woods Intermediate marked the first time
the popular camp was held in the South-Western City
Schools District. It was brought to the school, in addition
to the grant, due to the efforts of Kira Shade-Ray, the
Finland Elementary site coordinator for Communities in
Schools, and Helen Cosner, a gifted intervention specialist
with the district. Shade-Ray said that while coding clubs
are growing in popularity at the schools, they would love
to host Techie Camp again next summer.
classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
designed to help
their clients establish mail
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
ads that claim to guarantee
Chucky is back with more ridiculousness
The Reel Deal - By Dedra Cordle
www.columbusmessenger.com
It was choose a toy at the theaters this
weekend. The first and more wholesome
option was “Toy Story,” the fourth installment
of a beloved animated franchise that
has garnered the reputation for making
even the most jaded of adults weep like
newborns. The second and less familyfriendly
option was “Child’s Play,” a reboot
of a beloved slasher that features a murderous
doll who has garnered the reputation
for making even the most jaded adults
weep like newborns. While both were worthy
options for a variety of reasons, I was
only in the mood for one.
“Child’s Play” is not an exact replica of
the original hit from 1988, so points are in
order for base creativity. Though both
share the same ridiculous premise (or is
it?) of a doll coming to life and murdering
people, the latest version focuses more on
the dangers of dependence on technology
and less on the transference of one’s wicked
soul into an inanimate object meant for
children. Whether the latter is a dealbreaker
is entirely up to you.
The film opens with low wage workers
in an overseas manufacturing plant meticulously
crafting the perfect technological
doll for consumers around the world. The
Buddi doll, as it is called, is promised to
provide a “life-long” companion for children,
helping them grow and thrive
through a supportive relationship where
they are their eyes and ears.
Though it is clear not every worker is
thrilled with the product they are creating,
or the job they have, they do it day in and
day out. But one evening, a worker is
caught daydreaming and is fired for envisioning
a better job somewhere else. Before
he can pack up his meager belongings, he
is ordered to finish up his Buddi doll, and
finish up he does. In an act of disobedience,
he strips the Buddi doll of all of its safety
features, including one that removes the
anti-violence protocol.
Naturally, this doll is shipped to the
states where it falls into the hands of a single-mother
Karen Barclay (Aubrey Plaza)
who gives it to her 13-year-old son Andy
(Gabriel Bateman) as a joke/early birthday
present.
At first, Andy is creeped out by the
waxen doll with the voluminous orbs and
slicked hair, but he quickly finds a real
friend in Buddi, now Chucky (voiced wonderfully
by Mark Hamill). As they get to
know each other, Andy begins to suspect
that something is amiss when Chucky gets
possessive of his time spent with human
friends. Then things get weirder, more
dangerous and ultimately deadlier from
then on out.
One could say “Child’s Play” is just
another unnecessary reboot of a beloved
property from an industry out of ideas and
they would be right. But this film is also an
interesting satirical piece about our willingness
to accept advanced technology into
our lives for the sake of convenience and
comfort. Unfortunately, it doesn’t keep
with that thread throughout as it has to
make room for the more gruesome elements
of its predecessor and the overall
film really does suffer because of that.
I have to be completely honest and say I
thought this film was going to be complete
crap. The trailers looked dumb, Chucky
looked even more off than he normally
does, and it just didn’t hit any good note at
all. But when I saw it, I was surprised at
how much I was enjoying it. It has some
dark humor, it pokes fun at itself, it has an
interesting take on tech and I laughed with
it just as much as I laughed at it. I know
this film is not going to be for everyone, but
it’s a decent time if you’re looking for quality
ridiculousness. Grade: B-
