It was installed in Station St and will be up and running this week. Leeston Community Committee chairman Lloyd Clausen said they first brought up the idea 10 years ago. “We’ve been trying for ages to get one and the idea is that it will, hopefully, be just another point of call for motor caravans to stop and have a look around Leeston,’’ he said. The station is part of the work started from the $267,800 the Government awarded the district council last year in round two of funding from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The other projects include new dump stations in Tai Tapu, Lake Coleridge and Glentunnel. In total, the stations will cost $90,000. The community committee requested the dump station as part of the district council’s 2017-2018 Annual Plan. Glentunnel’s new dump station should also be operating this week. Business success earns Chile trip • By Devon Bolger ALLI KENNEDY has dreams of being the boss of a mega-corporation one day. “I remember, probably 10 years ago, I asked my dad how to make the most money, how to become rich and he said you start a business. That really stuck with me,” the 17-year-old Lincoln High School student said. Alli was eight-years-old when she first thought of owning a business when she grew up. “It just went from there. I got into high school and started taking business studies and realised it was the path I want to go down.” The year 13’s potential as a budding entrepreneur has been recognised by national business leaders. She has been selected as one of eight students to travel to Chile in October after competing in the Entrepreneurs in Action business competition last month. She was chosen to compete at the competition in Wellington from the 4000 participants in the young enterprise scheme across the country. Her eight-person team won both challenges at the event, winning each member a total of $7000 from Massey University SKILLS: Alli Kennedy is going to Chile after a team she was in successfully won the Entrepreneurs In Action business competition last month. and the trip to Chile. On the trip, the students will learn about local culture and business and meet local entrepreneurs. They will experience site visits to established companies and start-ups and they will work with local students on business challenges. Going to Chile will really help to build on her business skills, Alli said. “At the business competition, I discovered the importance of knowing the culture of a company when working in business. I think working with students in chile and businesses there is really going to improve my skills.” Alli is also a part of the Lions Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme through Lincoln High School. Her team’s business Suck It Straws created designer stainless steel straws to reduce plastic. They won the YES regional marketing award last month. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday August 14 2019 5 District council has ‘no plans to change’ confusing road signs •From page 1 District council transportation team leader Mark Chamberlain said the council is responsible for putting in the speed limit signs at the intersection, but the stop signs are the New Zealand Transport Agency’s responsibility. “There are no plans to change the signs that we are aware of,” Mr Chamberlain said. He said on average 68 traffic management plans are submitted for the district each month. A NZTA representative was on leave and could not comment. Meanwhile, The Famous Grouse Hotel owner Lynn Townsend, who opposed the removal of the Gerald St car parks, said he is not Mark Chamberlain surprised people are still parking there. “I told the council that Lincoln needs every park it can get so it is a bit of an I told you moment for me.” Yellow no parking lines were put in last year but the white lines that used to mark the parks are still visible and people continue to park there. The Lincoln Community Committee has also written to the district council, urging it to remove the white lines. Mr Chamberlain said the old lines were initially blacked out when the yellow lines were painted. “The blacking out has been worn and the removal of the old lines is being arranged.” The penalty for parking on the yellow lines is $60. Lincoln resident of 13 years Kim Eccleston has also been asking the district council to improve confusing road signs. He said road works in the district are riddled with mistakes, such as the wrong speed limit signs. A road works site near Rolleston on Weedons Rd recently had a 100km/h sign in an 80km/h zone. The sign was kept up for three days before being changed to the correct 80km/h.
