It has been a long-time coming but finally word on who the developer of the bar, cafe and retail complex is out: The Peebles Group. The group is tip-top developers. It has the popular Little High in the central city and the soon-to-be opened Riverside farmers’ market and Riverside retail complex. But the important thing is the group, headed by Richard Peebles, has its heart in the region. It could have taken its money and ran to potentially more lucrative locations after the earthquakes. But they have invested here – which has been a massive help for the rebuild. Now they are doing something big in Lyttelton. Residents say they are sick of seeing litter which has been thrown from vehicles in Diamond Harbour and areas such as Allandale Reserve, Teddington and Governors Bay. Diamond Harbour Callum Fawcett resident Callum Fawcett decided to launch the Volunteer Litterbug Patrol after he spent 30 minutes picking up rubbish on Gebbies Pass and barely made a dent. Mr Fawcett said the disregard of people who litter is “very frustrating” as the area is considered paradise by himself and other residents. The first litter pick-up event is set for August 11, meeting at 8.30am in the Diamond Harbour School car park before walking over to Allandale Reserve. Mr Fawcett said there will be a quick introduction then briefing before heading out at “9am sharp in groups of four to six people per vehicle and trailer.” tree trouble? call us 384 9630 www.fourseasonstreecare.co.nz He said more than 30 people have expressed an interest when he made a post about the patrol on the Facebook page Diamond Harbour, New Zealand Facebook page. “Once we have done the first pickup, I’ve asked the school in a months time if we can involve the local students to do a quarterly pick-up in the waterways.” He said children will not be involved in the roadside pick-ps due to safety concerns. Mr Fawcett said he eventually wants to see signs that read “Diamond Harbour is a litterbug free zone.” Banks Peninsula Community Board member Tyrone Fields said it was good to hear that residents were taking action. “We are always looking for ways to facilitate local people following their passions so it’s great.” •If you would like to get involved, phone Mr Fawcett on 021 631 048. HIKING BOOTS & SHOES In Brief FRIED FISH OVERDONE Eight Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade firefighters attended a callout at The Giants House bed and breakfast after fish which was being cooked on a stove set off the smoke alarms on Sunday. The crew arrived in two appliances at about 8.30pm and spent 40min trying to settle smoke in the kitchen so the alarms would stop. GODLEY HEAD FEEDBACK Residents have until Monday to have a say on the future of the Godley Head site. The consultation is being done to gather feedback on what the public would like to use the area for, keeping in mind the land is a reserve under the Reserves Act 1977. The foundations of Godley House will remain untouched. BRIDGE TO BE REPLACED THe replacement of a bridge on Tikao Bay Rd, Wainui, is set to start on Monday. The bridge will be closed for up to seven days. During this time, pedestrian access will be provided and the affected residents will be informed of the days of closure. Work is being done as the infrastructure has been assessed and is nearing the end of its life.
