“Surfer-chic hotels and
motels and farm-to-table
restaurants draw stars, such
as Leonardo DiCaprio”
have to order at the counter at
this family-friendly restaurant,
but you won’t be disappointed
by massive burritos, authentic
tacos, and decadent desserts.
STAY IN AMAGANSETT
The Inn at Windmill Lane
might look like just another
beach house, but hiding
behind that hedge is one of
the most exclusive hotels in
the Hamptons (and one of the
few hotels in Amagansett).
The hotel is created perfectly
to make you feel right at
home (as long as your home
has been on the cover of
Architectural Digest).
EAT IN SAG HARBOR
Sag Harbor’s The American
Hotel has been around for
longer than the Hamptons have
been a go-to destination for the
New York elite. It first opened in
1846 and still retains a historic
ambiance. Notable visitors over
the years have included Billy
Joel, Truman Capote and Jimmy
Buffet. Go there for a cocktail
and dine on elegant seafood
classics. theamericanhotel.com
Le Bilboquet (no website
because they are just that
exclusive) is perhaps the
poshest and most expensive
restaurant in the Hamptons,
serving exquisite French
seafood in an unbeatable
location overlooking the water.
On the more casual end of the
spectrum, Sag Pizza is without
a doubt the best Neopolitanstyle
wood fired pizza in the
Hamptons. sagpizza.com
STAY IN SAG HARBOR
Baron’s Cove is your best
choice in Sag Harbor. The
chic, updated hotel is right on
the water, offering plenty of
activities. Don’t miss out on
the intimate Lobby Lounge bar.
EAT IN MONTAUK
You can’t leave Montauk
without a meal on the dock
at Duryea’s Lobster Deck, a
casual-yet-elegant waterfront
bar that specialises in seafood.
As the name suggests, lobster
is the name of the game
here, either served whole or
in a lobster roll. You can’t go
wrong with either, plus a plate
of raw oysters and clams.
The Crow’s Nest is probably
the chicest and most romantic
restaurant in the Hamptons.
It has a cosy indoor space
and plenty of tables set up
on the grass under a string
of twinkling lights. The menu
here is creative farm-to-table,
specialising in veggie-centric
small plates that showcase
the bounty of the region.
STAY IN MONTAUK
Montauk is full of chic,
redesigned motels and
cottages, but if you’re looking
for glamour and luxury, book
a room at Gurney’s Montauk
Resort & Seawater Spa,
which has rooms overlooking
the ocean. Keep an eye on
their calendar for special
events and pop-up shops and
galleries. gurneysresorts.com
CHIC SHOPS AND CELEBRITY-SPOTTING
Amagansett is East Hampton’s low-key neighbour,
with just a sprinkling of restaurants and shops clustered
around the main town square, Amagansett
Square. Don’t be deceived though; this low-key vibe
has attracted some of the world’s biggest celebrities
and you might just find yourself standing in line for
coffee next to one. This tiny town is also home to some
of the best shopping in the Hamptons. Music lovers
shouldn’t miss Innersleeve Records, and you can pick
up everything for your surfing needs (and so much
more) at the painfully hip Pilgrim Surf + Supply.
You’ll find chic bathing suits, eco-friendly beach
essentials and even home décor. At the perfectly
arranged Love Adorned, you’ll find everything from
quirky hostess gifts to one-of-a-kind vintage jewellery.
SAILING AND SEAFOOD
While Sag Harbor is one of the cutest and most-walkable
towns on Long Island’s South Fork, Southampton
is arguably the dining capital; it has some of the best
restaurants in the region, where you’ll find everything
from fine French cuisine to pizza to fresh seafood
served with a water view. Although Sag Harbor isn’t on
the beach (it’s on the harbour, as the name suggests),
the waterside location of this town makes it the perfect
place to charter a sailboat or try stand up paddle
boarding.
DISCOVER HIPSTER HANGOUTS
At the very tip of southern Long Island, Montauk is
worth a visit as the hipster party capital of the area.
Surfer-chic hotels and motels and farm-to-table
restaurants draw stars, such as Leonardo DiCaprio,
while the legendary nightlife scene has inspired gossip
columns around the world. With more hotels, bars and
restaurants than the other towns in the Hamptons, this
is one of the most visitor-friendly locations in the area
and a must-visit for those looking to eat fresh lobster
with sunset views alongside some of New York’s most
fashionable scenesters. The Surf Lodge is a bohemian
nightclub that hosts world-famous acts and has a steep
price tag. You wouldn’t guess at first glance that this
surf shack is where big spenders congregate, dropping
nearly US$20,000 on a bar bill without blinking an
eyelid. It’s not for everyone, but you really have to see
it to make that choice for yourself.
