FORUM WORKSHOP
A product that’s much in demand is often
placed in the back, compelling shoppers to
walk through the store and visually sample
everything else the store has to

offer. Related products and accessory
items are placed
nearby as well as in other areas
to give shoppers several opportunities
to consider them.
While in the stores, also note how different retailers
address security issues in the setup of
the sales floor. Checkout counters, almost always
staffed, typically sit where the employee
has a direct line of sight to all areas of the store.
Sometimes this vantage point is near the front
door, or in a counter kiosk slightly elevated
above the rest of the sales floor. In stores with a
lot of angles, concave mirrors or video cameras
serve as practical and psychological deterrents
to pilferage. Security poses such a critical issue,
and protection against theft and pilferage is
such an important consideration, the start-up
retailer should seek expert advice. Store designers
bring a thorough knowledge of security issues
to the projects. If you’re not using one, at
the very least set up a consult with a local security
firm, preferably one specializing in commercial
or retail accounts. You’ll find them
listed online and in the phone book.
FLEXIBLE DESIGNS WILL
TRANSLATE INTO SAVINGS
Taking all these into consideration,
you should plan a certain degree of
flexibility into your store design.
