Obviously the Olympics next year would be great, but since I’ve just been to World Champs, the chances that I’m selected for that might not be high. How come? Speaking with other officials at South Korea, the feeling was that if you were picked to officiate at the World Championships that you wouldn’t be picked to go to Japan next year. That’s only the perception, we haven’t been told anything official but if that’s how it pans out then I’m absolutely fine with that. I have an idea of who may go from the six of us (in New Zealand) and if my feeling is correct then that person deserves to go and I’ll be very happy for them. I’m absolutely fine with how things have turned out, it was just the talk of the people in Korea that if you’ve done a World Champs this year that the Olympics may go to someone else and that seems logical and I’m comfortable with that. I would love to do something every year but all six of us will get an equal opportunity over the next four years. Yes, I’m there to observe what the swimmers are doing and report any infringements but I’m certainly happy when there’s nothing to report. Have there been other highlights? Being honoured by Swimming New Zealand as Technical Official of the Year in 2014 and then the Sport Canterbury Sports Awards in 2016 was a real highlight as well. Are your children still involved in the sport? Holly swam at Jasi Swim Club when she was at high school and university and now she does open water swimming while my son Ashley does iron man competitions so they’re still involved in their own way. Keeping warm this winter just got easier with the establishment of a new company in Darfield, Birchfield Energy and Resources Ltd. The new company offers firewood and coal direct to the public. Sales and Transport Manager and Darfield local Mark Wisdom says the business is an energy company supplying to the industrial and domestic markets. The company has spent the last few months developing the depot, complete with dry storage, offices and a public weighbridge, on Creyke Road just outside the township. Mark says “We also plan to add a landscape supplies service to the public and currently have railway sleepers in 1200 mm lengths and Paparoa Red Rock available in three grades - - 4 mm, 12.25 mm and 25 mm plus”. The depot is open to the public and also offers a delivery service around the Selwyn District for all coal, firewood and landscaping orders. Sourcing firewood that is split and dry is a yearly concern for homeowners. Mark says Birchfield Energy and Resources has 5000 cubic metres of beech firewood available for immediate sale. Beech is ideal for wood burners as it is a hardwood with a long burn time and is clean with little spark. “We have a years worth of wood ahead of us that is clean, dry, split and ready to burn. Our truck can deliver one bulk load or two four cubic metre loads where customers in the same area could share delivery costs.” Birchfield Energy and Resources offers West Coast sub-bituminous coal with low ash, low sulphur – which provides clean burning. Coal is available from the Creyke Road depot in 20 kg bags for the average consumer or half ton bags for those that live out of town or have larger storage capacity. Half ton bags can be loaded as is or dumped loose onto a trailer. The large public weighbridge, that is located within the depot, caters for all sized vehicles from cars with trailers to truck and trailer units. Birchfield Coal Mines Ltd is the parent company of Birchfield Energy and Resources Ltd and has 45 years of industry experience, which means all firewood and coal comes directly from the source and is offered at competitive prices “direct to the public.” Customers who purchase 3 cubic metres of firewood receive free delivery.
